Really more like 4.5 stars for me. This is only the second book I’ve read by Elin Hilderbrand. I definitely need to be reading more of them! I really enjoyed this one. I loved the characters. The descriptions of the places and people of Nantucket were great. The cottage provided the perfect setting. I loved all of the openings of each paragraph with what was going on in each year. I kind of wish I hadn’t known what was going to happen at the very beginning though. All in all a great summer read. Thank you to NetGalley and Little, Brown & Company for granting access to this book in exchange for an honest review. I will post this review today to my Bookstagram and companion Facebook page @thatreadingrealtor.
This story follows an unconventional relationship in which Mallory and Jake get together every Labor Day weekend in Nantucket no matter what. This book is told in the perspective of every summer but provides background information of what Mallory or Jake might have been doing that year/summer leading up to Labor Day weekend.
I absolutely loved this book. I loved that it took place on Nantucket Island as it is the perfect beach read for the summer. A great read that will leave you feeling all the emotions.
Thank you to Netgalley for the e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
Another summer story from the queen of beach reads. Not one to shy away from difficult and imperfect characters, this is another dive into multiple lives that are interconnected and real. All are human, perfectly imperfect.
Mallory met her brother Cooper's fraternity brother, Jake, the first summer that she moved into a cottage on Nantucket. Cooper, Mallory, Mallory's best friend at the time, Leland, Jake, and Fray, another friend to Cooper. Their lives intersect and interact throughout the next 28 years- through careers, marriages, divorces, children.
I loved the voice in this story, "our girl Mallory, and she is our girl"... And the reminders of what was happening in each year.
Probably my new favorite Elin book!!
I have been waiting for this book since I read about it several months ago. IT was worth the wait and I loved every word. There were no perfect characters, but they are all believable and some are unforgettable.
Great beach read
Another great read from Elin Hildebrand just in time for summer. It is an examination of the various faces of marriage /relationships, alternately snappy, romantic and bittersweet.
Thank you to the publisher for a time limited earc via netgalley. This review is my own opinion.
The Queen of Summer is back at it again, and dare I say, this is her best one yet.
Mallory Blessing is hosting her brother’s bachelor party on her first Labor Day weekend at her new cottage on Nantucket when she officially meets Jake McCloud. After that first weekend, they’re both “complete goners” in their feelings for each other. Alas, life gets in the way when neither is willing to compromise their wants and needs to explore the relationship outside of Labor Day weekend. Even so, both promise to meet the same time, next year (based on the 1978 film), no matter what.
I was INVESTED in this beautiful, poignant story! I mean, staying up until 4AM, forgetting about my glass of wine on the coffee table, invested. I laughed, I cried, I loved these characters like I haven’t loved in a while. There is certainly some moral ambiguity to this story, but all is fair in love, right?
I was partial to this book after the very first chapter when Jake McCloud had a South Bend, IN area code; I’m from South Bend, IN too! All very personal to me, but I adored the mentions of Jefferson Middle School, Potawatomi Pool, Notre Dame, Howard Park ice skating trail and pond, Barnaby’s Pizza (my roommate’s favorite), and Chocolate Charlie (my favorite). Woot woot!
My only constructive criticism is that I would have loved to see some of the more diverse characters play prominent roles.
Thank you so much to Elin Hilderbrand, Little Brown and Company, Hachette Audio, Erin Bennett, Libro.fm, and NetGalley for the ALC and ARC copies!
All my romance and beach read lovers, go buy this book right now! I even ordered a physical copy today.
What a delight! I loved this book. I can be a little up and down on Elin Hilderbrand books. Some can be a little fluffy for my taste, but not 28 Summers. As the book begins in 2020, we learn where the story ends. Mallory Blessing, a woman the reader will come to love, is dying. Her 19-year old son is tasked with contacting a man he has no idea his mother even knows. From there the story travels back 28 years to the Labor Day Weekend Mallory first met Jake McCloud.
