The Glass Queen features and array of amazing offerings. Winged Hero. Possession. Dragons. Magic. Fire. Enemies to lovers. Tournament to the DEATH!
This twisted Cinderella retelling is a new favourite!
As always Gena did an amazing job of world building and character building. Gena is one of my go too authors who I read all of their books without thinking about it. The quality of writing and the escapism in her work is extrordinary and I can't wait to keep reading her work.
This is my first Gena Showalter book but it won't be my last!! I enjoyed every page of this retelling and can't wait to read more.
A massive thank you to NetGalley and the author for letting me read this book.
The Glass Queen by Gena Showalter is the second installment in The Good and Evil series, and as someone who read it before the first book, The Evil Queen, I can confidently say that it can be read as a standalone novel.
The Glass Queen is a retelling of the classic Cinderella tale, but with a unique and original twist. In this world, fairytales are prophecies based on the Grimm Brothers' with their gruesome details.
The protagonist, Ashleigh, is born with a heart condition that should have killed her as a baby, but her mother makes a deal with a witch who turns out to be a phantom named Leonora.
The story truly begins at Ashleigh's mother's funeral, where she meets Saxon, an Avian prince who believes she tried to burn him alive. As punishment, she is sent away to work at a Temple in the forest, where she stays for three years until the king requests her to be Saxon's personal royal liaison during a tournament, he is hosting to marry off his stepdaughter, Dior.
Saxon's plan to handle Ashleigh goes awry when he unexpectedly becomes emotionally invested in her and must navigate his own feelings. The romance between Ashleigh and Saxon is heartwarming and captivating, with the added tension of Saxon's mistaken beliefs about her.
Their journey to uncover the truth and fulfill Ashleigh's prophecy is thrilling and will keep you turning the pages. The world-building is exceptional, with a unique take on fairytales and an intriguing hierarchy of species, including Avians and Phantoms.
The Glass Queen is a delightful read that is sure to satisfy fans of fantasy, fairytales, and romance. The characters are well-crafted, the world-building is rich, and the storytelling is expertly crafted.
Whether you read it as a standalone or as part of The Good and Evil series, The Glass Queen is a must-read for anyone who loves a good fairytale retelling.
ARC gifted via Netgalley
The Glass Queen is the second book in The Forest of Good and Evil trilogy, which means we will get another book in this series! If you really HAVE TO you could read this book as a standalone, but there is a ton of continuity that you will miss out on if you do.
This book has EVERYTHING! All the fantasy elements, and a hero that has wings! The story is a twisted version of Cinderella but is so unlike any other version I've ever read. For once I didn't see what was coming next, and I love that. It is so hard to find a story that isn't super predictable, and this one is is!
The only thing I"m not super excited about it is that this book is supposedly YA, but has waaaay more spice than is appropriate for a 13-15 year old and is kind of questionable for older teens.
Thank you Inkyard Press and NetGalley for sending me this book in exchange for my honest review.
New to me author but definitely won't be last. Thoroughly enjoyed this story. Thanks Netgalley and to the publisher for letting me read this advance copy.
THE GLASS QUEEN is a wonderfully fresh take on a fairy tale. There are so many books out there that offer to deliver on what this story actually excels at. The characters, the plot, and the writing seamlessly work together to bring a magical tale to life.
I realized this wasn't a book that would work for me before I downloaded it. Clearing out my backlog of Archived, Not Downloaded.
Initial Thoughts
So I wasn’t the biggest fan of the first book in this series, The Evil Queen. I loved the premise but didn’t love the mix of the real world and Enchantia and also found that it read more like a romance novel than YA. I think I had this idea of what I thought it was going to be, and it was nothing like that.
Some Things I Liked
The setting. This book only took place in Enchantia, which was much more interesting.
Nods to the first book but new characters. I loved the way the world from the first book was expanded upon and woven into this story.
Premise of the variability in the roles of the fairytales. This isn’t a traditional fairytale retelling. Anyone can play any role in the story depending on their choices and that idea is so unique.
Enemies to lovers romance. I loved the romance here. Saxon and Ashleigh are my new favorites.
Series Value
There must be another book in this series. I need more of this world.
Final Thoughts
This book was so much better than The Evil Queen. I really loved everything about this story and can’t wait to keep reading. I’m actually disappointed that I waited so long to read this one because it was so good.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is the second book in the Forest of Good and Evil series and I must say I liked this one a lot more than book 1. This is a retelling based on Cinderella. If you like retellings you should definitely give this series a try.
This sequel did not disappoint and I can’t wait to see where the series is going next! Gena Showalter is fantastic.
This was another fantastic retelling. I loved it just as much as the first. I've quickly become a fan and can't wait to read more!
This books was a fair retelling of the Cinderella fairytale. I liked book one of this series better, it this may be due to the fact that I am not a fan of enemies to lovers trope. While Showalter did a good job , it just wasn’t for me.
This is a super fun read. I really enjoyed this one!
Many thanks to the author, the publisher, and Netgalley for my ARC. All opinions are my own.
This retelling was a hit and miss for me. Some of the aspects I liked but why does Cinderella need dragons (maybe I missed the reasoning)?
This is what YA should be. It is well written. Well thought out and plotted. It is also realistic to teen and young adult behaviours. But it is so we'll down adults will enjoy this series too. These fairy tales rewrites are so complete and show so many perspectives that they are going to be timeless
The Glass Queen is a twisted fairytale retelling of Cinderalla.
Princess Ashleigh Charmaine was born with a week heart and is not strong enough to survive let alone rule one day her kingdom. She didn't received any magical power on her birthday and her father is sure that she won't live long. Until an oracle made a fairytale prediction on the little girl and the King let her mother keep the girl. As she grown up, she begins to have magical power and no control over them. She will need to work with Prince Saxon, an avian, who despise her. This one is also part of the Cinder prophecy..
I have loved this retelling of the tale and can't wait to read the next one. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an arc of this book.
Another perfect installment from Gena Showalter!!
Can't wait to read more!
Thank you so much for allowing me to read and review your titles.
I do appreciate it and continue to review books that I get the chance to read.
Thanks again!
Anything written by Gena is amazing!! This book didn't disappoint!! Loved it
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC
If a fairytale retelling is something that you love, this series is for you.
It is a retelling of Cinderella and the Princess Ashleigh is dealt a medical issue of a weak heart, making her more reliant on other traits to succeed. It reminded me a bit of A Curse So Dark and Lonely in that it has this representation. It is always refreshing for authors to bring real life differences into their fictional worlds and characters.
I preferred book one but both are good and well worth the read.
