A delightful narrative with sharp characterisation and a witty tone, coupled with a satisfyingly twisty mystery and the unusual setting of an exclusive retirement village. Highly recommended!

I love Richard Osman. I enjoy all his shows on tv, follow him on Twitter and always think he seems to have a great sense of humour. So when I saw he had written a novel, I was so excited to read it. I felt sure it would be witty and smart and a joy to read. This is why it pains me so much to say that actually, I ended up feeling quite underwhelmed after I finished reading The Thursday Murder Club. I didn’t fall in love with the characters, any of them actually. I thought the way they got their hands on information regarding the murders was all a bit contrived and convenient. I actually listened to the audiobook, and although it was well narrated, the story didn’t draw me in or leave me desperate to hear more. It was a pleasant enough listen, but ultimately disappointing as I’d expected so much more. I hate leaving negative reviews, and I know loads of people loved the book and it flew up all the charts, but I have to be honest, and for me, it was a bit of a disappointment. After looking forward to its release for much of the year, I don’t think I’ll be doing the same with book two. It really was just an ok read for me, I’m sad to say.

I had really high expectations for this novel but I have to say it didn’t live up to them

I thought this was going to be more of a 'thrilling' and 'exciting' murder mystery but it wasn't. It definitely was more of a slow burning cozy read

However, the characters in this book felt really flat. They weren't funny and they were quite hard to distinguish between each other.

The actual murder mystery was okay. But I did get a bit lost/ started to lose interest as the book went on
Not a thriller more of a long drawn out affair

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman is a refreshingly original murder mystery. He has created interesting and complex characters, most of whom are in the twilight years of their lives. It’s a simple premise whereby the residents of a retirement village set about investigating and solving a series of murders. Although I enjoyed the book, it was never unputdownable and I could have left it unfinished. Nevertheless, enjoyable to read.

I am impressed by the quality of the writing and look forward to reading more from the author. My thanks to Netgalley and Viking, part of Penguin Random House Publishers for the opportunity to read this book.

Waht a fantastic romp of a novel with a peaceful retirement village as the setting for four unlikely friends to meet up every Thursday to investigate unsolved killings. But when a local propert dealer ends up dead after speaking to the inhabitents the previous day the four realise that they should get involved. So we learn that Elizabeth through a few tantalising flashbacks was a spy and has many contacts. Joyce was a nurse now a widow with a high-flying daughter. Ibrahim was psychiatrist who even in his eighties and retired has clients seeking his advice. Then there is Ron a retired Union man who has spent his life dealing with disputes and still fancies himself as a self appointed leader but who is proud of his ex-boxer son Jason. As the body count mounts Donna the local policewoman who is befriended by the Club and her boss Chris are pulled into the group's discussions and actions.
A great first novel that has you laughing out loud at the antics of the group, a really enjoyable tale.

I was interested in this book because I've always liked Richard Osman's gentle humour in his TV and radio appearances. I found this book to be filled with characters that were equally charming and amusing. Osman has a knack for creating characters which are relatable and entertaining to spend time with, which was a large part of why I enjoyed this book.

The story revolves around a group of pensioners in a luxury retirement village that like to pass the time be investigating cold murder cases. When the murders start to occur closer to home it sparks them into life and they show that older people are more than capable of solving crimes, often better than the law enforcement officers that are working on the same cases.

If I'm honest, I don't particularly like this genre of story and therefore it was always going to be a stretch for me to love this story. The whodunit elements of the story left me cold, not because they were poorly done but because I don't have much interest in the intricacies of criminal investigations. I did really enjoy the writing and the characters even if the crime element felt a little bit slow paced at times, the book was a lot of fun and I can imagine the Thursday Murder Club will feature in plenty more books to come.

Honestly, the funniest, most comedic murder mystery I've ever read. I thought this was definitely worth the read, and I'm already planning on buying it as a gift for my Mam. The characters are all fantastic and the storylines they follow are so cleverly written. It kept me guessing throughout and it was so enjoyable.

I so enjoyed this book! A really smart setting, bringing the crime to a fabulous retirement village where one could make assumptions about the residents. Witty and well Observed, the novel highlights the importance of community and allowing the elderly a place in society as well as just being a fantastic crime fiction novel.

This cosy murder is full of exciting characters (I particularly loved Donna and Elizabeth), shady characters (Ian and Tony stand out in my mind here) and Richard Osman's well-known and loved humour. His quirky quips interweave perfectly with a gripping and entertaining read. I will for sure be on the look out for the sequel when it appears.

