I love Bob Goff! He has come to our church numerous times and is always good for a laugh. This was a great book! Although I don't think it matters what Bob writes about, you can always hear his humor in the books. I highly recommend any book by Bob.
Goff is one of my favorite authors and I was excited to be able to read this book--although it was shorter than his other books.
What dreams did you have that you put aside? What's holding you back from trying again? Goff uses his trademark casual, friendly tone throughout the book, urging the reader to remember those things they've always wanted to accomplish, then urges them forward.
As usual, this book was uplifting and encouraging!
I was an early reader, thanks to #NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Publishers.
I received an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review. This is the first book I have read by Bob Goff and I wanted to read the book because I like to see what others see. In this book, I discovered you should have dreams and you should no what you want. That is not me but I read the book and decided to start deciding what I wanted and have a dream to have it come true. The book is helping me do this. The other thing about this book is I went into reading it with the idea it was just a self-help book but as soon as I started reading it, I laughed and told myself that I needed to take it more serious but as I kept reading and learning his journey, there were parts of the book that was really funny.
The book kept me reading and it was the story of his journey. I really enjoyed reading it and also liked the many things I learned. I will continue to practice what I learned but I have discovered in my life, that you read a book and you see what applies to your life now but when I read the same book further along in my journey, I can see and understand new things so I am sure this is a book to keep and keep on learning new things as my journey continues.
Another amazing book by Bob Goff. He is a man full of wisdom, encouragement, and funny stories. I love all of his books because he is relatable and he practices what he speaks. He lives life to the fullest and loves even more! I hope that this book encourages everyone that there dreams are worthy and they can follow them!
The subtitle of Dream Big is “Know What You Want, Why You Want It, and What You’re Going to Do About It. Seems a bit overwhelming, doesn’t it? Well it turns out that the author, Bob Goff, is “a lover of balloons, cake pops, and helping people pursue their big dreams” (that’s what his Amazon bio says.) I will listen to anyone who loves cake pops and it turns out that the author and his book were even better than all the treats he loves.
I will be rereading the book again, very soon. I read it quickly the first time- because his anecdotes are so funny, and comforting and they got my brain to thinking and reconsidering. I couldn’t wait to get to the next story, so I do need to spend more time with the nuts and bolts of the book. And I promise I will dive in to the Reflection Questions and Action Ideas too, which are almost like another book- loaded with more good info. Yes, this is an entertaining and relatable book that really helped me because I usually find self-help books hard to understand.
The big idea here is how to determine and then achieve your ambitions, big or small. I highlighted so many parts of the book. What really resonated with me on my first read is the idea of being available to people, all the time. That idea had all ready been tickling in my brain, so I am now even more open. Stop by! Here’s another idea- how about quitting something every Thursday? That’s easy to understand, isn’t it? You can quit a task, chore, habit, anything that’s taking up space in the junk drawer of your brain.
This is currently my favorite idea from the book- We shouldn’t be like a baseball umpire. No need to call balls and strikes on each other. Rather, we should be a base coach waving people on as they hustle and round the bases to home. (I hope you remember baseball…)
Enjoy this inspiring, informative and positive book. I received an advance review copy from NetGalley and Nelson Book. This is my honest review.
I read Goff’s first book and liked it but found it too full of platitudes that tended to make me roll my eyes a bit. (Sorry!) this one started out that way and I recognize that he has had a very privileged life and I’m sure many of his readers have as well. So because of this, I tend to have to approach books like this differently. I’m the first in my family to attend college but couldn’t afford graduate school so kind of floundering. I did enjoy this book much more than his previous as it did have the actionable items/steps mixed in with his life stories and the platitudes. Would be a great graduation gift, especially in the current climate!
There isn’t a book that Bob Goff has written that hasn’t touched me or taught me something. I highly recommend this book to everyone. If you haven’t read one of his yet then start here.
Thanks to net galley for the advanced copy and to the publisher.
I've read a lot of self-help and this is well written. There are already +100 helpful reviews and likely to be many more so I'll just say that many readers will resonate with this content.
