Stroke of Luck is a great way to spend a lazy afternoon. I picked this book from the list because I needed a light read that would take me away for a while and Opal Carew did not disappoint. Quinn & Riana set the pages on fire with their chemistry and I loved that I could just let go and enjoy the story.
This was a quick read that actually surprised me. I didn't expect for there to actually be tender feelings between the characters, but there was. Not my usual read, but an entertaining story.
This was a quick, fun read. The story is fast paced and definitely all about the fantasy, if you stop and think too much about the characters or the plot it's obviously over the top, but that's kind of the point, it's absolute fantasy, a couple hours of indulging in a guilty pleasure, and for that it absolutely fits the bill.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I found this book very hard to get through as there wasn't much of a plot. April's fiance leaves her with a huge bill when he dumps her after she catches him with another woman the night before their wedding. An old boyfriend of hers and his business partner happen to be staying at the same hotel and pick up the tab even though he has been angry with her for years. To repay him she offers an arrangement that includes both men. Ok if you just want to read erotica but not much of a story.
Stroke of Luck is the first book by Opal Carew that I have read, but it probably won't be the last. I made the mistake of starting this book at 1 AM and as a result, I didn't get to sleep until after 4:30 in the morning when I forced myself to put the book down. All three of the main characters were great, although I did prefer Austin over Quinn slightly.
The only thing that really bugged me about the book was that swords didn't cross. I absolutely believe that the men should have been involved as well and there were plenty of opportunities for them to realize that they had feelings for each other as well.
Thank you so much for the copy of Stroke of Luck. I tried to pick this one up a few times, but I was not able to connect with the story line and characters. Unfortunately, it did not work for me. Thank you again for the opportunity to read this one.
I will not be sharing my thoughts/reviews outside of Netgalley in a review
Very sexy and surprisingly sweet. A wonderful tale of rekindled romance with the fire of new passion. All three are such well written characters with lots of heart,
This review is not going to be long. I am not a huge fan of a review rehashing the entire plot and spoiling it for everyone.
This is the first book of Opal Carew that I have read. I enjoyed it! Hot, Hot, I liked the chemistry of the main characters. I will read more of her books.
I received an ARC of this book to read through NetGalley in exchange for a fair review. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Totally not what I was expecting. An interesting take on this trope. Started off a little slow, but really heated up. #netgalley
The steam and sexiness of this book was amazing, but I extremely underwhelmed by the story.
There was so much happening with the original fiancé. He cheated, canceled her credit cards, had her fired, left her with a hotel bill she couldn’t pay , took ownership of her house, and literally took the clothes off her back. Ugh!!! That was a lot! Why did we need to be given 1 million reasons to hate him. It was honestly just annoying.
Sadly I really disliked Quinn too. During the first 30% of the book he was the worst. I thought he’d get better after the sex arrangements were made, but nope he was still a dick (and not the good kind)
Austin was amazing. I loved him and was really hoping the other guys would drop off the face of the earth so April could be with them.
Now, we must talk about April. She was no where near as bad a character as Quinn, but she just seemed so... clueless. It was annoying and frustrating, and by the end I was happy it was over. Her entire character just followed the orders of men. They were all pulling her in different directions and just just went along with it, no questions asked.
The overall story could have been a hell of a lot better. I enjoyed the way the story was told, but the constant jumping around with time and characters also annoying me. I have to say, I understand this is erotica. Sex comes first and plot comes second. But!!!! For the amount of bad story I did not receive enough sex to enjoy this.
STROKE OF LUCK - Opal Carew
HOT! - 3 stars
Plot - 3.5 stars - When April catches her fiancé with another woman on the day before their wedding, she calls it off. Unfortunately he is rich and vindictive, so he financially hurts her as much as possible. Luckily she runs into Quinn, a former college boyfriend, who helps her out.
Writing - 3 stars - Carew creates a sexual scene right from the beginning, and she doesn't let up throughout. So there's not a lot of witty repartee or clever turns of phrases, but there's a plot...and the story moves forward quickly. There's certainly enough depth to keep the reader's interest.
Characters - 4 stars - There's not really a lot of back story for these characters. April is fairly well-rounded, and we hear an explanation of why she has such need for safety and security. But she keeps holding on to her lack-of-trust issues and frustratingly accuses Quinn of not loving her enough or not trusting her, without really knowing if that was the case or not. Austin has a very small description--he's just the second husband, second sex partner. He's sweet, but we don't really know him at all. Quinn is the main hero. We hear a little about his former friendship with April and some about his career path, but his story is not very full. They are all quite likeable and their relationship makes sense, but I didn't have any particularly strong feelings about any of them.
Title - 3.5 stars - This is clever. It's certainly a "stroke of luck" that April runs into Quinn at exactly the right moment to save her from getting kicked out of the hotel and possibly arrested. And the word "stroke" definitely plays into the sexual nature of the story.
Cover - 2.5 stars - There's nothing wrong with male abs, although that's a little too typical of this genre. And I had no idea it was going to be a ménage book--there's no indication about that from the cover.
