This is a classic Nantucket Nancy Thayer read. This book is a quick beach read that has family drama and their three different romances. I enjoyed how Thayer explores different stages of life romances although the ending seemed too abrupt and unrealistic. If you’re looking to escape to Nantucket, grab your margarita and start reading this book today.
Sit back, relax, grab a drink and enjoy this fun summer read by the pool or at the beach. Well written as well.

After her husband leaves her for a much more exciting life, Lisa Hawley raises her children Juliet and Theo on Nantucket, making a life for herself even opening her own boutique. The one thing missing is a man in Lisa's life until she runs into the father of one of Theo's classmates who is also a contractor on the island. When she needs some home repairs, she calls Mack and a relationship blossoms from there. This romance seems to be so timely until both of Lisa's kids come home for the summer, giving her no space or time to be with Mack. Juliet has just been dumped by her boss/boyfriend and is heartbroken. Theo who had gone to college in California in order to become a surfer had been injured while surfing and needs to recover. To further complicate things, Theo and Mack's daughter Beth rekindle their friendship which soon becomes a romance. Juliet also seems to have a relationship in the works with Ryder, whom she met on the ferry coming to Nantucket, though I'd like to see her take that relationship a bit cautiously as he seems to be offering her more than she may be ready to accept.
The ending made me want more, so I am hoping there's a sequel but I don't think that's Nancy Thayer's style.
Girls of Summer was a light, fun, summer read. I really enjoyed the plot line and the characters!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own
Thank you NetGalley, Random House Publishing and Nancy Thayer for gifting me an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!
In the mood of a HAE? How about three? Girls of Summer was the perfect book to slip into my pool bag and read in the sun. I needed a lighter read after taking weeks to finish Outlander and this really cleansed my palate for me. Escaping to nantucket for the day was exactly what I needed. This is my first Nancy Thayer read, but I have a feeling she is going to quickly become a favorite of mine this summer!
Three different women, three different love stories. Girls of Summer is a classic Nancy Thayer read. Light and easy, it is perfect for a distraction this summer.
Set on Nantucket, like many of Nancy’s books, the story follows, Lisa, who married her college sweetheart. While Lisa comes from a more blue collar background, her new husband, Erich, has wealthy parents and is used to running in society circles. Erich travels all the time for work, and eventually, leaves Lisa and the children because he doesn’t think Lisa is accommodating enough to his lifestyle, even though she is doing the hard work of raising her kids alone. Now Lisa’s two kids are grown and living off the island. She realizes her house is falling apart, so she hires a contractor to help her restore it to its former glory. She begins falling for her contractor, and one night when something is about to happen, her adult daughter bursts in. Soon, Lisa’s son is home, too, and everyone has quite the summer of drama and romance.
Would I recommend? This was just a so-so read for me; if you’re heading to the beach and this one is around, I say go for it, but otherwise, I think there are better books out there—like Surfside Sisters by the same author.
I keep reading these books and it seems like they are all the same. They are a little too perfect. Money always show up. The perfect relationship always shows up.
This book was extremely slow to start, and it read as a summary. I struggled through the first 2 chapters and the rest went smoother, but all in all, I don't recommend this book.
It was an easy (after the first few chapters) read, but there are so many books out there, and this read like others I have read before.
A solid summer read - full of Nantucket, family, and relationships. The main character was 10 years older than the man she was dating, which made it interesting and thought provoking. There were several times throughout the book where I was left wanting more. Several characters did things that were really annoying, and situations just seemed to be resolved too quickly. Overall a good beach book, which is just what I was needing right now.
Three HEAs for the price of one! When you pick up a Nancy Thayer book you know you’re in for a charming beach read and this book was no exception. A heartwarming love story times three set in gorgeous Nantucket. Lisa is a hard-working single mom to Juliet and Theo. Now that Juliet and Theo are grown her main focus is work work work. This suits Lisa just fine that is until handsome Mac shows up at her door to fix her roof and eventually her heart. Of course there needs to be some complications thrown in Mac is 10 years younger than Lisa and her kids are convinced for this reason he’s going to break her heart. Also Mac has a daughter Beth who has a history with Lisa‘s son Theo and when Theo comes back to Nantucket... i’m sure you can see where this is going. Of course this is a romance triple bill and Juliet has caught the attention of environmentalist Hastings. While this book was somewhat predictable I really enjoyed every minute I spent with these engaging characters on this enchanting island.
This was definitely the summer of love for this family. Admittedly if this were not fiction I might be inclined to advise these people to spend a little more time together before they jump in feet first, but hey it’s fiction and it’s romance. I truly loved all the characters in the story and all the romances, but my favorites were definitely Lisa and Mac. Lisa was a great relatable character, although occasionally she frustrated me with her insecurities especially when it came to Mac. Her kids could have possibly been a little more supportive at times they did underestimate their mom, but I guess that’s probably not that unusual. Another delightful beach read from this must read author.

