The Vanishing Point is a mediocre novel based on a tired child abduction plot. Writers love child abduction (and its cousin, human trafficking) because people get very upset by it, which is justifiable in the rare instances when they actually happen, but sort of manipulative when crime writers fan the flames of hysteria. The novel's characters are wooden stereotypes and the buildup to the surprise ending is too dull to make the ending worthwhile.
