Adorable, beautiful, charming, delightful, engaging, ……… , quirky, rewarding, simply a book you need to get! You will be sure to enjoy repeated reads of this book as you follow Bunny and her brothers along the river as they look for her lost ducky. Meeting and following journeys of different groups each time is so much fun, and you will find unexpected treasures on each page as well. The artwork is so very detailed and amazing as are the various storylines; and how they all come together at the end – perfect!
Disclaimer: I received a digital ARC for this book from NetGalley, and these are my honest opinions.
The journey following the river and waterway begins with Bunny losing her rubber ducky into the flow of the stream from the glacier near their home. She and her brothers hop into their boat to catch up to the toy. Soon they are floating past a pine forest, filled with other animals on picnics, racing motorcycles, kayaking, cycling, hiking, and much more. The river moves past farmland full of cows and horses, then spills into a huge lake where it is still hard to glimpse the toy floating. Look closely! After a glorious waterfall, the scene moves to a medieval town and European castles. Then a factory appears, pumping steam and water. Rain starts and the river slows to explore small islands. Windmills and tulips appear until a harbor is reached with a broad sea. Finally the toy is caught again. But what other stories did you see along the way?
This thoroughly Dutch picture book is a very entertaining seek-and-find book that is complicated and funny. Readers will need to lean in closely and read the book multiple times to follow all of the clever story arcs contained in the book. Nicely, Weightman outlines some of the ones to watch for in introductory pages.
The book does have words, but they are nearly unnecessary as the real star of the book are the incredibly detailed landscapes filled with foxes, rabbits, bears, pigs, and lots of other animals. Throughout the action, there are lovely moments of blissful floating, meeting new people, and a strong sense of a large community together.
An exceptional seek-and-find book with a European flair. Appropriate for ages 4-6.
Just delightful! Bunny Rabbit has lost her favorite toy, Little Duck, and enlists the help of her brothers, Peter and Bob, to help her find it. They sail from their home by a glacial lake through many different landscapes, all the way to the sea in their search, and see many sights on the way. The reader, while following along the Rabbits' journey, are tasked with keeping an eye out not only for Little Duck, but also twelve other characters/sets of characters to see what they are up to, and to answer the questions at the beginning of the book. As with most search-and-find books, the text is light and the focus is on the illustrations, which are wonderful- so much detail to pore over, so many tiny stories going on! I saw a familiar yellow submarine in one spread....
Recommended for pretty much everyone- I'm 52 and had a great time with this book!

Reminiscent of Richard Scarry's illustrations and anthropomorphized animals, crossed with a Where's Waldo/I Spy feel, this story is a cute animal story of lost and found. With tons of details to seek and follow, along with cute little pictorial jokes (my fave is when Little Duck is in the row of swans across one spread). The open ending gives readers a place to use their imagination to think of their own adventures that little duck and Bunny might go on next!
Detailed illustrations and picture clues abound in the search-and-find adventure. Join Bunny and her brothers in a fun-filled journey to recover her beloved Little Duck. A very charming book!
My daughter who is a teacher and I read this together. She loved as much or more than I did. She said it brought back memories of beloved books from her childhood and looks forward to placing in her classroom. All Along The River get hers and mine thumbs up.
Short but sweet! A delightful children’s book with a simple, fun story. Little duck has gone missing and Bunny and her brothers, Peter and Bob jump in their boat and go on a little adventure while on their search. I adored the beautiful illustrations and I can imagine a child poring over them with curiosity, searching for Little Duck. Thank you to Magnus Weightman, Net Galley and Clavis Publishing for and ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is delightful! I wasn't expecting this to be a seek-and-find book. And because of the amazing attention to detail, there are more sights to take in on each read.
Bunny‘s rubber duck has sailed down the river, so Bunny and her two brothers start a pursuit to get her back.
Each page is a new part of the river, and the rubber duck can be found on each one. Even better, the book opens with a page on all the main characters, describing them with one sentence and then giving a hint as to what to watch out for. This keeps children engaged even once they can find the rubber duck in their sleep. A lovely, charming picture book.
The beauty of the cover drew me in. Unfortunately that was the only positive I observed, I'm hoping that this didn't convert well to the Amazon Kindle format, however there a major formatting and grammatical issues.
I honestly didn't make it past the first page after reading the following:
"Marta Mouse and Willy Weasel Celia Swan is looking for a new house for her children. are building a raft."
This book needs editing and/or formatting corrections.
Reminiscent of the children's Golden Book classic "Scuffy the Tugboat", this is a charming, beautifully illustrated, little storybook, (with it's additional seek-and-find activities), that explores the landscape and inhabitants of the entire river system, from the sleepy brook at it's source through raging rapids and cities until it meets the sea.
