Not a book for true beginners, but what a lovely resource. I enjoy learning from different artists and botanicals are my favorite. I feel that this book has a nice mix of techniques and supplies for the beginner-intermediate artist looking to improve skills.

This book focused on how to draw or paint botanicals. For a book "for artists," she spent a lot of time describing the basic materials, tools, terms, and techniques needed for the different mediums – graphite pencils, colored pencils, fine point markers, silverpoint, watercolor, and gouache. She then provided step-by-step instruction on how to accurately draw or paint leaves, flowers and petals, fruits and berries, stems and branches. The instruction focused a lot on what things to look at and consider when trying to accurately replicate the live plant or a plant in a photograph. Overall, I'd recommend this book to those wanting to learn how to or improve their realistic, botanical drawings or paintings.

Drawing and Painting Botanicals for Artists is a tutorial and style guide for rendering botanical subjects in a variety of media. Due out 16th June 2020 from Quarto on their Rockport imprint, it's 144 pages and will be available in paperback format.

This is a nicely designed and well presented book. It is aimed at artists who are engaged in, or studying botanical art subjects and still life drawing. The introduction provides an overview of tools and supplies, preparing botanical materials and how to visualize and see as an artist. The main tutorials are split into two sections for different media: drawing and rendering with pencils and other drawing tools (including colored pencils), and painting with watercolor (and gouache).

Although it's a simple book which allows the learner to utilize widely available materials for skill building, it contains a lot of valuable information, and I could well see this book being used to advantage in a classroom setting. It is aimed at intermediate to advanced artists but there are definitely takeaways for beginners as well. There are some tutorials showing how to break down references in perspective and transfer them realistically to the page.

A very useful book. It would make a good addition to the artist's home reference library, a classroom or other formal setting, or gift (with supplies) for an artist.

Four stars.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

A good informational book, not a step by step type of book. There are a few examples of photos to show techniques.

Lovely book taking you through from concept to completion. A wonderful introduction to the art of drawing botanicals. I am not an artist but Lockdown 2020 has shown me that it is never too late to try!

Really, Really fantastic book on painting and drawing Botanicals. It really covers everything and more than I wanted to know.
The first part of the book covers drawing, from graphic pencils, colour pencils to silverpoint, paper and equipment, this is followed by drawing techniques and drawing subjects. All the information and the illustrations are amazing and easy to understand.
The Painting follows the same format but looks at watercolor, gouache, paintbrushes and surfaces. with painting techniques and painting subjects. Again all the information is amazing, well described with plenty of examples and illustrations.
This is a very professional book for both experienced and beginners to learn from.

I have always struggled with drawing plant life and this is just the book that I needed. The author provided clear instruction and guidance that would be helpful to botanical art beginners and more experienced artists alike. This is a beautiful book filled with gorgeous artwork and exercises to practice on. I would not recommend it to the brand new artist but there is plenty here to learn for everyone. I am now inspired to try painting for the first time due to the beauty and instruction in this book.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced ereader copy in exchange for my honest review.

No wonder the artwork in this book seemed so familiar. I remember admiring the beautifully painted flowers on teabag boxes in my favourite supermarket. No doubt about it...Karen Kluglein's delicate flowers are exquisite. The first rule I apply before I would buy or review an art instruction book is that the artist must be great at what she/he does! The art in the book must be beautiful and this book sure meets the criteria!

The two main parts of this book are: part 1 on drawing and part 2 on painting.
Both parts would be useful for those who want to improve on their paintings of flowers and a few fruits and vegetables. There are detailed instructions, accompanied by step-by-step photographs.
One grouse I have is that sometimes I cannot see the differences in the photos from one step to the other. The differences are so subtle. Perhaps it would help if the instructions are given as captions of each photo. As it is, the written instructions are on one side and the photos on the other.

Also, maybe some videos would work better here. But it could be because I'm not at that level of an artist yet!

I marvelled at how botanical artists sometimes have to measure their subjects to make sure their drawings are as accurate as possible! And knowing how to mix colours so that they look like the real flower!

