Wow! What a ride! I almost called out to work because I needed to keep reading to find out what happened! Great writing, interesting characters and a plot you just can't put down! Thank you so much!
I had read plenty of reviews urging me to pick this one up, and was thrilled to receive a copy thanks to Netgalley and Penguin Group - Dutton for a copy of this title in exchange for my personal review.
WHAT a great thriller! For me, any title that keeps me guessing like this one is a treasure, the twists and turns of this book made it one I need to binge read until the end!
As a new to me author, I found it so fun that it’s a duo that writes with this pen name — some of my favorite authors are duos! Already added The Woman Inside to my want to read list because this one was SO, so good! 4.5 stars from me!
IN CASE OF EMERGENCY by E. G. Scott is a pretty standard thriller. The beginning didn’t grip me in any way to keep reading. However once I got further into the storyline I was engaged. I liked the intense mystery elements with the many red herrings and unknowns. I was guessing until the very end although I didn’t really care who did it. The writing was very detailed and sometimes too much so. I liked the different points of view but felt there were too many.
This book is great! Would definitely recommend. Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
This definitely is a fast paced thriller that I think a lot of people will enjoy. I think the hardest part of enjoying this one was that I just wasn't sold on Charlotte's character. She's a neurosurgeon who just doesn't make great choices, and as a female PhD scientist myself, this was cringeworthy to watch. Also, why we are referring to females as "honey" all the time also makes me want to gag.
This book was almost a five for me. the writing style was very good, the pacing, the many details that were slowly unraveled. the only thing that i didn't like was the overly long/dramatic ending, sure the person has to be crazy for it to work but it was too over the top and took away from the way the rest of the book . will check out other books from this writing pair though
In Case of Emergency is a book that will having you wondering what is going to happen next. Can imagine your contact information being found in the In Case of Emergency section of a complete stranger? How surprised would you be & what would you do when you realize....you may be a suspect as well. Great pace with plot surprises to make everyone happy!
Thank you Dutton Books for a copy of In Case Of Emergency for review.
I wish I had better things to say about this one, but it was just ok. I didn't really connect with any of the characters and was therefore barely invested in the whole mystery. It came together ok, but the lack of character development really hurt my connection to it.
Full of suspense and cliff hangers that will keep you on the edge of your seat as you follow along wanting to know what was going to happen next, and what exactly happened in the past that led to the events that are currently going on. Who is "H" that Charlottetown refers to and what does he know about everything that happened before?
We are introduced to several characters in this book but it is easy to follow along with them all and keep them straight. I found the characters, at least most of them, to be quite interesting and endearing, and to be quite likeable. We are introduced to many characters from Charlotte's past, which for the most part are the most unlikeable characters in the book, but as you red along you will find out why. I really enjoyed reading from Detective Sylvestri's POV as I enjoyed his character in the novel and he was an interesting and straight forward person. I enjoyed reading from his perspective and his take on things.
With so many bodies showing up in this novel, and must of the evidence pointing towards Charlotte, it begs the question - is she responsible? And if not, why does it seem that it all is surrounding her somehow? Who is the murderer, why are the victims targeted specifically, and who is next? A highly active, fast paced novel that I highly recommend.
Drew me in from the first pages. a thriller with so many twists and turns.Charolette a neurosurgeon is a interesting character that kept me turning the pages late into the night.Highly recommend this book & authors,#netgalley#duttonbooks
In Case of Emergency is an addictive psychological thriller with plenty of twists and red herrings that will keep readers guessing. The story follows Charlotte whose life is imploding, but she has her online support group of trauma survivors there for her. And now Charlotte has Peter, her new boyfriend who has asked her to keep the relationship secret. This explains why Charlotte doesn't report his disappearance when Peter goes missing. But then weeks later, Charlotte gets a call to ID a body in the morgue that had her name listed as an emergency contact. Who is the body? How is she connected to Charlotte? What happened to Peter? Filled with plenty of action on top of the twists, readers will have a hard time putting this one down. If you're looking for a fast-paced psychological thriller, In Case of Emergency is a great one to check out. Highly recommended!
A quick summation of my feelings about In Case of Emergency: quick and easy read, far-fetched plot, forgettable.
Once again, we have an intelligent, career-driven female lead who is beyond gullible in her personal life. Most children would have made wiser decisions than she did. Charlotte's gullibility and ridiculous behavior grated on my nerves throughout the story.
