I absolutely loved the concept of this graphic novel: a young, disillusioned (yet still hopeful) college student moves into a haunted mansion. The first volume of this graphic novel features several very different ghostly characters, all with their own backstories and problems.
The thing is, the backstories are the majority of the plot. I felt like we barely got introduced to these characters before the graphic novel had ended.
This one was fun, but I think I’ll need to read more of the series before really making a judgment.
It was a lot of fun reading this graphic novel. When Daphne’s life takes some bad turns, she wonders if moving to Los Angeles was all a big mistake. One night, she finds a mysterious house. She doesn’t know it at the time, but this place will change her life forever. As this story moves along, we get to learn more about the past lives of some of the residents there. If you are a fan of ghosts then this is a graphic novel you might want to read.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time with this story. I can't wait for vol. 2. The Characters are charming and fun to get to know. The ghost are fun and id love to get into all their backstory. Art style is gorgeous and fun or easy on the eyes.
Lately I have been reading a bunch of fantastic graphic novel and this one definitely tops the list! I really liked the character ad the premise is pretty fun! I would have like a bit more as far as world building but there will more volumes to figure out what is going on! Looking forward to reading more of these when they come out!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an arc for an honest review!
Endearing. Colorful. Trivial.
My favorite aspect about this comic was the art style. I thought the illustrations fit the story very well, and even the tiniest details made the reading experience all that more enjoyable. The way the ghosts were not only pictured in their very own color scheme, but also had their speech bubbles differentiated was a very smart choice. The artist behind these drawings is obviously very skilled, and was a perfect choice to have illustrate this comic series.
I also loved the inclusion of LGBTQ+ themes, plot lines, and characters. I appreciated the fact that although queerness was a topic explored, it wasn't the main focus of the story or ostracized in any way. It was normalized, and fun, and still remained inclusive.
There were of course a few thinks that I found irksome about this comic. For one, I did not find myself enjoying the main character at all. I did appreciate the fact that the reader is hinted at some much needed character development on her part, as well as the self-awareness she had, but she was still rather unlikable. She was naive, impulsive, and did not think before acting or getting angry. The other characters were easier to fall in love with, but besides a few of the ghosts, they were all rather surface-level and lacked depth and nuance.
One of my favorite things about this story was the focus on backstory. I loved that the author made the choice to begin every issue with a few panels of character backstory, as it added some much needed intrigue and as a reader, I will never not love having the opportunity to learn more about what makes a character tick.
In the end, an enjoyable story that needed a few tweaks here and there but nothing that could not be explored or fixed in future volumes. Once again, a huge thanks to NetGalley for approving me this early review copy!
Graphic novels are usually a hit or miss for me. Here we follow the story of Daphne, who moves across the country to attend the same college as her boyfriend Ronnie. After suffering a blow to the heart, she founds herself lost and trying to find some comfort at twilight. She stumbles on this mysterious mansion, where she finds a group of ghosts that welcome her into their circle and let her live there.
The artwork is truly so gorgeous. I was astounded at the level of detail and how the color schemes affected/changed the moods of the story itself. I would highly reccomend buying yourself a physical copy because every single piece of artwork is so masterfully created that I had my jaw drop at certain points. Not only that, but there's a clear plotline and story happened here (to be continued) that really set us up for what Daphne's dealing with here. It didn't fall flat, I wasn't bored for one second or one page, because there were enough action scenes to keep me intrigued and curious.
Also! There are openly queer characters here, which I deeply appreciated. The side characters were some of the most entertaining parts of the books for me personally, and I think the rest of the world will fall in love with this undead gang as much as I did.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Very enjoyable story about a girl going off to college in LA and running into ghosts. It is a very solid volume 1 and makes you want to continue the story. I did feel like I wanted more and hope that we will be given more information in the next volume. I loved the color choice and the drawing style. For the flashbacks, I was not a fan of that brown/grey tone used. Overall a solid read, looking forward to the next volume...
Wow, this was just a whole whirlwind of a rollercoaster ride! I'm usually not the biggest fan of graphic novels so when I request one, it is mostly because I'm intrigued by the description of the plot and boy, did this deliver! From the gorgeous art style to the plot that had me laughing but also lowkey confused at points, this was just such a fun and quick read!
