The Best Laid Plans sounds intriguing to me because a) it's a childhood-friends-to-lovers kind of story, which is my top favorite trope, and b) the characters are quite hilarious and full of colorful personality. Hence, I have high hopes for this book but to my disappointment, the entire story turns out just meh. What I love most about this book is probably its cover and the beautiful font on it. I'd certainly pick up this book simply judging from the cover and for that, I believe the publisher has great marketing strategy for this one. Aside from the cover, the main characters lack the chemistry I'm looking for in contemporary romance novel; thus, I find it pretty difficult to fully relate to them, however much I'd love to experience their first times. What's worse, I end up skimming through the rest of the book since I lost interest quite early in the story. All in all, I wish I could enjoy this book as much as others' do. If you wanted to give this book a shot, please do, and I hope it's more of your cup of tea.

***Thanks to the publisher for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.***

I was really excited to get my hands on Cameron Lund's debut novel. Anyone who knows me knows that best friends-to-lovers is my kink. My kryptonite. My Achille's heel. My fatal flaw. And everytime I see a book that promises it, I smash that mf want-to-read button and count down the days to the publication date.

I'm hesistant to say that I was disappointed with this book because I really wasn't; it was cute and fun, and I enjoyed reading it quite a bit. That said, I went into it with pretty high expectations, so when it was only just good, I consequently felt let down. I think part of that stems from my having mostly outgrown the YA genre, barring YA fantasy. I just get too fed up with the petty high school drama that contemporary YA fiction inevitably includes, which seems so extra, played-up, unrealistic, and at odds with the real high school experience--or, at least, my own.

Although I had major qualms with Keely's using Andrew to get experience (this seems to be such a thing-to-do in YA fiction; do people actually do this IRL?), I thought that the pressure that Keely feels to keep up with her peers and not be left behind was well-portrayed, conveying universal, relatable feelings that I think almost everyone, both male and female, has felt at some point in their teens and/or early adulthood. I know that I sure as hell have felt them myself, and it was nice that this novel dealt with these feelings head on, with a sex-positive message that also emphasized personal readiness.

Overall, I was pleased with the book and would probably read future books by the author, if I decide to continue reading contemporary YA fiction.

Lund’s debut is a bright one. She captures the voice of her high school protagonist perfectly and delivers a story that delves into the topic of sex and virginity in a new and refreshing way. I loved the dynamic between the two best friends in this book, and the dialogue felt so real. A very strong debut from an author to watch!

The Best Laid Plans by Cameron Lund seems like it will be the next great YA love triangle rom-com and after reading the first impression I definitely can't wait to read the rest! The characters are fun and I can tell this would be such an enjoyable read. I can't wait to read the rest of this book soon!

So this was just a excerpt but I loved it so much I ordered the book! To be a teen again! The thing I liked about this book was the how it captured the essence of being a teen and the pressures they feel. I can't wait for the book to come!

Holy freaking moly. This was a "read now" option and I jumped at the chance to read it. Unfortunately for me, I didn't realize it was only a sneak peek. But the first six chapters are amazing. I always had such pride in being a virgin in high school, so I don't love the glorification of no longer being a virgin. HOWEVER, I know it's the actual plot of the story and I'm hoping that the story takes a smart approach to the direction it goes. I do really like the characters so far, though Keely very much has a "woe is me" personality, which is liking to get annoying. But again, I really like the story so far - it's easy to read and so quick to get through! I absolutely need to get access to the rest of the story!

I got the opportunity to read a sneak peek of The Best Laid Plans by Cameron Lund.

The story starts off with a bang. The plot is perfectly awkward and hilarious. As a teen, these situations would make me squirm, but as an adult I can look at them, enjoy them, and laugh. I connected with the characters quickly over our shared love of Hitchcock and classic movies. I also could relate to the character’s want to try the bigger world, after living in a smaller town. Andrew is my favourite character. Even though he is with someone at the start, I cannot wait to see how the story plays out.

I enjoyed the preview so much, I ordered a copy for myself.

I received an electronic sneak peek through NetGalley. All opinions are 100% my own. Thank you, Penguin Group Young Readers, NetGalley, and Cameron Lund.

I received a small portion of this book to review and from what I’ve read so far I’ve enjoyed it. I can’t really say much about the entire book though because I only received a small portion.