Thanks for the review copy!!
Definitely read Dream Big by Bob Goff with a pen in your hand; you will want to highlight, take note, and memorize some of the important lessons Goff teaches his readers. Better yet, buy a digital version so you can see your notes on your eReader.
Here's the thing: I am a BIG fan of Bob Goff's writing and feel that each of his books have found me at a pivotal point in my life and has opened important doors to reflection. Dream Big takes everything that I love from Love Does and Everybody, Always and places it into the context of achieving goals and resolutions that readers may have closed the door to and helps readers to unlock the creative potential to achieve what truly needs accomplishing in their life.
Here's what makes Goff's books stand out in the pack-shelved section of self-help books:
-Goff realizes that there is value to anecdotal examples he derives from his life as well as the lives of others.
-Goff never settles for mediocre when it comes to success-- I often stopped to evaluate my own ideas and found that once I had settled, Goff writes in encouragement to keep dreaming.
-Goff loves people and is willing to help. His personal cellphone number is in the back of the book!
-Goff feels like a friend more than a mentor-- it is apparent that he wants to help and is willing to put in the time to get to know his readers.
-Goff doesn't expect you to spend more money on additional products. Trust me on this and subscribe to his Instagram account. Goff workshops with his reader at the back of this book. All anyone needs is a place to write down their ideas.
Like his other entries, Goff does not shy away from using the Bible to explain and relate his ideas to his readers. However, I really feel that anyone could find an element of growth-- even those who shy away from religious texts in favor of secular texts. Bob Goff loves people and that love transcends his texts in a way that is hard to imitate without true feelings of hope and respect.
However, if you are someone who enjoys religious connections, you will find Goff's work inspiring and perhaps supplemental to your faith. He relates Biblical stories in a way that enhances his lessons and brings contemporary connections.
My only fault with this book is a personal one when Goff takes a low blow at English majors that simply didn't sit right with me:
"If your ambition is to write a book, find an English major at a local university to help you-- they'll never get a job anyway."
As someone who studied English and has a great job, I was a bit hurt by this sentiment. For me, it damaged my trust in his advice just a bit with the ol' English majors will never amount to anything joke. Like many stereotypes, this one is hard to shake. I guess I will take Goff's advice:
"Don't be so eager to correct people; welcome them instead. Accept them. Love them without any angle or agenda. Start with yourself."
I could go on and on about my love for this book, but I will take a step back and encourage readers to experience Bob Goff and take in what they may need from his encouraging life stories and lessons. Dream Big will be purchased and placed in my permanent collection.
My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
Thank you to NetGalley and Nelson books for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review!
Bob Goff does it again. Who are you, where are you and what do you want? Through those three questions, Bob helps us discover the big dreams inside of us and take the steps towards making those our reality. My favorite part about the book is that it isn't promoting dreaming big for the sake of simply accomplishing more, but rather it encourages us to chase after our big God-given dreams to live a life that is full of growth and impact instead of living in fear of failure. Reading this book, it feels like you have a friend alongside you encouraging you to go for it. I'd recommend this to anyone. Thank you to NetGalley and Nelson Books for providing an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is a departure from the Bob Goff regular that I’ve come to love. Still witty and kind and uplifting, in the ever present Goff sort of way. But it reads much more like a speech or a sermon than a story. This book absolutely serves a purpose and if you’re looking for “life lessons” then you will probably really enjoy it. But, if you’re hoping for outlandish stories that cut to the heart, this book may not be for you.
DREAM BIG
Bob Goff
I received this book on Kindle for the purpose of review from #NetGalley. While the book was interesting as to dreaming and fulfilling your dream, I couldn't necessarily related due to my circumstances and life today.
He outlines why you want to dream and how your passion plays into your dream. He gives many examples and challenges you to get out of yourself. He definitely is a cup half full rather than half empty kind of guy.
I will say I was deeply encouraged as I read some of the stories he shared. For a young adult or even a couple starting out in business it is worth the read.
