New York, Washington D.C and lots of dogs - What's not to love? Page's life takes a sudden dip when her boyfriend dumps her and she gets fired. A quick move to D.C to live with her brother and there begins her journey to put her life back together. Meeting the quirky collection of people at the dog park is the start she needs. I loved Page's journey throughout this from somewhat lacking in confidence to beginning to believe in herself. Likewise the way in which she faces and overcomes the obstacles on route with a positive attitude - too often the heroine wails and drowns in self-pity but not Page. Feeling down? Happily Whatever After will sort you out.
Happily Whatever After was not what I was expecting. I thought this would be another cute rom-com but it turned out to be so much more. Page is hitting her mid thirties and has moved in with her brother after she was dumped and let go from her job in the same week. While trying to figure out what to do Page spends time at the local dog park where she makes some new friends and develops a crush on one of the dog owners. I really enjoyed Page's journey to find out who she is and what she wants in life. I also loved all the friends she made at the dog park and her relationship with her family. I do wish there was a little more romance because thats what I thought I was getting. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a fun and laugh out loud lighthearted story. Thank you to Netgalley for my early copy. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Happily Whatever After by Stewart Lewis
Fantastic Read
Warm and tender at times this fast paced read was just what I needed. Characters were well developed except for maybe the leading man. I would have liked to get to know him a bit more but overall I very much enjoyed this story. It is definitely worth picking up.
3.5/5 Stars

Happily Whatever After is an interesting story about navigating through life's unexpected hurdles and finding yourself along the way. When Page finds herself suddenly unemployed and single, she moves to a new city to be with her brother and rediscover who she is and what she wants. While the novel was intriguing, and the characters were different to those usually found in romantic comedies, I personally could not connect to Page and her story - her personality, odd choices, and overall narrative were not factors that I could relate to, As someone who lives in DC, what was exciting for me was reading about all the familiar places in the city! That was definitely one of my favorite aspects of the book. Overall, the story was interesting, and if you love dogs, this is definitely the book for you!
Hitting rock bottom after being dumped by her boyfriend and losing her job, she flees to a new city in hopes of starting over. The feelings of uncertainty she goes through is familiar to most twenty- and thirty- somethings go through. The writing was sharp and witty.
This was a good book. Fast paced and easy to get lost in. It was a nice book during this unprecedented time. Will definitely buy for my shelf.
Page is a 30 something who just got fired from her job and also ended a relationship within the same week. She left New York and moved to DC to live with her brother.
Honestly I made it 6.5 chapters before in and I have to try again some other time.
This book fees like it is all over the place. I’m not a fan of Page and her narration.
Thank you Lake Union and Netgalley for the ARC!
Happily Whatever After by Stewart Lewis started with a great concept but occasionally got bogged down by unnecessary details that took away from the progression of the plot. A tighter, more focused narrative would have kept me engaged the entire time I was reading. I did enjoy Page's journey throughout the book and I will never say no to lots of cute dogs!
This is the story of 30-something, Page, having to re-invent herself after she loses her job and relationship all in the same week. Page is funny and witty and meets an interesting cast of characters at a dog park after she moves to DC to stay with her brother while she gets back on her feet. I really liked the character development in this book and enjoyed getting to know all of Page’s new and interesting friends. Overall I really enjoyed the book but thought the last page didn’t quite live up to my hopes for the ending. Overall I would recommend it.
The story follows Page after the worst week of her life – she lost her job and her boyfriend and has to leave New York and move in with her brother in DC.
I have mixed feelings about this book. Even though, I quite enjoyed it I had a hard time connecting with some of the characters and some of the relationships that were formed just seemed unrealistic and unbelievable. The protagonist seemed quite shallow and judgmental, which made it hard for me to root for her.
There are many things I enjoyed about this book. I adored Page’s brother Brady and his girlfriend. Brady is such a kind and positive character and the type of brother everyone dreams of. I loved the way the author described the challenges the protagonist faces and how hard it can be to start over in a new place in your thirties.
It is a fun read and a sweet contemporary romance.

