What a fabulous start to a brand new series featuring Detective Casey White and one that I was completely hooked on from the start. The story starts with Casey going on a holiday whilst also looking for any clues about her daughter who was kidnapped from her home home fourteen years earlier and Casey is determined to find her. She is following a lead when she comes across a young girl in a nightgown with severe injuries and what follows is just the start of a complex case that Casey gets involved in.
I wasn’t so sure about Casey at the start but as book progressed I really warmed to her and her ongoing commitment to finding her missing daughter.
The story goes at a fair old pace with some surprises that made for a read that was hard to put down, it’s well written and the characters all good and I can recommend for all lovers of thrillers.
My thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me the chance to read the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
I really enjoyed this new mystery and new to me author. I felt that characters were well developed and plot fast paced . Good book!
What a great way to be introduced to a new author.
I had never heard of B.R Spangler before I read this book but I’m going to be looking out for his work in the future
In this he introduces us the Detective Casey White, and I suspect a few more recurring characters for future books.
Casey is eat to like and empathise with.
The story is brilliantly written and has at least 3 main threads interwoven to form a real page turning tale
Loved it
This book made me fall back in love with crime fiction. I think it’s hard to make this genre unique, but this book did a grand job. I loved the twists and turns; Hannah’s kidnap, the mysterious girls turning up dead and a detective desperate to find the truth.
I didn’t much care for Casey at first and found it hard to connect to her. However, as the book progressed, I grew to like her, and I admired her determination and drive to get her daughter back.
The plot was interesting. I loved the complexity of the investigations, the multiple murders and cases, and them eventually coming together.
Everything fitted together so seamlessly. By the middle of the book we have several cases with no known links, but it all filters into one. Once I hit the halfway point I couldn’t stop reading, I had to forcibly remove myself so I could get some sleep!
I’m so excited to see where this series goes. It took me a while to warm up to Casey but by the end of the book I felt connected to her. I also hope we get to see more Jericho because I love his character. I’m interested to find out what happens next in Casey’s story.
The Taken from Home by B. R. Spangler Reviewed April 2, 2020 3+ Stars
Hannah is taken from home 15 years ago when she was a toddler. Mom saw the whole thing but could stop the car. Mom is Detective Casey White and she has not given up on finding her daughter.
Casey’s investigation takes her to the Outer Banks, NC. Claiming she is on vacation when in truth she has a lead of the garage that services the type of car that drove away with Hannah. She is somewhat and cannot find the Fitz Garage”. She does find a young girl, Hannah’s age who has been beaten and is running away. Is this Hannah?
Personal Note: My family has vacation on the Outer Banks every year until we moved to California. We would say we were heading to Nags Head when actually we stay in Kill Devil Hills. However, all the years we vacation there we were never aware that there was a detention center in nearby Manteo, NC. Of course, this story is fiction!
B. R. Spangler is new to me. However, he also writes as Brian Spangler. He has another Outer Banks novel [book: Deadly Tide] which is Sheriff Jericho Quinn #1. In this novel the Sheriff’s name is Jericho Flynn but sure sounds like the same sheriff to me. I did read the uncorrected digital galley so perhaps the name will be corrected or Detective Casey White Book #2 is going to clarify a few things.
I did like this story~ I also like twists and turns. I also liked the characters ~ most of the time ~ Casey got annoying now and then ~ but I probably would be just as bad if my daughter had been kidnapped.
Want to thank NetGalley and Publisher Bookouture for this early release granted to me in exchange for an honest review. Publishing Release Date scheduled for May 15, 2020
A police investigation into an abandoned yacht with two girls combined with a missing person case of the detective's daughter. The pace started very well with the investigation advancing on expected lines. Then it veers off in a different direction and in the later half I felt the author was just filling the pages. Some amount of editing would be nice as I felt myself wanting to close the book.
Wow, I really, really enjoyed this book. This is a new author for me, and I see that this is the start of a new series as well. I just loved the way that Casey's personal life, problems and past were incorporated in her current investigation and how things seemed to flow together towards the end. I can't wait to read some more of Casey, and see if the ending of the first book (no spoilers) is resolved in the next book. Highly recommended!
This is a fast paced thriller and I couldn’t put it down!
Detective Casey White stumbles upon a young girl with devastating injuries while on holiday in the Outer Banks. She’s only there following up a lead on her daughter, kidnapped many years previously. This chance encounter leads to a massive investigation and the discovery of a serial killer.
I liked the character of Casey White and will look forward to reading more books about her. I hope this also means we’ll learn more about Jericho!

This was a emotional twist and turns.
Detective Casey just discover a young girl body dress in white nightgown she fears it’s her daughter Hannah who was taking from her home fourteen years ago.
When looking at the young girl injuries she realize it’s not her daughter but someone else family tragedy. While she digs deeper into child missing case she founds out the young girl name is Cheryl and that her and one other little girl her sister was taken while they were on vacation. The only difference is the sister was found dead but someone was keeping Cheryl alive and Casey is asking why keep her alive then killed her.
As she race to found a link to this crime another teenage body is found and while she comb through the forest what she finds shock her and she can’t help but wondering if this crimes is connected to her daughter being taken as she fights the emotions of finally maybe getting answer about her daughter she fears she too late to save her as she vow to take this killer down before more victims is taken.
