This book had so many twists and turns it was like a roller-coaster. It brings sibling issues to a head, especially when a potential new sister cones on to the scene. Is she really a blood sister, how can they prove it, and what effects will it have on the family as somebody has been.lting for years if it's true?
Thank you to Sandie Jones, St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for this ARC.
This is my least favorite of Sandie Jones' books. The story premise is good, and there are definitely some plot twists but this one seemed to drag on a bit for me.
Lauren and Kate are sisters precariously close to being estranged, envying what the other one has, when Jess shows up on their parents' doorstep, claiming to be the daughter of their father. With their father dead it becomes obvious there will be no clear-cut answers - is Jess their sister? Kate's convinced she can't be and Lauren's confident she is. Kate becomes increasingly convinced that Jess is out to get her, just when she and her husband's most desired wish is coming true. Meanwhile, Lauren is getting a second chance that could end up destroying her marriage. And their mother Rose isn't being the slightest bit forthcoming about the past. This was enjoyable, though it feels like the number of twists and plot turns seems slightly over the top. It feels slightly overdone at times, and yet nothing feels completely implausible. Worth the read, but not necessarily one of my favorites.
Sandie Jones does it again. Thank you Minotaur Books and Netgally for the copy.
I ajve read both of Sandie Jones previous books and was a huge fan, but now she is definitely an auto buy author for mr after this one.
The story starts at a Sunday brunch with a family who's life was turned upside down with a knock at the door.
I did not see this ending coming and the way the story unfolds I don't think anyone would.
I would prefer order this now. I promise you won't regret it.
Having not read The Other Woman, Sandie Jones was a new author to me, and this book didn't disappoint. I went in completely blind, only scanning the synopsis, so I was expecting your more typical over-dramatized psychological thriller. Is the half sister who she says she is? Is she out for some kind of vengeance? Though those questions do come up, this is truly a domestic thriller, by which I mean that it's far quieter than its genre-siblings.
For me, what tipped the scales from a 4-star to a 3-star is that I often found myself lost in who is who re: Lauren and Kate. While they're "complete opposites", they didn't have distinct voices, so I kept having to rely on context clues: which one has the family, which one is struggling with fertility? It would've worked better for me had they been differentiated by their voices.
The end of the book is also a bit cacophonous, which stands in stark contrast to everything before it. It's so rooted in reality and then, I assume to give us some meaty plot twists, there is a whole potential fake abortion plot that comes from out of nowhere, as well as calling into question the DNA test, which makes no sense. As the author tries to fake us out, so that we don't see the rather-obvious answer, it all gets rather convoluted.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a softer thriller, as it is an enjoyable read and it doesn't have much in the way of gruesome details or violence, which is a nice break from the expected.
Sandie Jones is an auto-buy author for me so you can imagine how excited I was when I got approved for this book!
Kate and Lauren’s lives seemed like a perfect dream from the outside looking in. But if they were both hiding secrets from each other, both envious of the others life. When Jess walks in to their mothers home in the middle of their Sunday lunch and claims to be their half sister, those secrets start to unravel.
4.5! Like all Sandie Jones books, this one was full of drama, twists and secrets! I was hooked from the start! I both hated and loved the characters and found myself both rooting and booing some of them at the same time!
The alternating perspectives between the two blood sisters offered a unique insight into each of their lives and how different they really were from the outside and inside. Grab your copy on June 16th and see if you can predict the ending!
3 1/2 stars. A DNA test site leads a young woman showing up on a family’s door claiming to be the long- lost daughter of the father who passed away last year. Her arrival up ends both daughters’ lives as they must question who their parents really were and the impact on their lives currently. Plenty of red herrings to get to the end surprise. Good quick read.
I think her books are great for a lot of people. For some reason they do not connect with me. The writing isn't bad and they are solid thrillers. So, I wouldn't discourage anyone to read them. But they just aren't for me.
I found Sandie Jones’ first book, The Other Women, while I was shopping in a second hand store. I had never heard of her before but the plot sounded intriguing so I thought it was worth a go. I finished the book in one day and have not stopped recommending it to people since. I grabbed her second book, The First Mistake, on the day it came out and while it didn’t give me all the same feelings that her other book did I still absolutely loved it. So, when I saw her latest release was available to request on Netgalley I didn’t even have to read the synopsis to know I wanted it.
