First, I liked this book. It was not as intense as some of the Kate Burkholder books in my opinion however, in this time of Corona virus nothing seems that intense alongside of real life, so it's hard to say. I was able to finish it, which I have been finding difficult right now. If you've read the earlier books, absolutely, read this one. If you haven't, I'd be inclined to recommend that you go back and start from the beginning. I gave it four stars. That's probably a bit high but three would be too low, so... Be well, everyone.
While I was poised for an exciting ride, this story was just slow and drawn out. Not repetitive or unnecessary exactly, just the pace moved slowly and it was difficult to keep my interest.
This was one of the better books in the series! I loved the new characters and the deeper look at Kate’s backstory.
Outsider is a well written and entertaining romantic suspense. A plot that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I highly recommend this book. I received an arc from the publisher and Netgalley and this is my unbiased review.
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Kate is about to collide with someone from her past. She must trust her gut while protecting the Amish community from her long lost friend Gina. Is Gina telling the truth or will she drag Kate down with her. This is a wonderful series. Kate is a strong character, and I love the light that is she's on the Amish community. Very enjoyable.
This was an excellent addition to an already wonderful series. Kate Burkholder is one of my favorite characters and the series' main premise of a former Amish returning to her home as a police chief makes for very interesting reading. This particular story focused on a character from her past but also served to establish Burkholder as the positive, resilient character she is in the books.
This new entry in the Kate Burkholder series brings Kate and John Tomasetti closer together. An old friend from Chief Burkholder's past appears in a blizzard, bringing trouble with her to Painters' Mill. Kate and Tomasetti are caught in the middle of a big city police fight, where cops are attacking and even killing one another.
The bad weather and snow complicate matters. The two struggle to unravel the truth before it's too late.
Kate Burkholder is the chief of police for a small farming community, Painter's Mill, Ohio. On a blustery snowy day, Kate's former roommate and partner Gina shows up in Painter's Mill. She is running from a dangerous situation. Stranded, an Amish widower and his children take Gina into their Amish home.
Gina has a story of corruption and deceit. And people who will do anything to stop. Her. The combined mystery and authentic depiction of Amish life make for a great story.
I was given this book by NetGalley for an honest review -

Packs A Powerful Punch!!
Chief of Police in Painters Mill, Kate Burkholder is my favorite ex Amish police officer. It's no secret I love this series. This installment was a little different but no less intense. The characters are so vivid they jump off the page.
This was another action packed from start to finish edition. This series just gets better with every book.
A woman from Kate's past shows up wounded and on the run. She needs Kate's help. Adam Lengacher finds Gina Colorosa while he is on a sleigh ride with his children. He thinks shes dead.
A huge snow storm, power, police corruption and greed are the backdrop of this 12th book. Tomasetti plays a larger role than he has in a while which makes it even better.
Sammy stole the show.
I received a Advance Reader Copy of this book from #NetGalley, the publisher and the author in exchange for an honest review.
I LOVE this series!!! I have read every single one and hope there are many more to come!
Linda Castillo's latest edition in the Kate Burkhder series "Outsider" is yet another great entry to this serirs!
An old friend of Kate suddenly appears back in her life again but this friend just happens to be on the run from the police! Drum roll please ....What a conundrum for Kate! This is where everything gets interesting. Will Kate help her old friend or turn her in?!
I can't recommend this series enough! 5 stars from me! Can't wait for more!
A huge thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for allowing me the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book!
I have read every book in the Kate Burkholder detective series, so I was very excited to receive an advanced reader’s copy of this book. This latest installment centers around Kate’s backstory as a detective, where her past collides with the present. I really enjoyed this one! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced reader’s copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
When Adam Lengacher and his children find an injured woman while out on a sleigh ride, they contact Painters Mill Police chief Kate Burkholder. Kate is surprised to see former friend and roommate and fellow officer, Gina Colorosa from her early days at the police academy. As Kate tries to find out why Gina is in Painter Mill, she has to face questions about how she got there i a blizzard, why she was shot and by who? Who is she trying to hide from?
