This book was absolutely stunning. I think I spent more time looking at the artwork than actually reading it. It was just amazing and I can see how it would be appealing to both kids and adults. The creatures covered were also really interested. I had heard of many, but I was pleasantly surprised by how many were included that I wasn't aware of. Kudos to the creators of this book - I think it is something that can be considered both fun and educational for readers of all ages.
I received an Advanced Readers Copy through Netgalley
Omg guys! Speaking to those that have this book, how freaking lovely are the pictures in this? I mean seriously though I audibly gasped when I opened this, then I made my husband look at it
I loved the artwork so much that I had to go out and find the artist(s). So behind the Good Wives and Warriors are these women, Becky Bolton and Louise Chappell. Their artwork is stunning. Here's their website where you can check them out - http://www.goodwivesandwarriors.co.uk/about/
As for the stories, I particularly liked that there were some unknown myths written in here. My favorite being "The Raven" and a story about how he unleashes the light on Earth.
Wow! In a time where the literature world is desperate for representation, this book answers the call. I imagine all these stories being told by parents and grandparents to their young ones in each corner of the world. This book unites all those stories in one and allows everyone to have a taste of those cultures. It is a fabulous addition to children's literature diet but also to their understanding of the world and growth. This book will definitely be seen in each and every classroom throughout the UK and beyond. Every home will vie to have this as their pride piece.
I love, love, love this beautiful book! Thank you NetGalley and the Publisher for giving me an e ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I love reading about Mythology and this books did not disappoint. It is full of coloured illustrations of so many mythological creatures and their story. The art is gorgeous and captivating. The creatures are separated by regions and has rich text.
It was an absolute pleasure reading and browsing through it. Perfect addition to your library. Definitely getting it for my library and recommend you do too!
This book is absolutely stunning. The pictures are beautiful and the text well written. I loved this and it will be perfect for my students.
This is an intensely, breathtakingly beautiful book. The illustrations will capture your heart and your imagination as you travel around the world meeting strange, mythical and legendary creatures.
Though the text may be harder for younger readers, they need only the pictures to create stories in their minds of these fantastical beasts.
I love the alternating info pages about the beasts and the stories featuring them. It is a true celebration of cultures and the myths from around the world, some familiar and some new.
This is one book I will buy and display forward facing as it begs to be read and enjoyed.
LOVE this book!
First off, this cover is beyond beautiful. It makes even non-readers want to crack open this book. The illustrations follow suit with their bright colors and great detail. I appreciate how the Mythopedia is split and organized by continents then countries.
I absolutely want to get a copy of this book for my home library and to share with my niece,
Thank you NetGalley and Publisher for the early review copy.
Beautifully illustrated, in fact, it has the be the best-illustrated book I have seen in a very long time.
This will appeal to all ages, especially those who love myths and fantastical tales.
I will definitely purchase this book and it is a great addition to the classroom.
This is stunningly illustrated, the bright and colourful images eye-grabbing. As for the stories themselves, they are divided into region-specific mythology and go between full tales about mythical creatures to just brief introductory paragraphs about the beast. While not as comprehensive as I would have liked, focusing only on the regions most well known mythological beasts it is still a beautiful entertaining read. This is perfect for fans of mythology and as an introduction for children to the vast and varied myths that exist.
I received an arc of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Mythopedia: An Encyclopedia of Mythical Beasts and Their Magical Tales is a book full of myths and legends from The Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania.
Having always been interested in anything to do with mythology and folklore I was very excited to read this book. The illustrations throughout the book are stunning and really bring the stories to life. Each tale was short and captivating making it a cozy morning or evening read with a tea or coffee which I love.
Every story was unique and my favorites were Fenrir - because who doesn’t love a story with a wolf, Qilin - a kind and gentle unicorn-like beast, and The Dragon Pearl - a story about a village boy who found a red stone in the forest and went on a adventure to find Shenlong the rain dragon.
I definitively recommend this book if you enjoy reading about mythical creatures and their legends. Mythopedia even made me enjoy some of my not so favorite creatures (spiders) and the myths and legends wrapped around them.