The Half Sister is the type of fast paced, compelling read that I have come to expect from Ms. Jones. The sudden appearance of a woman claiming to be the illegitimate daughter of their recently deceased father is not the only drama that sisters Kate and Lauren have to deal with. They are each dealing with very personal issues in their own families which kept the tension bubbling just beneath the surface throughout the entire book. There was more than one time in the story where I thought I had it figured out then the next chapter had me second guessing myself and began pulling me in a different direction. Sandie Jones keeps the plot twists coming right up until the very end. There was one teeny thing that I wasn’t a huge fan of at the end but I will save my opinion on that for my book club cause there is no way I’m not adding this to the list of suggestions for our next meeting.
After reading the book I spent some time trying to think of another mystery/thriller writer that Sandie Jones’ writing style reminded me of and for the life of me I couldn’t come up with one. The closest I could come would be a mash up of Mary Higgins Clarke and Janet Evanovich. Any fans of either of those authors would do well to read any or all the books in the Sandie Jones catalog. Her writing style and story ideas are a breathe of fresh air.
The Half Sister by Sandie Jones is a fun, family drama thriller - and my first read by this author!
The story is told from the perspectives of two adults sisters who find out they have a younger half sister... or is she? It's a page turner, and it's a little bit of a Maury episode (DNA tests and all!)
Fans of dark/gruesome crime thrillers aren't going to love this one - it's super tame. (If you've read "The Mother in Law" by Sally Hepworth, it felt similar in that regard.) That said, from a family drama perspective, it's really enjoyable and I think it'd make for the perfect beach read.
4 stars from me!
Thanks St Martins Press and Netgalley for the chance to read/review early. This review will be posted to my Instagram as well: @bookish_molly
So how many of you are curious about long, lost relatives? Would you ever willingly submit your DNA to a database in hopes of finding family? That's the premise of this domestic thriller except the results are not what the 2 unsuspecting sisters bargain for when a young woman shows up claiming to be their half sister. That would mean one of their parents has a secret.
This kept me reading until the end with enough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. The story is fast paced and will keep the reader's interest. This title is due out June 16, 2020. Thanks to @netgalley @stmartinspress @minotaur_books for the opportunity to review this book! Put it on your TBR pile in June!
I flew through this one in a day! I am a huge fan of Sandie Jones and this one did not disappoint for me!
What I liked:
- Full of twists and turns, drama and hidden secrets. Jess turns up claiming to be the half sister of Kate and Lauren and the story unfolds from there!
- I liked the style of the alternating chapter viewpoints between two sisters. This kept the story moving and kept me on the edge of my seat seeing what each sister knew about this big family secret.
- I loved the family secret and how each chapter gave a little more detail on what this secret was!
I thoroughly enjoyed this one!
Kate and Lauren are sisters, both married. Kate is trying to get pregnant and Lauren has three children. The sisters meet frequently and also keep in touch with their mother Rose, especially as their father has recently died.
Their lives are suddenly changed when a young woman shows up with proof that she is their half sister Jess. Just how many secrets does this family have and what will they need to go through to find out the truth.
I did enjoy this book as it was intriguing to know what secrets were being withheld, but I did find the ending a bit complicated.
I thank the publisher and Netgalley for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Oh wow!! I have no words for this book!! It was unputdownable! Shocking twists! Full of mystery.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book . All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I have been a fan of Sandie Jones ever since reading The Other Woman and loving it. I went into this one with high expectations and it delivered! I devoured this book! It has short chapters and each one ends on a note that makes you want to keep going. I felt like I couldn't read fast enough. I had various theories throughout the entire book, but the twist got me! I love a book with some family drama and this one had it. A seemingly perfect family's lives are rocked when an unknown woman named Jess, appears at their door claiming to be a half sister. The sisters, Lauren and Kate don't agree on how they feel about the situation from the start and as they each look into things, more family secrets unfold. Ultimately, the life they thought they knew turns out to be very different. I really enjoyed the fast pace and the twists and turns the book took and the way that it explored the bonds of family. Sandie Jones writes some great characters and some expert plot lines that will have you reading this in one sitting from start to finish! Look for this one, out June 16th! Thank you to Netgalley and Minotaur Books for the opportunity to read this awesome book!

