Great book for vision casting. Bob's voice is always warm, friendly and welcoming and somehow things that are normally harder to hear & digest are easy to receive from Bob's pastoral heart. Every time I read a Bob Goff book I feel like I just sat across the table from him for hours chatting with an old friend. He gives clear examples and vision-casting goals and encourages Believers to go for it. I bought a copy for a friend when I was about halfway through the book itself. I would say that sometimes he's a bit long-winded on certain topics but overall it's a great read with practical & spiritual application.
Thank you NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!
Bob Goff, New York Times bestselling author, adjunct professor at Pepperdine Law School, Honorary Consul for the Republic of Uganda, wrote a new book about doing an inventory of your ambition and then putting into motion a plan to make your dreams come true.
Goff has previously written two wildly popular bestsellers, Love Does and Everybody, Always both of which I devoured. His newest book, "Dream Big" is an action plan of how to move from the couch to living out your greatest dreams. He talks about the need for vetting of your ambitions through God's Word and trusted friends and family members, about overcoming obstacles that stand in the way of you fulfilling your dreams, and finally how to "land the plane," and go for it.
I really enjoyed this book, an adaptation from a seminar he regularly hosts by the same name where he empowers those who attend to take the next steps to finding their purpose and living out their lives to the fullest. This book is a great book to read right before the end of the year when people are given a natural time to reflect and make resolutions about what they will change in the future. This is a fast read that could change your life.
I received this eBook free of charge from Thomas Nelson Books via NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review. I did not receive any fiscal compensation from either company for this review and the opinions expressed herein are entirely my own.
Bob Goff is such a talented storyteller I think it would be impossible for him to write a bad book. I always find myself grabbing a pen to highlight nuggets of advice and find him to be authentic in his allegories. I found it tough to relate to this book during a pandemic, however. I am personally pretty solid on my purpose, where I want my career to go, and how I want to live my life so this advice was a nice reinforcement but not necessarily groundbreaking info. It seems to really have resonated with my younger friends (early 20's) who are really unsure where they want to go in life. I think this would be a solid book to give someone as a graduation gift!
Another excellent book by Bob Goff, although I would rank this one somewhere beneath his previous two offerings. It was almost as if he wrote the book because it was time to write another book. Parts of it felt rushed, incomplete, and scattered. But on the whole, it was very enjoyable indeed.
At first, the book felt a bit too long and I felt like skipping over to the "good parts". However, I am glad I stuck it out - in fact, the author urges readers not to do this! The rest of the book contains excellent, practical advice. Anyone who feels frustrated with life and unable to capitalize on their full potential will love this book! If you want to pivot careers, or just find your calling but are scared of risks, this book is a great find; you will find great actionable advice.
A phenomenal book on not only dreaming, but dreaming big. Inspirational, although I have to admit that the book is big on dreaming and not so much on the process of dreaming and the fight that many of us face in "normal" life or within ourselves to pursue those dreams. He makes it seem like dreaming big is easy and simple if you just do the things he says. It's definitely worth reading, though. He's a great writer and there are some gems within the pages.
Bob Goff has an uncanny ability to speak to anyone. Reading this book as a dreamer, his words made me prepped to add "do-er" to my resume. I appreciated the way he shared his own experiences with trying and failing and trying again. His perspectives are always refreshing, encouraging and inspiring.
Did not complete. A self-help book which may be appropriate for most readers and will surely help a number of people.
Christian Guided Motivational for building towards your dreams.
This is Bob Goff's fifth book to be released to date. I was originally curious about this book as his works had been recommended to me before. There's plenty of short stories to make you think and compare to what you've been doing currently. Goff knows just how to make you laugh and make you teary-eyed. You'll start to look at your own behavior differently. Maybe even wonder when this man has time to relax in between his preaching and Non-Profit work for Children's Rights in Uganda and India.
"Dream Big' is a step-by-step guide to reaching your dreams. Goff even includes a few stories of failures with the successes.
But, I do have to point out that around Chapter 10, the Christian fables really show up strong here. In fact, the story from John 6:9 is either misquoted or being stretched to relate to circumstance. But, as I said in the first sentence, it's fairly faith-based advice which could be a turn-off for some. Otherwise, it's a great piece of Self-Help to refer back to from time to time.
Bob Goff is a great writer and this book is a collection of great snippets of life lived and lessons learned. Each chapter takes a spin on advice to live life to the fullest based on personal dreams and goals. Goff writes, "Know your beliefs. Understand them. Devote yourself to them." The message is to pursue your ambitions; whatever dreams you have in your heart. Mr. Goff sure had a great memory; he has a story for everything!
Bob Goff is one of those authors that helps push you to live the best life that you can. This is the third book I have read by him and I still stand by my first sentence. It’s as if Bob is our own personal cheerleader, but also speaks some truths that maybe we don’t want to hear, but it’s everything that we need. I would highly recommend this book to be read.