My kids had great fun spotting the Little Duck on each page!
What a little gem.
This is a book about Bunny Rabbit who lost her rubber duck and going all along the river, different cities, places to chase after her duck.
I would say that this book is perfect for your little ones. I read it from my phone so it is a bit hard to spotted the duck but it was so much fun to try anyway,And not only that, you can also talk a bit about the surroundings as there is a lot to spot and talk about. Those details! Your kids would probably spot more things than just the duck :D
This book would be perfect slow before bed time activity for them. Or anytime really :) It is a simple and cozy book that is illustrated beautifully!
A Wild Duck Chase on the Varied River
This picture book follows the varied path of a river where a girl bunny and her two brothers are in pursuit of their pet named Little Duck who has gotten away from them. The river winds its way through some pretty amazing countryside—from glaciers at the beginning, through forests, by pasturelands, into a lake, and around a village, a factory, and a tulip farm! The siblings even ride down a waterfall. The pages are big and colorful, which is eye-catching. The perspective is like we are hovering above, like a drone almost, and looking down at the scene below. From this perspective, we can see quite far and get a sense of the area around the river. The only thing that I wasn't wild about was the very small font. I'm sure the author and/or illustrator wanted to give as much space as possible to the illustrations. So they definitely short-changed the font and text areas. Other than that, the book is beautiful. There's not really much to the story, of course; it's really all about the lovely illustrations.
An entertaining book about how bunny rabbit and her brothers track down her rubber ducky which fell into the river from the mountains to the sea. The illustrations were great with many minute detailing. It was fun spotting the rubber duck in all the pages.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the eARC
In ‘All along the River’ we follow Bunny as she sets forth on an adventure to search for Little Duck. Throughout the book, the readers are encouraged to find Little Duck. Each spread is beautifully illustrated and I’m sure children will enjoy searching for Little Duck. However, upon reading this, you’ll discover there is much more to it that you’d expect.
‘All Along the River’ is a wonderful book with such a fun concept. The illustration is cute, bright, and engaging. I love how interactive this book is. Not only does this book contain the theme of persistence, this is a book that can be repeatedly picked up but upon each reread, there is something new to discover. For that, this is great for a range of ages.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
What a clever and intricate story this is! It's one of those books that you can read through once for the main text, and then go back through on multiple runs to catch all the subplots being generated through the illustrations. It follows a river from its source through its many different zones of use until it reaches the ocean, all on the pretense that the main characters are chasing a rubber duck that got away from them at the river's headwaters. Then, to add to the mix, there's a page after the main text where you see that the entire river might just have been a science museum exhibit that the main characters were playing on the entire time. Very impressive book!
I just reviewed All Along the River by Magnus Weightman. #AllAlongtheRiver #NetGalley
"Bunny Rabbit has lost her toy duck! So Bunny and her brothers jump in their boat and head down the river in search of Little Duck." And so I thought it's all about this bunny family's story. But am wrong. The book is so fun, with short phrases to read, and a duck to find. THEN, you can go back and follow others' stories that included inside. All my eyes follow except the bunny family and the duck, is the dog that runs. And am so gonna go back and start to check other families' adventure.
5 Stars for All Along the River, a fun search-and-find book for young children.
All Along the River is a delightful mashup of a somewhat Beatrix Potter illustrative style meets a lightweight Where's Waldo, with a storyline something like "Are You My Mother"?
Follow a bunny looking for a toy duck, through fantastical landscapes where all sorts of imagery can be searched and discussed. The illustration is rich and full, yet not so busy that it doesn't have balance and eye flow, nicely done. The text is enough to get a young child looking and looking, and it seems likely that young eyes could stay glued to a single page for quite a while, especially if an adult gave two or three things to find in addition to the main hunt item.
This is the best of making old ideas new again, while joining concepts that perhaps haven't been joined until here.
And that author name, a nom de plume? How fantastic is a name like Magnus Weightman! Haha!
Highly recommended for young ones! This one will be picked up again and again.
This look and find book is wonderfully thorough! I really enjoyed the busy, but beautiful illustrations and the bunny family's quest to find their toy duck. Kids will have a lot of fun looking at all of the small details in these illustrations!
I received an electronic ARC from Clavis Publishing through NetGalley.
A search and find book for elementary readers. Bunny has lost his rubber duck so his brothers and he set off to follow the river and find it.
Don't miss the questions before the title page. Each set of characters is seeking something too. Readers can answer the questions by studying the pages along the river journey.
Detailed illustrations provide hours of fun as young, and not so young, readers study the scenes.
Great book for a trip or other quiet time. Also can be fun to work together to locate all of the details and find the duck on each page spread.