Been there, done that, when will I learn that I should write the book?
Yeah, I'm a half sister, found and been found and wow, it's a long story...and maybe for that reason THE HALF SISTER just didn't do it for me. But, I sure wanted to read it. And as eye rolling as I found the story I really wanted to finish it. Parts of the story were predictable, but parts were head-scratchingly wtf? While it may not have been blindingly obvious to the reader, it should have been to the character. They were portrayed as intelligent, not Trumpheads. But, I guess items of which I will not speak are meant to be surprises for the reader.
As I re-read this review it sound bad. It was actually somewhat ok even though it it didn't do a whole lot for me. My advice to you is read a few pages, if you like it, buy it. Enjoy.

This is my third author, Sadie Jones novel and yep I have read all three she has written.. I really liked "The First Mistakes" but I didn't like "The Other Women" nearly as much so went into this expecting “in the middle”. The story sounded a bit like Lisa Scottoline’s " After Anna" which I gave 4.7 stars and I am so stingy with stars and high praise so you know that was a 5 star book!!
Sorry to say, I was right with my expectation that I would be rating this novel in the middle of the two I read.
I still love Sandie Jones and will read her next novel!
Story is about truth and lies and yes it all comes together at the end. Glad I hung in there.
Want to thank NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this early release granted in exchange for an honest professional review. Publishing Release Date scheduled for Tuesday, June 16, 2020
I have read Sandie Jones' first two books and really enjoyed them. So I was excited to receive an ARC of her newest book The Half Sister. The book is described as a domestic suspense novel. However, I think this is better listed as family drama. There wasn't what I would consider a lot of suspense. There were several things you didn't know as far as who did what, but again, not really suspense. I enjoyed the book, but it just wasn't as good as her first two books. I was even confused a few different places in the book as to who was at a particular scene and who wasn't, which character she was talking about, etc. Although maybe that was just me. It was a nice quick read, just not quite what I was expecting. Have been debating between a rating of 3 and 4, so will round 3.5 up to 4.
I will rate The Half Sister by Sandie Jones 4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐. The Alexander family is shaken up when one night a 22 year old girl, Jess, shows up at their doorstep claiming to be the illegitimate daughter of the families deceased father, Harry. The mother, Rose, and one daughter, Kate, are surprised at her appearance, but the oldest daughter, Lauren, isn't. Lauren has been secretly speaking with the girl for months, but isn't at all prepared for the wave of secrets that Jess is about to unleash for their "perfect" little family. Is Jess really Harry's daughter or is she trying to stage her place in their lives with a hidden motive? This book will leave you wondering who has the most to lose and gain with Jess' disturbance of the Alexander family's lives.
What I enjoyed about this book:
Once the book's momentum got going, I was engrossed in discovering who Jess really was. There were a few mouth dropping points in the story where Jess' parentage came into question and I was like, "Oh, I didn't see that one coming", especially near the ending. The air of mystery throughout this book is what kept me coming back for more. I really wanted to know who Jess was and who had an affair with whom. The characters were semi-likeable, but all very believable.
What I did not enjoy about this book:
It was slow starting. It really had to build its pace. There were some dead parts in the beginning that made me question continuing, but I'm really glad I did.
*Trigger Warning ⚠️ There is domestic violence in this story. If you are at all affected by that, you may not wish to read this book.
I did not like Rose at all, straight from the beginning. I could tell that she was hiding something. She was conniving, a liar and manipulative. Such a horrible mother.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for approving my wish to read and review this book. Thank you to the author for the chance to read your work in exchange of an honest review. I look forward to reading more works by this author.
Ohhhhhh my, my, my! Simply put, Sandie Jones does not disappoint! The Half Sister is a riveting novel that knocked my socks off!!! Sandie Jones is such a sure thing for me that I didn’t even read the description before diving in because I know with her books it’s so much better to go in completely blind! The storyline is well thought out and the perfectly placed twists and turns will leave your jaw hanging open! I really enjoy when a thriller can stump me and I will admit that I absolutely did not figure anything out until it was revealed—LOVE THAT! The Half Sister is a 5 star book that comes out just in time to grab for your summer vacation—this will definitely be a book you will not able to put down!