Received a sample of this book and really liked it from what I've read. Enough to buy the book once it came out so that's a good sign.

This was only a sneak peek of The Best Laid Plans, but it certainly made me eager to read more of it. I can sense a very promising story with just a couple chapters that caught my attention right away. Looking forward to reading a full copy of the book and seeing what happens next!

The Best Laid Plans started with Keely’s birthday party, organized by her best friend Andrew at his home that ended with only other virgin girl from Keely’s friend circle losing her virginity. Now Keely was only virgin left in high school and everyone including Keely were making it big issue. Apparently parents found out about party and as punishment they told Andrew and Keely to find a job for summer before college start. Andrew secured one at his uncle’s office that left Keely finding one for herself with help of Hanna- her second best friend. Luckily they found a sign of employee needed at video store where the hottest college junior of the town worked.

From first 6 chapters I read and from synopsis, I can tell where this was going, how messed up and complicated it will get. Probably this is friends-to-lover trope and is about Keely’s plan to get laid before college starts.

I liked Hanna and Andrew. Danielle was not likable. She was proud and didn’t value her friends. I didn’t like her comment on virginity. She said “virgin in college is like having a disease”, just because she now regretted losing it and didn’t even noticing it was making Keely uncomfortable. It was strange Keely felt so insecure and left out in these initial chapters. I understand her doubts and question but at the same time I wish she didn’t think it as something one should achieve before attending college. I hope there is development in rest of the book and she realize it shouldn’t be a checkbox in list and understand love and respect should come first.

So far, The Best Laid Plans sounds interesting and entertaining YA contemporary romance. Star prediction for this book – 4.

This book has one of the best opening lines I've ever read. The Best Laid Plans started strong and continued through the six chapters I read. I really enjoyed this preview, and I plan on picking the full novel up.

I enjoyed the strong voice of the MC in this extract. Strong and funny, very relatable. It's also nice to see the typically male virginity-quest narrative with the tables turned. By the end of the extract I was intrigued and definitely keen to read on.

Im sad this wasnt a longer sneak peek!

We follow 18 year old Keely as she finishes school and is about to go off to college. She can’t wait to get out of her small town. She loves it, but she wants something more. Her best friend Andrew throws her a birthday party while his parents are out of town and she walks in while another friend of hers is hooking up with a girl from school. And she realizes.....now she’s the only virgin in her friend group. Her friends have all grown up around her and she’s feeling left behind and immature in a way. Andrews parents find out about the house party and as their punishment, they are both forced to get jobs until they go off to college.

I can’t wait to pick up where I left off!

This was a super cute, super sweet romance. Keely is in high school and isn’t interested in the boys at her high school. She then meets Dean, a college Junior and falls for him hard. Will she be able to be in a relationship or fall for someone else along the way? I loved the friendship dynamic of this book. It was so cute and I wanted more.

I was skeptical about this book from the moment that I first saw it mentioned and was able to read the synopsis but I decided to give it a chance by reading the 60 page preview that was available to me. Before I started reading I felt like the book could go one of two ways, it could be the sex-positive rom-com-esque book that the beginning of the synopsis described or it could go the way of the rest of the synopsis in which virginity was taken way too seriously and the whole thing began to border on a weird competitive nature in which virginity was looked at as something negative.

Unfortunately, in the excerpt that I read it leaned towards the latter of those two. I think that there were a lot of opinions put forth in this beginning section of the book that could have a negative impact on younger readers. A lot of the side characters put forth misogynistic and slut shaming points of view and it left a bad taste in my mouth considering this book puts forth so many claims to be sex positive. I was also disappointed that from the very beginning it's basically written in stone that being a virgin by the end of high school is a bad thing. It hurts to read that opinion because it's perfectly normal to be a virgin leaving high school, whether or not you have sex as a teenager does not define you but this book seems to say anything but. I also was left feeling quite uncomfortable with the fact that one of the love interests is in college. This is something that I've noticed takes place in quite a few young adult books, that there's a female main character that is in high school that falls for someone in college. Not inherently bad, but still makes me uncomfortable, especially when the pair didn't already know each other in high school.

Now I don't want to say that this book is all bad because I only read the first 60 pages but I can say that I will not be willingly seeking out the rest of the book to read. If it so happens to fall into my lap I will give the rest of the book a chance but from what I've read I was quite disappointed.
