I was unsure about this book at the beginning. So many people in my book club loved this book, so I pushed forward. I’m so happy I did! It was a really good read. I did not expect the ending to go the way it did! If you’re looking for a book with twists and a good ending, read this!
Pete Riley opens the front door, not knowing that the man on his doorstep is about to destroy his life. Will the secrets, mistakes, and lies of the past have the power to implode two families?
I liked the premise of Playing Nice, but ultimately had some issues with the plot itself. The novel starts with a familiar story and, although it does travel down an unexpected path, the implausibility of some of the plot ruins what the author was trying to accomplish. None of the characters are that likable, especially as the novel meanders down a path to past mistakes. Although the beginning of the novel is thought provoking, Playing Nice is basically just another mystery/thriller/suspense. For these reasons, I would be hesitant to recommend the novel to other readers.
Disclaimer: I was given an Advanced Reader's Copy of Playing Nice by NetGalley and the publisher, Ballantine Books. The decision to review this novel was entirely my own.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get to read Playing Nice By J. P. Delaney before it expired and disappeared from Net Galley, so I’m unable to leave a review.
My apologies. 😢
What a great story! Really interesting plot! A page turner for sure! Looking forward to reading more by this author!
I received this ARC from Netgalley in return for an honest review. Thank you to Netgalley and Random House Publishing Group.
Pete and Maddie are parents to Theo, a precocious two year old boy. One day Pete answers the door to strangers to be told that his son is not his and has been switched at birth by overworked staff at an understaffed NHS hospital. To compound the issue, their real son has severe brain damage as a result of premature birth. Although shocked to their core, Pete and Maddie reluctantly feel they should make the best of a bad situation and try to make the situation work by allowing their son to know his real parents as well as get to know their birth son David.
Although both sets of parents agree to join forces to sue the hospital for negligence, the situation starts to unravel quickly and Pete and Maddie find themselves ensnared in a tangled web of deception, where their own faults and desires contribute to their manipulation by a very cunning psychopath.
All in all, I very much enjoyed this novel. The author has done their homework regarding preemie care as well as the British family court system. The plot twists and turns were well executed, building upon each other so that I was completely unable to put the novel down. This led to some very late nights indeed. The characters, although not likeable, except perhaps for Pete, were well rounded, complete with well-thought out foibles.
I definitely recommend this novel. Bravo!
I tried to read this several times and just couldn’t get into it for some reason. It’s almost hard to believe that this is the same author of THE GIRL BEFORE.
My gosh this was such a great book! Imagine answering the door one day and finding that your child isn’t really your child. And also finding out that your real child is being raised by someone else. And then thinking that the two families involved can work together and come to an amicable solution for everyone involved. But of course that doesn’t happen...
Playing Nice is a story about two babies switched at birth and how the two sets of parents try to deal with it. It’s about deceit, manipulation and murder.
I wasn’t expecting this kind of story from JP Delaney but was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it. Very well written as usual from this author.. Great characters who are far from perfect but you can’t help but like and even a few surprises.
Wow, was this a break neck page turner! This book had layers upon layers.
.
One day Pete opens the door to any parent’s worst nightmare. The son him and his partner have been raising for the last two years was switched at birth in the NICU.
.
The two families are traumatized by the news but are determined to find a modern solution to their family problems, but what happens when not everyone is as they say they are and they stop playing nice?
.
This one had me hooked from page one. It really challenges the thought of nature vs. nurture and how different people handle the same stressful situation. Thank you to #NetGalley and #Ballantinebooks
I loved this thriller! Pete and Maddie have a baby that spends his first few weeks in the Nicu. They are surprised one day by a couple knocking on their door. Seems the couple's babies were accidently switched at birth. From there the novel takes a dark and twisting path. Absolutely engaging.
Lunatic people! A baby switch at birth! Manipulation! Oh man this was just what the doctor ordered! I literally couldn’t stop turning the pages!
First off I want to say a huge thank you to the publisher Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine , the author J.P. Delaney , and to NetGalley for inviting me to read an review it, and sorry for been a bit late with it. Now on to my thoughts : WOW what a read , one of my friends recommended it to me as well as picked it from a list of NetGalley ARCs I showed her , she kept telling me I had to read it , that I would love it , and that it was twisted just like I like my thrillers and man was she right, I'm so glad that I listened and read it this month . Because once I started I didn't want to put it down. And it was all thinks to how twisted it was , and the psychopath that was in the story, it was the the type of read that I would pick up and read on a stormy day because of the atmosphere which was gripping, as well as psychological, and can we talk about the high tensioned it makes you feel as well as the family drama plays out and lets just say that by the time the story is done your poor nerves are shoot .
to read this book thanks to NetGalley. I am a huge fan of this author and was thrilled to be approved for this title. It did not disappoint and I loved it. It was one of best yet! . It was fast paced, entertaining, and well written. I loved the characters and couldn’t wait to see where their story went next. it kept me guessing until the end! This one is a must read for all thriller fans. I will always be a fan and can’t wait for the next book from this amazing author. I have recommended this one to all of my friends snd family. Thanks again so much to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
What if your family isn’t your family. Your baby whom you’ve nurtured and loved for 2 years. Isn’t yours. What would you do?
A parents worst nightmare! What would you do if the child you thought you gave birth to isn't biologically yours; your biological child is being raised by another family as the two babies were swapped at birth?
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author, for an ARC of this book, in exchange for an honest review.
The synopsis of this book sounded intriguing to me so I requested a copy to read.
Unfortunately, I have tried reading this book on 2 separate occasions and during that 2nd attempt, I have only managed to make it halfway through so I'd rather stop here and state that this book just wasn't for me.
I've never read JP Delaney--I KNOW. But I've never read a switched at birth premise for a thriller before and needed to give it a shot. I went through all the emotions reading this book and the tension kept me on edge till I turned the last page. Easy to see what all the Delaney hype is about, and I'll definitely be diving into their backlist stat.
Phew! Babies switched at birth and sociopaths, oh my! I really enjoyed reading Playing Nice by JP Delaney. I liked two other books by this author and DNF one, so I went in not knowing what to expect. I also started reading without knowing what it was about & the beginning of the book definitely triggered my NICU PTSD. While those parts were hard for me to read, this one was FUN and I loved the ending! Let’s not dig too deep about what that means about me. 😅 Fans of psychological thrillers will love this one. 4.5 stars
This book is a parents worst nightmare. It kept me captivated from page to page and I couldn't put this book down. So many great twist and turns and secrets to uncover.
This is very intense. I have read a few JP Delaneys now and they are all really good. I really liked Pete and Maddie was a really compelling character. Sometimes you felt so frustrated on their behalf. My mother has said she wants to read this now.