Definitely would recommend to anyone new to graphic novels because this was a great first installment and I can't wait for the sequel!
Like: It is bright colorful and fun story. At the same time the story could get dark at times. The mysteries that littered the story that make you want to read the rest of the series.
Art: Clothing style of main character was chosen well.
*4.5
Ghosted in LA is my first graphic novel of the year and I am not disappointed!
The storyline follows a girl who just moved to LA for college. She has a rough start and to make things complicated she encounters a manor with ghosts. These ghosts are unique individuals who seem to be stuck in the manor.
I really like the diversity of the characters and the illustrations. The representation in this novel is amazing! I enjoyed the shifts of point of view of each character that gave us a glimpse of the ghost’s past. I do think the main character, Daphne, is a bit obnoxious but I see a potential of character growth. Another aspect I did not like was how fast things happened at the beginning. There was so much going on to a point of it not being plausible. But I do understand it’s a graphic novel and after that, it was enjoyable to read.
Overall, it was a lovely read and I am looking forward to reading more of Daphne and her adventures. Thank you to Netgalley and Boom!Box for the copy in exchange of an honest review.
4 stars ⭐
This was so cute! This graphic novel tells us the story of the new coming of Daphne, a girl that moved to another state to be with her boyfriend only to be broken up with within arrival. The story is really cute, i loved the characters and the situations presented, just amazing!
I'm hoping the second issue comes out soon. I can't wait to read all the backstories of all the other characters and to find out what is really going on at the mansion. I'm a sucker for stories in which you have to discover the secondary character's back stories and this delivered.
The art and character desing is also gorgeous. Highly recommend!♡
I have been on a roll LATELY with reading great graphic novels and this one was no different! While I do think this one suffered a little bit from a lack of world building, I still VERY much enjoyed this and I cannot wait to see where the story goes in the next volumes! Also, bonus points for showcasing so many of my favorite parts of Los Angeles. That is def the thing that I am looking the most forward to getting in future volumes and I just can't! wait!
Daphne moves to L.A. to attend college and be near her boyfriend. She quickly finds herself feeling alienated after she has a fight with her best friend, her boyfriend dumps her and her roommate seemingly hates her. While wandering the city she stumbles upon an apartment building that is occupied by ghosts.
This is a collection of 4 comic books. I hadn't read anything by this author before. The artwork was good and the story has promise. The tale didn't quite pull me in as much as I'd hoped. It came off as very introductory and didn't get us too involved in the story (yet). The story will likely be continued in a 2nd volume as this one didn't wrap things up completely. I am curious to see where this story goes so would checkout follow-up volumes.
The first volume of Ghosted in LA, takes a whole new approach to the sad, lonely coed on her own for the first time and it is definitely worth checking out! Main character Daphne chooses a college across the country in L.A. to stay stay with her high school boyfriend just to find within the first week that she has a horrible roommate, the other people on campus are not lining up to hang out with her and the boyfriend- well, he discovered on the cross-country drive with his dad that he is gay.
it gets interesting when Daphne illegally moves into a mansion off-campus that is occupied by a series of ghosts from many different eras of L.A.'s history. Their back stories and interactions with/about Daphne really add the depth to this book that makes you want to come back and read more.
I am looking forward to see how this story develops. Daphne has a long way to go before she becomes a fully actualized protagonist, but the start to her story makes me look forward to seeing her get there.
Daphne has just started college and it’s not going exactly how she expected. She is in a big fight with her best friend who is hundreds of miles away, her roommate hates her, and to top it all of, the boyfriend she followed to college in L.A. breaks up with her week one. Feeling alone, she stumbles across Rycroft Manor while exploring the city. Despite being haunted by ghosts, Daphne feels accepted and decides to move in.
I loved every aspect of the art style in this graphic novel. I loved that the beginning pages and chapter pages all looked like old wallpaper. I also loved how Keenan used different shades to indicate different timelines. This helped indicate transitions but in a very unique way. And finally, I just loved the overall color theme and aesthetic.
Not only were the images fantastic, but so was the storyline. I really appreciated that some of the ghosts’ backstories were included and that those backstories had parallels to what was happening in the main timeline. I felt like this was a great way to get to know the characters, especially in this first volume. There is also some great social commentary sprinkled throughout that makes this a fun but important read.
