Having a child who is busy with Girl Scouts, I was hoping this would be a book filled with simple recipes she could share with her troop, cooking over a campfire is one of the highlights of any camping trip. This was not the book I was looking for. While providing some basic recipes, it was more about cooking anything in foil. Some of the recipes were more complicated (too many ingredients) as well.
Simple yet enticing, with a good variety of options that are all simple enough to try and to use on the regular.
Great ideas for foil dinners, whether you're looking for something fun at home, or out camping. We pre-packed a few of these and they were a delightful success at our last Mommy & Me campout!

Foil Pack Dinners was an okay book. I like the idea of using foil as a cooking tool method.
I love cooking, but I hate cleaning up; which is I appreciate aluminum foil. I have to admit that I wasn't expecting much from this book, but I was surprised by the number of mouthwatering recipes contained within its pages. My only complaint is that I would have liked for it to include more pictures.
What could be easier - pop a few ingredients on a piece of foil, fold up the ends and toss it in the oven or on the grill - then open up the packet and dinner is served! Well, it could be easy if you had some great ideas for what to put in those little foil packets. That is where Foil Pack Dinners comes in and saves the day. From a chapter on different ways to make your foil packets to sections on meat, fish and vegetarian based meals, this cookbook will provide you with a plethora of ideas for dinner. The directions are concise and easy to follow and the recipes come alive in full-color photographs.
This book opened my eyes to the art of foil cooking. It also goes into an overview of the different cooking methods and how to properly use foil for those ways. Who knew the many types of foil and their uses? Also the different shapes to make when cooking the many great recipes in this book? The recipes are easy to follow, great tasting and tells who how to foil wrap for cooking. This is an interesting new way of cooking that is easy to prep and clean up, but also create dishes in a different way.
This cookbook has some great recipes for camping or oven cooking or grilling with foil. I liked the variety of options that I would have never thought of myself. I only wish that it had more pictures of the food.
TITLE: Nothing special here
I was hoping to find recipes that worked especially well in foil packets. That is not the case here: These are average recipes--nothing unusual, but tweaked a little bit. The author puts the food in foil packets rather than a casserole dish, sheet pan, pot or pan. Very disappointing.
Not exactly what I thought it would be. When I think of foil pack dinners, I think of simple and easy to prepare. The recipes were fussier than I had hoped.
Excellent breadth of recipes. Simple and exciting and easy to execute. Love the mix of flavors and dishes and I can’t wait to try these out.
My family loves camping so Foil pack dinners are a favorite in this house. This book was packed full of delicious foil dinners, some that we knew and many many more new ones to try!
This little recipe book not only has great recipes it also has information on using foil, assembling styles, cooking information for the grill, oven and campfire as well as safety tips. I love that the book not includes the recipe but also mouthwatering photos !
I recieved a digital copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Quarantine has given us a chance to experient in our lives. Experimenting with food can seem overwhelming but it isn't really. that hard. She teaches us how to use tin foil packets. I used them when camping as a teen and this book reminded me how much I liked them. She showed different techniques to making meals or parts of meals. I am hoping to add some of these meals into my food routines. The meals were easy to make, very tasty and fun!!!!!!
This is a great book for those looking for creative ways to cook everyday meals. Most of the ingredients are things I keep in my pantry on a regular basis and wrapping everything in foil makes for super quick clean up! I liked the variety of offerings (Yardbirds, Carnivore Cravings, Catch of the Day, Handheld, and From the Garden). The pictures are nice, but I would have enjoyed having more of them. My favorite and most used cookbooks have a picture that accompanies every (or almost every) recipe.
Thank you NetGalley and Tiller Press for the ARC in exchange for my opinion.
What a cool book! "One pot" or low effort cooking is all the rage these days and this is such a unique take on the idea. I loved it!
Foil Pack Dinners could be the best cookbook for me! As a kid, my family was always camping and I would always love when we would cook camp potatoes in foil packs over the fire. In my adult years I’ve experimented a little bit more with foil pack cooking but this book has completely raised the bar.
Foil Pack Dinners is full of amazing sounding recipes, all of which are cooked in foil packs. While I was reading, I kept sending different recipes to my husband. He would tell me that each one was what we should make for dinner tomorrow! The book breaks down the recipes by protein groups. As a coastal girl, I was wicked excited at all the different seafood recipes and can’t wait to try out the Bourbon and Bacon Shrimp pack!