Best selling author Bob Goff's new book, Dream Big: Know What You Want, Why You Want It, and What You're Going to Do About It, is an inspirational, self-help title that new graduates can learn from. If you're contemplating a career or goal change for any reason, you will also find insights and motivational ideas to show you the way.
Goff shares stories from his own life and faith, and from the experiences of others who learned how to carve paths to their dreams. Give it a read, get off the sidelines and make a start toward whatever you want to accomplish.
I adore Bob Goff and putting Bob's perspective on accomplishing big dreams is quite possibly the best way to go. I am going to read everything the man writes and this is one that I am for sure pressing into my fellow business owner and my friends' hands.
Dreaming is not something I am particularly good at. My life and experiences have brought me to a place where I thrive by being in the present moment, and it's hard for me to miss that to think about what might be coming next. I wondered if this book would unlock some deeper passion in me or would point me toward a future I hadn't even imagined; I wondered if it would be a spark for my dreaming. But it wasn't. What it was, however, was an affirmation of the hard choices I have already made about how to engage my life to its fullest. Rather than inspiration, I found on its pages a measured, though excited, voice that somehow made possible the life I'm already trying to live and made it okay for me to want that. That doesn't mean I don't have hope for the future or a long-term view of eternity; it just means that my feet are already dirty enough for this particular journey, and there is a great, big fullness of God right here for me - until and unless He changes that.
In a world where every voice seems to be saying that you're always supposed to be dreaming, always supposed to be wanting something bigger for yourself, it's refreshing that a book about dreaming is so positive toward also simply embracing something that's already the essence of who you are. Bob and I share a lot of similar ideas about how to love our neighbor, about how to engage with joy, about how to free ourselves and go for it, even when 'it' seems a little crazy (or a lot), and I loved seeing that work on the pages of these stories, as well.
And what I also found was the some of Bob's dreaming, maybe even all of it, wasn't big enough to comprehend how things actually turned out. I get the sense that he couldn't have imagined how big some of his small ideas would grow to be. And it's made me wonder about all the small things I'm holding onto for myself, how much bigger than my comprehension they might actually become...or maybe already be, I don't know. I'm already seeing the impact of some of the choices I've made, and I'm understanding that living big sometimes comes from staying small. Perhaps I'm more of a dreamer than I realized.
Bob Goff is a tremendously influential person and is a captivating writer. I will be honest, although I fully enjoyed this book, it doesn’t quite live up to his previous books 'Love Does' and 'Everybody, Always'. I also am reading his yearly devotional 'Live in Grace, Walk in Love'. Many of his stories in 'Dream Big' are ones I had already read in his previous books (especially his devotional), so it felt a little repetitive to me. Even so, I was captured by his writing and if you are someone out there who has been sitting or waiting on a life dream, you should definitely read this book. He is an inspiring, humble person doing big things to change the world.
I was chosen as a member of Bob Goff’s launch team and received an ARC through Netgalley.
Do you know who you are, what you want and why you want it? These are three questions I’ve been exploring about myself after being selected to join the launch team for Bob Goff’s new book, Dream Big.
It’s the kind of conversation I tend to put off having with myself until I feel like the time is right. But when something disrupts my routine like this pandemic has, I’m more inclined to reflect and adjust my focus.
Reading Dream Big made me feel like I wasn’t just daydreaming about what my life could look like in the future. It felt like I was sitting around having a deep conversation with an old friend about my childhood dreams, what held me back from going after them and what I still want to pursue. But instead of just leaving me with the warm and fuzzy feeling of a good conversation, I left with a clear list of my ambitions and action ideas for how to pursue my biggest dreams.
It can be difficult to take an honest look at who we are, where we are and what we want, but as Bob describes it, “Here’s what makes it worth it: when we sort through all the words written by ourselves and others, and when we discard what isn’t true or doesn’t matter anymore, we’ll find the clarity we need to choose the desires that are worth pursuing. What’s left over will be your truest, most beautiful, and lasting ambitions.”
As he pulls you into this soul-searching conversation in Dream Big, Bob weaves his own personal anecdotes together with stories of friends he’s met throughout his life to present interesting and insightful life lessons that inspire the reader to leave behind limiting beliefs and distractions to boldly pursue meaningful ambitions.
