Even though I knew how this would end, I read wanting more...I've read many of Erin Hildenbrand books and this was one of the better ones.. I enjoyed the setting, the characters, and it makes me want to go Nantucket. Also makes one examine the concept addressed in the book...
Another great.by Elin Hilderbrand! Loved the setting and seeing how the characters evolve over the years. Couldn’t put it down!
I am not a big “chick lit” fan, but I LOVED this book. I didn’t want to put it down, yet I didn’t want it to end.
Inspired by the concept of the film, Same Time Next Year, the story focused not only on the couple’s yearly rendezvous, but also how their separate lives evolved through the years. I really liked how each of the 28 years is prefaced with what we were talking about in that particular year. It was like going back in a time machine to reexperience those times.
Elin Hilderbrand is one of my favorite summer authors and this book definitely captured my attention. Two characters who meet on the same day every year over their lives. A romantic premise but frustrating at the same time. I found myself wishing they would just confess their feelings and be together. Instead, they both acted like martyrs. Anyways.......
A little sudsy and scandalous. The story takes place primarily on Nantucket and follows an unconventional love story that spans 3 days each year over 28 summers. Each chapter/summer started with a short recap of what the world was doing in (insert year here). I loved listening to what Hilderbrand chose to include as I reflected on my personal highlights of each year. It was a smart way to show the passing of time and keep moving the story forward.
This was pure escapism and I was here for all the ups and downs. Right up until the very end when I had to grab a tissue. Worth it.
A tactful word of caution- infidelity is unavoidable in this book. No one digs infidelity. But if that is a deal breaker for your reading- skip this one.
This is a Netgalley ARC review. All opinions are solely my own.
It’s been a long time since I’ve got a book and had to finish it in one sitting. 28 Summers by Elin Hilderbrand is a timeless read that takes the reader on a journey of emotions.
Mallory and Jake have a love that spans decades and while it keeps them together it also tears them apart. Two people constantly trying to do the right thing for themselves and everyone around them. Their love both enriches and damages the lives of their circle.
I really enjoyed the yearly review at the beginning of each chapter. The format of the book really made it take flight. The narrator switches splint of view seamlessly throughout the book.
I’ve never cried so hard are the end of a book. I knew in the first chapter that I was going to feel all the feelings and never want it to end. I can’t find one thing I didn’t like about this book. I have already gifted several copies to family and friends.
Bravo, Elin Hilderbrand. You have another success!!
Another great Elin Hilderbrand. Great descriptions of setting and characters. Would be perfect for a sequel, Erin does it again! Perfect for a day spent outside reading.
This book was by one of my favorite authors and did not disappoint. I read it in one day as I could not put it down. The characters were lifelike and their stories were inviting and enthralling. A great beach or patio read.
28 Summers is the newest entry in Elin Hildebrand's portfolio and certainly one of the best. It opens with 19-year-old Link following his mother's instructions, discovers an envelope in the drawer with the instruction, "Please call." In side is a phone number, no name, simply this phone number. The ensuing chapters retrace the history for the past 28 years, with the top of the paragraph recounting all the momentous things happening at the time: music, movies, politics, weather, et al. He makes the call and the man at the other end directs him to tell his mother that he is coming. "Same Time, Next Year," was on the television the evening I went into labor with my first child. It is a good memory. This book mimics that relationship in some ways. It is a heartbreaker.
I was in tears for at least half of the book. When Link became the son of an unwed mother; when his mother, Mallory, had love affairs and other relationships; when he visited his dad and when he didn't, who his mother never married; and when he had his own love affair. It is about life. Her life was different than my life and probably different than yours but it is the life she chose. How special is that? She was independent...what she always wanted. She was loved...also what she always wanted. This story will break your heart. It did mine. This review does not do 28 Summers justice. I don't have the words. I recommend it.

28 Summers is about a "Same Time Next Year" couple, who meet up on Nantucket Island every Labor Day weekend. Elin Hilderbrand has a way of putting you right in the middle of her stories. The characters were well developed and the descriptions of the scenery were fantastic. It made me want to visit Nantucket! I also loved how she started each chapter/"summer" with current events and important information relevant to that particular year. It added a touch of nostalgia for anyone old enough to remember those events. If you cannot stomach infidelity, I would stay away from this book. Otherwise, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and look forward to delving into more of her backlist.

I want to start by saying I am SUCH a huge fan of Elin Hilderbrand's books. I love the settings, the storylines and I absolutely adore the characters. Her books have provided me with countless escapes to the beach, and anything new Elin comes out with, I will be reading!
This book was no exception. I loved the characters-Mallory and Jake, their friends and families, and the plot-Mallory and Jake meet through her brother one labour day weekend vacation, which ends up going wrong. But Mal and Jake enjoy each others' company so much, they decide to become each others "Same Time Next Year". For summers they carry on this tradition-one weekend a year, an affair in Nantucket that lasts through other relationships, marriages, children and big life events. This book gave me all the feels. It was bittersweet, heartbreaking and downright unfair at times, but I loved every word of it. 5 stars for me!
Mallory and Jake meet Labor Day weekend 1993. They decide to meet again the next year, and the next. They start a tradition: burgers with corn Friday night, an hydrangea in a vase, Chinese food Sunday night. They will meet again, "no matter what." They agree the only time they will ever talk by phone to each other is in case of "engagement, marriage, pregnancy, or death."
