Such a great book and so well written, I absolutely loved the entire story! I didn’t realize there was a historical component to the book and thought it was just a work of fiction when I started. As I got deeper into the story I was fascinated by the pieces of history that were woven into this narrative. I found that the author really hooked me and kept me interested, making this one of my more favorite books.
Special thanks to #netgalley #SummerontheBluffs for the opportunity to access this book as an advanced readers copy.
I think this would be the perfect beach read! I liked the pace that it moved, and the setting was beautifully described. I received a free copy of this book from netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
This one just wasn't for me - I tried to read it multiple times but just didn't connect with it. Thank you for the opportunity to read and review. I'm sure many will enjoy this one but sadly I did not.
I read this book because it was a BPL Book Club choice and I was so glad I did. It takes a little while to figure out all the characters and how each in interwoven into each other and the book does skip around through time, but if you stick with it, the reward is a really intricate story that is very interesting. I loved Amelia and Omar and also what they did for the three girls--although it was not till the end that the reader finds out why those girls were chosen I also loved the bond the girls shared. An additional bonus for those of us from New England is that we can "identify" places and experiences of Martha's Vineyard and identify with them.. Amazon has this book as "Summer Beach Book #1--does that mean that there will be a continuation of their story?
3.5 Martha’s Vineyard Stars
Another book set on Martha’s Vineyard! Specifically, Oak Bluffs, an exclusive black beach community. This one features the ultra-successful couple Ama and Omar and we learn about their successful New York lives and summers and weekends spent at the beach.
Ama and Omar have quasi-adopted three girls and they’ve helped pay for their education and brought them to Oak Bluffs for summers. We learn the stories of each of the girls and how they are finding their own identities. There are romances for each of them, some easier than others!
Now Omar has died and Ama brings the girls together for one last summer at the beach house, determined to gift the house to one of them. She explains to each girl about why they were chosen and the secrets that threaten to tear their non-traditional family apart.
There is a bit of a back-and-forth timeline and lots of characters in this one. It was definitely a peek into the world of the wealthy. I think this would make a good beach read!
Courtesy of Netgalley I received the ARC of Summer on the Bluffs by Sunny Hostin. This heartwarming story is set in the exclusive black community on Martha's Vineyard. This story focused on the accomplished Ama,
known as the Wizard of Wall Street, and the three goddaughters that she and her husband informally adopted. Now talented adults, these women are spending a fateful family summer together, each hoping to inherit Ama's special summer home. Be prepared for complex characters, cultural references, secrets and revelations!
Summer on the Bluffs by Sunny Hostin is a good story. When I first started reading it, it did seem a little unorganized and took some time for me to get my bearings in the story.
Ama and Omar are wealthy African Americans who own a beautiful house on Martha’s Vineyard. There is a part of Martha’s Vineyard where famous and wealthy people of color reside. That was new to me and I enjoyed learning more about that.
Ama and Omar have 3 goddaughters-Perry, Olivia and Billie. Throughout this book, Ama and Omar and all of the girls stories are told.
Summer on the Bluffs is a debut novel. It is the first in a series. Again, it was good, but it was a little unfocused and unorganized. But there is potential for the series.
Thank you to #netgalley and #williammorrowbooks for the advanced e-copy of #summeronthebluffs .
Summer On the Bluffs is an intriguing story! I loved the book and had a hard time putting it down because I had to know more about Ama and Omar and the lives they led, not to mention to how they were connected to Perry, Olivia and Billie! The characters were relatable and I can't wait to read more by Sunny Hostin.
Thanks to William Morrow Books for an advanced copy of Summer on the Bluffs.
Set on Martha's Vineyard it's a book about relationships, family, hidden secrets and love.
Ama has worked hard to have a good life her and her late husband have a beautiful house in Oak Bluffs, an exclusive black beach community. Years ago they "adopted" 3 goddaughters and had them spend the summers with them. This year she's decided to have them all spend the summer and one of them will inherit the house.
Perry is a talented lawyer, Olivia is a Wall Street analyst following in Ama's footsteps and Billie is a marine biologist. Each of these sisters are facing their own issues and afraid that a secret she holds will hurt their chance of getting the house they ask want.
I love these strong, independent women. The writing is strong and I couldn't put this book down. Plus I love reading about Martha's Vineyard.
