Bring Up the Bodies is the follow up to Wolf Hall. I gave the first book five stars but I loved this one even more.
In this novel, I was already familiar with the writing style, the setting and the characters, learning to understand her use of pronouns (when she said “he” it’s not always clear which he she means).
Hilary Mantel is a gifted writer and she improved her style here. The narrative is stronger and as Thomas Cromwell’s motivations and enthusiasm for achievement grow, so does this story. He was cunning, brilliant and ambitious.
Bring Up the Bodies is character driven and engaging, and the best historical fiction I have ever read.
“The things you think are the disasters in your life are not the disasters really. Almost anything can be turned around: out of every ditch, a path, if you can only see it.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is book #2 to Wolf Hall and it did not disappoint. Nice that it was less pages too. Henry VIII and his roving eyes lands on Jane Seymour. His marriage to Anne Boleyn is tense since she hasn’t given him a son heir and he enlists Thomas Cromwell, newly minted Master Secretary to the Privy Council, to dissolve their marriage.
I enjoy Anne’s tenacity and strength, though rumors began to spread her infidelity which ultimately cost her her life. Thanks to Henry Holt and NetGalley for a gifted copy. This is my honest review.
