Over the years my reading habits have changed and I no longer reach for historical fiction as much since my brain can't seem to follow along with all of the variety of characters. I do no feel like I can give a fair review for this book because of this so I am just going to move it onto my "in the future when life slows down" tbr.
I really enjoyed this book. 8t was unusual subject matter: post-war relations between Germany and Italy. I became genuinely invested in the characters lives; feeling happy for their successes and dismayed at the obstacles they faced. A very good WWII eea novel. Two thumbs up.
I never got the chance to read this one before it was archived, but the idea behind it is so promising! I'm truly grateful for the publisher giving me a chance to read it, and will be looking for a physical copy in my local bookstore.
On the night that Julia and her partner win a major designing competition (n Milan, Italy), that will finally take their clothing business into the black, Julia discovers that, her father, (supposedly "dead"), is alive, and living in Italy. This is a real shocker for Julia, because her mother told her, in no uncertain terms, that her father was dead. The visitor, who informed Julia of her father, a man named Vincent, claims to be Julia's grandfather. His single last wish before he dies is for Julia to reunite with her father. This is how Julia, who only ever had her mother, and who is already in her 30's, learns about the family she never knew she had.
The story of her family starts in Munich, but goes back to Milan and then to the southernmost parts of Italy, including Sicily and the archipelago of islands around Sicily, namely Salina and Lipari. Vincent, her grandfather, is an automobile aficionado He worked for many years for BMW, and he passed his love of automobiles on to his son, Vincenzo, who aspired to race Formula One (iseta ispos, #isetarevolta, #Alfas, #Ferraris). I was swept up into this family's story and I honestly, could not put it down.
I was given an e-ARC of the book compliments of @netgalley and @amazon publishing in return for my honest review. I give it #5stars and highly reccomend it!
Set in 2 timelines, this is a beautiful novel, telling how the past can affect our futures. Descriptive journey into Italy, from Milan to Sicily, with Julia exploring her past and finding her future.
I love books about family sagas and this is a great one. It has a dual narrative; one 1954 and the other 2014. The author has done a wonderful job of tying everything together and seamlessly integrating the characters and the timeline. I recommend this book to anyone who likes historical fiction.
Thank you Net Galley for allowing me to read this incredible book for my honest opinion.
This story is set between two timelines, 1954 and 2014, two countries and self-discovery. A lie from the past that could threaten the present. Good story. My thanks to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The author brilliantly weaves this story between two timelines. The journey of starting over in a new place along with the bond of family are themes that are present in the writing. I thoroughly enjoyed this one!
This is a big sweeping dual time line family saga that will keep you entertained. Set in 1954 and 2014, it's the story of secrets. Julia, in 2014, is told by a man claiming to be her grandfather, that her father is alive. In 1954, Vincent, an engineer, fell in love with a young Italian woman, who left him. More than I can capture in a brief review, it's got a big heart and was, oddly, educational about a time and place I was unfamiliar with. Thanks to Netgalley for the Arc. For fans of historical fiction.
A really fun dual timeline novel. I enjoyed this one.
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for my ARC. All opinions are my own.
I received a copy through NetGalley, all opinions are mine.
This is a very, very long story. I thought there was one main character, but, in fact, the book shows different life lines. I've learnt a lot about how the Italian community integrated in Germany. Numerous decades are contemplated, from the 1950s to today. The description are cinematographic and easy to follow.
After a while, it is to the reader to decide whether the book is likeable or not. I found the story with too many melodramatic twists and turns. Still, I kept reading because I wanted to know how all was going to end.
A beautiful story of love loss secrets.A book that kept me reading late into the night.A novel Inwill be recommending to all lovers of historical fiction or lovers of an emotional moving novel.#netgalley#amazoncrossing
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to review this book.
From the outside looking in, Julia seems to be thriving: her fashion line is about to explode, and she loves her work. But with success comes secrets from the past, revealed to her by a man that claims to be her grandfather. What happens next is a beautifully articulated story about love, loss, and how secrets of the past always come to light.
More than anything, this story is about discovering home. Is home a place, or a person, or simply a feeling? The quest to discover home affects the lives of everyone in the novel.