Had heard a huge amount of praise for this book but wasn't really sure what to expect.

4 elderly residents in a residential village for the elderly......their shared interest of investigating past murder cases is the topic of their weekly group meet in the Thursday murder club.
However there are soon 2 murders literally on their doorstep so what better than a real case to investigate.
They join a very unlikely link with P C Donna who has recently moved to the area and DCI Chris, single, over weight and lonely. By the sharing of information this group of combined amateur and professional sleuths work together to solve the case.

This book includes dry humour as well as some deep but quirky characters. It also tastefully looks at struggles the elderly face as they begin to lose their loved ones.

Well worth a read.

This was an excellent crime novel. I liked the range of characters it followed as it offered an array of types to follow. The writing was good but it wasn't mind blowing amazing, but overall i did find it easily readable. This could be a good series if the other books are like this one.

Smart, warm and very entertaining. While it's not the first book to feature a group of pensioners forming a detective team, it's very well done and kept me hooked throughout. A perfect lockdown read that I'd recommend to any murder mystery fan

The crack team of octogenarian detectives you didn’t know you needed! When murder comes to the countryside just outside Tunbridge Wells, Ibrahim, Ron, Joyce and Elizabeth switch their attention from cold cases to ones where the bodies are just a little warmer. And like their suspects, and their reluctant police officer sidekicks, the members of Thursday Murder Club have secrets of their own… I loved this and read it in an afternoon. It’s warm but never mawkish, grisly without being gory, and it reminds us that the secrets we keep sometimes need to be shared.

Charming, funny, and very clever!

A murder mystery with a refreshing difference -- Osman is, above all, an acute observer (and occasionally satirist) of the British and their ways, and that elevates this book high above the often plodding murder mystery genre of today.

Delightful, and highly recommended!

Hmm what can I say. Not my usual kind of read but with all the hype, a celebrity author and a storyline that’s made for a movie/TV I was keen to make a start on it in return for an honest review. I must admit I started it dubious that I was going to like it. Thursday Murder Club is Richard Osman’s debut novel, well known for his career in Pointless and a creative director and producer of many other shows, the novel held so much promise. However I found it lacking, more like the novel the movie Cocoon was based upon or a spoof police action show. The scene revolves around a retirement village, the occupants, the owners and the police investigating crimes committed. Four residents finding they have little to occupy their time have formed the Thursday Murder Club bringing together their life skills, resourcefulness and devious plotting. A major crime is committed and along with many other minor mysteries the club’s mission is to find the truth gathering in other characters along the way. I can’t say I enjoyed it and wouldn’t go out of my way to see the resulting movie should it ever be produced but I did like the fact there were strong female characters leads and this was a highlight for me.

Thanks to Netgalley, the author and publishers for a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

I loved this! The four main characters of the Thursday Murder Club were fantastic and very lovable, and I also loved the two main police officers and their dynamic together but also with the four members of the Thursday Murder Club. There were a lot of twists and turns in the story, and I found that some things were guessable (or at least that some of the red herrings were guessably red herrings) and some things weren't, which is how I like crime books to be. No fun if you can guess the whole thing from the beginning but also no fun if you couldn't guess any bits of it all and the ending is a complete surprise. Although some of the themes are actually quite dark, there is a light-hearted humour throughout that makes it very readable.

Overall this was an engaging and entertaining read that I think would appeal to a lot of readers (will probably be buying a copy for my parents to read as I'm sure they will love it). I'll be keeping an eye out this time next year for the next one!

I loved the whole 'retirement home' friendship of the main characters in this book and the fact it has lots of humor even though having a dark 'murder' undertone. The books carries itself well with likeable characters and plenty of giggles but really tugged on the old heart strings at times, with it's predictability of the fact that, as humans, we all have the same ending. It was a great read by, new to the book writing scene, Richard Osman and would love to get to read some more of his books and i thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope i am as sprightly as some of the folk in this book when i am older :)

I would highly recommend this book

A group of over 70s meet every Thursday and work through crime scenarios until they are faced with a real murder. It's a lovely book with lots of twists and turns, plus, it's hillarious. Everyone needs an Elizabeth in their life.

Excellent, presumably debut, novel from Richard Osman. Not sure what I was expecting, but I got a very funny, slightly twisted story of remarkable geriatrics refusing to be daunted by time or infirmity. More Agatha Christie than Lee Child I'd say... But that's not a bad thing.
Just lacked a little sparkle for me which is why I hold back a star. But it's very funny (and very clever) with enough twisty plot developments to keep it interesting. Read for yourself. Highly recommended.
