This is now one of my favourite mythology collections I've read to date. The art and illustrations are so breath-taking and striking, honestly some of the most beautiful, bright, bold and colourful, eye-catching, stunning art I have ever seen in a book! I would die to get hold of these illustrations in individual prints!
Not only that, but it shows prominent myths and legends from every continent, detailing a summary and origin story of each. It's so easy to follow and organised, showing a gorgeous map of the world and sections flowing from the West to the East, starting with The Americas and finishing at Oceania, so you can read about each continents key mythology. Each myth is show cased in 4 pages, or 2 double spreads, showing a page length illustration, a concise summary, and a double-page view of its origin story. Very insightful and informative, I have picked up some myths I wasn't aware of, and it shows familiar myths which are most-well known but may not know the origins. I know this is listed as Children's non-fiction but I would strongly recommend it to all ages. I have already pre-ordered a physical copy because I loved it that much and want to marvel at this gorgeous book physically!
What a beautiful book! The illustrations really stand out as they are so richly detailed and gorgeously coloured.
The content is divided up into continents, and introduces us to a selection of mythical creatures from each region - some quite famous and plenty I've never heard of before. They are explained easily and concisely, without shying away from some of the more gruesome and grisly details (which is a good thing!)! Some of the descriptions are followed by a short story about the creature from the relevant folklore. These stories are a fantastic addition, and as with the descriptions they are easy to follow but true to the mythology.
It's lovely to find a book that is both stunning to look at and interesting to read, and although it might be a bit scary for some youngsters, I can imagine it being a lasting favourite for many children of all ages (and adults!).
I was given a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.
Mythopedia by Good Wives and Warriors was exceptional. There was a wide variety of mythological creatures from every continent and many religions. There were so many creatures that I had never heard of before and that was a great surprise for me because I have read a number of these books like this one. It was very well researched. Each creature was given two pages one with an illustration and one with a description. Some of them were followed by a popular story about the creature and it was fun to read their tales.
The illustrations... they were stunning. Full page depictions of every mythological being with bright engaging colors. The art took this book to the next level.
Overall, I really enjoyed this collection of mythological creatures and I will definitely be buying this book for our library.
5 stars
Wow wow wow!!! The art work is gorgeous. This is one I’m going to pre order because I just NEED to see and own the art work physically.
The mythology was well compiled. Some I recognized and recalled, others I learned more about, and the others were first time reading about. This was just so entertaining, interesting, and thoughtful. If interested in starting to read mythology I highly recommend this as pictures and short concise page of overall myth formatted smartly makes understanding/comprehension really accessible.
My favorite section was Asia’s mythology.
Again the ARTWORK. PLEASE SUPPORT THESE TALENTED ARTISTS!!!
Nice title with a large variety of readable myths from all over the globe. There is good representation from a large variety of cultures with engaging bright, colorful illustrations complimenting them. Recommended for public libraries as well as schools. This would be a nice gift for an upper elementary or middle schooler who has an interest in mythology.
Thanks to #Netgalley, #Laurence King Publishing Ltd and the author for providing me with a copy of #Mythopedia in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book it is stunning. The illustrations are beautiful and the stories are well written. I know very little about myths and this book will be so helpful when trying to decide what these creatures look like. I will definitely be buying a hard copy of this book.
This stunning and vibrant collection explores mythical beasts from all over the world. The selection of lesser-known mythology is accompanied by some of the most stunning illustrations I've ever seen. I'll be pre-ordering this for my shelf!
What a stunning book; it is honestly a work of art. Each page is truly a masterpiece and just so wonderful to look at and study. This was a joy to behold and read. The illustrations are so bright, vibrant and intricate. They're a rainbow of colours and just beautiful, even those of some seriously creepy looking spiders! I 'oohed' and 'aahed' at each page and loved how such bizarre and fantastical creatures were brought to life so vividly. The stories told to accompany each illustration were so interesting to read, each one a new insight into different countries and cultures across the globe. This was a fascinating read that would be great for lovers of mythology and those interested in learning more about cultures and folktales from different parts of the world. I would love to find some stories that are based on such tales as some of them are just so intriguing.
I would definitely recommend this book for those who love a beautiful coffee table book, children who loves folktales and those readers who love mythology. Thank you for such a beautiful experience!
Many thanks for allowing me to review this beautiful book. I thought this was a good mixture of legends from round the world that are both familiar and less well known. I loved the stories, in particular the Ahuizotl from South America, African Grootslang and Japanese Kurage-No-Hinotama a floating fiery jellyfish! The illustrations were absolutely wonderful and their vibrancy really lifts this book. Definitely one we will be stocking in our libraries.
This book is stunning!! The illustrations are gorgeous and it makes this book a serious pleasure to read. I have spent the afternoon reading the book with my daughter who loved it. I really enjoyed having the information about the mythical creature then having a small story about them. I also felt it was great the have myths from all over the world . I would highly recommend this book , not just for myself , but my daughter who is 11 loved it. We will definitely be purchasing when published ❤️
Thank you Laurence King Publishing and Netgalley for giving me access to the ARC of this book!
Firstly the illustrations are incredible! I found myself drifting away just admiring the art in this book. So wonderful and stimulating to the imagination- I can only imagine how much younger readers will enjoy this aspect!
Secondly the stories themselves are so good. They are simple to read, not too long, easy to follow and I love that they are broken down into location in which the myths belong throughout the world. It's a delightful book and as a myth loving adult I enjoyed it and I'm sure anyone young or old who enjoys mythology would love it!
