Enjoyed Austin, April, and Quinn's story, it was HOT! Had some tear jerker moments and lots of sex. I enjoyed watching April and Quinn reunite and build their relationship again, with Austin included in the mix.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Opal Carew’s Stroke of Luck opens with April finding herself in bed with two men, neither of which were the fiancé she was scheduled to marry. Quinn and Austin enjoy pleasing April to no end, but there’s a catch, they’ll only do so for a month. Of course during this time, feelings between the three develop and love blossoms.
I really enjoyed parts of the book (very steamy romance) but was wishing for a bit more drama in between the love scenes just for a bit more plot development.
April has found herself in a precarious situation. Her fiancee has left her with nothing but a debt that she cannot pay. As chance would have it, a man from her past appears when there seems to be no reasonable hope. The couple makes a deal, and Quinn asks April to rekindle their past romance for the month of his Las Vegas vacation. The catch is that Quinn's business partner Austin will share in their relationship.
Stroke of Luck is a steamy romance fantasy I was granted a copy of from Netgalley and St. Martin's Griffin. April is reticent in the beginning about revealing her attraction to Austin, but soon enjoys the touch of the two attractive men. Quinn embarks on the relationship as a sort of revenge for past slights but realizes what April truly means to him. This story is very passionate and very adult. I suggest only those looking for a highly sensual romance venture here. Stroke of Luck is a quick read. April, Quinn, and Austin fit nicely into their roles and are likable enough. With this story, one gets what one would expect, and that is certainly enough.
I really enjoy second chance romances. This book had that and new love! Yes this is a menage romance book. The story line and writing were very well done. It was definitely beyond sexy, but still had enough of a story to keep the reader interested and involved.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book provided by NetGalley.
New to this author and happy to say that I have another author to follow and a ton more books in my TBR section because I plan to read all the books by this author.
The book starts off immediately and grabs your attention. Loved the characters , funny and well developed. The book was a balance of hot/steamy and fun. Loved it. Can’t say enough good about it to be honest. Lots of twists that keeps you hooked. I read this in one day it was so good.
A very hot and steamy story. If you like reading this genre then I recommend it. Great characters and a good storyline.
Thanks to St. Martin's Press & NetGalley for the opportunity to read an early copy in which I give my honest opinion.
Opal Carew’s latest, Stroke of Luck, is, as expected, a scorching erotic romance that finds a beautiful young woman stuck in Vegas and in the arms of two men after her luck’s run out.
After the rehearsal dinner for their wedding, April walks in on Maurice with another woman and calls off their marriage. In a fit of revenge, Maurice stiffs her on the hotel bill and strips her of everything she owns, from her townhouse, whose mortgage is handled by one of Maurice’s banks, right down to the clothes on her back, which he paid for. Just as she’s about to be thrown out of the swanky, high-price Las Vegas hotel where she was to be married, a chance meeting with her college flame, Quinn, saves the day. Quinn, now a billionaire, can’t stand to see her suffer, settles her debts, and lets the now-homeless and destitute bride-to-be stay in his executive suite with him and his friend and business partner, Austin. April hates being in Quinn’s debt and vows to work off what she owes with an interesting proposition. She will give herself to him, no strings attached. Quinn accepts the offer with a slight modification - he wants to share her with Austin, as well. A deal is made and sealed with a heated blow job. April never suspected she’d end up married to both of them, though!
Stroke of Luck has a paper-thin porno plot, existing largely as a pretense to get the sexy times rolling. And Carew does a marvelous job indeed of giving readers more bang for their buck with a number of erotic encounters chapter after chapter. Once April and the guys settle into their newfound relationship, the three can’t keep their hands off each other (although no swords cross in this one), and the book becomes a fairly prolonged fuckfest as Quinn and Austin swap in and out to pleasure April morning, noon, and night. The sex scenes themselves are hot and heavy, with a late-game swimming pool encounter among the most heated, but despite being an incredible turn on, they lack variety.
