GBI Will Trent and medical examiner Sara Linton investigate a brutal murder that is like one from decades before. Along with Will's partner, Faith Mitchell, Will decides to reopen the old case with new info from a current prisoner. If true, the crazed killer is still out there. The story also implicates Sara's late husband, Jeff Tolliver, in a police coverup.
The inclusion of Tolliver brings up memories for Sara, and the relationship between she and Will is in jeopardy.
This is another five-star read in an already excellent series.
Karin Slaughter is one of my "go to" authors, so I'm always excited to read her next book. I just discovered her in the past few years, so I haven't read all of the Grant County and Will Trent novels, but I have become pretty attached to Sara Linton and Will Trent. Slaughter does such a good job developing her characters and making us care for them despite their many flaws.
This book has all the hallmarks of a good KS novel - graphic violence against women, a fast-paced plot, and a little romance thrown in for balance. The shifts between the past and the present were easy to follow and it was nice to get more details about the backstory of Sara and Jeffrey's relationship. I will say that I had a pretty good idea who the murderer was fairly early on, but it was still a great read. Clear your calendar because you'll be racing to the end of this one. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the digital ARC of this book.
Another great book from Karin Slaughter. It was hard to keep track at times of whether it was in the present or past, but an overall terrific book. Sara and Will are great together and the flashbacks with Jeffrey brought the characters full circle. Can't wait for the next one!
Oh this book. Karin Slaughter seems incapable of writing anything that I don’t love.
I digress.
This book made me add the entire Grant County series to my list. It interweaves characters from both the Will Trent and the GC series impeccably. I’ve never read anything from either and I have a decent idea of who everyone is as a person and their backstory as well.
The book starts off with a prison riot where someone has been killed. Will Trent and his partner Faith are there to figure out what happened , along with Dr. Sara Linton, Will’s girlfriend.
In the process of interrogation, prisoner Daryl Nesbitt tries to make a deal by giving them a lead on a string of murders that until then has looked like accidents.
This throws us back 8 years to when Jeffrey Tolliver is Grant County police chief and the case of Rebecca Caterino, a college student found in the woods hurt and bleeding from what is assumed to be a fall.
But did she really just fall? Jeffrey doesn’t think so.
The switch between timelines is effortless and it wraps up perfectly.
I’m going to read everything and hope I like Jeffrey a little better. Though there were sometimes when I agreed with him, “sometimes justice needed a nudge”.
I cried at the end of this book! Only Karin can write a novel highlighting brutality towards women and throw in a tear jerker or two.
Loved. It.
I love Karin Slaughter’s books but this one while it had a good ending I grew tired of Sara and Will’s relationship drama. I also thought the crimes were too explicit in detail.
I’ve been a big Slaughter fan for a while now so obviously I had to scramble to read her latest. As always it was an entertaining story with lots of twists and turns that I didn’t see coming until the last minute. This one felt like an intense SVU episode and I loved it! There were times when Sarah and Will got on my nerves a little and I wanted their drama to calm down but other than that it was awesome! Thank you to Netgalley for sending this novel in exchange for an honest review.
How have I not read a Will Trent book before now. Didn't stop me from enjoying this disturbing mystery. The story develops into an investigation into a serial killer. Will and Sarah are working toward the same goal but different pasts influencing thier motivation.
Didn't love how close the killer was so involved to the oringal investigation and Sara not realizing the connection.
This was my first Karin Slaughter book, and I already can't wait to read her entire backlist.
I knew going into this book that Slaughter writes violent and gritty crime novels, and this one certainly delivered on that. Trigger warnings for murder, rape, child abuse, child molestation (not on page), necrophilia, death of a loved one, extreme violence/body gore.
It's clear from reading this book that characters and research are Slaughter's strong point. This was my introduction to these characters, who have all been around for many books at this point, but I found it so easy to catch on to their back stories and get pretty attached to them. I loved seeing the dynamic of Will and Sara's relationship in the present day, along with the dysfunction of Sara and Jeffrey's relationship in the past. I loved Will in particular-I feel like we didn't really see much of his personality in this book, but that could be because this is book 10 in the series and he's (presumably) been developed throughout those books. But, meeting him in this book immediately made me check out the first book in this series from the library, and I can see myself bingeing it and the rest of Slaughter's back list.
While the plot wasn't anything particularly new, I still thought it was so strong and intriguing, and I devoured the 18 hour long audiobook. I didn't at all see the reveal coming, and I thought it was brilliant how Slaughter built up the reveal through both of the timelines.
I'd definitely recommend picking this one up!
*Thanks very much to the publisher for providing my copy of the book via Netgalley!*
Go to author. Page turner. Compulsive readable and one I got hooked on from the cover to the last page. Loved it!
Great suspenseful crime thriller. I know fans of this genre will love the book. While it was a little long the plot was excellent.
I'm getting ready to age myself....but it is all for the greater good right?

In my early 20's I was obsessed with Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta novels. I mean OBSESSED. I have never found an author I could honestly say I enjoyed (in the criminal fiction genre) as much as Cornwell Well that changed with The Silent Wife.
.
