The premise of this book was interesting. A med student turned acupuncturist/natural healer is the emergency contact of a woman found dead. When Charlotte, the main character, is asked to identify the woman, she realizes that she doesn't know her. This is where the mystery begins. Why does this woman have Charlotte's name and number? Is she connected to Charlotte's troubled past in some way? This is definitely a legal thriller with some psychological thriller aspects. Personally, I was not satisfied with the ending because I felt that there were too many things left unexplained. However, the person who I thought was the "bad guy" was not so I do credit the authors with their ability to effectively mislead the reader and write such an unpredictable story.

3.5 stars rounded down.
In Case of Emergency was a fast paced, intriguing story which kept me turning pages. I loved the unique premise...being called to the morgue to identify a body you've never seen before, because you were, oddly enough, listed as the emergency contact.
The red herrings were well done, the characters were decently developed, and I really enjoyed the descriptions of alternative (Eastern) medicine, which I utilize myself. I do feel there were too many narratives...I don't believe we needed points of view from both detectives, for instance. It definitely muddied the flow.
The conclusion, too, wasn't a love match with me. While I didn't figure out the antagonist, which is always a great thing, I did feel the big reveal was pretty far-fetched...as were the reasons given for all the death and chaos which ensued.
Further, I found Charlotte, the main character, annoying. For a hot-shot neurosurgeon, she certainly was gullible. And why in the world did every character use the endearment, "honey?" It was utilized so frequently throughout the story, it quickly became distracting and irksome.
Final thoughts: If you're looking for a quick, action-packed, easy read...this is a good, though somewhat problematic, option.

**My sincere thanks to NetGalley and Dutton for my review copy. It's always appreciated.
What if someone you didn’t know listed you as their emergency contact? And what if that person was murdered?
Charlotte is a neurosurgeon turned acupuncturist. She is navigating her way through a failing business and difficult relationship when she gets called to identify the body of someone she has never met.
This one has a good number of twists and turns and I honestly couldn’t have guessed the ending if I had tried. The pace was quick and engaging and I’d recommend this to anyone who likes domestic thrillers. My only point of contention was that there were four pov’s, which felt like a lot—especially because two of them were of the detectives investigating the case. These two felt so similar that I didn’t bother trying to distinguish them from each other. Other than that, this was a solid read.
4/5 stars!
This was a great book! You definitely feel the different views to be a little muddled, I wish they had been more defined, maybe with a little more character development and Introduction but otherwise it’s a good story! And I didn’t call the end like I usually do! 😉
In Case of Emergency is a thriller about Charlotte, her missing boyfriend, and a murder victim. Charlotte becomes the prime suspect after she is identified as the emergency contact of this murder victim even though she doesn't know who the victim is. Unfortunately, I did not find this story to be very compelling, especially since the characters were rather unlikable. Thanks to NetGalley for the free digital review copy. All opinions are my own.
This book was really enjoyable. For starters, E. G. Scott do great work setting up the suspense and confusion from the first page. What I found really interesting about their writing style was that they wrote from the first-person point of view for three different characters. It took me a little bit to get the hang of what was happening but it turned out to be quite insightful as we moved through the investigation. This look into each character's personal thoughts really helped me stay informed and in the know of the loopholes and elements of the mystery.
I loved the medical jargon that was spread throughout this book. The main character and murder suspect, Charlotte, has knowledge and background in both western and eastern types of medicine. The way the authors were able to bring those two together and create a sense of harmony between such different opinions was really cool. They also used the medical jargon in a way that didn't confuse me as the reader.
In Case of Emergency is a gripping and interesting murder mystery that is sure to keep you wondering and your mind reeling from the intro until the very end (I mean it, the VERY end).
I received a complimentary galley of IN CASE OF EMERGENCY by E.G. Scott for an honest review. Thank you to Netgalley and Dutton!
Charlotte is a woman in a precious point in her life. Her promising career as a doctor fell apart and she’s now trying to make ends meet as a acupuncturist in partnership with her best (and possibly only) real life friend. She has a mysterious boyfriend, though he is more absent than present, and an online trauma survivors group for group, but her new career is less than thriving and her worries about her now missing boyfriend weigh heavily on her.
Charlotte is called to identify a body found with her information as the in case of emergency contact, she fears the worst. She is therefore shocked to find that she has no clue who this woman is. Soon Charlotte realizes she has moved into the role of suspect and it feels like her life is falling even more apart. Told in multiple POVs between Charlotte, her best friend and the two detectives working the case, the investigation takes unexpected turns en route to the conclusion.
I enjoyed but didn’t love this thriller and I think a lot of that stems from the character of Charlotte who was a bit frustrating in her naivete. While she has been through something difficult in the loss of her career (something that isn’t fully explained until later into the book), it felt like a stretch to me that she wouldn’t have any suspicions over things like her mysterious boyfriend who doesn’t want anyone to know about him or the sudden loss of her friend group. She really has no one who seems to deserve trust, but still she trusts them all.
