Having more than one cat in a household changes everything, and this is THE book for the multi-cat home. The author goes deep into both the instinctual behaviors and power dynamics at play, with suggestions on how to handle them, as well as many of the products on the market that can help. Some suggestions can seem counterintuitive, but are worth a shot.

An excellent resource for cat parents, especially those experiencing difficulties in a multi cat household. Although there are many books addressing cat behavior already written, including the original version of this title, there are still many new facts and techniques to be learned for helping cats get along. In this newly updated version of the title, author and cat behaviorist Pam Johnson-Bennett introduces newer concepts such as Pandora Syndrome, related to cats’ urinary tract health, and fear free training, a relatively new program for handling pets in a more suitable and gentler way. A must read for cat parents!
I was perusing an older edition of this book when I learned a new edition was being published, so I knew I had to check it out! This is a truly excellent resource for cat owners and foster families. Even if you have just one kitty living with you or nearby, the information in this book will help you take care of your furball and understand why they’re so weird sometimes. Remember: cats are not dogs and never assume they’ll react the same way. I thought I knew quite a bit to help my cat with his aggression, but it turns out there was a little more to learn. Now, we have a happy, but still slightly crazy, home.
While most of this was already pretty familiar to me having had 2 cats who haven't always gotten along for the last 13 years, much of what was in here is very helpful information. My 2 cats had major issues about 7 years ago after moving to a much smaller space and dealing with an outdoor cat I couldn't control tormenting them through the windows. I learned much of what is talked about in this book on my own just by having the right instincts and taking the time to get them through it and redirect their fear. If I had had this book back then it would have helped me immensely to manage not only their situation but my own worry about what would happen. The author offers very clear, precise, and do-able solutions to lots of different issues and causes of those issues.
I did learn a few new things and while my cats are old now and no longer have the same energy to take out their anxiety on one another, they still show some passive aggression and I learned a few things that will help me understand them better.
Highly recommend this book for cat owners, especially new ones.
I think this is one of those books that should be a mandatory reading for cat owners. I personally have two cats so obviously I'm the intended audience. In fact, I adopted the second one relatively recently and they are still at that adjustment phase, so I was really excited about this book. It's a reference book, not a novel, so I generally would suggest buying it and looking for the applicable issue and not reading it cover to cover as a lot of the described problems will not be applicable to your particular household.
I think it's a great book for cat lovers and owners. I am a big fan of Jackson Galaxy and his book Total Cat Mojo, so I can't help but compare. It seems these two authors agree on almost everything in terms of cat-handling. I learned some new information from this book as well that I am excited to practice with my kitties.
One thing I would add is that I wouldn't have ended on the euthanasia note. Just seems like a more uplifting ending would've been better.
