Thank you @netgalley and publishers for granting me this #ARC in exchange for my honest review.
The House Guest was GREAT! I did not know much about it when I began reading but oh man by the first few pages I was hooked. I flew through this one because it was so suspenseful. I have been fascinated lately by cults ( or as the author, @markedwardssuthor refers in his post writing “ new religious movements”). The way that these stories write about them gives an inside look into how easy it is to become a part of one without realizing it! Disclaimer: I have no intention of joining one... EVER!
Adam and Ruth are house sitting for a couple they met a few months ago on a cruise in New York City. They are both from London, but Ruth is an up and coming actress and Adam is a writer. They are both staying the summer to dip their toes in the land of opportunity. One stormy New York night, Eden shows up on the porch claiming to know the homeowners and that she was there to surprise them. They invite her in and eventually she stays the week because they are kind and caring human beings. All is well until one night Tequila and take out turns into a blackout fest and when Adam wakes up, Ruth and Eden are gone. This story is a whirlwind of information, has a few jump scares here and there, and really allows the reader to use minute details to gain insight into what is going on. I loved every word of this one and I hope you will too! 🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷/5!
Another great book from Mark Edwards. This chilling story kept me hooked from the beginning with lots of twists throughout.
Adam and Ruth are housesitting for some friends in New York, when a young woman named Eden shows up on their doorstep one night, claiming to be very good friends with the owners and not having a place to stay. After some discussion with her, with her answers checking out, Adam and Ruth feel that the neighborly thing to do is to allow Eden to stay with them in one of the guest rooms for the final week before their friends are due to come back in town. On the night before their friends are due back, the threesome enjoy a night in, with lots of food and even more to drink. When Adam wakes up the next morning, Eden is gone…and so is Ruth. This story started out really strong before going off onto a hunt for a secret society. Without giving too much up, a lot of it was difficult to believe. On the other hand, if you’ve been following some of the news stories lately (particularly on Nxivm), maybe not. It’s an easy read, but not my favorite by this author.

NOTE: Special thanks to the publisher & NetGalley for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
I've read all of Mark Edwards' books. He is one of the best psychological thriller writers out there! I'm not sure how he does it, but his books keep getting better!
This is the story of Ruth and Adam who are house sitting in New York for a couple they met on a cruise. It all sounds lovely, until they open the door one stormy night to a girl on the doorstep. This girl, Eden, is claiming to be a friend of the couple whose house Adam and Ruth are staying in. After some contemplation, they let her in and all bets are off! The world as they know it spirals downward.
This book is quite the ride with many twists and turns! I highly recommend!!! Thank you, Mark for another awesome story!!
I really liked this book. The first half goes quickly like a can of Pringles. Once ya pop you can’t stop. Then the second half sailed into a huge “WTF” but not like a bad WTF. Great writing!
Thank you NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Absolutely enjoyed reading this book read it as a buddy read with my friends at the Fiction Cafe Book club it’s the first Mark Edwards book I’ve read and it certainly won’t be the last
Wow, another unputdownable page turner from Mark Edwards. This book, like his others, draws you in from the first page. In this book Ruth and Adam are an English couple, house sitting for an American couple they met on a cruise while Ruth is rehearsing for a play she's in. One stormy night a girl turns up on the door, saying she's a friend of the house owners and they let her stay. This is well intentioned and I can imagine in their position many people would have done the same. The story then takes many dark, twisting turns leading to a dramatic conclusion (don't worry, no spoilers here). I loved the exploration of relationships and beliefs that unfolded throughout the story. I devoured this book quickly, as it was well written and the story sucked me in. Definitely highly recommended.