Genre is far more "drama/mystery" than the promised "thriller."
The premise is intriguing but far-fetched. The police investigation feels amateur, and I just couldn't make the leap with the big reveal.
One thing that drove me crazy was the constantly repeated detail of Jane Doe having "listed" Charlotte as her "emergency contact." That sets a specific expectation for the situation. The fact is, Jane Doe only happened to have a card in her pocket with Charlotte's name on it. Like a business card. That's not anywhere near the same thing as listing someone as an emergency contact, and homicide detectives certainly would know the difference.
Also, why oh why did every character call every other character "honey?" 48 times. Yes, I counted.
In the end, there's not a lot for me to recommend. But I'm in the minority so far. You might love this book.
This was a great book. I had set a “get to bed” time for myself one night and of course hit a major plot point right before that, so there went the best intentions of a full night of sleep! I was really pleased with this book. The storyline moves at the perfect pace and the reveals and twists are excellent. Thank you Netgalley and Dutton for the ARC!
At first i didn't quite understand the title of this book. With everything that i was reading it didn't make sense really. Until the end... i can be a little bit slow sometimes :)
Good page turner, nothing too exciting but enough to keep going.
I like Charlotte as a character. Wasn't sure who the killer was.. it was good
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC.
A Psychological Thriller with Plenty of Red Herrings
Charlotte’s life has turned in a negative direction. Through the death of a patient she has changed her career from a neurosurgery resident to an acupuncturist and that isn’t doing very well. She shares office space with her friend Rachael, but Rachael seems distant and distracted. She has problems of her own.
Charlotte has a boyfriend, Peter, but she hasn’t seen him in three weeks. She’s worried, but hopeful he’ll return. Then she gets a call from the police to identify a body. She’s afraid it’s Peter, but when she arrives, the body is that of a woman she doesn’t know. The police have zeroed in on her because the woman had her information of a card to contact in case of emergency.
With no other suspects, the police zero in on Charlotte. She protests her innocence, but the identity of the woman makes them more sure that it’s Charlotte.
This is a rather complicated story told from several points of view: Charlotte, Rachael, and the police investigators. I found it interesting to look at the case from the various points of view. It added to the tension.
Charlotte has so many hangups it was hard to like her, but she was perfect for the suspect in the case. Rachael was easier to like, but the fact that she had her own secrets made her a difficult friend. The investigative team was tenacious in their pursuit of the solution. I enjoyed their interaction.
This is an action packed thriller that will keep you guessing.
I received this book from Dutton for this review.
This was a fast paced fluffy read full of twists, but don't go into it expecting much.
The main character is a neurosurgeon, yet she seemed exceptionally lacking in common sense and that bothered me.
🤷🏻♀️
The E. G. Scott writing team did an amazing job with this one! As someone who loves to go in blind to a book - this one left me wondering where this story would land. Character development was on point throughout this story and plot lines were well constructed to the point I fell asleep on the book rather than setting it down and going to bed. I didn't want to put the book down once I got into it!
In a book that grapples with tragedy, trauma, and how to continue life in the midst of those - the authors do a wonderful job making you care what is happening to these characters and leaving you questioning with whom your loyalties should lie.
It comes close to a 5 star read, but it has some elements that left me lacking on the character traits and stories. There were many subplots that are tossed in that aren't entirely relevant to the overall progression of the story and become a tad distracting, especially when they don't have a conclusive purpose in the end.
This had trouble as first keeping all the details in order. At times the jump around. But over all fantastic!
This book was so confusing I actually wondered if I was missing some of the pages! It jumped all over the place from one person to another and half the time I didn't know at first who was talking. The characters didn't seem very believable to me and the story was so wild and far-fetched I sometimes found it more laughable than thrilling. I'm puzzled why this is getting so many rave reviews. Maybe I AM missing pages! Disappointing.
A unique story line that contains some pretty unique characters. EG Scott has given us Charlotte, a woman who has had to start her life over and is still not quite sure where this new road will take her. Her life takes a definite turn when she's listed as the emergency contact for a woman she does not know. She learns this disturbing fact when she is asked to identify a body....that's right....the unknown woman is now a dead body and Charlotte is now a suspect in a murder. Along the way to solving this mystery, Charlotte takes the police on some wild adventures and keeps we readers trying to catch up. A fast paced, entertaining book that I enjoyed immensely.