Things come up that threaten to prevent their cherished weekend together. A best friend is getting married. Someone in the family has something that cannot be re-scheduled. What can they do? Can they keep their meetings a secret?
I absolutely loved this book. Hilderbrand brings in other characters that we enjoy knowing about. Ten stars out of five!
Thanks so much to Little, Brown and Company for the privilege of reading 28 Summers through Netgalley.
While Hilderbrand's books are always reliable, this one was a tearjerker. One weekend may be long enough to read this book, but it's not for the characters! True love separated by circumstance is a trope that I can read again and again. Highly recommend!
5 stars is NOT enough for this book! I absolutely loved each and every moment of this book! It was an interesting perspective. Being as though I am just a tad younger than the characters I enjoyed reminiscing with each new paragraph (read it.... you will know what I mean). Elin writes such awesome books and I cannot wait to visit Nantucket just so I can visit all of these places she talks about.
The characters are loveable, and there really isn't one that you won't love! This is a pretyt long book, but I was able to read it very quickly because I did not want to put the book down.
Wowwww wow wow, 28 Summers has moved to the top of my favorite @elinhilderbrand books. I devoured this book- I wanted to keep reading, but also didn’t want it to end 🙃 it centers around Mallory and her brother Cooper’s fraternity brother Jake. One Labor Day weekend ends up becoming a yearly Same Time, Next Year meeting, and we get filled in on life in between. I just can’t adequately express how much I loved it, and the beginning of the chapters has a “things we’re talking about in xxxx year” and it was so nostalgic. Most importantly, WE NEED TO DISCUSS THE ENDING... IMMEDIATELY. This is easily the best book I’ve read in a while ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
28 Summers by Elin Hilderbrand is a summer-themed contemporary that many will enjoy. The concept is interesting, although may not be one for those who don’t enjoy the love triangle theme. The story is well-written and the characters are intriguing, however it is hard to root for them.
If you are a fan of the author’s previous works, this is one book to look forward to this summer. The Nantucket setting and the various summers that the main characters have come together for make for a perfect beach read. Each summer is prefaced with an historical description of the various social and political happenings as well, which adds some interest to the timeline.
❀ LOVE TRIANGLE THEME
Having never watched the film Same Time, Next Year, I went into this book expecting a story of friendship. However, the theme is a love triangle where two lovers agree to meet at the same time each year for a sexual rendezvous. This is something that I found difficult to understand as the story progresses and both Mallory and Jake have their own lives with significant others.
❀ HARD TO ROOT FOR MAIN CHARACTERS
While I did enjoy the characters of both Jake and Mallory, I found it increasingly harder to feel any sort of emotion for them. The fact that they are trying to deceive everyone in their lives to maintain a tradition where they cheat on others once a year lessened my enjoyment of this book. There is far too much time spent reasoning why this is fine to do and no consequences for the characters’ actions.
❀ CLASSIC HILDERBRAND
If love triangles and infidelity are themes that don’t bother you as a reader, 28 Summers by Elin Hilderbrand will be an enjoyable book for you. The setting is ideal for a summer backdrop and the writing is classic Hilderbrand.
This entertaining story is based on the movie SAME TIME NEXT YEAR, in that the two protagonists spend Labor Day weekend together every year, and then do not speak the rest of the year. Mallory inherits a cabin on the beach of Nantucket, along with some money to support it, when she is in her early twenties. The first time she celebrates Labor Day at the cabin, her brother brings his friends there for a bachelor party. Problems arise, tempers flare, and everyone leaves early except Jake. So begins Mallory's once-a-year relationship with Jake that lasts for 30 years. Each chapter of the book represents one year of the 30. I like the way each chapter starts with "What are we talking about in 1993?" and then lists topics and people making news that year. It is a very effective way to set the scene. I'm not sure I accept the reasons given for the lovers not getting together permanently, but the book is a fun read, Thanks to NetGalley and Little, Brown, and Company for providing an ARC.
28 summers was my first Elin Hinderbrand book. Let me tell you, it did not disappoint. From the first chapter I fell in love with the characters. Mallory and Jake’s love story was one for the ages (quite literally). I wish I could have gotten more moments with them throughout the book, but I think Elin did a great job with balancing their visits each year and their lives outside of that one weekend a year. I will definitely be recommending this book to others!
This book was an overall delight. Elin Hilderbrand never fails to disappoint a surface-level, pleasurable read. Perfect for a sunny day at the beach or by the pool. Elin's writing and character development is spot on, and her ability to weave between timelines never disappoints! I would recommend over and over again!
Books like this frustrate me so much. I don't like the infidelity aspect, and I hate when people are in love but seemingly can't get it together and just be with each other. Instead, we are supposed to feel nostalgic that they can get together for one weekend every year and continue their love affair. I'm just not the right audience for this.
Elin Hilderbrand does it again! I absolutely loved this story. She manages to make a premise that could feel gross into something romantic and complicated. Her historical details and references are fun, and perfectly capture the setting each year that the characters meet. It's another perfect summer read and continues the trend of her last few releases showing a bit more depth. Highly recommend.
