I never got the chance to read this one before it was archived, but the idea behind it is so promising! I'm truly grateful for the publisher giving me a chance to read it, and will be looking for a physical copy in my local bookstore.
It's 1950, and the war is over, physics-loving Rosalind Porter feels guilty because she was part of the Manhattan Project, where the atomic bombs were created, but that's not all as she is also heartbroken. However, she manages to overcome those two problems until the FBI tells her that she has to get back into a relationship with her ex, Thomas Wheeler, in order to extract information from him, as Wheeler is suspected of having sold crucial information to the Russians.
That sounds great, doesn't it? Sadly, the book focuses more on Roz's love and moral interest than solving the mystery of whether Wheeler sells the info to Russians.
The plot at the beginning was engaging but as it continues, it ended up being a story that didn't meet my expectations. I expected a little more drama, and also learn more about the Russians.
What I did like was knowing about Charlie's past in order to connect with him, and also to let us know about the horrible reality of the war. And the romance seemed too insta-love, it lacked development. Anyway, I was disappointed and I don't think I will read another book by the author.
Dnf. Not a huge fan on espionage thrillers. I wanted to try it out but this wasn’t the book for me. If that’s the genre you like, pick this title up.
This one was an interesting read. I quite like the historical romance and the guessing game of the story. I am not sure if that was intended or not but it kept me wondering what will happen next. The characters are well introduced and the world building is vivid. The story moves along at a constant pace which I'm okay with but it could have gone a bit faster at certain chapters. Other than that if you enjoy historical fiction, this one will take you on a ride.
I wanted to like this book I just couldn't get into it, but I'm not blaming the book here sometimes I'm just not in the mood for a book and no matter how either the book or I try it's just not the right time. I would like to come back to this one someday and try again so it's staying on my shelf and when I do read it I will come back and give a better review. For now it's 2 stars because it didn't hook me.
i didn't get this book via netgalley until about 2 months after it published. i read it from BOTM before that. it was good, okay, started off strong but kind of fizzled out for me. unsatisfying finish.
I must preface this review by saying that this book just wasn't for me. That isn't to say that this novel was 'bad' by any means. It just didn't do it for me..
If you enjoy spy novels or historical fiction about WWII, then I would definitely give this one a try. This was just okay for me, but it may be a win for you!
I do not enjoy historical fiction, however when I read the synopsis of this book, I knew I had to read it. This was just as good as I thought it was going to be! I loved the characters and was invested in their love story. Great read!
This novel, set during the Cold War, has something for everyone--mystery, romance, history, suspense, and espionage. The characters were well-developed, and I admired the strength and courage of the female protagonist. I wish I could say that I loved the book, but it was a little slow and lacking in substance for me. However, I'm glad to see that so many others have enjoyed the book.
I really loved this book. It was full of mystery, romance, and suspense. I felt like there were so many characters to love, to hate, just perfect. I think Charlie was my favorite and seemed like a giant teddy bear.
I have to say this was going to be a five star read for me until I got to the last chapter and maybe I am old fashioned. I just didn't like the ending. I would change this to a 5 star read if there is a sequel.
This book came highly recommended by a friend who enjoys historical fiction so I was excited to give it a try. I did think the story was entertaining, but I didn't find any connection with the characters or the plot. In order for me to enjoy this genre, it really needs to stand out and unfortunately, this one didn't hit the mark. *Advance copy provided by the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
I liked this book... but didn't love it. I picked Atomic Love for several reasons. One, I love a good historical romance that is steeped in history that isn't well known- here, we have a female physicist who helped build the bombs that fell on Japan and feels enormous guilt over it. Two, I'm fascinated by stories about spies that aren't too technical- and we have that here with Rosalind's former boyfriend reappearing in her life just as the FBI has informed her that Weaver is most likely feeding secrets to the Soviets. The story was good, but I felt that it's billing as a romance fell flat. Rosalind is torn between two men, and it just felt really wishy washy. I could predict just about everything that was coming and it didn't feel new. On the other hand, I couldn't put it down and felt some investment in the characters. I think it would've been a better novel if it had picked a lane and stayed there. As it is, I'm glad I read it, but I don't know that I'll remember much about it a month from now.
I absolutely love historical fiction and this book does not disappoint. This book was so amazing.