I loved everything about this novel. The subject. The two separate timelines. The story line. The characters. Everything. The amount of research Slaughter put into this novel is staggering. It read so very believable. I could see watching this story on the ID channel. My only regret? Not starting from the beginning. I didn't know she had already written the characters until the note at the very end. Aside from the writing itself...this is probably the most obvious of the similarities between Slaughter and Cornwell. You can read them out of order and still adore the story.
.
I'm not going to speak on the book itself. You can get a very spoiler free idea from the synopsis alone.
.
Bottom line. This will be one of my favorite books this year. I can already tell you I will recommend it like crazy to anyone who enjoys a good criminal fiction novel.
Karin Slaughter pulls out all of the stops in her next book in the Will Trent series. This fast-paced book focuses on tracking down a serial killer targeting women. The MO is the same as a rapist locked up years ago, so Will Trent must work harder than ever to find the connection and the killer before any more women are attacked.
As Will gets deeper into the investigation, the man in prison points to Jeffrey Tolliver. Will Trent is Sara Linton's boyfriend. Sara was married to Jeffrey Tolliver, and as turbulent as their marriage was, Sara would still be with him now had he not been murdered. However, it is five years later and Will and Sara are going strong. For the man in prison to try and finger Jeffrey for the previous rapes is nothing less that disturbing for both Sara and Will.
This no doubt shakes whatever balance Sara and Will have right to the core. Long-held secrets come to play and the book then shifts to the past from years previously when Jeffrey and Sara found one another. Back in the present, the story deals with Will, Sara and Will's partner Faith facing a race against time to stop the current murders, all while striving to protect Jeffrey's memory.
This book is certainly not an easy read, although it is thoroughly compelling. In the last book of the Grant County series, Jeffrey died a hero. So with his name being tied to previous rapes brings in an incredible amount of angst. Meanwhile, the story also has another pivotal character, and that is Lena Adams. She was in the first series as a cop who worked for Jeffrey, but who had taken quite a turn.
Let me suggest that you read ALL of these books in order, from the very first book in the Grant County series, Blindsighted, all the way through Undone, and then beginning this series with Tryptich, through this book, The Silent Wife. It is an excellent investment in time, as the back stories in this series are critical to truly appreciating this most current book.
I do not know if or when there will be another book in this series, but I certainly hope so. The series are spectacular and I believe every reader of this genre needs to put every single one of these books on their radar.
Many thanks to William Morrow and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
Karin Slaughter consistently writes in-depth, exciting books and this definitely fit the bill. This is a part of a long-running series, however it reads well as a stand-alone too. The characters are authentic and well-drawn and the plot moves along quickly. I had the twist figured out early on, but this did not take away from my overall enjoyment.
** spoiler alert ** I received an #ARC of this book from #Netgalley and I am glad I had the opportunity to read it! This is part of the Will Trent series. The usual characters are in it- Amanda the boss, Faith Will’s partner, Sara Will’s love but what makes this story unique is that the author has a “then” and “now” plotline. In this we get to see Sara working a case with her former husband Jeffrey. Karin Slaughter always has a great plot that keeps me reading. One thing I really appreciate about her books are the crime and justice statistics she includes. I get to learn while reading her stories. I have a suggestion for the editor though. I figured out who the murderer was at 20% in. Having him sobbing oddly and one other detail should be downplayed. It stuck out and made me think- this might be the guy.
Karin Slaughter does it again with this on the edge of your seat Will Trent addition. You can feel Sara's pain and emotions in this one. A mystery involving girls going missing, old lovers, and new methods of torture both physically and emotionally. Trigger warning. This one hooked me till the end. #thesilentwife #netgalley
Karin Slaughter's latest in the Will Trent series - never disappoints. As a fan of anything Karin writes, another excellent book.
Somehow this author's work has escaped my attention until now, even though I love reading thrillers. Although I'm late to the party, I will add this author to my "must read" list immediately! This book is part of a series about a detective and a medical examiner, but the writing is so skillful that I didn't feel lost in the plot. The story moves back and forth between the past and the present, as the characters link recent rape/murders to similar past crimes. The sections describing the past include characters from another series by the author. It sounds very confusing but the author keeps everything clear and understandable. I was able to figure out the murderer just before the characters did. The author writes rather graphic murder scenes that I found intriguing rather than off-putting. The characters are well-drawn and felt true-to-life. I want to read more by this author and discover more about her characters. Thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins Publishers for providing an ARC.
*I am grateful to NetGalley for giving me an eARC of this book in exchange for my review. All opinions however, are my own"
I must say I absolutely LOVE Karin Slaughter and if the Will Trent or Grant County series was turned into a book series I would binge watch it to no end. The Silent Wife was no different. About 1/3 of the way into the book I figured out who the killer was, but it didn't detract from the suspense and the build up as Will and Sarah found out who it was as well. And she brought Jeffrey back in a way! My heart! *swoons*. I was thrilled with this one, and cannot wait until she comes out with another one in this series, although if she kills off Wilbur like she did Jeff, I will revolt!
This is typical Karin Slaughter, great read full of twists and a huge shocking reveal at the end! She is one of my favorite writers for thrillers.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an eARC of this book.
Very readable, edge of your seat thriller. It was many times a little too graphic for me but I couldn't put it down. Will and Sara are characters I could revisit again and again. Absorbing and never lagged despite its length.
