The strange layout I got of this ARC (Kindle version) made for a strange decrypting experience while trying to read this, so instead of learning and appreciating the wisdom of these chapters, it was a bit of an uphill battle to even decipher the different parts and make up for how they bled into each other

It was hard to follow this edition. On the good side, I liked the translation and how the messages hanged a bit compared with other editions. It is challenging, but there is so much truth and wisdom in each page that I re read some of them. It was great!
However, my main problem is with the comments. I found the commentary erratic and bad edited, which is my main problem with the book. I guess many would be interested in why James Legge translated the text as he did, because he explains and comments on it for every verse/chapter, but why not to provide then the original Chinise text, say, at the end of the book? It would have made sense to have those Chinese characters in the comments, because it doesn't add anything for the reader unfamiliar with the language.
Also, the quotations were messy, and I couldn't understand who Legge was referring to until almost half of the book. We just get a ton of names, numbers, dates, and even quotes in German and Latin that add nothing if you're not familiar with those languages. It was bothersome and made me lose interest several times during the reading, so I started to skip the comments entirely.

I have wanted to read Tao Te Ching for a long time. The translation from Chinese to English is good and the verses are understandable. The commentary by the author at the end of each verse is enlightening. I wanted a lot more commentary but that's just me. Maybe you want to read it in the original form and meditate on each verse.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley.

Always an excellent read if you love philosophy and inner self discipline. I enjoy Tao Te Ching and so does my whole household.
Thank you to the publisher.

This translation by James Legge was originally published in 1891 and has remained one of the more popular ones ever since. The current edition is unabridged, including Legge's commentary after each verse/chapter, and available in a hardcover gift edition with a simple but gorgeous cover. The commentary elaborates on the meaning and message, discusses references or relations to other sections of the Tao Te Ching and sometimes to other works of literature, historical or cultural context, and includes notes about the translation or any ambiguities.

I wanted to learn about the Tao, but unfortunately this book was difficult to understand. I thought there would be a modern day commentary about it which would help explain the Tao teachings but I misjudged the book.

There will be a lot of people who understand it, but I found it too abstract.

Had trouble with the flow of this one. My Chinese is limited, so decided on an English translation. Found the flow choppy and at times hard to follow. Ended up skimming a bit, and could not finish. Sorry. Could just be me. Expected something that wasn't there. If you know the work, you may enjoy it, so would recommend, but if you are new to it...
