This will be my honest review in exchange for the sample of the eARC “The Beautiful” that was very kindly sent to me by NetGalley, since I have the physical book I would make a complete review.
This is a historic romance with the gothic ambience of New Orleans in 1872.
We have 2 perspectives, which we read along the book, alternating between each other, which made the book very intriguing, urging me to find out who gave us one of the perspectives.
On one side we have the vision and description of murders that are happening. The other narrative is from our protagonist young lady, called Celine, a dressmaker from Paris that ran and got refuge in a convent where she pretends to stay to hide from her past. She’s rapidly sucked into the dark underworld of this city, intrigued by the amount of killings that are happening.
People assume there’s a serial killer on the loose, and Celine might be the next.
Something very positive about this character is that I can feel she is a strong person, not the usual naive girl that needs assistance.” She was no lamb. She was alion.”
The writer makes us emerge into the story by her amazing description and atmospheric writing style, I love to see cultural diversity I’m Portuguese and every time the word Portuguese was mentioned I felt so happy, we can very subliminally see Celine being described has Asian, Michael our detective is Italian has well has the layer being described has Indian, the subject doesn’t make a lot of emphasis but we see the point and why, in that time was happening, turns all the story realistic lightly touching the subject of inclusion and racism, the point of it is that makes me happy and proud to know that I’m supporting writers that deserve it for being so inclusive.
I feel that the book delivered what was promised, we get all the answers to our questions, who is murdering, is there more than just vampires? Etc…
The romance it’s a slow burn which I appreciate gives it another dimension, we feel the tension and attraction. I liked to see how things had to happen between them so far, the intensification of their feelings is plausible.
In all, I feel that the plot wasn’t too complex but the way this book ended left a spark to jump into the next one.
I would like to add that I love when Shakespeare's is used in any story, has a metaphor retelling or has a devotion for a hopeless romantic. I loved this and the fact that brought back my hopes for the vampire novels/ series

Interesting and refreshing story wished to review it fully. Thank you for the sneak peek. The world-building was fantastic, I really liked the characters, and think they were well built, this new fantasy story had me hooked from the start, sometimes it felt a bit slow, but was well-paced. The emotions were good and love the descriptions.
I have been waiting for a book like this!! This is everything I've wanted from a paranormal historical fantasy! (starts squealing)
Lush storytelling that combines gothic vibes, romance, and mythology into a vibrant New Orleans setting. You feel as though you are right there in the city of New Orleans. It starts slow but there is something intriguing about it that snags your attention instantly, taking you on an exceptional reading journey
There is a smart, strong, and flawed female lead, followed by an amazing cast of characters. Odette is a legend! The romance is utterly magnetic. Now I'm not normally into vampires (except for the classic Dracula) but dang! Renee has done this so amazingly well that I may be converted. This is how you do vampires!
I seriously cannot wait to continue this phenomenal series!!
Thankyou to Netgalley and Penguin Group for this eARC in exchange for an honest review!
I was given the Sneak Peek to review and the biggest disappointment was that I couldn't finish the story. I was hooked and just when it was getting real interesting...it ended!! I can't wait to pick up the rest of the book and finish this! This was a new author to me and I am looking forward to reading more from her.
If the one thing this sneak peek has done is reaffirm that one, I need to have Renee Ahdieh books on my shelf and two, pick this particular book as soon as humanly possible. Preferably in the physical format!
This is a new author for me and I look forward to reading more from her in the future. This is a great start to a great book that I look forward in reading the rest of the book. It pulled me in from the beginning and has made me want to read the rest of the book and see what happens next. I highly recommend reading this book entirely, I know that I will be.
I absolutely adored this book though it is a bit slow paced. It had me up all night reading and I cannot wait to read the next book!
I desperately want to read more of this book. It’s on BookishFirst, it’s super popular, it’s an ongoing series, etc. I need to take the plunge or whatever the expression is and read the rest!!!
I was curious and wanted to go back and re-read this book after reading a sneak peek of it's sequel. It may be too early to judge, but I believe that I feel the same way about it as I originally did.
First off, I absolutely love the setting. New Orleans is one of my favorite cities and I love how it's depicted in this book. I'm also a sucker (haha, no pun intended) for vampire books, so you may be wondering about my three star review...