Thank you NetGalley and Laurence King Publishing for gifting me an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
First of all, the illustrations in the book are breathtakingly gorgeous! They’re bright, colorful, and just really spectacularly done!
Second, this is a great book for a younger reader just beginning to gain interest in mythology. It has a diverse range of stories from all over the world that are grouped by continent and is inclusive of many different cultures. The stories themselves are short, simple, and intriguing, which will definitely pique the interest of the readers.
Firstly, this book is gorgeous. I already have it on my wishlist for when it is available. I can't wait to see this in hand, because I'm sure that the pictures I thought were stunning on my tablet will be incredible in actual print.
I adore that this book is by continent and that there is a contents page as this made it easy for me to read it fully the first time through and then skip around a second time to look at the pictures and to ensure I had remembered a few details correctly.
I love how wide this range of mythologies are and how varied the creatures within are.
I'm sure children and mythology loving adults alike will appreciate this master piece.
I let out an actual gasp when I opened Mythopedia for the first time. This is an astonishingly gorgeous book packed to the brim with beautiful watercolour art!
In addition to the art (which I could wax on about for an age as I devoured every inch of the page), it's full of stories and descriptions of mythological creatures from every continent on Earth, and attempts to spend an equal time with each. I knew a lot about the European myths, but the rest came as an interesting surprise to me!
I will absolutely be purchasing a copy for myself to go with my already-rather-large collection of books on mythology and folklore. If the publishers were ever interested in turning this into a series bringing to life more myths and folk tales, I can imagine myself filling my shelves with each and every one!
Wow, what an awesome book with breathtakingly vibrant illustrations! 'Mythopedia' introduces readers to a variety of myths and creatures from all over the world. This would be best for upper elementary school aged readers and up as some of the creatures and stories are a little scary. Overall, an amazing book!
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing this ARC.
This book is extremely detailed. Excellent illustrations and stories about the mythological creatures. Very well done. I like that it has mythology from all over the world making it more inclusive than most collections. I especially appreciated the Native American myths from North and South America.
The illustrations in this are absolutely stunning and really encapsulate the feel of these myths and legends. As a big fan of the topic, I've read pretty widely on the subject, and can say that these are by far my favourite images.. There's also a really diverse range of myths here, that cover a lot of the world which I really appreciated. I even found a few new stories that I had never read about before.
A wonderful collection, that has been well thought out and collected together in a systematic way that leaves it easy to read and enjoy. I devoured this in one sitting, and can't wait to reread it again if for the visual delights alone.
What initially drew me to this book was the vibrant cover art and the fact that it had Myth written in the name. I am a huge, huge fan of reading different myths and legends from all over the world. So when I saw this book, I knew I needed to read it!
Throughout the entire book, there is nothing but gorgeous illustrations accompanying each and every myth. The books is divided into countries so the reader is able to identify where each myth originated from. The myth descriptions and stories themselves are by no means difficult to follow or too rich in text, so younger readers should be able to easily read and follow along. There are some challenging phrases and words that a younger reader may have difficulty with, but it shouldn't be too much of an issue, especially if a parent is reading alongside them.
Overall, this is definitely one book that I will be purchasing for my own shelf and can't recommend enough! I also think it would be interesting if one day the author created a corresponding coloring book, or even included a few coloring pages at the end.
Disclosure: I received a complimentary eARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes. I'd like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for providing me this opportunity!
This book is breathtaking. I think I actually gasped when opening it and seeing the artwork, and was so incredibly pleased to find most pages followed suit with the vibrant, magical illustrations covering entire pages. Especially because when it comes to imagining mythological creatures, it can be so difficult to picture them when it's simply listed as "this creature is part lion, part goat, part snake". The illustrations really help with that, showing these mythologies just as bizarre and wonderful as they are.
I really liked how at least half of the creatures were followed with a double-paged story relating to it, further solidifying their place in mythology. I loved how they were categorised by area too, spanning across the globe and giving you an introduction into many cultures. I already know I'd love to see a follow up to this book, with even more creatures or beings from mythologies across the world.
This is an absolutely stunning book, and one I'll definitely be buying physically to add to my mythology collection. It's one you can dip in and out of as you please, and I can fully envision myself going back and flipping through the pages of this book when I have a physical copy.
I don't think this is trying to be definitive, which is a good thing, for it's not. It's also a very good thing in its own way, for it has a fine scope, a deliriously colourful design, and some decent knowledge to impart. This look at the world's unusual mythological beings mostly sticks to the format of a four-paragraph introduction to it, resplendent with wonderful artwork, and a full-page portrait to accompany that. It will, at the relevant time, however, spin off for a second spread, where we get a simple telling of the key legend. Hence we get a hunting hare making out with the creature that helped it solve the post-Flood lack of ground, and one of the Amazon basin don't-go-near-the-water creatures leaving absolutely no witnesses to one of their attacks (so how do we know about it, then?!) - and that's just the Americas. This is structured by continent, and tries to be fair in how much time we spend in each. It's a sign of how ridiculously opulent it wants to be, that we get a beautiful but pointless map of the world with the continents on, just in case we don't know what the planet looks like. As for the artwork, it is very varied, and it is clearly a studio production and not the work of just one artiste, but the standard and quality is superlative (except for whatever the heck that is that the basilisk is staring at). So come here for a gentle, worldly-wise look at mythical beasts, but if you're the type to be done with the Americas, monstrously howl "what no chupacabra?!" and ditch it in all ignorance of how delectable it looks, then it will not be for you. A non-comprehensive coffee table approach is what this book aims for, and it achieves it like no other.