Here is what I found most helpful in this wonderful book. In his book Bob asks us to respond to three questions: Who are you? Where are you? What do you want? Great questions to ask ourselves as we begin our journey. We do not need to make it complicated. And we can make it fun. I have also decided that before I move to “what do I want to do”, I need to be honest with “where am I” right now. This is my starting point. This is the harbor from which I will sail. And that is ok. I am now ready to sail my ship. Thanks for this fun and packed with helpful information book! Highly recommend!
I love all Bob Goff books and this one does not disappoint. Bob is always able to get his point across in a caring yet funny way. I love the way it is divided into the seven sections. I recommend if you read this book to use the reflection questions and action items at the end of the book along with each chapter.
Huge fan of Bob Goff and this book didn't disappoint! If you are looking to shake up your life and discover new passions, read this book!
Bob Goff is on a mission to shake people into the version of their lives they dreamt about before someone told them it was impossible or incorrect. He wants people to reconnect with the seat of their passion and their person. He wants them to dream big.
Dream Big is the only book you need to uncover the wild and exciting dream for your life you’ve hidden from yourself–and help you take the steps necessary to achieve it.
Bob Goff is a very gifted story storyteller. In this book, he intertwines his stories with motivation and encouragement to achieve your biggest dreams and aspirations. Along the way, he tells you how he did in his life. There are also questions in the back of the book to help guide your reading, which unfortunately I didn’t discover until the end. I wish I would have caught that (I’m sure he talks about it in the beginning) as I think I would have been able to take more from the practical aspects of the reading. I feel like this book wasn’t quite as applicable to my life as his others, and it took me a while to get through it, but I still love his writing and his stories!
I could not stop highlighting so many things in this book that spoke to me! I really struggle with reading non-fiction so to help I try to toggle between reading and listening! I was truly blessed to have received both a copy of the ebook and the audio version. I followed along with Bob talking and highlighted the ebook. If you have never seen Bob speak or listened to him talking you are in for a treat. He has a way of talking that draws you in and makes you feel you’re listening to a friend. If you are just reading the book you will still get that same impression but there is just something about his way of talking to you.
I received a complimentary copy of this in both book and audio from NetGalley on behalf of the Publisher and was under no obligation to post a favorable review.
Dream Big is more “mature” (for lack of a better word) than Bob’s previous books — less throwing candy at strangers in boats passing by and more “here’s what you should do.” There are great nuggets if you look really hard, but you’ll have to get past an abundance of metaphors. Some make sense while others left me wondering “what exactly is he trying to say?”
I found it frustrating that many of the examples given are from a place of privilege that is not acknowledged but feels assumed of the reader. Example: In the chapter about quitting, Bob says he quits one thing every Thursday. I’ve seen him say this many times in many places, but here again he writes about his weekly practice. Finally, he gives examples of what he quits (how many things can there be, I’ve wondered). One thing listed? His job teaching at a local school. The reason given? “Because it was Thursday.” He quit a job because it was Thursday. What?? Almost every single person I know could not do that and continue to pay their bills. I know that Bob has been generous with his time, energy, words and finances… but way too many examples in this book sound similar to this, coming from a place of privilege and means, assuming the reader can (and should) do the same.
Again -- good nuggets if you look for them. But overall, not a good read.
When the author gives you his cell phone number in the back of all of his books, you can't argue with his authenticity or his motive.
Bob Goff wants us to dream big - To give our gifts to the world and to serve in our highest capacity! This is (unapologetically) a Christian book and the reader will get the most out of it it their beliefs are aligned.
Bob's stories provide really clear examples of the points he makes in each chapter. I think story telling (in addition to his huge heart) is his super power. I enjoyed this book. No new ideas but new ways to see my own thinking about dreaming big.

There is no doubt that Bob Goff is a great storyteller! Who wouldn't want to spend an afternoon with him? He does such a great job of relating his personal life experiences/interactions with others to the life application he's teaching.
However, there's something about his writing style that starts getting really flat for me. This is the second book I've read of his and about halfway through each one, I just started losing interest. It took me a couple months to get through this.
I know people love Goff and I get it. I think I'd just rather listen to him speak than read another one of his books.
I fall into the category of people who don’t dream much. Is that even a category? Sure, I have dreams when I sleep at night, and one or two things in my life I’d like to do one day, but big dreams? The kind that changes the world (or even my world)? Not so much. Perhaps my propensity towards perfectionism plays a part in not dreaming big. If I don’t dream big, I can’t fail.
But I love Bob Goff’s books, so I read Dream Big. As always, Goff’s masterful storytelling draws readers in and plants a longing for whatever he wants us to do (make love an action, love everyone, and now, dream big). When I finished the stories, I realized I hadn’t finished the book. This one has a long appendix with activities for helping the reader discover his or her dreams.
I haven’t done my homework yet, though. That will take quiet contemplation and maybe a weekend away by myself to really think and pray about dreaming big. Until then, I’ll keep my mind open and continue to ask God to reveal his dreams for me TO me.
