This is a cute story about two pups who go off on an adventure, lose track of time, and then get lost trying to find their way home. Of course, they persevere and figure out how to get home, much to the delight of their young owner, and make plans to do it all over again tomorrow. It's the kind of story that has a classic feel to it.
Because I was getting that classic story vibe, I was a bit thrown off by the illustrations. They're quite vibrant and intense. Reading the illustrator bio at the end, I guess she is a comic illustrator, and I can definitely see that influence in these pictures. It's not my favorite type of illustration for picture books, but I know others quite enjoy it.
This would be a fun addition to a classroom or home library to enjoy again and again.

Cute little story. I like the idea that the dogs find their way home. The illustrations are cute and so is the story.
Thank you to NetGalley, IBPA and Doodle and Peck Publishing for this digital copy.
Unfortunately, I will not be able to review this book. I was not aware that books downloaded on the Digital Edition app would expire. I was disappointed as I was ready to read this and looking forward to reviewing it before publication date.
I am only giving this a 1 star because I have to give a star rating.
This rating does not reflect the content of the book.
I was expecting this to be absolutely cute from the cover.
A Dogs’ Day of Adventure
Are you tired of children's picture books that have a strong message? If so, this book may be the antidote you're looking for! I discerned no strong message or moral lesson that a child should take away from this book. It's about two puppies who managed to get out of their yard and have a grand adventure until it starts to turn dark and they are unsure of how to find their way home. They do make it back safe and sound, of course, as this is a children's book. I think the author, though, missed a golden opportunity to foreshadow what happened at the end of the book. She has the puppies see flowers and horses that they then recall seeing on their way out when they left their home. The author should have shown the pups interacting with these on the way out so that it would make sense when they saw them again… that they would recognize and remember them from earlier in the day. At the very least, they could have included these elements in the illustrations of what took place during their adventurous day. The puppies are cute, and the illustrations are adorable, so a young child who likes puppies will most likely enjoy this story of two of them having a big day out.
Love the cover.
Love the illustrations.

We loved this really sweet book. We snuggled down and read it at bedtime.
My daughters loved the words and the character. It was a lovely read and we really enjoyed it lots.
Thankyou for the arc copy.
My students thoroughly enjoyed this picture book and admired the illustrations. We also read about the author and illustrator and they were shocked to find out that the dogs form the book are named after author’s dogs.
Its about Kaya and Hazel, two dogs who wander out through the open gates to a lake and how they come back. The illustrations are adorable.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the eARC
*received for free from netgalley for honest review* Really loved the art for this book, it is just too cute!!! :0 good book for younger kids or a quick bedtime story!
Lovely pictures with a sweet story of the dogs adventure when leaving their safe haven at home. They soon found the way back home again.
Pups on the Run is a great adventure to read with your little ones. With parent tips to reading your child, you can engage your child in this great adventure while learning. Two pups wonder off and before they know it they become lost. As they try to find their way, they see many different things that they would have missed.
The author was inspired by her two pups and along with the illustrations, you will live the adventure as well.
A Special Thank you to Doodle and Peck Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
Sweet book about dogs escaping, a quick adventure with some lessons on friendship. The tumble nag puppies and carefree fun recalls the Pokie Little Puppy books. I love the interactions between the dog and the way they stuck together.
A sweet story with beautiful, fun illustration.
The story of two puppies who get lost whilst adventuring away from their home. The puppies are easy to love and clearly having a lot of fun.
This would be great book to share with young children with plenty to discuss as they progress through the story.
Delightful story of puppies getting lost while playing just away from their home, and then following the clues to find their way home again. Very sweet!
The art style is colorful and well done, the story short, with a bit of a moral to not wander. (But once wandering, we always tell our children to stay put so adults can find them, so there is that conversation of human resolution versus pet resolution needing doing, so children don't take the wrong message from the story.)
5 stars for cute sweet short story for the youngest of children.
Thank you to NetGalley and to Doodle and Peck Publishing for an ARC for review. Honest opinion given.
This is a really fun read! Encourages exploring and also gives a gentle reminder to remember the way home! I will definitely recommend this title for families to enjoy together! Not to mention the two pups are super cute!
A perfect quick read for young children.
2 cute dogs get themselves lost and have an adventure what's not to love.
Thanks to Doodle and Peck Publishing and NetGalley for this free ARC in return for my honest review.
Here is a lovely little book for youngsters. I felt the illustrations were perfect for the story and the emotions involved. The story is quite simple in that two puppies run out of the back yard and have so much fun they get lost. They are scared and cannot find their way home until they use their senses to guide them back to safety. Simple and yet it teaches a very good lesson and in the end all comes out fine for these two cute puppies!
This book is a story about a couple of dogs escaping their yard and larking around before getting lost and having to find their way home. However, it's pointless. There's no "lesson" to learn, the story isn't that entertaining, and it's as basic as a kid's book can get. The illustrations are pretty cute and the vocabulary is simple enough for early readers so I'd recommend for 3-5 year olds.
Ada loves dogs and absolutely adored this book! It has such lovely illustrations, and tells a wonderful story about pups and their adventure. It shared lots of other animals and surroundings, giving us a brilliant opportunity to point them out and make their noises, as the pups passed them. We love this book and think it is a great book to buy!
Pups on the Run by Hannah Beene Hurdle is a cute adventure story about two mischievous pups. The story follows Kaya and Hazel, two dogs who can't resist the open gate. They want to see what is out there, so off they go, playing in the big, wide, world. They are having so much fun, they don't realize it is getting dark. When they try to find their way home, they realize they are lost and begin to wander into the woods. Hazel gets quite scared, but eventually they see and smell some familiar sights and quickly make their way home. Both my grandchildren were happy that they made it home safely and were quick to point out that they shouldn't go out alone, but we also talked about who might have left the gate open. There is not really a strong message in this one, just a cute story about two dogs having an adventure. The illustrations were quite cute and we enjoyed the expression on their whimsical faces. Both the 3 and 6 year old enjoyed this story, but each took something different from the story. I recommend this to families with dogs, as well as schools and classrooms especially when learning about pets and how to care for them.