*** Big thank you to Random House for my gifted copy of this book. All opinions are my own. ***
Nancy Thayer is such a great author and I love her easy and refreshing books. Girls of Summer is another book to add to the list of her famous beach reads. She captured her characters and personalities spot on and it was intriguing to read what was going to happen next for each of them. The common theme was relationships, and the intricacies that can occur when you are in ones that are not the “norm”, whether that be between lovers, family members, or friends. It was an easy and enjoyable read, and I loved reading about Nantucket and the environmental aspect. Definitely pick this one up.
Note: I received an advanced readers copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
It's summer so time to head to Nantucket for another Nancy Thayer book. During the first part of the book, we learn about Lisa Hawley and her romance and marriage to businessman Erich with whom she has two children Juliet and Theo. Eventually we wind up in present day, with single mom Lisa living full time in Nantucket and her grown children having fled for Boston and California. But summer brings them all back for new business opportunities and new loves. I liked how I got a good sense of life on the island for full-timers and how at least one of the romances developed in reasonable way for a story that takes place over only three months. This is a good one to bring to the beach, or - if you're stuck at your home for stay-in-pace for Covind-19, to read on your front porch and pretend you're at the beach.
Good read by Nancy Thayer! This is a story about Lisa and her life growing up on Nantucket. Gives backstory of how she met her husband and having two kids, Juliet & Theo and their life together. Her divorce from him and how she raised the kids on her own. Then moves to current where she is 56 on her own and kids are working elsewhere. Lisa meets Mack when he comes to work on her house and they begin dating. Juliet & Theo end up coming home for the summer and get involved with other people. Story proceeds with their relationships growing and figuring out what they want to do with their lives.
I was so excited about the idea of this book and was all in for the first few chapters. Then, out of the blue, the perspective started shifting away from the characters I had already become attached to. I am glad that we got to experience all of the different people in the story, but it felt a little disjointed at times and I wasn't sure that I liked any of the kids at all until then last couple of chapters. It was a not at all what I was expecting for a light summer read.
This was a really fun book, set in the beautiful Nantucket. This is the perfect book to read in the summer, by the pool. It's such a charming book.
Girls of Summer is the perfect read if your mind is overwhelmed by the world. The characters, setting, and romance are an ideal way to escape your current life and enjoy a bit of a guilty pleasure.
I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion.
I always love reading this authors books during the summer , Love Nantucket and the promise of summer love. Lisa finds herself in a romance after a decade of being alone , her two children come home as adults and find their own romances as well, while worrying about Lisa. Nantucket has that feel good feel and love that will defy age and overcome any issues when it comes to true love , if its meant to be , its meant to be.
"There are times in our lives when we would simply sink beneath the waves of our sorrows, the tides of our fears, and drown in our own misery, if it weren't for our friends."
Summer on Nantucket is always full of family and Lisa Hawley is living a lonely life, after twenty years of being a divorced, single mom her best friend calls her out, and into making some changes in her life. Her two grown children, Theo and Juliet are in turning points of their lives as well, making them come home to Nantucket after a long time away - what awaits each of them as their lives, will coming home help them overcome each of their pasts?
I really enjoyed the telling of this story with three different sets of people, and how they were related to one another in their personal and professional lives - I found it relatable but different, messy and complicated but perfectly wonderful. Nancy Thayer has been on my list of must read beach queens for awhile, so I was thrilled to receive this title from Netgalley & Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine and be able to read it while we were on a short beach getaway with our little family! 4.5 stars and already anxiously awaiting reading my next Nancy Thayer title!
The characters each had their own issues and endearing characteristics, woven together with their hopes, failures and LOVE, making this title an absolute joy for me to read!
Set in Nantucket, this story follows Lisa as she marries young, divorces and raises her two kids while never focusing on her own love life. That is until her kids are grown, on their own and she meets Mack who is 10 years her junior. Both Lisa and Mack grew up on the island but never really knew each other very well. Lisa’s kids surprisingly come home for the summer leaving it difficult for Lisa to date Mack, especially when his daughter also shows up for the summer. What ensues is a light hearted read about finding love and happiness for the adults and their children.
I really enjoyed this book with its summer theme, well developed characters and a plot that kept my interest. This is my first book by this author but will not be my last.
This book is the perfect summer read - if only we could go to the beach and enjoy the salty air. In spite of being homebound due to COVID, I could pretend. The book allowed me to escape my months at home at travel to another world with #GirlsofSummer. I loved this book. In fact, once I started it, I had a hard time putting it down. I loved the complications with family - and how as much as we love our children, once we have an empty nest, it's hard to give it up. Falling in love is complicated enough, but when you bring in a couple's history, the possibility of becoming step-families, life becomes very complicated. Of course, for a reader, it becomes very entertaining. If you are looking for something fun to read, that won't raise your anxiety level and will let you feel joy for a while, this is your book!