I absolutely plan on continuing with this series, and might not even be able to wait until the next bind-up. Highly recommend!
A fun, unique graphic novel! The art is stunning and the colours used complemented each other so well on the page!
The premise was the first thing that hooked me. Living in a manor with ghosts who’ll give you advice on your social life? Sign me up!
This was a good introduction to Daphne and the ghosts. However, the plot was a bit lacking. The first volume eased the reader into the story and introduced all the characters. This felt a bit slow for me but it soon picked up halfway. Rest assured, this is only the first volume so there is definitely more ghostly shenanigans to come.
Daphne is a sweet main character, but I found her to be a bit bland. Nothing about her stands out. The ghosts, however, were really interesting. They all had different personalities and I am excited to read more about their pasts.
And to add: I loved how diverse the cast was! It was a breath of fresh air.
Overall, a good start to a new series! I will be checking out future volumes.
‘Ghosted in LA’ is about Daphne, who (despite the advice from her best friend) follows her boyfriend to college in LA only to be dumped. Having no one to talk to, Daphne tries and fails to befriend her unfriendly roommate. With no friends, an unfriendly roommate, and in a different city, Daphne then explores the city and stumbles across Rycroft Manor. Rycroft Manor is a beautiful mansion… the only downside to it is its residents, who just happen to be ghosts.
Firstly, I must note that the illustration is gorgeous and full of life and detail. The colours are vibrant and the panels were engaging. I really enjoyed the visual aspect of this graphic novel.
I liked the diversity here in terms of characters and of the ghosts. Discovering more about the ghosts and their pasts were interesting and fun.
The pacing felt a little inconsistent at times, with it feeling difficult to form an attachment to certain characters. In saying that, this is the first volume, so it leaves enough room for more development in future volumes.
Overall, ‘Ghosted in LA’ possesses an interesting premise decorated with beautiful illustrations. This is a light-hearted read and great for readers looking for a coming-of-age contemporary graphic novel that incorporates a positive LGBQTIA+ outlook with an edge of mystery.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this comic in exchange for an honest review.
I keep bouncing between giving this 4 or 5 stars, so it’s definitely a 4.5 star read for me. The artwork is beautiful and I loved all the characters featured. It was especially enjoyable for me as a college student because I feel like it’s rare to find books about people in my age group — it’s either high schoolers or young adults post-college.
I’ve been looking for more contemporary graphic novels to dive into and this one hit the spot with the perfect blend of humor, drama, and supernatural elements. I’ll definitely be on the lookout for the next installment in the “Ghosted in LA” series!
Huge thank you to Netgalley for providing an e-ARC of this graphic novel!
To be honest, I went into it because I wanted a quick read and also just read more graphic novels to expand my horizons, but I was immediately hooked into it and found that I wanted more of the story. Ghosted in LA follows Daphne, a who just moved to LA for college. Her move was done to follow in her boyfriend's footsteps, only to be dumped when she got to LA. Realising that she's all alone, she takes a walk around the city and stumbles upon this mansion, that just so happens to be inhabited by ghosts.
In general, I adore ghost stories that don't paint ghosts as the 'bad guys', and explore a deeper connection between human and ghost characters. This graphic novel delivered on that, with the ghosts being Daphne's solace, comfort and first friends in the lonely city of LA. From Daphne taking a swim while asking twenty questions to some of the ghosts, to offering to by one of them a vinyl record, her interactions with the ghosts are honestly iconic.
But what I loved most about this story are the ghosts themselves. The ghosts of the mansion range from Agi, the owner of the mansion, to Maurice who has a temper, to Ricky who just died five years ago and is a big fan of indie music. They all have personality, and each have a different relationship with Daphne, which I really enjoyed.
Not only that, but for a story about ghosts, Ghosted in LA does touch on very human aspects of living in LA, and I loved that about it.
Absolutley LOVED the art style of this graphic novel. Vibrant and uniquely drawn, kept my attention and had me going back to admire each panel!
The story is super cute as well. I adored Daphne. I loved how we got back story on the ghost as well!! Can't wait for the next installment!