I did enjoy that there were some good twists along the way and that some of them did take me by surprise. I enjoyed following the investigators most of all as their skepticism of Charlotte’s story was most in line with my own. Still, there were a few things that I wanted them to investigate that seemed to be taken at face value or glossed over.
In all this was an enjoyable read, though not one without issues. It definitely brought an interesting premise and some twists along the way. IN CASE OF EMERGENCY is out on 8/4/2020!
Told in a multi-character POV with alternating chapters, In Case of Emergency is a tale of guilt, redemption, and revenge. Main character, Charlotte, is an acupuncturist with a hidden, painful past and previous career. She is written as a incredibly smart, educated character but is apparently willing to go along with a boyfriend's request to keep their relationship a secret which is supposedly for everyone's benefit due to his dangerous job.
When a woman is found dead with Charlotte's name in her hand, a chain reaction is set into motion for Charlotte to determine who the mystery woman was and why they are connected but hadn't met. An anonymous grief chat room, overly clingy co-worker/best friend, and a couple of detectives round out the main players in this thriller.
Entertaining but overall not very thrilling.
My second book by E.G. Scott, and definitely not my last! This is another twisted tale, which is sure to give you a bit of whiplash while reading! Unputdownable, riveting, fast paced, thrills and chills like an amusement park, and gasp worthy shocks! I absolutely love the twisted web weaved within this story and as it untangles, you get more shocks than you can imagine! Highly, highly recommend! This team must stay together and weave us more of these phenomenally twisted tales of suspense!
Will make sure to buzz around platforms and use my low Amazon reviewer number on release date!
Gripping, suspenseful and I was fully engaged. Great read! I enjoyed every page and character development was on point!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the e-ARC. In Case of Emergency has an interesting sounding plot that unfortunately fell flat for me. The story started slowly and I couldn’t connect with the characters, and wasn’t eager to find out what happened next. I normally devour mystery/thriller stories, this one just did not do it for me.
This was definitely a twist and turn book. Very different than I expected. I enjoyed the suspense and thrills!
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the authors, for an ARC of this book, in exchange for an honest review.
I thought this was a well written, interesting, exciting and unique mystery that had a complex plot and great characters. There was a lot of twists and the ending was a complete surprise.
I highly recommend this book and I would definitely read another book by these authors.
First, a thank you to Netgalley for sharing the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
What struck me so much about this story wasn't the mystery, but rather the author's ability to make me empathize with the main character in spite of her perpetuance for idiocy. For all her science smarts she's pretty stupid when it comes to human relations - yet, still I liked her. The book is well written and the mystery is solid, so it's definitely worth reading and loved The Woman Inside, so definitely will be purchasing this for my library and reading the author's next book.
If you’re looking for twists and unexpected revelations, read this book! It was gripping from the very beginning and made for an exciting read. This was my first E.G. Scott read, and will definitely add to my recommended author list. I am also finding myself interested in learning more about acupuncture...
This was an intriguing story that had me working to figure it all out the whole time. Acupuncturist Charlotte gets an unexpected call to come identify a dead body but she has never sene the woman before. Charlottes past seems to have come back to haunt her as the investigation heats up. Charlotte tries to find who she can trust - her best friend who’s been isolating her, her mysterious boyfriend who leads a double life, her distant mother, the detective who may believe she’s capable of murder, or her online support group. The suspense was well done the characters were well written.
I received an ARC of this novel from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
There are so many twists in this novel. Charlotte redefines her life after a professional tragedy. In her new life, she encounters ghosts from her past and struggles to come to terms with putting them to rest.
Charlotte has felt alone since her promising career in neuroscience fell apart. But she's found support via an online group for trauma survivors; her best friend, Rachel; and Peter, a mysterious new boyfriend who has asked that their budding romance remain a total secret.
That is why Charlotte is too scared to report Peter's disappearance to the authorities when he vanishes without a word.
Weeks later, police contact her to make an ID on a body and she fears it's Peter. Who else could it be? Instead, the deceased woman is a complete stranger. But relief is fleeting, when Charlotte realizes Jane Doe had Charlotte listed as her emergency contact, making Charlotte a person of interest in the death.
In Case of Emergency is a fascinating, fast-paced mystery with compelling characters. I recommend this novel for fans of mysteries and suspense.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC. The opinions in this review are honest and my own.
This book is a psychological thriller about Charlotte, a former neurosurgeon who is contacted by police about a murder victim. The victim was found with a card that stated that Charlotte was to be called in case of emergency. The problem is Charlotte has never saw or heard of this woman. How does the murder and the secrets of Charlotte’s past and her mysterious boyfriend all tie together. I enjoyed this book and it kept my attention with its twists and turns. Thanks Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
I really liked this mystery...it was different and had a very unique premise.
In Case of Emergency is about a neurosurgeon who is forced to quit medicine after a tragedy. She is now an acupuncturist and alternative healer. When she becomes implicated in a murder, her past as a surgeon comes back to haunt her.
This book had tons of twists and turns. It kept me guessing until the end. Really great story.