Mythopedia is both interesting and gorgeous and is truly suitable for all ages. The pictures of the mythical creatures are art works by themselves, and I would gladly buy them as prints if they were available. The book would be appreciated by everyone from children to adults, whether just looking at the pictures or reading the interesting and quirky stories about these mythical beasts from around the world. Despite being gifted an advance e-arc via Netgalley I will definitely buy this book when it comes out and quite possibly more than one to give as gifts. A true treasure!
Thank you to Laurence King Publishing for allowing me to read this beautiful book!
This book drew my attention on the cover art alone, before I even read the title. The illustrations are vibrant, eye-catching, and beautiful. The best part is that these breath-taking illustrations continue through the whole book!
The Mythopedia is split up into countries (Europe, Asia, the Americas) and from there, different mythological creatures are introduced. The short stories that accompany most of the creatures are intriguing and much appreciated. They give a good sense of information without being overbearing for the age range.
The book itself isn’t terribly long, and is a good source of information for those interested in mythical creatures. Some of the phrasing/information might be a bit difficult for younger readers, but they’ll be so captivated by the illustrations it won’t matter much!
Overall, this is something I can’t wait to have on my own shelf at home! I knew about some of the creatures mentioned, and was so excited to read information about them and put them into the books I knew them from!
Thank you Laurence King Publishing and NetGalley for sending me a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

I'm a total sucker for anything Mythology, so when I saw this book pop up, I had to snap it up!
The illustrations alone make this book worth it - I can't get over how gorgeous each page is! Each creature gets at least half a page dedicated to it, with short and simple descriptions - perfect for children and people looking to gain introductory knowledge on various mythologies! Some creatures were given an extra double page with a specific story which I loved! I really enjoyed how the highlighted creatures weren't always the typical ones that you hear about everywhere.
The mythological creatures are split into continents to make it easier to navigate. A small improvement which would have given me extra appreciation for this book would have been a small line under the name of the creature highlighting the country and culture that each one originates from. It would have lifted the entire book and made it that little bit more special!
I loved that not every creature came from the well know civilisations/cultures of the continent, but I did find having 2 from Norse Myths and Greek Myths overkill in the European section when there are many more countries myths can be taken from.
Overall, I fell in love with the Mythopedia. The illustrations are gorgeous and I would have them on my wall if I could! I loved learning about mythology that I didn't have any knowledge of before and this book has made me want to dive deeper into the mythology of different cultures I haven't looked at before! I gave this book 4 stars in the end.
Thank you so much to net galley for sending me a copy of this book. As someone who is in love with myths and legends I was so excited to read this book. I was not disappointed in the slightest! I was really impressed by the array of creatures and even ones I’ve never heard of l.
I was given this ARC in exchange for an honest review. This was a BEAUTIFULLY illustrated book. The monsters/myths were brought to life not only by the stories that accompanied them, but by the colorful drawings that breathed life into each one. Separated by region, this is one I can't wait to have on the shelf. Thank you for allowing me to preview this.
Cover Art: 5/5 absolutely gorgeous!
Audience: Young readers; Fantasy readers.
Setting: The Earth.
Overall: 3.5
This GORGEOUS book explores historic mythical creatures through the globe. It provides cultural context (myths per location) and helps bolster a feeling of worldliness. Most of the creatures are described get a half page to tell their story with beautiful art surrounding them, while a few get a two-and-a-half page spread that dives a little bit deeper. I really enjoyed learning about and expanding my knowledge of creatures such as the Thunderbird from the Americas, Pegasus from Europe, Anubis from Africa, the Yeti from Asia and Tiddalik from Oceania. I would've loved to leaf through this book in a classroom during my school days - the art is absolutely captivating!
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. Unfortunately I do not have the capability to read it in the protected pdf format. Thank you.
The paintings in this short book are absolutely gorgeous. I could definitely see myself purchasing this beautiful book for anyone who appreciates mythology.
I recommend it for mythology lovers of all ages. It is easy to read and understand. I would like to thank netgalley for letting me review this book
