les midèles sont charmants et tentants, mais j'ai ce livre sur liseuse, et suis complètement incapable de travailler ainsi ! Il faut absolument avoir cet ouvrage en version papier.

The first craft book I bought for myself (as a teen!) was about ethnic embroidery that was very similar to this one: embroidery that reinforced fabric by adding overlay threads to the weft. I don't have that long-ago book but in my memory that techniques were the same. Maybe that book was about kogin.

In times past when good needles and colored thread were expensive and hard to find, embroiderers could still decorate, repair, and strengthen fabric by using small amounts of thread to follow the natural flow of the weft and warp. A large eye needle or even a fine hook would do because no new holes were needed.

Patterns that follow warp and weft are fractal: curves are suggested by little steps. But patterns can be varied and enriched through color and texture variations.

This book will appeal to people who enjoy needle work. It might be good for people whose fingers are not as flexible as they used to be. With some judicious selection of projects and materials, I think this might be a good book for an older child starting out in needle crafts. Low frustration.

I struggled to follow along with this book because the digital formatting left much to be desired.

The projects weren't really up my alley and this seemed like something that I would rather search for inspiration on Pinterest than purchase an entire book of these small crafts.

I have been woefully lazy in doing anything creative with my time the past two months. I went through this book once and kept postponing writing a review until I actually tried out any of the projects. I then decided to talk of the book without the experience of actually having done the project but looking and admiring them instead.
This book is about a Japanese embroidery style called Kogin. I did not know such a thing existed till I picked this book up, but since then, I have seen mentions of it all over the place (which is how such things usually happen with me!). The instructions are simple, the requirements are listed out clearly and colourfully. The actual implementations of which I am not very capable of answering. The projects are all 'simple' as the title proclaims and are not supposed to take much time. I would recommend it to anyone looking to try a new craft or who have a working knowledge of Kogin.
I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.

This is a gorgeous book, and the author makes complicated designs seem approachable. The graphics and photos were beautiful and clear - definitely beginner friendly, however intimidating the finished projects may seem!

Kogin is a type of sashiko embroidery that has existed for hundreds of years, often being used to mend worn-out fabrics or add warmth to thin cloth. This technique has been adapted for modern tastes and learning styles in this book, using many high-quality photographs that a visual learner will appreciate. This book might be a little too advanced for someone who has never embroidered at all, but if you know at least some basics, you should be able to grasp the techniques and make something beautiful.

Thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to review a digital ARC in exchange for an unbiased review.

Beautiful and creative but not for the beginner, still it's amazing to look through the pages at the works of art. Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for allowinf me to read this book for free with no strings attached.

I’m a huge fan of arts and crafts and have been wanting to try embroidery for a while. Unfortunately, I didn’t get around to trying the projects as I didn’t have a chance to get the supplies. However, in terms of the actual book, I loved the layout of the pages, I thought the projects all looked really cute and it seemed easy to follow from what I could see. This would make a nice gift for a crafty friend along with the supplies for some projects!

I've been really enjoying the decorative mending movement, and while this book isn't on mending, it uses kogin, a style of traditional Japanese sashiko embroidery, for the stitching patterns on the projects in this book. The projects are sweet and fun- jewelry, coin purses, pouches, hair ties, ornaments, and household items. The instructions are well illustrated and easy to follow, from the initial how-to instructions on all things kogin, to the individual instructions for the projects. The projects are a great starting point for learning this craft, and are easily adaptable. A good book for someone starting out doing kogin, though some sewing skills will be needed for finishing the projects. Added bonus- the embroidery learned is a centuries old mending technique, so this book does double duty!

A lovely book and a fine introduction to kogin embroidery. The designs are lovely, and very decorative. Some remind me of Welsh tapestry.

This is a fantastic book! I loved reading the whole introduction which doesn't happen that often with craft books. It was so interesting and informative. I can imagine that I would refer back to it often.
The patterns in this book are wonderful. They are modern and so beautiful. Lots of great ideas of different ways to use finished embroidery that doesn't just involve hanging them in a hoop.
I would love to get the physical copy of this book and actually give some of the patterns a try (the kindle version didn't quite work for me and some pictures were missing as well as the charts).
I think that many of the projects would make beautiful Christmas gifts and are things that people would love to use, not just something to sit and look nice.
I am now very interested in finding out more about kogin so I think this may have started a new obsession!

This is a great update on traditional needlework. The projects are appealing and timeless. It would make an excellent addition to a textiles library.

Modern Kogin by Boutique-Sha is a collection of creative projects and patterns to learn embroidery. I picked up this book in as motivation to begin embroidering, myself.

Some of the designs I'm most excited to attempt are the geometric pattern barrettes, the button hair ties, and the login hoop art. I love learning about the Kogin and it's history. I also appreciate that the end of the book comes with full size templates!

I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Simple, every day items reimagined for the lover of counted thread techniques.. The use of easily found fabric and threads makes this accessible for most stitchers, regardless of location and proximity to specialist stores. Contains a nice, mixed selection of projects for all levels.

I love crafts and I’m always looking for more to try out, this book is really good because it explains in detail. It has pictures of the finished design and how it looks during the process of making it.
It’s informative and detailed whims has is great for first timer kogin people like me.

Kogin reminds me of cross-stitch where all the stitches are straight and not crossed. Love it!

The designs and patterns in this book are lovely! You can literally use them on any fabric that has even weave and then transform them into anything you like, aside from those found in the book (buttons, coasters, purses, bookmarks etc.)

Perfect for anyone who wants to try a new type of embroidery. Young children can learn this kind of stitching too as the patterns are mostly repetitive.

Thank you Netgalley and Zakka Workshop for the ARC. This is my honest opinion.

Beautifully laid out and easy to understand. Simple and clear instructions make this appropriate for any level. Modern designs with a certain amount of practicality. May try with my library patrons who love quilting and more traditional stitchery.

As a recent embroiderer but long term crafter I loved this book and the contemporary monochromatic style of the motifs and patterns in it.
It is a lovely guide to creating your own stylish Japanese inspired pieces and shows you how to make them into practical useable items like bags, purses, and bracelets as well as being beautifully decorative. The pieces in this book would make lovely gifts, but so would the book itself, for a keen needleworker or beginner to the medium, as the step by step instructions make it easy to get started!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me read an advance digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Easy to understand. Many pictures.
It was what I was hoping for! I'd love to keep this eBook copy for future projects but it seems like that I'd have to buy it some time.
The instructions are easy to follow and I like the little projects shown in the book. I like that the instructions don't consist of charts only but also show you how to sew together little fabric buttons etc.
If you're interested in learning how to stitch in Kogin style, this might be the book for you.

I loved the look of this book from the start- gorgeous pictures of cute projects that look perfect for some slow hand stitching. I’m familiar with sashiko but not with kogin so I appreciated the layout, with clear information about fabric, notions and tools needed. I also liked the staging of the projects, to lead the reader from simpler to more complex projects. It is difficult to offer an opinion on the patterns/templates in a PDF version but I thought they looked clear enough. I’m planning on buying a copy and getting started on Christmas presents!
