I really loved this first book in a new to my series and author. I can't wait to read the next one. The characters and location really add to the plot. This book keeps you guessing until the end.
This was a 'second-chance' read as I wasn't enjoying the book at all the first time I started to read it. However, I recently pulled this one off the shelf and loved it.
Ditie is not too sure about the chance to compete in a cooking competition thanks to her friend. However, the chance to cook at a food celebrity's home soon outweighs her concerns. Once the celebrity's husband is murdered, it's up to Ditie and friends to solve the mystery.
It was a nice mystery with lots of twists that kept me reading late into the night.
I had not read the first books in the series, but I found this one to work well as a stand-alone. I'm looking forward to reading the first ones in this series and the next one!
A great story that even comes with recipes . I recommend both the mystery and the recipes though I wish the book was longer
The third book in the Ditie Brown Mystery series by Sarah Osborne is Murder Most Southern. Ditie's best friend, Lurleen, has talked her into taking part in a baking contest hosted by celebrity chef, Savannah. Savannah's husband dies after growing ill at the welcome party and more mysterious events take place at the contest. Ditie and Lurleen soon discover everyone involved has secrets making it hard to know who to trust. I enjoy the southern setting in this book. The slight "dig" about Atlanta not being the south earned a few extra points with me. I enjoy this series, and this book is a nice addition.
I enjoyed this book. I liked the plot and the mystery was satisfying, there were a lot of characters to keep track of and that was a bit confusing. This is the third book in the series and I will gladly read the next one. Overall I found this cozy mystery charming and enjoyable.
Pediatrician Ditie (for Aphrodite) Brown's talent in the kitchen has her friend Lurleen wrangling her a spot on a Southern cooking competition show. While she doesn't expect to win, she's excited to be involved until the husband of the famous chef died at a meet and greet dinner. As the competition progresses, everyone is under suspicion. Full of interesting characters, the mystery is a delight to read. Now I need to go back and read the first two books in the series as I don't want to say goodbye to Ditie and Lureen.
Starting this book was like starting a conversation with old friends. The setting and plot are not new, however, the way the author writes they feel fresh and unique. The mystery leaves you guessing, especially with the plot twist thrown in. A strong addition to an enjoyable series.
Murder Most Southern is the third book in Sarah Osborne’s Ditie Brown Mystery series. The characters are three dimensional and likable, and the storyline is well plotted and complex. There’s no shortage of suspects, twists, and red herrings to keep the reader engaged and guessing.
Mabel Aphrodite Brown, whose nickname is Ditie, is a pediatrician in Atlanta, Georgia, who works at a refugee clinic, as well as being an amateur sleuth. Ditie’s friend, Ellie, was recently murdered and Ditie is in the process of adopting her two children, Lucie, and her younger brother, Jason. Her good friend, Lurleen, watches the children whenever Ditie needs her. Ditie is dating Detective Mason Garrett of the Atlanta Police Department, and Lurleen is dating Mason’s friend and private investigator, Danny. Ditie is a contestant on Savannah Evans’s Southern Comfort Cooking Contest, and since both Ditie and Lurleen would be out of town for a week, Ditie arranged for Grandma Eddie, her brother, Tommy, and his boyfriend, Josh, to look after the children and pets. After Ditie notices Savannah’s husband, Quinn Nelson, is very ill during the welcome party, he’s rushed to the hospital, where he passes away. Quinn was recovering from a second heart attack, but a drug used in cancer treatment was found in his system, and the death is classified as suspicious. Even though she’s grieving, Savannah insists that the baking competition must go on. Ditie is determined to figure out who murdered Quinn Nelson, but things get complicated when no one tells the truth, at least not the full truth, and she uncovers secrets and lies around every corner.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it.
