I received a free copy of this book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.

The very first vampire book I read was Dracula, and I loved it. I have read a few more that I thoroughly enjoyed, but this is not one. I found the characters flat and could not connect with them. I was disappointed. I won’t say that I will not read the book when it comes out, but I can’t say that I will either.

I expected more from this author. I hope she delivers.

This is a really short sneak peek, but I even with the short length I can tell I’m going to love this! Ahdieh created something really fantastic here. Excellent world building and unique characters. Love that it’s set in New Orleans! I can’t wait to read the rest!

This was only a sneak peek and so I can only comment on the beginning of the book. However, the sneak peek did it's job. I'm thoroughly interested in finding out what happens and reading the book. And if this one continues to be interesting, as the beginning suggests, I'm sure I'll be excited for the second installment that is coming out soon.

I love the setting, I love the fact that vampires are back in style, since I do love myself a good paranormal vampire love story. And this seems to have that. There is intrigue, there is crime and suspense, mystery, paranormal action, characters that draw me in from the beginning.

I look forward to finishing this book and only wish this was not just a sneak peak, but the entire novel.

I knew this book was about vampires before picking it up. And in truth, I really only read the sample for <a href="https://s3.amazonaws.com/netgalley-covers/cover186670-medium.png"><em>The Beautiful</em></a> by Renée Ahdieh to determine if it's something I would actually be interested in reading. I've never really been a vampire fan, to tell you the truth. My foray into those kinds of worlds really did kind of begin and end with <em>Twilight</em>, sad as it is. I've read a few other books, but none of them actually ever stuck with me. And I never even bothered with most of the shows or movies--though I do love <em>Underworld </em>immensely--and I guess the fact of the matter is that I just don't find <em>"dangerous"</em> men alluring or attractive.

For <em>The Beautiful</em>, I'll give Ahdieh this; she's done a pretty excellent job with her villain. I only got a brief interaction with him, but damn. That was impressive. Did it endear me to want to read the book? Not really. I'm not a fan of mystery novels, either. This has a lot to do with the fact that, too often, I've already figured out the mystery long before it's revealed. And in that sense, the fun of it is kind of ruined? I mean, sure, it feels <em>great</em> to be right in my deductions...but past that? Meh.

And I'm just not here for the dangerous attraction thing.

The writing isn't bad, but there were also <em>far</em> too many descriptions. I'm sorry, but if I spend that much time reading your book and I still don't feel like I know the main character, there's a problem. There wasn't enough dialogue, either. I just felt like I was reading a summary that the author forgot wasn't supposed to last this long.

I fully recognize that my dislike of this book so far has a lot more to do with me at times than it does with the book, though. I'm glad I got a chance to read a sample rather than grabbing the whole book and realizing that I wasn't into it. I don't consider this a DNF since I technically did finish the excerpt, but I also don't see myself picking it up at all. This is definitely a book best left to the vampire and mystery lovers. I'll wash my hands of it.

This is a short preview of the longer book, which is now published. Fans of twilight will enjoy this book. Renee creates a very sensuous world, and paces her plot well. It was a fun and engrossing read.

Interesting so far. The story seems to have a dark vibe that I feel like I would enjoy. Overall, the sneak peek holds much mystery enough for me to attempt reading further .

This was a fun sample. I can’t review the book because the entire text wasn’t available, but it seems spooky AF.

After this sneak peek I'm so intrigued by this story. This book was already on my radar but now I'll definitely read it! I can't wait to get my hands on a copy.

This was just a sneak peak, only the first couple chapters, so I don't feel it's fair to do a complete review. Instead, I will just say that it left me wanting more! I'll be reading this book as soon as I can get my hands on the whole thing.

My thoughts

Would I recommend it? NO

Will I be going on with the series ? No

Would I read anything else by this author? No

I was so hoping that this would be good but sadly for me it was not, all I can say is thank goodness it was just a sneak peek because other wish I would have DNF it , which I could of done with this but I was so hoping that with just the bit I was reading it would get better but it didn't, not once did I get lost in the story or did I want to to get to knew the characters, in fact I can't recall anything about them. With that said want to think Netgalley for letting me at lest trying it out.

The vampire theme has been on a bit of a hiatus since the whirlwind that was the Twilight Saga and I think it was a break many of us Young Adult Fiction fans needed to recover. It seems there weren't many authors who wanted to take on the vampire novel and I think after many years some are now feeling like they can dabble in the themes again. Renee Ahdieh has - in my opinion - done a really great job of bringing back the vampires in The Beautiful. One of my favourite parts of this novel is the setting and the characters and plot development. This is the first book I've read of Renee's and it has made me keen to try her other fictional works to see if they are just as good as this book. The setting is great and really sucks the reader into the world and makes us feel like we are there with the characters. The relationships and development of these, is really fun, engaging and interesting and I am looking forward to following their stories in the next installment.

The sneak peek at "The Beautiful" by Renee Ahdieh was a perfect fit for me right now! I've been so curious about this book and I was super excited to receive the sneak peek to see if I would really enjoy it! The book is set in 1872 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The story follows the main character Celine as she leaves Paris and is taken in by a convent located in New Orleans. Trying to escape her past, Celine finds that New Orleans is filled with danger among the glamorous underground scene.

Needless to say this Sneak Peak showed me exactly what I needed to make a decision and purchase the book. I was wrapped up in Celine's story and enjoyed the character interactions between Celine and Pippa. At the end of the Sneak Peek, I was left wondering about who Odette really was and dying (pun intended) to learn more about what mysteries the French Quarter had in store for the characters. This book is officially up next on my "to be read" list!

*This is my review of the whole book, not just this sneak peak*

I so badly wanted to like this book but alas I did not. Three stars is me being generous. This book really was not for me. Look, I love vampires, so when this book was said to include them and the location was New Orleans I squealed in delight. But it was not meant to be.

Supernaturals: the supernatural world is not explained. At all. The creatures that live in this otherwolrd are not mentioned clearly. There is just no world-building at all. I do not know anything and I have truly read every word of this book.

Writing style: I could not get used to the way this book was written. The author used too many details, too many descriptions and way too few actual plot points. The entire story doesn’t feel done, it feels as thought parts of this story have not been included in the novel I got.

Characters: although the characters were all vastly different I still found them boring, flat and uninteresting. Even the beautiful devil himself aka Bastien. I did not feel close to anyone, did not mourn any deaths or was outraged at people getting hurt. I just did not have a connection with anyone.

Language: this book has a lot of French in it. If you don’t know any French then that is seriously taking some nuances of the book away. I speak a little French so I could understand enough of it to make sense of the sentences. The important lines are translated, but the subtle little things are not which, if you don’t speak French, can be of great annoyance because you don’t quite get what they’re saying.

Murder mystery: this book is supposed to be about some kind of murder mystery. It did not feel that mysterious to me as the reader can read into the thoughts of the killer. The bodies are all mauled by some rabid animal which is clearly a vampire attack and the immortals in the story know that. They probably also knew exactly who the murderer was this whole time or at least its motive. Nothing felt mysterious to me, it was just several murders…

I’m just very disappointed by this book. I can see the potential. I can see why some will like it. I just didn’t. It’s not the book for me. Three stars is all it is getting and I’m truly feeling generous giving it that rating.

This was just a sneak peak, but definitely planning on reading the whole book. So excited to read a new vampire story, kind of gives Interview With a Vampire vibes since it takes place in New Orleans. Looking forward to seeing what happens with Celine, and finding out if Sebastian is good or bad. . .
