This series just keeps getting better and better! The folks of Pelican are battling an unknown person buying up all the available housing to turn around and rent out as holiday properties, an unknown person dressing up as a rougarou scaring off tourists, and an unknown person who is a murderer. Throw in brand new relatives from Canada who aren't behaving in a loving familial fashion and a neighboring police department that would love to run all the Crozats into jail and you have Halloween in Pelican!
Halloween is made even creepier for Maggie with a murder, appearance of a rougarou (wolfman creature), greedy "surprise" family members, bossy guests and all this while Maggie and Grandmere are planning their double wedding. When Maggie contacts a massage therapist to work at her new spa, she has no idea how much trouble is headed her way!
I enjoyed the book and it kept me reading well into the night. My favorite part of the book centered around Grandmere and her (I mean her and Maggie's) double wedding. Bo and her family are as supportive as ever and the wolfman legend added just the right amount of fright to the book! It is a wonderful Halloween mystery!
I received an ARC from NetGalley and the opinions expressed are my own.
Fans of this series will be thrilled with this latest offering.
I strongly recommend you read the series in order.
Interesting characters and a good whodunit.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
Murder in the Bayou Boneyard is the sixth in the delightfully comical Cajun country mysteries. In the latest adventure, Maggie teams up with the other local B & B's in Pelican to encourage tourists to stay and play over the Halloween holiday. The B & B owners are offering a "Pelican's Spooky Past" package that includes various offerings, everything from a pet parade to reading from a local voodoo priestess. As part of the package, Maggie has invited her distant cousin to stay and provide massages at the newly constructed spa. She gets more than she bargained for however when it becomes clear that her cousin came to town for reasons other than long overdue bonding. Her cousin has claims on the land adjacent to what Maggie's family's B & B resides on and has plans to sell the land to a chemical company. Disappointed yet distracted, Maggie turns her attention to the local sightings of a rougarou, an old Cajun legend of a creature with the face of a werewolf and the body of a man. Visitor's are being scared all over town as the rougarou keeps popping up. As the much anticipated Halloween themed play taking place appropriately enough in a cemetery begins, Maggie looks forward to some much anticipated distraction in the form of the spooky play written by Crozat attorney Quentin MacIhoney and taking place appropriately enough in the cemetery. However audience members get more excitement than they bargained for when an unanticipated individual walks on stage wearing a werewolf mask and soon collapses. It becomes apparent that the individual was poisoned and because of Maggie's close connection to the victim, she becomes the prime suspect. Although Crozat P.D. are sure Maggie had nothing to do with the murder, P.D. in the neighboring town, who have jurisdiction over the cemetery where the body was found aren't so sure. Maggie must work closely with her fiance Bo, a Crozat detective and her family to prove her innocence.
Murder in the Bayou Boneyard proves there is no better backdrop for a Halloween themed murder mystery than Cajun Country. The story is packed full of local folklore, mouth watering descriptions of Cajun delicacies, and breathtaking accounts of the local scenery that bring the Cajun county to life in vivid detail. While there are plenty of spooky surprises in store, the overall feel of the book is light and comical, with plenty of fun loving banter between the main characters. The members of the Crozat clan, Maggie included, are interesting to say the least but come through for one another in a loving and caring manner. My favorite of the brood will always be Maggie's Grandmere, who is always a laugh and remained oblivious to everything besides wedding planning and cake tasting throughout much of the story. I highly recommend this series that will leave readers longing to visit or return back to all the charms of the Cajun country.
Maggie and her family run a bed and breakfast. it is near haloween some of her relatives from far away come to visit and work there but why are they really there? if you like suspense and mystery of the boyou you will want to read the story, well written , love the grandmother i was given a copy of the book by netgalley but this is an honest review
When getting this book I found it was a part of a series. I decided to go back and binge read all of the previous books. I'm so glad I did. Such a good series. This one did not disappoint.
Setting is the town of Pelican, Louisiana. Quirky cast of characters. Language that makes you smile. Some characters that make you want to slap you mamma
While it can be read as a stand alone it is better if you read the whole series.
Thank you to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the opportunity to read and review Murder in the Bayou Boneyard.
I adore a good seasonal cozy mystery so I was excited to read this book. This is the 6th book in the series and only my 2nd one that I have read. It was easy to catch up with the characters and keep everyone straight as the author was very good at giving just enough backstory to keep us latecomers current.
I enjoyed the Halloween theme, the setting in Louisiana, the intriguing story, and all the yummy recipes!
This is one of my go to series. . It is always fun to get back to Pelican,Louisiana. I love the main character, Maggie and her family. The mystery had me guessing until the very end. I cannot wait for the next book in the series!
I reviewed a digital arc provided by Netgalley and Crooked Lane Books for an honest review. Thank you!
What a treat this book was! It had great characters (I love Maggie and her Grand-mére), some excellent mysteries, and danger seemingly around every corner. I enjoyed everything about this book and look forward to the next one.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher, Crooked Lane Books, via NetGalley. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor.

