Thankyou to Netgalley the publisher and the Authors for giving me a e copy of this book. This book is stunning the pictures are Georgus and i wish I had this book in my collection as a kid. Loved all the stories of mermaid folk lore it was interesting and informative I really enjoyed this book. 5 out of 5 stunning.
What a fabulous book for any mermaid lover (such as myself!) Mermaid Atlas: Merfolk of the World by Anna Claybourne brings together two of my loves travel/world culture and mermaids.
When starting this book, I knew that mermaids came in good and evil types. I was also familiar with 2 or 3 of the mermaid legends in this book. That was maybe 5% of this book. The book is broken down by continent or region in the world. Then with each story, it lists the exact place of the legend. I learned that several cultures have mermaid legends where mermaids live in lakes, streams, rivers, etc. Also, they sometimes have other features such as snake tails or the ability to fly off. The facts about sirens are fascinating as well.
The illustrations by Miren Asiain Lora were each so stunning and really helped me to picture the different merfolk even more. The colour added a fun element to the stories and legends.
This book is phenomenal and a must for mermaids and mermaid lovers of all ages. Both the book and illustrations are an 11 out of 10! This book makes me want to research and explore this topic even more. I love how different cultures have their own take on the story and legends that have surely passed down from generation to generation for centuries.
I received an electronic advanced reader copy from Laurence King Publishing Ltd through NetGalley. All opinions are 100% my own.
*received for free from netgalley for honest review* Love this book! its so great learned so much about mermaids I never knew there was so many different stories of mermaids
This book gives short snippets of information about mermaid legends around the world. The drawings are simple and beautiful. I appreciate that every continent was given focus, and the sheer number of mermaid myths will intrigue the readers. This would be a good addition to a myth and folktale section of a school or classroom library.
This was a beautifully illustrated book about mermaids, the stories were great and lure you into reading more. Overall I really enjoyed reading this, it's great for mermaid fans and young adults.
This was a really amazing book with stories and "facts" that I had never heard before. I love learning about the different types of mermaids and selkies and how different cultures believe different things.
Firstly, this book is gorgeous. The illustrations are fun, colourful and just as vibrant as you would hope a Mermaid Atlas to be.
I love that the book is divided into continents, and then you move around the various types of mermaids that live in each region. [Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania, North America and South Ameria with a section each]. There are facts, pictures and stories of sightings as you move through the book.
I'm an adult and I appreciated everything this book had to offer, and I'm already considering purchasing it for my niece's christmas.
First off, this book is absolutely beautiful. The drawings are colorful, vibrant and lively! I love how the book is divided into maps of the continents and their countries so you can learn where the information and stories are coming from. It is also brilliant that they added Mermen into it as well! Most books I see on Mermaids don't usually include Mermen in them.
This is definitely a book that I will be purchasing as I expect the physical version to be even more stunning in person!
Disclosure: I received a complimentary eARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes. I'd like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for providing me this opportunity!
Gorgeous illustrations! Super informative about all the different types of mer-folk. The layout was great and easy to follow. Loved this one and may purchase it for myself. Thank you netgalley and to the publisher for a copy!
So lovely! Clearly explained and beautifully illustrated.
The child in me has enjoyed it quite a lot. And it has been so nice to see the story of the merfolk from my country. I grew up listening to these stories, because my grandfather grew up on the magnificent and magical Chiloé Island, and I used to go there with my family. La Pincoya , La Sirena and El Pincoy are some of the magical creatures from the Island along with others who live in the forest.
I wish I could hold it in my hands. To be able to flip every page and look at the lovely illustrations by Miren Asiain Lora.
Thanks to Laurence King Publishing Ltd and NetGalley for providing me with an e-arc in exchange for my honest review.
Text heavy and organized in a way that didn't make total sense to me. I can only see readers enjoying this book if they're really interested in mermaids.
Gorgeous, and although the listing says that it is for children, I believe people of all ages would really enjoy this!
Mermaids are such a fascinating mythological creature so this Atlas is the best place to start to look into them more closely!
I loved how this book is set out - each continent is given a map at the beginning, showing where each Mermaid is from. Each continent chapter then has a small passage or a slightly longer description of the Mermaid and where it's from! I loved how many different cultures and countries are represented in this book, and how it's just enough to get you interested to look further into them!
The illustrations for this book are beautiful and detailed, giving an each story their own personality depending on what the Mermaid is like.
It is marketed as a Children's book, and it is definitely easy to read and would be fantastic for a child to dip in and out of, but I loved it as an adult too for all the same reasons!
I ended up giving this 5 stars as it's a perfect, concise introduction to the vast world of Mermaids!
"The Mermaid Atlas" is such a lovely book! Beautiful illustrations accompany a good selection of stories and facts about mermaids, their lives and habits. The best part is that the book concentrates on tales from around the world, not just Europe, so we get a glimpse into the folklore of many different cultures and their stories. A perfect book for any mermaid enthusiast, whatever the age!
This book is kind of different from others because it really is like an atlas, which means you can explore the world with a cute illustration.
The illustration is amazing because as we know this book is intended for children, and not to mention how it pictures each mystical creature is cute so children will not get tired of it and want to explore the rest of the book.
In this book, you will have a chance to explore any kind of sea mystical creature, mermaid, from all over the world. You may travel to continent to continent and hours will be passed like wow it is already at the end of the book!
I do really recommend this book to kill time and it really is nice to have your children to know more about folklore not only technological things!
This is a excellent little atlas of mermaid and other merfolk with gorgeous illustrations. I had no idea that there were more than a handful of tales around the world about creatures that were half-human, half-sea creature. Of course there would be, and that only shows my own naivety. It's fascinating to me that all across the Earth there are similar stories from vastly different peoples, and we haven't always had contact with each other. It makes me feel that we have always been connected, somehow, for thousands of years. How else can you explain that there are similar stories of folklore in Patagonia, but also in Norway? Or South Africa and New Zealand? I'm a little sad there are seemingly no tales of merpeople in Western Canada, where I am from, but I'll be happy enough to know they are in many other places across the world.
“The Mermaid Atlas“ was an interesting little book with lovely illustrations. I thought it would be longer though.
This is a beautifully illustrated atlas that gives you a brief history of merpeople from all over the world. I really loved my time reading and learning about all the different myths and legends.
I would say that this is targeted towards a younger audience as the book focuses more on the key facts and doesn't go into much detail.
My only downside was that I was wanting more and I wish this book contained more stories and more information.
This gorgeously illustrated book briefly dives into the history of mermaids. It has beautiful maps showing the spread of mermaid stories throughout history (& who you could find where!), I knew about the classic European Mermaid tales but I was astonished to learn about so many that I never heard of: African, North American, Australian and more. The art work is really fantastic and awe-spiring, it really added that extra beauty to the book. Overall, this is a sweet little read, I would recommend grabbing a hard copy to really get the full effect! If you love mermaids you'll love this!
Cover Art: 5/5 absolutely gorgeous!
Audience: Young readers; Fantasy readers.
Setting: The Earth - Americas, Europe, Africa, Oceania, and Asia
Overall: 4 stars.