Summer on the Bluffs is set in Oak Bluffs an exclusive black beach community in the Vineyard. The novel is a story of three goddaughters that return to spend the summer with their godmother at the beach. At the end of the summer one of the goddaughters will become the owner of their godmother's cottage. This is a story of love, secrets, family and the search of happiness and belonging. I recommend this novel as it was a very enjoyable read.
In her debut novel Summer in the Bluffs, Sunny Hostin creates a fun read but with an in depth characters, deals with themes of heartbreak, love, outbof marriage pregnancy, interracial relationship, and gay relationship.
Tells the story of an affluent African America childless couple Ama and Omar, and their three "adopted" goddaughters, Billy, Olivia and Perry.
Besides these characters another main character is feature prominently throughout the book, Ama's house on Martha's Vineyard black community Oak Bluffs.
Along the way you learn about the lives and interrrelations of the characters and the hidden secrets that bind them thru the main protagonist Ama.
This book will leave you thinking about human relationships and what family means.
The setting for this book is Martha’s Vineyard where Ama and Omar have a summer home. They do not have any children but they do have three “goddaughters”.
The female characters in this book are very real....flawed, strong, independent and very fierce.
I enjoyed this debut novel that seems to the first in a series. Thank you for the early copy of this book.
Thank you NetGalley for this advance digital copy. I love watching and listening to Sunny Hostin, the author, on her talk show, so I was very happy to get to read this book. The book is about an African American power couple with an upscale lifestyle, who have no children, but they have three "goddaughters." The setting is Martha's Vineyard, which is fantastic, and the book is all about family, secrets, relationships and decisions. I liked the characters in this book, the descriptions of everything and look forward to more from Sunny!
I had mixed feelings throughout this whole book. The start was slow for me but I was interested just enough to keep reading. It definitely improved and the overall storylines of each of the characters was well written.
I wanted to like this but I guess I wasn't the target audience. Although I like references to artwork and designers in books I felt like it was way overdone in this story. Although i was somewhat intrigued by the story it didn't hold my interest enough to enjoy reading it.
Summer on the Bluffs is a refreshing and enjoyable book about relationships, family, love and secrets kept I loved the strong female characters, I found them very relatable. It’s a quick read that would be perfect for the beach.
I enjoyed this book. The author sets up a situation in which the reader knows there is a secret, but does a good job of not disclosing too much. Each story line has a different secret and some are more dramatic than others. The description of the u er wealthy and their lifestyle was sometimes a little overdone, but overall the book is very readable,
Many summer books take place in Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard, but this is the first that I have read set in Oak Bluffs, a traditionally African American community of well to do professionals. Ama and Omar are successful and wealthy, sharing their advantages as godparents with three young Black women, from New York City. Why these three women were chosen is not revealed until the last part of the book, but their stories include romances, secrets, challenges and colorism. Perry is the oldest, a successful lawyer, married to Damon. Olivia is on Wall street, following Ama’s path as the first Black woman on the trading floor. Billie, the youngest, is a marine biologist, hesitant to reveal that she is gay. The stories of these four strong Black female characters are absorbing, and I recommend this novel. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
Looking for a summer read. Then you have it in this novel Heartwarming and great debut novel by Sunny Hostin..
Summer in the Bluffs by Sunny Hostin is a very good novel about a set of complex characters that live summers on Martha’s Vineyard. It is a godmother and godfather along with three “adopted” goddaughters. Ama and Omar have chosen three girls from three different families and allowed these girls to live a life of luxury with them at their mansion on Martha’s Vineyard. Every summer, Billie, Olivia, and Perry live together in this beautiful mansion and make many wonderful memories. The girls are now grown and Omar has died. Ama, a powerful stock broker, has requested the three girls to come back to the Martha’s Vineyard home for one last summer. Ama is going to give the house to one of the three girls. How intriguing!! Love, romance, betrayal, pregnancy, biracial relationships, black heritage, and gay relationship are all touched upon in this novel. Not only did I enjoy the novel but now I want to go to Martha’s Vineyard and see where this story took place. . I would like to thank HaroerCollins Publishers and netgalley along with Sunny Hostin and Veronica Chambers for allowing me to read this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