What a delightfully entertaining experience Ellen Bryon brings us in Murder in the Bayou Boneyard, the 6th book in her award-winning Cajun Country Mysteries! The fantastic characters will win your heart while haunting and homicide will keep you glued to the edge of your seat. Realistic, well developed characters, a setting that will put River Road on your bucket list, and a sometimes eerie but always complex plot make Murder in the Bayou Boneyard the perfect complement to this must- read series.
Offering the flavor of River Road, the warmth of a loving family, and an invasion of ghosts, ghoulies and Rougarou, Halloween at the Crozat’s B&B should seem perfect, if you like that sort of thing, but there is nothing about the holiday that Maggie likes. In spite of her aversion to the much-celebrated but too strange holiday, she applies her marketing skills to drawing much needed guests during the slow month of October with a haunted history theme. In her spare time, Maggie locates Tug's great-niece and encourages her to join the family's new spa as massage therapist. What could go wrong when family involved?
While Gran is playing bridezilla and planning their double wedding, Maggie and the family are dealing with spooky things, theft, shifty businessman, and murder right in their pack yard, a crime for which they look appear to be the perfect suspects.
I requested a copy of Murder in the Bayou Boneyard from Netgalley because I am totally in love with the series. All my friends will be hearing about it between now and it’s September release, but they expect that. I enjoy sharing books that excite me as all the books in this series do.
This murder mystery is set in Cajun country, which in itself makes for interesting reading and a great advertisement for visiting that part of the country!
The main characters, Maggie and her family are decent folk who run a family B&B and feed their boarders (and half the town) with delicious sounding meals and treats. Maggie created a Halloween event to attract tourists to the area, and as the festivities start rolling out, the bodies start piling up! In between trying to solve the whodunit, run the B&B, manage the Halloween events, stop an evil developer, handle her visiting relatives and plan her wedding, busy Maggie has her hands full.
This is an enjoyable read without the dark, grotesque murders that seem popular these days. My only slight criticism is that the book is a bit too long - there seem to be too many characters to keep track of, some minor ones (such as the policeman and the lawyer who just show up for food) don't really add to the plot and there also be a lot of commentary and observations that aren't pertinent to the plot either. However, I would recommend this as an enjoyable summer vacation read.
I would like to thank NetGallery for providing this book to read in exchange for an honest review.
This cozy is pack filled with excitement and intrigue, every chapter had something happening. Maggie finds herself almost blindsided but, for the clues not adding up and her intuition kicking up a notch, it could have been curtain call for her. The storyline is great along with the characters. It truly was entertaining, it had you captivated to every page, making this a must-read, folks.
Ellen Byron's Cajun Country Mysteries are, for this reader, guaranteed to be a page-turning, edge of my seat, laugh out loud, suspenseful read, and the newest addition to this fab series, Murder in the Bayou Boneyard, does not disappoint! Visiting Canadian relatives, a hipster with a desire to conquer Pelican's real estate market, scary rougarous, a chatty parrot, and a murder or two combine to make this latest mysterious romp down in the bayou a perfect cozy! Murder in the Bayou Boneyard - ça c'est bon, cher ... très, très bon! A+++
I have not read books #1-5 in the series and can be a read as a stand-alone as I did not feel left out or confused. This is an entertaining, spooky (as cozy goes) read. I loved it and will be reading the others in the series. Thanks to Crooked Lane Books, NetGalley, and Ellen Bryon for this ebook ARC. This is my honest review.
The author takes us to Cajun Country again in this novel. I feel as if I am travelling to Cajun Country through reading this novel.
We meet families who lived on plantations for generations. We meet actors who are staging a new play written by Van's new husband.
Maggie and her Gran both are preparing for their double weddings. Yes, there are dead bodies appearing again in this novel.
Maggie's Crozat cousins are visiting from Canada with unexpected results. And I loved the dogs in this story. The parrot is another story! LOL
This is a wonderful cozy mystery with the violence off camera!
Maggie Crozat— proprietress of a Louisiana bed and breakfast—is having a horrible October. She has to deal with her dislike of Halloween during a Spooky-themed month of activities that she planned for the guests at the local B&Bs. And business is being driven away between a combination of multiple Rougarou (Cajun werewolf) sightings in the area and a local entrepreneur who is snatching up all available local property to turn into cheap rentals. Meeting some of her long-lost family members should be the highlight of the month for Maggie. But sometimes family isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Maggie learns this firsthand when her long-lost cousin and her family show up and try to claim a portion of the Crozat land. Things wouldn’t be so bad if cousin Suzanne wasn’t such a mean-spirited person who is only looking out for her own personal gain. Following a family disagreement, Suzanne dies center stage during a local Halloween-themed play. With Suzanne out of the way, her husband and step-children continue with their nefarious plans to sell the Crozat land to an oil company. The local detective is determined to pin the murder on Maggie or one of her parents. To save herself, her family, and their land, Maggie must find the real killer before she winds up in jail herself.