I could answer these questions for you but, I think you will have more fun reading Outsider for yourself and finding the answers on your own! Linda Castillo takes us inside the world of the Amish and a small town police chief in a well written story that will have you staying up past your bedtime to get the answers!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martins Press for n advanced copy of this book for an honest, fair review.
And always thanks to Linda Castillo for another adventure with Chief Burkholder.
I have loved all of Linda Castillo's books, and Outsider maybe my new favorite. The Amish faith fascinates me. I especially enjoy how real her characters are. This will be influential, I am sure, in getting more people to read this excellent author's books.
I absolutely LOVE this series!!! I was so stoked to receive this ARC and couldn't wait to read it! I try to read my ARC's in order of publication, but not this one! The Outsiders went straight to the top and deservedly so! This is yet another stellar entry in the Kate Burkholder series. EVERY book is great!! What I like about this one was it had a little more history into Kate's earlier years after leaving her Amish family behind and moving to the big city. She meets Gina Colorosa and they bond immediately and attend the Police Academy together. The women remain close on the force until a questionable act from Gina tears them apart. They reunite in present day now as Gina is on the run from more questionable actions. Is she a good cop or a bad cop? The answers are all are in this action packed story!! Another thing that made me happy is that Kate's significant other, Agent Tomasetti, seems to be getting more and more of an important role with each offering. Hurry up and get married already! Also, loved the Lengacher family and am ready for Mona to have her day!!
THANK YOU to NetGalley, Linda Castillo and St. Martin's Press for this much appreciated ARC!!
I will happily review to Amazon, KOBO and Barnes and Noble on the July 7th publication date.
I love this series and author. She makes you interested in the little town of Painters mill and the Amish who aren’t always what they seem . Good addition to the series
When Adam Lengacher and his children find an injured woman in a snowstorm. They take her home and call the police. Kate Bulkholder arrives at their home to discover a ghost from her past. Gina Colorosa was a waitress when she met Kate Burholder fresh from the farm. She takes young Kate under her wing and encourages her to become a police officer, setting her on the path to become Chief of Police of Painter's Mill. Sadly, Gina is running from some bad cops and the more Kate learns the more she fears that Gina isn't as snow white as she protrays herself. Kate works with Tomasetti to learn all she can to keep Gina, Adam, and his family safe. Linda Castillo writes a good mystery and though this is more thriller than mystery it kept my attention. Her books are darker than the usual cozy mysteries that I read, but I enjoy her characters and the glimpse into the Amish culture as well. #netgalley #outsider
This is such a great series! This book gives us some in sight to Kate’s life just before she became a cop. It starts out with a bang and stays fast paced til the thrilling conclusion. I enjoyed the story and look forward to Kate’s next adventure. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the early copy
Kate Burkholder #12 finally came out and I couldn’t wait to get started on reading it. I tried to read the book as slow as I could....this did not happen as I just had to keep reading and reading and reading. Linda Castillo continues to thrill her readers with suspense, corruption, romance, murder, police corruption, drama and insight into the life of the Amish.
I have to say I felt the story seemed to go stagnant during the snow storm and being stranded in a house which is why this was not a 5 star for me. I do love the relationship between Kate and John and hope to see it keep going as strong as it is.
Highly recommend you read this series......
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author, Linda Castillo, for the opportunity to read and give my honest review about this book.
I never miss a Linda Castillo book and am fascinated by Kate Burkholder and her life. Most of the books have exposed us to Kate's relationship with Tomasetti, her tenuous relationship with her family after she left the Amish community. As the Chief of Police she frequently deals with the Amish, and we have seen that dynamic.
What we have not seen in much detail is Kate's life before she returned to the area while she was a city cop in Columbus, Ohio. Kate was rescued as a naive teenager in the big city and grew into a capable woman and cop. She met Gina almost immediately and formed a friendship she expected to last forever. Both young, driven, new cops ready to take on anything.
A entirely new side of Kate is revealed and the interplay and personal introspection is deep and compelling. Sometimes you really cannot leave the past in the past. You just have to find out how to not let it hold you hostage.
Another great book in this series.
