Really looked forward to this book by Mark Edwards as I loved all his previous books. Although this book started off quite well and had lots of high tension etc the ending lacked something which was disappointing. It was fast paced but I think the last quarter of the book let it down and lost interest in it half way in which is very unusual with Mark Edward's books.

Oh my I couldn’t put this down, started last night and finished this afternoon. Extremely well written, addictive, really good storyline and great characters - exactly what you need for a great book. I will highly recommend and review when this is published, Only problem now is I have no more books by Mark left to read 😢 Thank you Netgalley and Amazon Publishing UK for the advanced copy to read and review.
Twenty-somethings Ruth & Adam are offered the chance to house sit in New York and it's an offer they can't refuse. Eden turns up on their doorstep claiming to be a friend of the homeowners who told her she could stay at the house whenever she wanted.
Ruth & Adam invite Eden into the home but suspicions start to creep in that Eden might not be who she claims to be. They wonder whether they have made a terrible mistake.
The House Guest is an excellent psychological thriller with a good plot, great characters and lots of suspense. Loved the ending!
Thank you to Netgalley, Amazon Publishing and the author for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Love this author and have loved all of his books that I have read. This one did not disappoint and kept me gripped from the start.
Things are looking up for Ruth and Adam. Well, at least for Ruth, who has landed a lead role in a Broadway play. Adam is a writer who hasn't gotten his big break yet, but it is only a matter of inspiration and time. They were fortunate to meet a wealthy couple on a cruise and are now house sitting Jack and Mona's lovely home in Brooklyn.
One night, during a terrible storm, Eden knocks on the door looking for Jack and Mona. She tells them that they are her friends and their door is always open when she visits New York. Adam and Ruth debate what to do since Jack and Mona are at a retreat and unreachable. Ultimately, they decide they should let Eden stay. No one ever told these two not to open their door to strangers and not to let them inside! It is a decision that will soon have unimaginable ramifications for Ruth and Adam.
Adam wakes up alone after a night of partying with Ruth and Eden. Both of them are gone without a trace, and when Mona and Jack return, Adam is stunned to learn they don't know anyone by the name of Eden. What follows is a tale full of lies, betrayals, murder, and a twisted leader of a shadowy group who may have very specific plans for Ruth. It was a fast-paced read that kept me guessing and held my interest until the end, and even when I thought everything was sorted out, Mark Edwards added one final killer twist.
This is the second Mark Edwards book I’ve read, and the second one that I’ve loved. No one else does creepy suspense quite like it. It has you looking over your shoulder as you’re reading!
Ruth and Adam are spending the summer in New York house sitting whilst Ruth prepares to star in a Broadway Show. Then one day, drenched from a summer storm, Eden shows up on their doorstep claiming to be good friends with the owners of the the house. Ruth and Adam being the trusting people they are decide to let her stay but is she all that she seems...
3.5 stars
The perfect distraction!
When Ruth, an up and coming actress, and her boyfriend, Adam, an aspiring writer, open their door on a dark and stormy night and find Eden on the other side, they make the biggest mistake of their lives--they invite her in! They soon find themselves in the hands of dangerous and crazy people!
I can’t say much more about the plot without giving away spoilers.
I was thoroughly entertained by The House Guest. It is fast-paced and easy to read. There is a good dose of drama and suspense. The plot is over-the-top. However, Mark Edwards puts his spin on things. He turns events that should be ridiculous into intrigue! There are some tongue in cheek moments, and in typical Edwards fashion, a character from a previous book makes an appearance. Overall, this was an enjoyable diversion!
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Another great book by Mark Edwards. The storyline was original and the characters well crafted. I love Mark Edwards and this book did not disappoint. It is a psychological thriller with many unexpected twists and turns. I would thoroughly recommend it.
Thank you Mark Edwards, Amazon Publishing and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to give my unbiased opinion.
The plot of The House Guest explores themes familiar to the author: normal couple plunged into an insane situation because of someone they let into their home. There is also another subject that has appeared in a previous novel but naming it would spoil the book, but that’s where the resemblance ends. Using recurring themes, Edwards creates a fresh new story. The couple in question is not completely normal this time because Ruth is an actress in the cusp of becoming famous. The baddie is also not your run of the mill psycho. Ruth and Adam are Brits, housesitting in NY. The strangers in a strange land adds another level of isolation to their plight. Eden, the girl who shows up claiming to be acquainted to the owners of the house, is a little less vivid. The twists and turns made kept my interest and I read it quickly even if the main surprise requires a big (huge) suspension of disbelief. In short, a solid thriller.
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thank you, NetGalley/ Amazon Publishing UK!
I was very intrigued by the premise of this book, so I was excited to read it.
Unfortunately it was quite predictable in more ways than one, and I found it hard to stay interested.
It wasn't a terrible book by any means, but it wasn't really for me.
Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a copy of this E-book via Netgalley.
When Adam and Ruth are house sitting in New York the mysterious Eden lands on their doorstep claiming to be friends of the owners. She has no where else to go prompting Adam and Ruth to invite her to stay with them but things are not as they first seem.
Taking you through twists and turns this gripping thriller will have the reader hooked from the start. The great writing entices you in, making you want more with each page.
This started similarly to a previous Edwards novel- Here to Stay. And none of the reviews or blurb really explained what was different.
But what developed was a book that was very different, and believable to me. Made me wonder how well you actually know someone!
This is the first book I read from this author and I loved it. The story is deep and kept me hooked from the very first chapter. Ruth and Adam are very well developed characters and the reader feel they are alive. Although at the beginning we think, “why would someone let strangers in the fast paced story unfolds perfectly. It’s definitely a must read thriller.
I'm not usually one for cult stories, but I actually really liked this book. It wasn't super twisty, I pretty much predicted what was coming throughout. The characters were interesting and convincing. I could see this being made into a movie or TV show successfully. I do wish there was something more surprising about the story though, it felt a little too familiar. But again, that might just be my slight bias against cult stories in general. I did like the author's writing style and will probably pick up more books from him in the future.

A fast paced thriller that keeps you turning page after page. Reading this felt like I was watching a movie in my head. I could feel the confusion of the characters as they attempted to make sense of what was happening to them.
I loved the way the final chapter brought the story to an end..... or did it !
Another winner from the pen of Mark Edwards.
I wasn't a huge fan of this book. I enjoyed the pace and the cult aspect but found myself bored at points. This is my first book by Edwards and I've been told that his other books are stronger.
As a fan not only of Mark Edwards but also of thrillers I was eager to read this new novel. It did not disappoint! As with all of Mark's books, I could not put it down. Filled with suspense and a chilling plot, well thought out twists and just enough clues laid like breadcrumbs to hook u into the finale. The main characters are realistic that you can relate to. Thoroughly enjoyable book with an ending that leaves you thinking about it for days!
This was sooo good. Although I have to admit, I found myself hating all the characters, LOL. Like LOATHE! I finished this one in 2 days flat! So good
Every time Mark Edwards has a new book, I get super excited. I always think the last one was my favorite, but then I read his new one and I'm blown away! The House Guest explored avenues not often taken by authors and kept me on my toes. At some parts, I felt truly physically uncomfortable - something that I feel is a feat on its own on the author's part. Dynamic characters, a constant feeling of unease even in the beginning, and the twists kept on coming... This is another book I'll be reading over and over again for years!
Even the title and book cover lured me to read this novel and I am sure glad I did! Mark Edwards did a fantastic job with this one. A must read!
