Elin Hilderbrand is the epitome of a summer beach read. I honestly believe that it isn't summer until I've devoured the Latest Elin Hilderbrand read and this book was a great addition to my Hilderbrand collection. Though this book was not my favourite of her Nantucket books, there is no bad book by Elin Hilderbrand so I still had a great time.
The book follows Mallory and Jake who meet one summer when they are young, had instant chemistry, but bad timing. The two promise to meet for the next 28 summers every labor day weekend on Nantucket no matter what. This book is a beautiful love story that spans a decades-long love affair. It made me laugh, made me angry, and inevitably made me cry. Highly Recommend.
I'm a longtime fan of Elin Hilderbrand's and will pick up pretty much anything she writes. I love that she tried a different format for 28 Summers, but it wasn't a fit for me. The writing style made it hard to connect, which ultimately drove me to put it in my DNF pile.
A likable story that is well written - but not a huge win for my reading pleasure.
The story was easy enough to get through, but not one that is memorable, was relatable or characters that I wanted to continue reading about - even as I was reading the book at the time.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for my complimentary eARC in exchange for an honest, unbiased review. Please excuse my tardiness in posting my review. My TBR list is continuously growing and I keep finding so many amazing books being requested + added to my pile! I have so much gratitude for this copy that has been shared with me.
I loved this book. It packs an emotional punch that I will not forget for a while. Elin Hilderbrand never disappoints
I read this book last summer, and this beautiful story is still with me. I love how Elin Hilderbrand transports us to the beautiful Nantucket in almost every book she writes. This book follows Mallory and Jake for nearly 28 Labour Day Weekends for 28 years. This tradition carries on every year – no matter what.
Although I don’t condone cheating, I couldn’t help but root for Mallory and Jake throughout the years. There were a few things I didn’t really like about the book. I felt Mallory was constantly self-sabotaging herself with her romantic relationships over the years… and Jake…. Well, he was in a relationship of convenience. I didn’t really understand WHY they couldn’t just be together.. it didn’t make sense, but I guess that’s the whole point of having a premise of “Same Time, Next Year.”
28 Summers by Elin Hilderbrand was a great read about complex relationships, longing, and forbidden traditions created between forbidden lovers.
I received a review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley for my honest review. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
There are not enough sunshines in the world for this book. I loved every gut wrenching minute of it. I cried, ugly cried, when I finished it and you know exactly how it is going to end from the first page. Mallory and Jake had a love for the ages and Elin did such a good job weaving their stories together across 28 summers in their same time next year love affair. Go read it NOW if you haven’t!!
Oh my goodness loved the premise behind 28 Summers based on the movie Same Time Next Year. Once again we fall in love with Nantucket. Elin’s descriptions of the island lend the feeling that you are right on the island with all her characters. A touch of history at the start of each chapter letting the reader know what was happening in the world that year over the course of 28 summers. Mallory was definitely a strong woman who was willing to give up a lot for her once a year meeting with Jake. I can’t imagine loving someone so fiercely yet only seeing them over the course of a three day weekend yearly. A plausible storyline that has a heartbreaking ending. Another winner from Ms. Hilderbrand which will leave you with a tear or two!! Ty #NetGalley for the ARC All opinions are my own. #28 Summers.
Whenever I read an Elin Hilderbrand novel I picture myself poolside on a hot summer day. 28 Summers did not disappoint in feeling like I was transported to Nantucket and taking part in the story! Thank you, NetGalley for the ARC!
Elin Hilderbrand always writes real good summer stories that really transports
you to a sunny day in a lounge chair by the beach! And this book didn't disappoint!
You really can never get enough of books from Elin Hilderbrand!
Due to inappropriate, harassing behavior by the author on social media, I will not be reading or reviewing any of her books going forward.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the advance copy.
I love Elin Hilderbrand's writing style and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. She makes it so easy to picture the beautiful Nantucket setting and it was fun digging into the lives of these characters.
Based on the film Same Time Next Year, Mallory and Jake get together each summer. Jake is Mallory's brother's college friend and no one ever suspects that they are as close as they become. Mallory' son, Link, is directed to call a specific phone number at his mother's death and is surprised to find that the person on the other end of the line is Jake McCloud, spouse of the front runner for President of the United States.
With bittersweet moments, the book tells the story of two lives that could have been lived in far different ways than were chosen by the characters.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to read Elin's book. I really enjoy her books every summer and this was no exception!
I enjoyed this story, based on the premise of "Same time, next year". I especially enjoyed the beginnings of each chapter where we were asked "What were we talking about in [this summer]?" Hard to believe that I lived through almost all of those years! Jake and Mallory have been meeting on Nantucket for a long weekend for almost 28 years, despite him being married and she having a son. There was never any talk between them about marriage; Jake, best friend of Mallory's brother Cooper, was involved and then married to a powerful, selfish woman whom he'd know all his life and was an up-and-comer in US politics. Mallory was a single mom living in a cottage she'd inherited, raising her son and teaching at the local school. The conclusion is obvious from the beginning but it doesn't take away from the rest of the story. I've never been to Nantucket but feel like I have thanks to the author's books.
Another Great book by Elin Hikerbrand! I love how she makes you part of the book by getting me emotionally involved with her characters. Reason why she is one of my favorite authors!
This is one of those stories that you know the ending at the beginning, but I was quickly invested in learning how the arrangement stood the test of time for these characters. Mallory Blessing and Jake McCloud are pretty upfront about the Same Time, Next Year vibe the story takes from the very beginning. Jake is a college buddy of Mallory's brother, the serial marriage guy, so when they begin meeting up, it all kind of makes sense. I really liked the epigraphs at the beginning of each section, very pop culture-y and newsy. Some years I was left wanting to know more, but gradually the whole story comes out over time. The end has a bit of a meet cute that lets the imagination wonder what may happen down the road.
The writing was very good but the story line made me uncomfortable. I do not believe in romanticizing infidelity and so reading this book made me feel a little icky. With that said I was still invested in the outcome and was still semi able to enjoy the book as a whole.
I very much enjoyed this book! I loved the characters and I loved following their ups and downs on the journey through 28 summers. The ending was not exactly what I hoped for, but it was perfect for the story.
Cute premise. I was really into the beginning. Hooked me right away. Lost a little bit in the middle--I could have done without ALL of that political commentary--but not much because the pacing is really good and quick and something is happening every one of the 28 summers. You see, the book is split up as though each summer is a chapter. And it tells the story of Mallory and Jake as they proceed to have an illicit, secret, no-stings-attached, romantic relationship regardless of their personal lives, careers, and other relationships. The reader follows them through all 28 yeas of their relationship. And I have to say, following that many years of contast bad relationships (from all the different characters) was quite tiring. The concept is birthed out of Mallory's belief that they could never make a real, long-distance relationship work. So they only get together for a short time over the summer, meeting up without anyone knowing. I really hated that concept. It makes no sense to me why Mallory thinks they can't work. Especially once they have meeting together for a few years. But something was always happening, and I did want to find out where each of the characters ended up. So that was interesting.
Not my favorite Hilderbrand, though.