Concluding with a generous section of reflection questions and action ideas for uncovering and taking steps toward your biggest dreams, Dream Big provides a practical launching point for wholehearted pursuit of your most fulfilling ambitions.
The questions and action ideas come from Bob’s Dream Big Framework, a 2-day workshop that has helped thousands of people define and accomplish their dreams.
An expert in dreaming big and making bold life changes, Bob quit his own law firm after 25 years of practicing law. In 2003, he founded a nonprofit human rights organization serving children in conflict zones. The organization is known today as Love Does. Bob’s 2012 book by the same name is a New York Times bestseller.
Do you want to dream big dreams and get serious about pursuing your most worthwhile ambitions? Get a copy of Dream Big and let Bob lead you into an honest conversation with yourself that gives you the push you need to get started.
“Let’s stop deferring, ignoring, and screwing around, distracting ourselves with things that won’t really matter next week, much less in our next life. Let’s instead throw our efforts and emotional weight into those ambitions which will outlast us and leave all the rest behind.” - Bob Goff, Dream Big
I liked this one because it read like a collection of pieces of advice from a father or grandfather. The tone is friendly, like a pep talk from someone who really believes you're the guy for the job, namely to work on your own ambition(s).
Although the book is structured into seven main parts each with a stated idea and its own chapters, I found the book to be somewhat disjointed. I don't know if this is because I read it framentarily, or because, repeatedly, the final point of each part was to focus on your ambition. Do you know those quotes that aim to lift you up and encourage you to get things done? This read like that, and this is the overall tone.
The structure is like this: there's a story and then it transitions into telling the reader how this applies to our lives and ambitions. I loved all those stories and how they did actually drive home the point he was trying to make. However, make sure you get the idea of the stories, because I am sure not many will recognize themselves in the stories of building schools in war-ridden countries, making a bid for a town (!), setting up a flying company, or some other crazy and cool ideas.
For those who've read and enjoyed Bob Goff's previous books this might be something they're interested in. I liked Love Does and Dream Big better, the latter being more mature, less fluff, and actual sound, practical ways to get things moving towards your most desired ambition. In typical Goff way, there's the constant reminder to pay attention to the people around you, to surround yourself with the right people, and to love people.
Read it like a gentle nudge to move forward with your more or less wild ambitions that take up the most space in your head and heart.
What a great quarantine read! Now is the time to harness all of the energy spent THINKING about pursuing dreams and turn that into ACTIONS. Having read all of Bob Goff's other books, I loved exploring the idea of "Dreaming Big" through his lens on faith and humanity. This book is a combination of Goff's sweet story-telling and a call to action. Just as with his other books, I felt motivated to improve my life and dig deeper into my faith without it feeling like a typical cheesy how-to book. I always am left feeling like Bob is my encouraging buddy after reading a book of his, and this one is no different! 10/10 recommend! Thank you to NetGalley and Nelson Books for a copy of this book for an honest review.

Thumbs Up:
-Lots of whimsical stories about Bob’s life
-Practical reflections and questions to go along with the content of the book.
•
👎🏻Thumbs Down:
Having read Bob’s other books, this one seemed a little repetitive to me with just a different spin on the “life lessons”.
•
🤓For readers WHO:
-Enjoy Christian life books
-Are fans of Bob Goff
-Want practical tips and motivation to go after your ambitions
•
👉🏼This is what’s WHAT:
This book takes after Bob’s Dream Big conference and gives you a formula for how to make your ambitions happen while felling funny stories along the way.
•
⏳WHEN I read this book:
A new word came to mind: Whimsy. There’s no better way to describe this author.
•
🚨WHERE you should watch out:
No worries here.
•
📍WHY you shouldn’t read this one:
If I were to recommend a Bob Goff book to you, it wouldn’t be this one, I hate to say. I find his books on how to love others more compelling than this one on going after your dreams. Personally I feel the “dream big” mindset to be redundant in Christian books lately.
