I’m a fan of Ms. Miller’s books and this one was a pleasant read. The first two books in the series were outstanding and this one was a little bland compared to those. Lord Elliot Haverford, Baron Ralston needs to marry a heiress to save his crumbling estates. His only choice is to marry this Season and he has set his sights on Lady Nina Trent whom he has admired for some time. Lady Nina is being pressured by her strict and cranky grandmother that it is her duty to marry well and make her brother proud. When Elliot comes up with a plan to help her catch the eye of the duke, she reluctantly agrees to his plan, but much to her dismay, she is beginning to think of Elliot and less about the duke. Can she tame this notorious rake and win his heart?
While there was some witty banter especially from Elliot, the plot moved along more slowly than I usually enjoy. Of course, there is a villain in the story and it turns out to be a nice twist, but not enough to win this book a higher rating than 3 stars.
I’m looking forward to Elliot’s sister’s story and hoping it’s the next one in the series.
I love historical romance books, I love reading about the ton, however while i didn't hate it, i didn;t love it, I just wish that it was a little faster pace, I like go go go and I think I lost the love in the pacing. Now we have a supposed Rake Elliot, Baron Ralston who needs a rich heiress to save his crumbling estate and wants Lady Nina Trent who is the one who caught his eye. In his mind he figures I will claim to help her catch the eye of Duke and have her really falling in love with him. Nina has been recently jilted after finding out that her fiance was a cheating scoundrel. The book passed the time but again I like things a little faster..The author had stated that this book was pleasant and that is exactly what it is pleasant she took the words right out of my mouth.
This book started slow and I thought just a typical romance. But the more I read, the more I wound up enjoying the characters and their foibles. I will look for more by this author.
This story was a very nice, engaging read. It is about a Regency party girl (balls, dancing, fashion) who conspires with a rakish cousin to one of her friends. I always said that 'love is the fire of a friendship' and this two misguided souls start out as friends. The hero is trying to help the heroine attain the attention and proposal of a popular duke. But the hero has an agenda that changes. The heroine also changes into a Suffragist. This story was very enticing as it reflected the changing times of the period in which it was written. This story had some laugh-out-loud moments and the prerequisite mean girl who causes problems.
This book was well written from start to finish. It had a dedicated beginning and end. I liked that the story did not follow the normal formula. About two thirds of the way through the book, it made a turn that was unexpected, but much enjoyed. The characters were likeable and acted in a self aware manner. The story was continuous even though there were some sub plots. The spelling and grammar had no mistakes. The story read smoothly, very continuous and no danglers. I recommend this book. 5 stars
I received an ARC of this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. The story centers on Elliot, Baron Ralston need to find a wealthy heiress to save his recently inherited estates. He settles on Lady Nina Trent, recently jilted by a scoundrel fiancee. Elliot decides deceiving Nina into believing he will help her land a Duke while instead making her fall in love with him is the best path to financial solvency.
Overall. this was a pleasant read. The dialogue is well written and easy to follow. The characters are well developed. You understand their motives and what brings them together. The story provides all the elements a reader would want in a historical, a rake in reformation, a dastardly villain, a heroine determined to chart her own course.
All these things combined for a book that while comfortable to read left me wishing there had been more. All of the elements for a good historical are here but presented as if checking off a list or filling in blank lines. I would have given 4 stars if I'd felt more passion and chemistry between Elliot and Nina. I would recommend this book for someone seeking a light, comfort read.
Okay, so I have read two of the previous three novels in this series. While, the first one will always be my favourite, I definitely enjoyed this one more than Caroline’s story.
I liked Nina as a character and she remained constant in her personality. She knew what she was looking for, and pursued it with determination, until should couldn’t sideline her own wishes any longer. She was a rare combination of feminine, naïve, headstrong and intelligent - I say rare because most historical fiction heroines tend to pick one or two of those traits. It’s nice to see a well-rounded protagonist.
I liked Elliot as well. He was such a sweet hero, caring, loyal and charming. He starts off a bit selfish and cocky, but soon finds himself put in place.
The pacing of the book was a bit too slow for my liking, though. So much time was spent on the ‘lessons’ and boring duke of whatever that was so boring and entitled.
I was also a bit annoyed with her family for not making more of an effort to talk sense into her.
Because Nina and Elliot's scenes were always kind of underlined with this weird tension, I didn’t quite feel the spark. It started off interesting, but kind of fizzled out towards the end - which should have been the other way around! I kind of wanted to read past some of their scenes to see when they will actually be genuine and honest with each other. Their interactions weren’t quite as meaningful as I would have liked.
While I love a good subterfuge plot, this one really didn’t bring out the angst I was expecting. I didn’t see that internal turmoil or that need to redeem oneself. It all kind of just happened, and fell into place quite easily. Also, I found the flip in Elliot's personality to be a bit jarring. How did he go from 'rake' to 'romantic' in a span of 50 pages?
I also wasn't sure what was happening in the action part of the book. I feel like it was just kind of randomly added in there to justify certain decisions and plot points. They just came out of nowhere, it wasn't quite hinted at much throughout.
There were a lot of great elements in this book, and the characters were amazing - especially Zeb - but I think it could have come together better!
I love this author's humor. The witty banter between Elliott and Nina kept me smiling. I love Nina's spirit, and Elliott is the perfect rake of a hero. A well-written story that kept my interest to the end.
I have loved every book of this series and this one was no different.
Elliott was the perfect, swoon worthy hero and Nina was the brave, confident heroine.
The only thing that bothered me about this book was that there were some language issues, such as Elliott saying he'd used his last dollar, not the curency used in England, ever, plus a few other things that weren't quite era appropriate.
It was nice see characters from previous books but I guessed who the "villain" was very early on.
Overall, a good book, would recommend.

Nina knows what she wants which is a bland, safe, reliable husband. Elliot knows what he needs which is an heiress. They both find much more in each other! I received an ARC from Kensington Books and NetGalley for my honest review.
This was my first book by this author. I feel like this book can be read easily as a standalone even with it being book 4 in the series.
The heroine, Nina, is looking for a safe marriage that can grow into love. She was almost engaged before and found her possible fiance had hidden secrets she just couldn't handle as his wife. She sets her eyes on a nice, boring duke.
The hero, Elliot, is known as a flirt. But his uncle has left him with property in desperate need of repair and no money to do it with, so to the marriage mart he goes. He has known Nina and enjoys her personality and decides she will do.
Give this book a try if you like
-some classic regency fun – balls, dancing, house parties
-you like a funny, fast paced, suspenseful romantic romp
-you like the fake relationship trope
This book had a lot to love about it. It had quite a few funny little scenes and quips and I enjoyed that. It had nice tension that built up over the course of the book. It doesn't have an excessive amount of scenes or super long and detailed so I think it will hit the sweet spot for most people in that regard. But there was kind of a lot of nonsense going on in the book. A lot of little plot devices that pulled the book this way and that way and while some people love that, I do not. I like the focus on the romance with maybe 1-2 other things going on. It was overall a pleasant read for me though and I think many others would like it! I give a solid 3.5 stars. There were a few things I didn't love about the ending either that make it hard to round up to 4.
Thank you netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Overall this was a decent romance with a strong heroine determined to marry a bland Duke to please her brother but finding herself intrigued by her childhood friend, Elliot. Elliot has his own agenda for pursuing Nina. While he's attracted to her he's also in needed of her dowry. Needless to say it's not the most passionate pair but entertaining nonetheless.
Great story that featured an adorable couple. It was a pretty good book to feed my historical romance addiction :)