Princess Fuzzypants here: Ditie is back with her boyfriend Mason and best friend and her ex-cop beau and the four of them are in South Carolina. The hostess of a top television foodie show has invited Ditie to compete in a competition for the best Southern cook. Even before they leave Atlanta,, there is a murder and a theft which is why Mason is on the job trying to solve a crime and keep Ditie safe. Between Ditie and Lurleen and the two cops, they are the ideal foursome to solve the mystery. But when another murder follows them, things are getting hot and not just in the kitchen.
There are lots of characters who are not whom they seem to be, including Lurleen, who is clearly shaken to be back in a familiar place. It makes Ditie wonder if Lurleen will ever divulge the truth of her past. But before all of that can happen, they need to put their heads together to figure out who is the murderer. It gets resolved but not before some tense and exciting moments. Like the previous stories, this is a solid cozy with an entertaining plot.
Five purrs and two paws up.
I love this series and I loved this instalment.
It's great to meet again the characters and read about the development in their life. They are well thought and likeable.
The plot is engrossing and enjoyable, the solid mystery kept me guessing till the end that came as a surprise.
It was an entertaining read that I highly recommend.
Many thanks to Kensington Books and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
This is a fun cozy series with a lot of Southern charm . This third in series was as fun to read as the prior in series. Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley for the opportunity.
This was such a fun next in series with the focus on a cooking show. Ditie, Mason, Lurleen and Danny. are back and they are all endearing charcters . When a murder occurs again the entire gang helps finds clues and solve the mystery. Along the way is plenty of Southern charm . I love the receipes included by the author. The sleuth was well crafted with plenty of red herrings. I look forward to the next in series and always enjoy returning to this fun group of charcters. I highly recommend this next in series.
Who doesn't like good Southern food? In this, the third Ditie Brown mystery, Ditie, a pediatrician and amateur sleuth, has been selected as a contestant on Savannah Evan's Southern Comfort Cooking Contest thanks to her friend, Lurleen. When Ditie protests that she has patients to see and can't take time off, Lurleen is not going to take no for an answer. With some vacation time available and the blessing of her boss at the clinic and the kids taken care of, she and Lureen are ready to go. It should be fun, right? Well things change when Savannah's husband dies and Savannah is afraid she might be next. How can Ditie say no to using her sleuthing talent to find the killer? It does get complicated and there were lots of characters to keep straight but the mystery kept me glued to the page to the very end.
Ditie and Lureen are a great team and I enjoyed spending time with them. The recipes included made my mouth water. I can't wait to try my hand at making Momma's Banana pudding and the Gingerbread cake with warm caramel sauce on top.
My thanks to the publisher Lyrical Press and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
Murder Most Southern was a charming read with a fun plot. The downside was that there were perhaps one or two too many characters, which made it a little bit confusing at times.
The third installment of the Ditie Brown Mystery Series, Murder Most Southern, by Sarah Osborne, starts out with Lurleen, Ditie’s best friend, informing Ditie that she is a finalist in a cooking competition put on by famous television chef, Savannah Evans, and will be spending five days in a small town in Georgia. What Ditie doesn’t know, is that Lurleen grew up right around there, and is at first reluctant to accompany Ditie. However, Lurleen gives in, and once they are on their way, both women are excited to be in the competition. Unfortunately, Savannah’s husband is murdered, and then another murder happens during the stay. Savannah is worried about the financial difficulties that will come if she cancels the competition, so pushes to go on with the filming of the contestants.
While Osborne does a nice job of developing the characters, there are way too many. It’s hard to keep them straight, and it really isn’t necessary to fully develop everyone, even when they are very minor characters. The story is quite fun, but there seems to be too much going on and even though there are ups and downs and definitely building suspense, it is hard for readers to focus. Everyone seems to be a suspect. The competition segments are fun, and the recipes that are included at the end are fun, but Ditie’s two signature cookie recipes aren’t included, which is disappointing.