I kept hoping for some extra heat and experimentation between this threesome, but Carew never goes quite far enough to truly satisfy and leaves much of the possibilities of a ménage left unexplored until very, very late in the book. The erotic elements get a bit staid with April merely being passed between the two men, with Quinn fucking her while Austin watches or, as Quinn absolutely loves, watching her get fucked by Austin. I was disappointed the three never partook in one another simultaneously for the majority of the book, and given the MFM scenario here, there could, and should, have been some spicier scenes of threesome lovemaking.
That said, the sex scenes that are present are more than enough to get the blood flowing, and Stroke of Luck makes for one arousing read even if it is, on the whole, pretty damn vanilla. Carew drafts some exceedingly hot and passionate couplings, and her depictions of oral sex and various positions make for some truly stimulating mental imagery. Less stimulating, though, is the emotional back and forth as Quinn tries to square away his love for April with his concerns that she’s only after him for his money, why she broke up with him in college and why she’s back in his life now. These mental struggles and the emotional complications that go along with a recently jilted bride-to-be entering into a threesome are simply too repetitive to be interesting, but thankfully Carew keeps the psychological explorations short, shoehorning them in between all the copious sexy times.
Stroke of Luck might have worked better as a novella, like her similarly themed MFM title Drilled, but the pages turn easy enough, and if you’re reading on a Kindle, you only need one hand to tap your way to the next arousing scene with Quinn, April, and Austin.
April Smith was supposed to get married this morning, until she found her husband having a little pre-wedding fun with another woman last night! Now, she's been kicked out of the wedding suite, has hotel mgmt. going through her suitcases to find everything her fiance has ever paid for and, is told she also owes for the use of the suite. When Quinn Cummings, her first love, sees her, he offers to help, then takes her to his and his best friend's suite to keep her away from her former fiance's friends and family.
Quinn has always believed that April dumped him because her new boyfriend had more money than he did. Now, with the tables turned, he still doesn't trust her but, realizes that he has never stopped loving her. He makes a deal with April that she can pay him back by staying with him and his friend Austin for a month as a "friend with benefits."
April realizes that she has never stopped loving Quinn and, now has feelings for Austin. She can't stay though, because she knows Quinn still doesn't trust her.
This is a Steamy Hot story that has driven character development done so very well that you don't want to see it end!
This was a book I really loved reading. The plot / storyline was really good.
Riana and Quinn have great chemistry and when he comes to Riana's rescue and offers Rianna a place to stay things really start to heat up. I love books with “arrangements” and this book delivered.
I’d highly recommend this book as it’s wonderfully written, full of passion and romance, and a must read love story.
Stroke Of Luck had me hooked from page one.
literally devoured this book in one sitting.
Could not put it down.
I need more books from Opal Carew now
Stroke of Luck by Opal Carew. I haven't read this author's book in the past I believe. A very spicy romance that was fast paced and I couldn't put down. I look forward to checking out more books by author.
I had to stop reading this because of the backstory leading up to the threesome. It was quite unbelievable and ridiculous.
I want to thank NetGalley for allowing me to have access to this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This story is about April being abandoned the day of her wedding after having caught her fiancé cheating on her. He leaves her with nothing but the responsibility of footing the hefty bill of their wedding and their hotel room. It is then she comes across her first love for the first time in years and he helps her pay for everything. Not wanting to be in his debt she proposes being in a sexual relationship with him to repay him which he accepts with the added agreement that his business partner partake in the relationship as well. Through this relationship he comes to realize that feelings once deemed long forgotten still simmer familiarly in his heart, assumptions once made are proven wrong, and he comes to realize he never truly knew this woman he had once considered the love of his life.
There was a lot to be desired all in all: the formatting was in complete disarray and there wasn't a clear distinction of whose point of view was being narrated at every point of the story. Character didn't feel completely fleshed out and like we were getting choppy explanations of each one that didn't really allow for you to get a clear understanding for their actions and reasonings. Relationship development was severely lacking in that you couldn't get a clear read as to why Quinn decided on including Austin in his sexual relationship with April, or how April came to love either Quinn or Austin. Hints of this development were given but never fully showcased enough for the ending to be impactful.
