This story is as old as time. How to move forward when love and romance sneaks up on you. I really enjoyed this much more than the previous books by this author, that I found just okay and kind of forgettable. This one was a much more enjoyable read.
A delightful beach read, very enjoyable. Not only was this one summer romance but three. And the setting in Nantucket was beautiful.
Nantucket myst be a magical place. Lisa thinks so ,it’s the place she settles herself and her children into when it becomes clear to her her husband is content to parent from afar. Instead of feeling trapped she builds a life and gives her children the security to seek lives elsewhere. Enjoying the life she has carved out for herself ,real using her talent for putting clients in clothes that not only enhance their appearance but builds on that confidence and finds them returning time and again for her guidance. Her children now adults each finds themselves at turning points which are why they have returned to Nantucket for answers. Lisa too has a question to resolve in the form of Mack a carpenter with more on his mind than her roof. Happy reading
T o be honest, this book was disappointing, I have enjoyed other books by Nancy Thayer but this one just did not meet her normal standards. I felt as though the plot was rushed and the characters were not fully developed.
The story line had potential... a divorced woman and a younger widower find they are attracted to each other and now they have to deal with gossip and family issues and their feelings about the age gap... but I feel the author did not develop this story line well at all. One moment they are barely getting to know each other and the next he wants to be exclusive. By the title I was expecting a story of summer life on the island... what I found was a convoluted family drama.
In spite of my issues with the plot, I did like the descriptions of life on Nantucket and of the scenery the island offers. She made the island come to life through her words.
Not a 5 star book in my opinion but it will not keep me from seeking out other books by this author.
Lisa is a divorced single mom of two with a horrible ex who abandons them. She lives on Nantaucket near her parents and runs a clothing shop. After more than a decade of being alone she starts to date Mack, a local carpenter. He is 10 years younger and she’s obsessed with this fact. I really thought this would be a cute summer read but the writing is so stilted and elementary I just could not read another page. 20% was enough for me.
This book was so good! I always look forward to Nancy Thayer's summer beach read. Unfortunately, I didn't get to read this book on the beach this year but it didn't stop me from enjoying it! The story follows single mom Lisa and her adult children Juliet and Theo. You really get three happy endings in one story. It was a great escape in this time and I really just wanted the book to keep going. Highly recommended!
I enjoyed this book, but I was disappointed that there were several plot lines that were left dangling. It was rather predictable and I thought it wrapped up a little too unrealistically
I love Nancy Thayer! She is the start of beach season! This book overall was a little too sappy for me. but it was nice to see these characters with sad pasts come together and end up happy. As always, i love anything that takes place on Nantucket.
Nancy Thayer has become my "go-t0" for summer beach reads! Girls of Summer is nothing short of summer perfection! I always feel transported when reading Thayer's work, and that is exactly what I needed during this time of shelter in place.
I received an advance copy. All thoughts are my own.
This was a perfect summer read - light, fun, and filled with interesting characters. I loved reading about Nantucket and it made me want to visit all of those places!
I really tried to love the characters in this book. Summer books, set on Nantucket, or in another summery place, right up my alley. And I loved the adorable and beautiful cover to the book. However, the story was a little boring. The writing, in general, felt a bit rudimentary. The dialogue between the characters was abrupt and stilted at times-- and felt very awkward. It was an easy read, but not one that kept me thinking for a long while after. I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley.com and the publisher in trade for my honest review.
Set on the beautiful island of Nantucket, this is a story about finding love, finding love – again, and finding yourself. Sometimes we get in our own way due to the false narrative we create, and this book explores just that. Not my most favorite from this author, but a definite enjoyable read.
I haven't read anything by Nancy Thayer, but I had expected more developed characters. I wish I could have cared for them, but as a "breezy" summer book to read, it was fun.
Really enjoyed this book! Enjoyed the family dynamics and seeing the kids finally grow up some. Always like it when people find love.
This was not my favorite of Nancy Thayer but it was still an enjoyable read.
I wished she had focused on Lisa and Mack's relationship with the kids' relationships as a secondary storyline. I never got a deep connection with any of the characters as I normally do. In fact, I think this storyline could have been a 2 or 3 book series focusing on Lisa and Mack, Theo and Beth, and Ryder and Juliet.
Girls of Summer is a good book for those lazy days at the pool or beach and you want a light read with a happy ending.
I received a complimentary book from the publisher, Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine, through NetGalley. Any and all opinions expressed in the above review are entirely my own.
I wanted to love this book. To me, Nancy Thayer is like your favorite comfort food. You are going to be happy and satisfied after. I made it about half way through. I felt like there was way too much book before the summer the blurb writes about. The backstory is absolutely necessary but I felt it was drawn out. I couldn’t finish. I wanted to love the characters and their stories but I just didn’t connect with them. Looking forward to reading more Nancy this summer in hopes of getting that “comfort food” feeling.
Oh how I love a fabulous summer read by the amazing author Nancy Thayer. This book had everything that you would want in a fun beach read. Thank you Nancy Thayer for writing another amazing book that captures everything one would want in a great summer read..
I have read most of Nancy Thayer’s book, and this one was not up to speed, based on the others. The book was long and very slow-moving and had little or no plot. If you are looking for a slow-moving story about a few peoples’ romances, then this is the book for you. I will admit I had some difficulty getting through it.
Lisa Hawley has a good life. Married young to an international banker, who divorced her when he found someone else who mad a “better wife” for him, Lisa has raised two great children, Juliet and Theo, and owns and runs a clothing boutique on the island. Still, something is missing until she becomes friends with Mack Whitney, a widowed carpenter, who repairs and updates old houses, and who is contracted to work on hers. As their romance begins to develop, Lisa’s two grown children return home, and both have mixed reactions to their mother’s new romance with Mack. In fact, her son Theo is and has been in love with Mack’s daughter Beth since they were in school years ago, and is unsure whether can pursue his romance with Beth in light of their parents’ involvement. Juliet, for her part, meets a young professional who is working furiously to in clean the world’s oceans of the plastics killing sea life, and is unsure whether she is ready for the love of her life. The story revolves around these three romances as they pass a summer on Nantucket, with all its ins and outs and events the location brings.
The story, as I said, was very slow moving. I had difficulty getting into it and staying with it. The characters were okay, but not as developed as they could have been or as interesting. There also was nothing to really hold my interest—no mystery, no impending event or intriguing character. Yes, there were the usual trips to the beach (this in Nantucket, after all), the summer scene with everything that brings in a place like Nantucket, the inevitable storm, etc. However, it was just the regular stuff you find in every book about summer events, scenes, etc. This is a book that will appeal to someone who is looking for an easy-going beach read, but one that you can put down and prick back up easily, without wondering or thinking about it or what comes next. I received this from NetGalley to read and review.
Nothing says summer like a Nancy Thayer novel. I read this in one day and was transported. I enjoyed the connected characters and stories and the setting so much!
Deliciously romantic and heartwarming, this is a book I wanted to climb inside and stay as long as possible. It was a great beach read!
Many thanks to Ballantine Books and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