Definitely a good introduction to the art of serious botanical painting.

Thank you Netgalley and Rockport Publishing for the ARC. This is my honest review.

Beautifully illustrated guide to refining the art (and science) of botanical drawing and painting. This book is specifically aimed for artists and covers a great deal of ground in terms of techniques and mediums.

I highly recommend this lovely book for both beginner artists and accomplished artists interested in the subject.

Drawing and Painting Botanicals for Artists
How to Create Beautifully Detailed Plant and Flower Illustrations
by Karen Kluglein

Gorgeous breathtaking images I would love to emulate. This book inspires and educates all in one.

What I liked:
* The simplicity of the layout for the book with one section for drawing and one for painting
* The way the sections were similar in presenting mediums and supplies, essential techniques and then subjects.
* The glossary of key terms – learned a few new ones
* Information about silverpoint – something new to me
* The gorgeous illustrations
* The precision with which information was shared
* The color charts for both pencil and painting
* The tips and inside information
* The step by step progression for subjects – it would be easy to follow and perhaps create using the steps shared
* The feeling that I wanted to go downstairs, grab pencils and start drawing after a trip to the garden

What I didn’t like:
* knowing that no matter how many times I try I probably will never create a botanical as precise and pretty as the ones in this book.

Did I like this book? Yes
Would I like to have it in my library? Definitely!

This book has excellent drawings and tutorials covering a wide variety of botanical's for those interested in learning artistic techniques for creating realistic drawings and paintings. The artwork is beautiful and does it's best to make this easy follow for artists. Not as in-depth as others I have seen but still an excellent reference book.

This is a beautiful book with lots of exercises and clear instructions which will inspire readers to practise their botanical art. It has sections on drawing and painting and lists all the materials you need for each project. I loved this book and I will definitely be buying it, although I feel that I need to use simpler art books first, unfortunately!

What is the best graphite pencil to use when sketching a flower?

Is it better to use a photograph or a live specimen?

What are the best techniques to adjust the edges of a leaf to make it appear realistic?

Between hot press and cold press papers, which is the best painting surface for acrylic or watercolor painting?

All of these questions (and more) are answered within this book. As an absolute beginner to drawing and watercolor techniques, I can certainly appreciate the helpful hints and the step-by-step directions on how to complete various projects.

I recommend this book to beginners and intermediate artists alike. If you're looking for a creative outlet during this time, then look no further than this book.

Drawing and Painting Botanicals for Artists
How to Create Beautifully Detailed Plant and Flower Illustrations
by Karen Kluglein
There are many books available that don’t give a great definition or instruction to help understand how to accomplish what was promised. That was not the case for this book. I love the key terms listed at the beginning. I felt everything was well defined from supplies to techniques used. This is a great asset when learning. I was also impressed with how thorough everything was explained. This book is a fabulous resource. I look forward to practicing!

Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for the opportunity to read and give an honest review of this book.

This book is not for beginners. It builds on experience and techniques the artist already has. Drawing with pencils, micron pens, and colored pencils is covered as well as painting with watercolors, gouache, and acrylics.

The illustrations are clear and attractive. The explanations of the process are easy to understand. I enjoyed learning more about botanical art.

An illustrated guide that shows you how to draw and then paint botanicals. This is not really for beginners. All of the projects are pretty advanced, but it does give you step by step instructions to give them a try.

I like drawing, but I'm still a newbie. I like drawing plants and flowers. So I decided to read this book. And yes this book is for someone who is advanced. It requires details and paying attention to the techniques as well. If you are new, perhaps you want to look for other books. I recommend this book for people who are looking for a reference to draw a realistic style.

by Karen Kluglein is a book I requested from NetGalley and the review is voluntary. This has a brief history of the art, descriptions of what equipment would be needed, examples of techniques, use of different media, and plenty of step-by-step instructions. The illustrations were beautiful! The instructions were easy to follow and detailed. I enjoyed it and would recommend it.