My main complaints about this book are that it moves too slow and it's hard to get to know the characters. The characters are fine, my favorite being Odette, but not anything "new" for YA. It also just seems very average - not awful, but not great. I don't think it's the "next great vampire novel," but it's definitely not a bad book and I recommend it if you're a fan of Ahdieh, vampires, New Orleans, or just need a new read for Spooky Season!
I haven’t read a vampire book in like…..forever! So this book really peaked my interest, I’m excited to continue these books. I love Renée’s writing style and I cannot wait to read her other series the wrath and the dawn.
Years ago I read The Wrath and The Dawn by Renée Ahdieh and I loved it! Right Now It is always one of my favorire books ever!
In my opinion, "The Beautiful" is very different, the writing style is slowly but I love the setting, New Orleans is always a good choice. In the first place the plot of this book (vampireeeee) had piqued my interest, but also the mystery!
From what I have read I can say that it had caught my attention, even if I thought I would find something more dynamic and be immediately thrown into the action!
Absolutely loved this book, and cannot wait to read the next. If you need convincing to read, all I need to say is "The Originals". At first I did not know that the book was about vampires in New Orleans, but was thrilled to read it after soon finding out. Although set in New Orleans, I personally imagined the setting of London. The plot and character development was amazing. I could not put the book down, it's one of those books where you simply have to keep reading, until you sadly realise you have finished it. This is one of few novels that provides actual suspence and mystery. I loved Celine and Sebatian. All I can say is banter. I love the banter and chemistry between these characters. There were some scenes throughout from an unknown perspective that you wouldn't think would work, but Renee made it work beautifully. The only criticism I have is that I would have liked a little more background. This is already a new favourite series of mine, and I have already started reading The Damned.
This was so exciting. I haven’t read something like this in so long. I went through this in just hours. It was that good.
Also, can I pls say that this cover is absolutely stunning. Definitely suited.
I love everything Renée Ahdieh and I am so happy to have been given this sneak peak! It was just as good as I expected it to be! Can't wait to get to the rest of the novels!
The Beautiful is an interesting story that takes place in 1872 New Orleans. It is about a young dressmaker named Celine who is running from something in her past in Paris. She seeks refuge in a convent and begins to make a new life for herself. That is until she slowly begins to discover the dark secrets of New Orleans and the mysterious La Cour des Lions when bodies begin to turn up everywhere she goes drained of blood, and she’s the next target. Determined to face this threat so no one else has to die she is forced to fight for her life and make a sacrifice for someone she loves. This story begins as a murder mystery and leaves you wanting to know more. I cannot wait to see what happens next!
I loved the sneak peek! It keeps you totally engaged and makes you wanting more. I cannot wait to know what happens next.
I’ll admit I thought this was the full book and not a sample, which was my mistake. I did borrow the full book from the library and will finish it but this review will only be for the chapters included in the sample.
I love the dark, ominous tone of the book. It’s very appropriate to be reading it just before spooky season is upon us. The book is more atmospheric and slow than what I was expecting, and it’s taking me a bit longer to get through it because of it. I am starting to connect with and like the main character and I find myself quite curious about her backstory.
I would say for the part I’ve read: this book seems to be much more of a mystery story than a vampire story. If you’re looking for a new Twilight, this is probably not it. But you will find lovely writing and a couple different mysteries.
My rating is for the sneak peek section of the book only.
Such an engaging sneak peak of the novel, I’ll have to get my hands on the whole book ASAP! Looking forward to seeing where the book and series progress with The Damned and The Righteous.
I've loved Renée Ahdieh The Wrath and the Dawn duology so much I had to give her other books a go.
Even though I don't usually like vampire books I've got already so engaged in this story only from this sneak peek of The Beautiful, it's actually amazing!
I can't wait to read the rest of the book.
I'm about a million years late to this sneak peek and this series as a whole. I've always been interested in the story, but at the same time I haven't quite gotten up to reading it -- until now! I wasn’t sucked into this story like I had hoped to be. It is intriguing and am looking forward to reading more.... but based on this peek so far, it is not high on my TBR to continue.