MURDER IN THE BAYOU BONEYARD is the second Cajun Country Mystery that I’ve read. Between the two novels that I’ve read, I’ve found the series to be is very enjoyable. The characters are quirky and well fleshed out. Byron brings the rural Louisiana setting and southern culture/lifestyle to life.
As for the mystery aspect, I was kept guessing until the end. Yes, I had a strong suspicion towards one of the characters—and I was correct. But there was a twist I did not see coming. The climax fell a bit short, but, otherwise, MURDER IN THE BAYOU BONEYARD is a very enjoyable novel. As a lover of Halloween, I enjoyed the holiday-themed events. I was also rooting for Maggie to find enjoyment in the holiday.
Great cozy. Interesting characters and wonderful setting. Excellent installment in a solid series. I enjoyed the story and will recommend the book.
Through NetGalley, I received a free copy of MURDER IN THE BAYOU BONEYARD (Book 6 of the Cajun Country Mysteries) by Ellen Byron in exchange for an honest review. Someone has been buying up all of the available housing in Pelican, Louisiana, and listing those structures as day rentals. This has had horrible fiscal consequences for the local inns. Maggie Crozat, who runs her family’s historic plantation home as Cajun Country B&B, joins with the owners of five similar plantation home B&Bs to host a macabre October event each weekend called “Pelican’s Spooky Past.” However, someone seems determined to wreck the event; each B&B is haunted by guest sightings of a rougarou. This begins to scare off the newly acquired customers, which brings the B&Bs back to financial hardship. When someone dressed as a rougarou interrupts one of events staged in the Dupois cemetery and promptly drops dead, the Crozat family falls under suspicion. Maggie must find the killer before her entire family is charged with murder.
I liked this book and enjoy the series. I recommend this book to fans of the series. I recommend the series to fans of Ellen Byron and to fans of cozy mysteries featuring murder, small towns, regional traditions, local festivals, weather events, historic family homes, art, and pets. I note that any attorneys reading this book may fall out of the story for a moment due to a mix up between a prescription (adjective) period and a prescription (noun) and how it applies to a situation presented in the book.

It's nearing Halloween and Maggie Crozat and her parents, owner of the Cajun Country B&B, along with the other B&Bs in Pelican, Louisiana are promoting Halloween related activities.
They scheduled a play in a historic graveyard and readings from a local VooDoo priestess, Helene. Maggie has created a spa on her premises that she is hoping will be a major draw along with the masseuse she is bringing in--a remotely related cousin she has never met.
Cousin Susannah brings her husband Doug and his twins. Maggie outfitted her art studio in the old schoolhouse for the family and began setting appointments when Susannah announced she owned half the schoolhouse and the property on the other side. Unfortunately, at the finale of the first play a rougarou charges the stage, screaming, and collapses. Unmasked, it is Susannah. Maggie and the Crozat's are the obvious suspects when it is determined a murder.
The murder occurred in the neighboring jurisdiction and they smell an easy solve. In the meantime, her Grandmeré is becoming a bridezilla as she is planning a wedding with Maggie and her beau, Detective Bo Durand of their precinct. Bo's son is looking forward to Halloween with the same fervor as her Gran the wedding.
I thoroughly enjoy the sense of humor this author brings to her storytelling, which is always well-plotted and easy paced, with fully developed characters alive with Southern hospitality personality. The family melds easily together, the occasion is atmospheric, and there are always tidbits of Louisiana Cajun folklore and culture, foods, descriptions of the land and people. The casual road to the conclusion sneaks up on you, as do the perps in the final reveal.
I received this digital download from the publisher through NetGalley and totally appreciated the opportunity to read and review Book 6. This author's writing style is compelling and if you haven't yet discovered her books, now is the time to pre-order. Highly recommended!
Murder in the Bayou Boneyard Cajun Country Mystery #6 by Ellen Byron
Reviewed April 12, 2020 3.5 Stars Good ~ but not 4 Stars for me!
Although this is my first [author: Ellen Bryon] Cajun mystery and it is #6 in the series, it wasn’t too difficult to get caught up in the Cajun vibes. The story line features a small town in Louisiana ~ Pelican Louisiana ~ where the local B & Bs are experiencing some financial struggles. A cell phone company is making it super easy for locals to rent their spare rooms for tourists.
Maggie Crozat is the proprietor of the historic Cajun Country B & B. she as well as other B&B owners decide they need to do something “new” to attract new folks as well as keep their regulars coming back.
They come up with an idea to capitalize on Pelican Cajun history and our love of Halloween as a theme ~ the spookier the better.
Since this is a mystery there is, of course, going to be someone showing up dead.
This book is scheduled to be published in early September. Perfect for an enjoyable Halloween read.
Not only that, this novel includes some yummy Cajun recipes which are sure to be a hit with any book club hostess.
Want to thank NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for this early release granted to me in exchange for an honest review. Publishing Release Date scheduled for September 9, 2020