Although I did have a hard time getting into it with its slow start. I am so glad I did not give up on reading it because it turned out to be a favorite this year.
I highly recommend this book to everyone even if your not a fan of historical fiction it’s a great love story.
I am sorry to say, this was not among my favorites. I was hoping for more intrigue and less romance, but I guess I should have paid more attention to the title. The main character was sappy and I bristled at the choices she made. The FBI agent was much more interesting as was his POW experience. There were very limited sub-plots. Just not enough intrigue for me. If you are looking for a moon-eyed romance, you will love this one. 2.5 stars, but I’ll round up to 3.
This was an absolutely fantastic read! Engaging from start to finish, I devoured this historical fiction in less than 24 hours. While the book was a little heavy on the bedroom scenes, I also understand that during that time frame of 1950s America, that is where many of the secrets were exchanged, and it added vital intelligence to the Russian spy infiltration. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to read this book!
I really enjoyed this book about life in the aftermath of The Manhattan Project. It was really interesting to see how working on it and believing it would be used for good impacted the main character when she saw the destruction it caused. She suffered a lot of guilt as a remote, and I have to admit that I never before considered how The Manhattan Project impacted the people that had worked on it.
It was also really interesting to learn how women were removed from roles and positions they had during the war, since they were “no longer needed” once men returned from war.
I was also really caught up in the “love triangle” and seeing how it would turn out.
I did feel that the storylines could’ve been a little more fleshed out. I found Roz and Charlie’s love story to be a bit hard to believe - it felt a bit rushed for the sake of the story.
I also expected this to be more historical fiction as opposed to historical romance. I’m not sure where I got that impression from, but I would’ve liked more focus on the history and events of that time. Overall, though, it was a good book that I would recommend to others.
Atomic Love by Jennie Fields is a book of historical fiction. It could also be described as a mystery laced with betrayal, espionage, love, spying, and secrets. The three main characters face several moral challenges. Each of these main characters are spiritually and physically wounded by World War II.
The setting is during 1950. The research the author did was evident, thorough and spot on. The story is told by two points of view. Special Agent Charlie Szydlo ( a PTSD riddled POW who returns home to become a lawyer and an FBI agent) and Rosalind Porter (a physicist who worked on The Manhattan Project which leads to the creation of the atomic bomb) Roz is a brilliant person but of course she has to deal with the emotional toxicity of being a part of creating a bomb that killed so many people. In addition she has to deal with working while other women were expected to stay home.
The characters are very well written and each of the main characters carried tons of baggage and were very well developed. You definitely find yourself rooting for them and hoping that the story ends the way you want it to. The story peaked my interest from the very first page. There are portions where the plot gets dark but that is part of what makes it so thought provoking. The suspense and the plot twists leave you anxious to read the next page. This leaves the reader wondering how you have come to read much longer than you intended.
The author has a wonderful gift and I look forward to reading what she writes next. Well Done!
I would like to thank the author, Penguin Group Putnam and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this mystery/love story/historical fiction set in Chicago in 1950. It was well written and suspenseful. My favorite part were the Chicago details. I miss Marshall Field's, so having a narrator who works in the jewelry department of Marshall Field's was like a trip down memory lane for me. The author captured the lives of immigrants living and working in Chicago, from their homes to Hyde Park to the lake and dinners at The Berghoff. I love Chicago history and appreciated all the details. I had anticipated a novel that was more about a woman who worked on the Manhattan Project at the University of Chicago, but instead the novel centered on the mystery of her love affair with a fellow scientist and her attraction to an FBI agent investigating a possibly spy for the Russians. It was an interesting storyline but I was hoping for more about the Manhattan Project. Still, I would recommend this novel for anyone who loves Chicago history and historical fiction.
She was a physicist, working to build the atomic bomb. She did not realize until after the results of her work. He also worked on the bomb, but has become tangled in a mess. She thinks their love can save him., but is it enough?
Courtesy of NetGalley, I received an ARC of Atomic Love by Jennie Fields. This historical novel captured the atmosphere of post WWII, Chicago, the conflicting emotions of creating nuclear fission, and the ethics of the atomic bomb. Portraying the lasting effects of war, living with secrets and lies, and the struggles of women in science drew me into this story of espionage and romance. I was pleased to learn of the connection to historical events and people and I highly recommend this well written book.