This book is kind of hard to review because talking about the plot at all would bring spoilers. Character wise, I really liked Adam. Most of the thrillers I have read are from a female perspective, so it was refreshing to read from Adam's perspective. He had a lot of good qualities such as determination, caring, and unconditional love. I really sympathized with him throughout the entire book, and I think it was because he was so reliable. In a lot of the thrillers I have read the main characters are chronic alcoholics, drug users, or have mental illnesses that make the reader form doubt. That was not the case in this book, and even though I love an unreliable narrator it was really nice to have that change of pace.
This book was outrageous in terms of all of the plot twists and things that happened, but somehow it worked so well. I have never read a thriller as fast as I read this one. Mark Edwards constructed pages that turned themselves. Overall, I would recommend this book to any thriller lover. I can't wait to get my hands on more of Edwards's books.
Solid 4 stars on this read. Great concept for a story, this one has more twists and turns than you average!
The ending was honestly, my favorite part.
Would love to read what Edwards comes up with next!
The title and the cover themselves are spooky, intriguing and mysterious. The House Guest is a chilling psychological thriller. The story is about a British couple, Adam and Ruth, who take up the job of house sitting a wealthy couple, Jack and Mona in New York City for the summer. A few days before Jack and Mona return, a stranger shows up at their doorstep, fully drenched in the rainstorm outside, claiming to be a friend of Jack and Mona. Adam and Ruth let her stay on believing her words. Everything goes normal until one night, all three of them get really drunk. When Adam wakes up the next day, he realizes that Ruth and Eden (the stranger) are nowhere to be found. The story turns even spookier when Jack and Mona return and reveal that they have no idea who Eden is.
It is a fast-paced novel with thrill, twists and turns here and there. The ending was perfect for a psychological thriller like this. The only con of this book is that I found some parts to be comical and unrealistic.
I thank NetGalley and Amazon UK for giving me this wonderful oppurtunity
I think I've read all of Mark Edward's books. I havent been disappointed by one of them. As usual brilliantly written, lived how it ended. A few parts I guessed what was going to happen. But the story was so different to the typical thriller.. loved it.
Adam, a writer, and Ruth, an actress, meet an American couple while on a cruise. When Ruth is offered a job in New York, the couple offer them the use of their house while they go away on a retreat. They settle into New York life, Adam writing and Ruth putting in long hours rehearsing her latest part. One night, during a storm,a young woman appears at the door claiming to be a friend of the owners, Eden is drenched and claims to have nowhere to go so Adam and Ruth invite her to stay. They all become friends, Adam and Eden spending their days together while Ruth is working. The weekend that the owners are due back Eden treats them to a takeaway and tequila which leads to a drunken night sharing secrets and dancing in the rain. But when Adam wakes the following day where are Ruth and Eden? A tension filled, creepy mystery follows as Adam tries to find out what is going on.
Once again Mark Edwards has served us up a brilliant and thrilling read. I finished this book in 24 hours, I could not leave it out of my hands
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review
First time reading Mark Edwards, and I will definitely check out his other books after this read. Fast paced, twists galore and lots of suspense in this novel. Adam and Ruth are house sitting for a couple in NYC whom they met on a cruise and clicked with. A guest comes to visit the couple that is out of town, and ends up staying with Adam and Ruth while they wait for the couple to return. What ensues seems a little crazy, but still believable! If you love a fast paced thriller, this book is for you! Thank you to NetGalley and Amazon Publishing for the ARC.
Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. If you want a thriller with twists and turns and great characters you will really enjoy this book. I loved it. I have several paperback books from this author in my TBR pile and I am going to enjoy reading them.
Don't put your trust in people you don't know. This read gripped me within the first few pages. Each chapter pulled out a new surprise leaving me thirsty for more. Edwards doesn't disappoint in this thrilling ride. If you're looking for a thriller then take your mind wondering in this breath taking novel and watch the pages unfold.
Wow! Unbelievable edge of your seat thriller about a cult operating in plain site among the rich and successful. Ruth and Adam are housesitting In New York for friends they recently met on a cruise. When a drenched woman shows up at their door one night claiming to be friends with the homeowner they let her in. This is a HUGE mistake. Eden, the new house guest, worms her way into their lives and gain their trust very quickly. After a drunken night with Eden, Ruth disappears and Adam is left to try to make sense of everything. Excellent creepy mystery thrill ride. Impossible to put down. Highly recommended!!!
The House Guest by Mark Edwards...
I give this book 4.8 out of 5 stars 🌟....

A perfect summer. A perfect stranger. A perfect nightmare 😱.
When British twenty somethings Ruth and Adam get the chance to house sit in New York they take it. Then mysterious Eden turns up on the doorstep drenched from a storm and claiming she knows the homeowners who told her she could stay whenever she was in New York. Ruth and Adam know they shouldn’t let strangers into their home but what harm could it do...really 🤔?

This book is so hard to review because I don’t want to give away any spoilers! All I can say is Eden isn’t what she seems and what unravels from that will shock and surprise you! I loved the theme of the book which I can’t reveal but it is a subject that interests me!
All I can say is read it and find out for yourself what the book is about haha!

Another weird and wonderful thriller from Mark Edwards 😍! Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this ARC @netgalley, @markedwardsauthor and @amazonpublishing! Publishing date is 3rd June 2020 💕
Yet another fantastic story from Mark Edwards! Always a master of character development which makes every book very relatable and ensnare the reader into the story right along with them. Mark never fails to bring page turning excitement and suspense for the reader to hang on to.
This was a weird one ... it was a pretty good thriller but I felt it got very weird, very quickly. Although kind of believable in a weird way I guess, (especially if you like secrets and conspiracy theories)! The author’s writing style reminded me of My Lovely Wife, and I was surprised to discover the author is English not American, as even though the main character is English but living in NYC, I found it to be quite American-ised in style.
You are housesitting in NY
There is a summer storm...
The doorbell rings...
and, standing there, drenched, is a harmless looking young woman, who claims to be friends with the owner...
WOULD YOU INVITE HER IN?
The premise HOOKED me...the story, did not.
(just like with my first attempt from this author, "The Retreat", which I preferred to this one)
Mark Edwards is a three million copy best-selling author with many fans, so clearly I am just not the right audience for his work.
Thank You to NetGalley, Thomas & Mercer, and the author for the digital ARC I received in exchange for a candid review! Fans can grab a copy on June 3. 2020!