Now, as this is an erotica, I would have expected there to be a lot of spicy scenes that would evolve throughout the story the more the become used to their threesome and the more comfortable each person got to having an extra participants in their sexual moments, but I ultimately felt like the sex was completely lacking and could have been a little more varied.
I feel like what I got in this novella was the bare bones of an amazing story. There was amazing peeks into great moments of character development, and healthy conversations about boundaries and set expectations in a relationship and changing that as one's feeling develop, and how relationships can be misconstrued but ultimately set right with the use of open communication. I feel like the narrating voice was completely at fault in this in that it was very choppy and out-of-sync with the tone of this story- like it wanted to be open about their lesson's but fell short in words to really make the story flow how it could.
All in all I feel like this was underdeveloped but that it has great potential to be something great and extremely sexy.
April dumps her cheating fiancé the day before their wedding, and gets stuck with an enormous Vegas hotel bill she can’t possibly pay. She runs into her college ex, Quinn, who’s never really gotten over her. He takes pity on her and brings her up to the penthouse suite he shares with his friend and business partner, Austin. Both men are intrigued by April, but don’t want to ruin their friendship. April makes Quinn an indecent proposal to pay off her debt.
An interesting premise is drowned by sloppy writing. Perspective shifts occur in the middle of pages without a break. Often the author refers to “he” when it’s not clear which man she means. And the fact that April’s ex was seriously controlling and emotionally abusive is barely discussed. People just keep throwing money at problems, and it works. Hopefully some of this is fixed in the final printed version.
There was a lot of hot sex, so if that’s all you’re after, give this a try.
Thanks to Netgalley, the publisher, and the author for the ARC to review.
I received a complimentary copy of Stroke of Luck. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
If you are looking for believable, this is not the book for you. This book was fun and frivolous even though there was an attempt to make it serious and believable at some points. If you just want a fun read, this might work--if you just skim over the more serious parts. It was a weird mix of both ends of the spectrum: too much fun and pretty serious (and a lot of repeated phrasing, which detracted from the fun parts greatly).
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.
Stroke of Luck is erotica to its core. With a porn worthy plot, Opal Carew will have you along for the ride in no time. It's thick and hard with naughty times. However, the shallow thrusts are just for foreplay. There's no depth of character or any real connection for the reader to bind with the characters. This is definitely a read for a quick "solo" mission. I am usually a big fan of MFM but this one just didn't do it for me.
Readers may enjoy the just desserts though. Nothing like a revenge... or should I say get over him romp?!
Unfortunately, this story did not draw me in like others from Opal Carew. While the premise was amusing and, of course, hot, it was somewhat choppy to follow. Within the same paragraph, for example, the story would quickly move ahead, seemingly skipping a natural transition into the next story development. It was almost as if there were gaps in time between when one sentence was written and the next.
Perhaps the reviewing copy was an unedited version? Unfortunately, this issue was a little too distracting as a reader...
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
Whew, can you say HOT? Wow what a great read, just when everything goes bad on your wedding day when you find your fiancé with someone else, life just takes a turn for the better....... fun fast read with great characters ....
Stroke Of Luck is a steamy, melt your e-reader, contemporary romance by Opal Carew. This is a M/F/M menage story, so it may not be for everyone. Ms. Carew has provided readers with a well-written book with a stellar cast of characters. April was dumped the day before her wedding, left with the hotel bill and her credit card canceled. To add insult to injury, the hotel even had directions from her runaway groom to take her clothes and jewelry since he paid for them. When Quinn came across he ex from college being tossed from her hotel suite he had to step in. He made a deal with April that included his best friend Austin. Quinn, April and Austin's story is 5 alarm fire hot and loaded with drama and humor. I enjoyed reading Stroke Of Luck and look forward to reading more from Opal Carew in the future. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Not my cup of tea. Some may like it. Thought I'd go for something different and it was. I can't believe two guys would like sharing their wife so much and that she is so skilled in bed having only had one previous lover. ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for a fair review.