I honestly cannot wait to try all of these recipes! Like the Buffalo Chicken Bread or the Grilled Garlic Mussels. If you’re a fan of foil pack cooking, this book is definitely for you!
An excellent cookbook with easy, delicious recipes.
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for my ARC. All opinions are my own.
Foil Pack Dinners: 100 Delicious, Quick-Prep Recipes for the Grill and Oven by Julia Rutland offers readers a variety of meals with less than an hour of cooking time. Steaming food in packets has been a tried and tested method of cooking that the French and Italians have used for generations. Perfect for grilling, campfire cooking, or making a quick meal in the oven, there’s absolutely no other cooking method out there that’s as fast, fun, mess-free, and versatile as foil packs. Recipes include Chicken Cordon Bleu, Pepperoni Cheese Bread, Louisiana-Style BBQ Shrimp, Black Bean Enchiladas, and Summer Squash Spirals with Ricotta and Basil. With recipes for both carnivores and vegetarians alike, this book includes a little something for everyone.
Foil Pack Dinners is a book that grabbed my attention easily. We have all been cooking more at home, and now that we are in the heat of summer using the grill or quick and easy options are priority. Getting to try something new and different, that I can still tailor to my family's taste is great too. I like that the author gave more detail about the different kinds of foil, and the logistics of folding, moving, and cooking in foil packets before getting to the recipes. I thought I would already know the majority of it, but I learned a great deal and it helped me have a much more enjoyable and successful experience when I started doing this more often. I found the recipes themselves to be very clear and easy to follow, and nicely varied and with plenty of room for personalization. There is a great deal of fresh produce and various spices used- so as always read through the recipes first to make sure you have all the called for ingredients- or something you would like to substitute. I am still finding random things missing from store shelves, so planning ahead and with specific recipes or possibilities in mind is important. I thought the recipes were well organized. I like that the metric conversion charts were included at the end of the book, and thought that the images used nicely represented the food described.
Foil Pack Dinners is a well written and organized cookbook. I recommend giving it a look, but think that for myself it would be a library borrow rather than a purchase since I have no cookbook shelving space left.
Turns out you can cook more than just fish and chopped vegetables! You can cook burgers, chili, chicken…You can even cook sandwiches! Tin foil: not just for conspiracy theorist hats!
I loved this book.
My culinary imagination is limited in the kitchen and even more limited when grilling. Potatoes, and eggplant are about the only things I can ever remember wrapping in tin foil to put on my (husband’s) grill. This book opened a whole new world for me. My testing was done in the oven since I never light the grill unless it is absolutely necessary (when being booed and pelted by peanuts from the peanut gallery). BBQs are within the purview of my husband’s set of culinary skills. Next time he lights the grill I will toss on a few foil pack fish dinners, since they are the easiest to put together and the quickest to cook.
What did I love most about this book? I LOVED the concept, the photos, and most of the combinations of seasonings and ingredients. The construction and beauty of the colorful “meals” left me drooling over each and every recipe – even those that I will never make or eat.
A warning here for those people who do not mix meat and milk or eat pork and seafood in their kitchens, about half of the recipes fall into those categories and even the most adept at making substitutions will find it hard to do so and still remain somewhat faithful to the recipes.
That being said, at least half of the book will be tried in my kitchen. Most of the recipes do not require much or difficult preparation.
Tonight we tried a fish recipe (baked salmon with orange and herbs) and yesterday we tried the Chicken Thighs with Broccoli and Rice – both were delicious. Based on those two successes we will be trying the Basic Hobo Basket recipe next and we will definitely be trying all of the fish recipes. I have earmarked another 10 recipes (chicken, turkey and vegies) that I am anxious to try.
My husband and I have not eaten out in nearly five months, since the outbreak of corona virus in the west. NetGalley has been kind enough to provide me with ARCs of at least 10 cookbooks – all of which I have read and enjoyed. Both my husband and I are thankful for the variety of tasty dishes this has afforded us. We are a little less thankful the subsequent weight gain.
Thank you NetGalley and Tiller Press for this beautiful book by Julia Rutland