Overall - 3 stars - You know what to expect from a Carew book, and this one delivered. There was plenty of sex, attractive characters, and an interesting story line. However, there were too many similar sexy scenes and not enough character development. That being said, I found it to be a pleasant and quick read, and I will continue to look for more from this author.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an ARC of this book. I am leaving this review voluntarily, and all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I picked up this title first and foremost because I loved the cover. It drew me in to read the blurb, which further piqued my interest, and so I hit the "request" button. I've never read anything by this author before, so I can't speak to her work as a whole, but this one was definitely a steamy, easy read. It was a fairly low-angst Cinderella story—with two Princes for the price of one—and featured a healthy handful of tropes weaved into the plot with believable ease.
My biggest hangup—and what primarily prevents this read from being a 4 star or above for me—was the constant and frequent POV shifts. I experienced some pretty severe readerly whiplash and often wasn't positive whose head I was in, which made a story with three leads extra complicated to follow.
Other than that, if you go into this read expecting exactly what it advertises—a hot, sexy erotica held up by some pretty solid characters and well-done tropes—then I think you'll enjoy the book. It definitely delivers well in those areas.
Hot. Hot. Hot.
This book lived up to the cover and description. It was super steamy right from the start. Quinn and Austin are both super sweet and sexy.
Lots of sex, not a ton of substance, but fun to read!
This, ooooo, this book! It was a bit of a shocker for me... I picked it based on the cover and ;) title, and had no idea it was a menage a trois romance! That is not what I reach for when I'm looking for some spice, but now, it just might be. It was sweet and spicy, with just the right amount of heat. Don't get me wrong this book was one trope after another, but it was done in such a way that even though I rolled my eyes at EVERYTHING related to the EX-FIANCE, I was also reassured by those hulking muscles owned by not 1 but 2 hunks. Whoa.
Let's just say I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of enjoyment and laughs I got out of this. April, Quinn and Austin are quite a match.
Thanks to @NetGalley for the advanced readers edition of Stroke of Luck and to Opal Crew and St. Martin's Press for making it available.
I've always wanted to read an Opal Carew book, especially one that was menage, my favorite fantasy. For me to be granted this book on NetGalley was a Stroke of Luck (yeah I know) because it is also another favorite, a second chance story! Oh happy days. This book didn't disappoint. I can't wait for my next Opal Carew story.
April Smith just wants to be loved and not abandoned once again. Unfortunately she caught her rich fiance Maurice cheating on her the day before the wedding. She calls it off and he sticks her with the hotel bill she can't begin to pay. When Quinn happens upon her and the hotel security manager outside the suite next to his packing her up he quickly realizes it's his old college girlfriend April. It soon becomes apparent the hotel is demanding she vacate and pay the bill that she can't begin to cover. He steps in to help the damsel in distress. He and his partner Austin has spent their time since college amassing a fortune and now are on vacation looking for love in their lives. Quinn never understood why April dumped him in college but assumed she was a gold digger given she jumped right into Maurice's arms in college. As he spends time with her he finds he wants closure and the sex he never got in college. So he makes her a deal to protect his heart, a month with him and his partner Austin that includes sex with both of them. Oh dear, what's a girl to do...? She agrees and tells him she plans to pay him back for the hotel bill someday.
I enjoyed the interplay between these characters. I liked the close friendship between Austin & Quinn, the differences in their personalities that works together for them. I liked April and her struggle for security and to know she was valued and loved by those in her life. She finds it with these two men as Quinn begins to see April for who she really is thanks to Austin. I knew Ms Carew would give me a quality story and she did.

Sexy, fast paced and exciting! Great pick for those looking for a spicy romance. Free copy provided for an honest review.
I tried to like this book but I could not get into it. I struggled to connect with the story line as well as the characters. Opal Carew can sure write a hot sex scene....and there are plenty of them in this book, unfortunately it wasn't enough to make me love it.
This was the perfect, smutty, lighthearted romance I was looking for! This book was full of really sexy, steamy scenes and I really enjoyed it. I loved the characters and that it was written in multiple POV’s. My only feedback would be that I would’ve liked it to be a little bit longer. I felt like the beginning and the ending were a bit rushed and I would’ve liked a little more background on Quinn and Austin as well as some more angst and sexual tension. I felt the resolution with April’s ex was too rushed and I would’ve liked to see her get some revenge. Overall though, this was a great, quick read and really helped me avoid a book hangover!
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for a free copy of this! All opinions and thoughts are my own. You can purchase a copy on December 1st, 2020! 😊
Melt-your-Kindle hot and a great romantic story. Loved this one!
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for my ARC. All opinions are my own.
Quinn, Austin and April make the perfect threesome. April can’t believe her fiancé cheated on their wedding day.....but that’s what happened, and who is there to witness his wrath but her ex from college Quinn. He steps in to help and the rest is a whirl wind of Vegas proportions.....not one but two weddings, some gambling, lots of nudity and steamy loving. This was a great book.