All told, this is a fun series, but it is not fast moving, and some of the characters are so selfish, readers may wish they weren’t there. Everyone loves southern cooking, so the food references are nice. There are lots of cozy culinary mystery series out there, and this isn’t good enough to be in the top echelon. Readers may want to read the series if they run out of everything else.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
I am sorry, but as a very Southern lady, I was disappointed by the main character being from the North, a Yankee in hotlanta is not unusual, but some Southern woman named Lurleen!? Please, talk about stereotyping! I have never in my life met anyone by that name, never! I do realize there are some Jolynn's, plenty of first and second names said together, but I personally have never met any of those either. I have a Southern accent, however, we don't truly care what y'all think about that. I truly was hoping for a real funny Southern Style laughter from this book, along with a mystery, because we do love to gossip about anything that doesn't concern us! We don't gossip about each other, because that's not Christian, but about a murder, we will try to make the person before the DNA comes back!
Have a nice day! Thank you Netgalley!

Murder Most Southern earns 5/5 Recipes for Mayhem...Engaging Fun!
Antebellum mansion, a cooking competition, and murder? Yeah! Sarah Osborne’s third book in the series is well-written, descriptive with lots of great characters, and entertaining with a delightful, southern lady Mabel Aphrodite “Ditie” Brown. Pediatrician by trade, cook by talent, and soon-to-be adoptive mother by passion, Ditie’s BFF Lurleen surprised her with a very early birthday surprise invitation to apply her culinary talents in the Southern Comfort Cooking Contest hosted by her favorite celebrity chef, Savanah Evans. It isn’t all biscuits and gravy when the Savanah’s husband dies under suspicious circumstances. She knows Ditie has had success with mysteries, worries she might be next, and pleads Ditie to stay and investigate...so, the show then goes on. But, production issues, a few more victims, lies, secrets, suspects galore, a few fights, and Wow! reveal. Put your own apron on and try out these easy-to-follow recipes filled with Southern flair: Flourless Chocolate Cake, Momma’s Banana Pudding, Favorite Buttermilk Biscuits, Oven-fried Chicken, Gingerbread (Molasses Cake) and Lemon Ice Cream, and Crockpot Low Country Boil.
Disclosure: I received an ARC from Kensington thru NetGalley. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.
A charming trip to the South. A cooking competition becomes dangerous. Some interesting and delightful characters. Important revelations. An engaging and entertaining series. Clever twists and turns to this whodunit.
Murder Most Southern by Sarah Osborne is the 3rd book in A Ditie Brown Mystery series, and another fun book by this author. Dr. Mabel, Ditie, Brown is a pediatrician, who is adopting two children whos mother died. In this book Ditie is talked into participating in The Great Southern Baking Contest. The contest is being held at celebrity chef Savanah Evans’s antebellum estate in Beaufort, South Carolina. When Savanah's husband is found dead at the welcome party, nothing stops the contest. As body count goes up, Ditie is determined to find the truth. I really enjoyed this book, it was unique, and filled with twists and turns. I found this book a little more serious than most cozy, but very enjoyable. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I recommended this book for mystery lovers.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This was an interesting storyline about a reality cooking show. Throw in a bunch of disgruntled folks who can’t quite seem to tell the truth and you’ve got an entertaining read. I loved the characters in this story. Ditie, Mason, Lurleen and Danny. Wonderful folks. The whole cast of characters were great. It would be fun to hang out in Savannah’s house and be able to explore it. I hope I can meet up with the main characters again. I would love to know what they get into next. You’ll also find some yummy recipes included. I received this book from NetGalley, but my opinion is my own.
Ditie is a pediatrician and is now a mom to her late friend's children. One of the joys in her life is cooking. Her best friend Lureen is always nearby to help.
Lurleen manages to get Ditie a spot to The Great Southern Baking Contest. As the pre-contest welcome party is winding down Ditie sees that Savanah's (host of the show) husband doesn't look well. She recommends he go to the hospital, where he dies the next day.
It's decided to go ahead with the competition. All the contestants are staying at Savanah's mansion. They can each bring one guest so Lurleen is there, too. It's here that Ditie and Lurleen try to find out who killed Savanah's husband, and is still causing havoc.
This is a nice cozy and a fun read. There are some yummy recipes at the end.