Happily Whatever After is so relatable, charming book about chasing happiness. Page our heroine hits rock bottom at some point after being dumped by her boyfriend and losing her job. Like many of us, Page finds hope and pulls herself together. The story starts there and gets interesting when a turning curve comes in Page’s life in the form of second chances. The story is easy to read, well written characters, smart and is a dark comedy. I was hooked right from the beginning as i can see myself in Page. Loved it.
Thank you NetGalley, Lake Union Publishing and the author for reader’s copy of this book. The review is my own and not influenced.
Really enjoyed this. Page is such an endearing character that you can't help but root for her from the very first page. And the colorful supporting cast of characters, adorable doggies, and realistic human struggles just made this book a delight from beginning to end. Can't wait to read more from this author!
It took me a awhile to get through this book because i was really unclear what it wanted to be. The relationships in this book are cringeworthy; I’m still in shock that the protagonist’s obsession actually amounted to anything. Speaking of, her personality was unlikable. I found myself rooting against her, especially with her little quips about her not looking her age. I imagine it was supposed to come off as her confidence growing but it didn’t work for me.
I’m also all for a little vulgarity in my fiction, but this just didn’t hit right and felt almost more dirty than it needed to be. I wouldn’t read something else by this author.

“Happily Whatever After” includes all the best ingredients for an entertaining female-centered work of fiction. Page goes from single, broke, and unemployed to living her dream life. Of course, the journey there is punctuated with challenges and harsh doses of reality along the way. This fun, effervescent novel is peppered with just enough heartache and despair to make it an almost believable story.
I loved this book, it had everything! It was funny, it was sad, it was uplifting. The setting for the main outline of the story was a ‘posh’ dog walking park in which our heroine (Page) found herself with a book but no dog. She soon begins to recognise the different dog walkers and their dogs, and gradually gets to know them. Having just moved to a new city to live with her brother after losing her job in an art gallery and being dumped by her longtime partner, the park was where she came each day to pass some time.
The friends she makes there are instrumental in her adjusting to her new life, and she soon begins to find doors opening for her, plus a handsome vineyard owner who she is very attracted to.
The characters are brilliant, some eccentric, some flamboyant, mostly rich and all keen to help Page move on with her life .
This is one of those books you don’t want to end, you ‘know’ everyone in it and want to continue that ‘friendship’ with them all. I’m now searching out more books by Stewart Lewis, hoping for same kind of warmth and humour.
loved it! absolutely loved it! this is the first book I've read of this author and I definitely intend to read more.
Happily Whatever After follows protagonist Page after the worst week of her life: losing her job and her boyfriend. As she moves to a new city to start fresh while crashing with her brother, she changes her life by following her heart…to the dog park. It is there she meets the people who will help her find her direction and maybe even heal that broken heart.
I’m not one to write negative book reviews. If I find I don’t like a book, I take a “it’s not the book, it’s me” approach. Just because a book doesn’t click with me doesn’t make it bad or not worth reading; it just wasn’t a good fit.
I hate to say it, but Happily Whatever After wasn’t a good fit for me. I had a hard time relating to the protagonist, which makes reading the first person narration a bit more challenging. There were many things I enjoyed in it (you know it wasn’t unbearable because I didn’t give up on it; I still had to find out how it ended!).
Aspects I enjoyed were the descriptions of Washington, D.C. and what life is like when you’re starting over in your mid thirties. I thought the author did a fabulous job of setting up the hurdles she had to overcome and showing that every obstacle is not met with a peppy can do attitude; some things truly do knock you down. Though I didn’t connect with Page, this book is full of fun and quirky characters that are fun to get to know. I also loved the diversity of characters; our world is made up diversely, and it’s refreshing to find that represented in a book where the diversity isn’t a plot point.
While I neither loved nor hated this novel, it was a fun read about finding who you are and deciding what matters. It has both light and serious moments and an unexpected personal struggle.
Happily Whatever After by Stewart Lewis will be available July 28.
This book was definitely cute.
I loved the dynamic between all the characters, and enjoyed the plot a great deal. I thought it was well written!
I absolutely adored this book. The characters were so real that it sucked you in and made you feel a part of the story. You didn't want it to end!
Thank you NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for a chance to read and review this book.
It was a quick and easy read. I liked this story and the characters were fun. This book revolves around Page who had recently lost her great job and boyfriend one after the other and is looking for a fresh start at a whole new place. So she packs up and bids Au Revoir to NYC and goes to live in DC with her brother. As I said it is a quick and fun read with likable characters and good plot. I loved the dog park theme and how that became an important part of the book. Does Page gets her happy ending or not is yet to be seen cause I don't want to give away any spoilers but if you are a looking for a light read then it is definitely for you.
Happy reading!
