Another fantastic book by Mark Edwards. I have not been disappointed by anything I have read by him. He has a knack of hooking you from the off and keeping you on the edge of your seat.
A must read for psychological thriller fans.
This is my second Mark Edwards book after reading "Here to stay", which was one of the best storylines I had read in 2019!.
I liked "The house guest", it had a quriky storyline relating to a cult, not so much gripping- but was a good read and I haven't come across alot of Physcological Thrillers that delve into the dark depths of a cult storyline.
The main characters Ruth and Adam are fairly likeable characters, and I enjoyed the way we get a false sense of liking to other characters that turn out not be to who they portray. This for me was definitely 'Callum' as I wasn't expecting it!, But there are plenty others along the way!
I would recommend this easy read, good for a summer 2020 read as it is set in a hot and sweaty New York summertime. Will definitely pass time for the lockdown 2020!
Ruth and Adam are house sitting when Eden shows up saying she knows the couple that owns the house. They invite her in and the story goes from there. Always with a twisty mystery/thriller, the less you know before reading the better. I thought the ending was too much over-telling. I didn't need to have everything explained. I enjoyed the pacing. The story kept me engaged which is tough these days. This is just the book I needed to take my mind off the news.

This is my first Mark Edwards read, and I will absolutely be going back for more.
For me, Part One of the book was a riveting read; I tore through that section voraciously. This is where the titular house guest, Eden, appears on the doorstep of her friends' home to find a couple - Ruth and Adam - housesitting. Not wanting to leave her in the rain, the housesitters admit Eden. Things get...REALLY weird from there.
Though I found the first part of the book quick and intriguing, I found the later two parts a bit longer than necessary. That noted, I still enjoyed the book, the direction, and the concept quite a bit, especially since it was all accomplished in a fairly economical manner.
If you're looking for a pretty realistic, shorter thriller that'll keep you guessing, this is your book. I am excited to read more from Edwards.
When on a cruise, British couple, Adam and Ruth are given the opportunity to spend the summer house sitting in New York. One evening, during a summer storm, there is a knock on the door and they find a drenched young lady who claims to be friends with the home owners. When things start to happen, will they regret their decision to let Eden stay?
An enjoyable and easy read with plenty of twists to keep you interested. The characters were written well, there were some you loved and some you loathed, there was no in between. I was certainly entertained with all the craziness of the story.
This was a roller coaster ride from beginning to end. I just love Mark's books, as just as the reader starts getting comfortable with the direction a book is taking, he pulls the rug from under you and leave you gasping for air. This was one of those books, and I can highly recommend it.
As usual Mark Edwards does a great job of writing a gripping and all-too-plausible story. I won't re-cap the blurb other than to say when Ruth and Adam house-sit a home in New York it all goes to pot when a friend of the absent owners turns up unannounced on the doorstep. I really enjoy Edwards style of writing and he always manages to engage the reader in the plot, whilst simultaneously making the reader sympathetic to the main characters, even though we know they are flawed. Well done Mr Edwards - another good book. I can't wait for the next one! My thanks go to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC.
An action packed, edgy and creepy read. I was expecting so much from this book and although I enjoyed it, I am so sorry but I found it to be nothing out of the ordinary and not as good as the authors previous books. My thanks go to Amazon Publishing UK and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book.
Ruth and Adam are housesitting when Eden turns up drenched from a storm claiming to be friends with the house owners, Mona and Jack. She told Ruth and Adam that the owners said she could stay whenever she was in New York.
They know that they shouldn’t talk to strangers, let alone invite them into your home - but Eden’s only a stranger until they get to know her. Soon they start to realise that Eden may not be who she claims to be, and then they realise they have made a terrible mistake...
This was a fast paced read and full of action. The story started off well, but soon became rather too far fetched for me.
Thanks to Netgalley and Amazon Publishing UK for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
*spoilers*
Ahhh I’m frustrated by this book. Because I normally LOVE everything that Mark does. I mean, it wasn’t bad. I’m just not totally into books including ‘cults’ - I don’t know, I guess I felt a bit disappointed with the ‘who’s behind it all’ it didn’t satisfy me :(
The ever reliable Mark Edwards has come up with another story of extraordinary things happening to ordinary people. This time however the plot is SO extraordinary as to make it totally unbelievable.
It started well but sadly deteriorated into a cliche ridden series of events culminating with a laughable final scene where the pantomime 'villain' of the piece justifies his actions to his supporters.
It's a very easy read and full marks to Mr Edwards for being so creative and prolific. However I think that he needs to stay in the UK and stick to the trusted formula of earlier stories.
Thank you to NetGalley and Amazon Publishing UK. for the ARC.
Looking back through the many Mark Edwards books I've read over the years, most of which I've rated 4 stars (with the occasional 3 sprinkled in), I'd definitely say The House Guest falls near the bottom of the group.
Although this story is written in Edwards' speedy, fun, action-packed style...which I love...the plot simply didn't hold my interest. At the beginning, I was ALL in. I mean, how creepy to invite a stranger into your home, thinking she's a friend of a friend...only to find out that isn't the case at all?
I actually can't say much more than that, for fear of giving away spoilers, but the direction the story took was very meh for me. So many times, while reading, I found myself whispering, "Why would he DO that?" or "What was she thinking?" The actions of the characters seemed forced, which is something I'm so unfamiliar with in Edwards' book, it was discombobulating.
I did, however, appreciate all the research he did about NYC, and living in the United States. His hard work definitely paid off, as the setting certainly seemed legit to me.
While this wasn't my favorite of his novels, it's still a mostly fun read, and one I'd recommend, especially if you've never read Mark Edwards novels before. You can purchase your very own copy on June 3, 2020.
Sometimes when destiny comes knocking, it's best to slam the door and run!
Fame, fortune, wealth, just how far are you willing to go to have it all? What would you be prepared to turn a blind eye to?
Reading the title of this book I did not expect it to turn out how it did. Never saw it coming and was drawn in to keep reading in one sitting just to see how it would all turn out.
Isn't that what everyone wants when they pick up a book? Look no further, get comfy and enjoy.

This was another good one by Mark Edwards. It was hard to put down. I feel like the plot wasn’t super original since there’s a lot of thrillers out there with a similar premise but it was well written. It reminded me of Lisa Jewell’s book The Family Upstairs, but so much better. I also wasn’t expecting the ending and I like how he left it to be interpreted by the reader.
I love Mark Edwards - he's one of my favourite authors, and perhaps I put him on too high a pedestal, but I was a little disappointed in this story. There were not as many breathtaking twists as I have come to expect from one of Edwards' books at this stage, and I felt like it was a little more unbelievable than some of his other books. I definitely wouldn't say I didn't enjoy it, I always do, but it just didn't feel on par with the rest of his amazing stories.
This is another fantastic read by Mark Edwards. He can really do no wrong when it comes to writing fabulous psychological thrillers.
The style is a little different from his previous books, yet it is still a great page turner. It’s dark, original and unique and I hugely enjoyed it.
This was a pretty good read. Interesting subject. I would read other books by this author. I recommend it.
I have previously read and enjoyed other books by Mark Edwards, this one didn't let me down. I read this one very fast and found it hard to put down as it was fast paced and action pact. I will be going for more Mark Edwards books in the future
Very readable though probably a little unbelievable. Worth a read as it was a page turner.. Mark Edwards never disappoints.
The House Guest by author Mark Edward is a fast, quick read! I very much enjoyed it. It wasn't my favourite Mark Edwards but it was definitely enjoyed.