Make no mistake about it, this is a love story in the best possible way. Throughout, we get to know Mallory and Jake and people in both their lives. We learn the reasons they stay apart and the reasons they can’t let go. Each chapter is a year that Elin Hilderbrand smartly begins with a list of the highlights of that year: news, politics, entertainment, songs, etc. It was a great way for her to ground her story and keep the reader in touch with the world her characters occupied. Each chapter also featured a different character, mainly Mallory and Jake, but others, too: Mallory’s brother, her best friend, Jake’s wife. All this made 28 Summers, a complex, moving story of life long love. Based on the classic “Same Time Next Year” movie, Elin Hilderbrand ran with it and made it her own. There was one chapter about Jake’s wife that threw me a little and wish had been handled differently, but that’s really the only flaw for me. I predict that 28 Summers will be THE beach read book this year. Pick it up. You’ll be glad you did!
Note: I received copies of this book from Hachette Audio (via Libro.fm), and from Little, Brown and Company (via NetGalley) in exchange for my honest review.
I have read all of Elin's books and remember very few that have brought me to tears. 28 Summers pulled on my heartstrings and brought all emotions to the surface for me. The plot of the story was carefully developed and I loved the "summary of the year" before each summer. Though you may not agree with the situation, each character was so well developed and likable. Fantastic work, Elin!
Elin writes in such a way that you feel you're right there in Nantucket and actually know the characters. I was really looking forward to this book and it certainly did not disappoint.
The flashback or recap at the beginning of each chapter was a nice touch and I found myself reflecting on my own memories of the year. The rich description of food and the island makes me feel I'm there (or need to go there!) and I just love her writing style and how it pulls me in wanting more.
The characters are rich, their stories and experiences are heartfelt and relatable. This, quite possibly, is one of my favourite books of hers. While there is some infidelity (which I'm not the biggest fan of), I still found myself understanding and relating to all of the characters involved even cheering them on in their journey to happiness.
Highly recommend reading this book. It is the most perfect summer read!
PUB DAY for 28 Summers! Thank you to @librofm and @netgalley for the chance to read/listen to Elin’s new book!

As always, Elin’s new book was a quintessential summer read, making me want to pack my bags and head to Nantucket STAT. I love that about her books. She’s the ultimate escape novelist.

This book centers on Jake and Mallory who have a “same time next year” every Labor Day weekend. This goes on for 28 years, BUT LIKE WHY AREN’T YOU JUST TOGETHER ALL THE TIME?! Jake couldn’t stand his wife and Mallory was single, COME ON PEOPLE. I tried so hard to not be annoyed at this but maybe infidelity is a TW for me? Maybe I’m a hopeless romantic and also PRACTICAL? Idk. Still enjoyed it though, and I loved how current/historical events were woven into the story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5.
t all started the weekend of her brothers first bachelor party. Well, it actually started with many phone calls during their college years, but this is when they first meet. Mallory and Jake are meant to be together, there is just one problem. Jake is in a relationship, and then a marriage. They will always have Labor Day weekends though.
I am having a hard time reviewing this one. I really enjoyed the story overall, and I loved that each summer started with “what we are talking about it x year.” It reminded me that the kindle came out in 2008. When talking to people about my love of kindle I always mention I had the first one and fell in love immediately, but now I know I have loved kindle for 12 years! My issue with this one was the same time next year aspect. I loved Jake and Mallory, and of course wanted to them to be together. Did that make it ok for Jake to cheat on his wife for 28 years? I still really enjoyed this one but I def had to look past that aspect.
A romance spanning 28 years of summers sounds like a great idea for a book, but sadly I didn’t care for this one. The main characters carry on a relationship despite Jake being married to another woman who he didn’t have the courage to break up with before marriage. Mallory supposedly loves Jake yet she sees no problem with having sex with her brother’s friend at her brother’s wedding, leading to pregnancy. Both main characters seem very shallow and self-absorbed, which made it impossible for me to be in favor of their relationship.
Thanks go to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you to Netgalley and Elin Hilderbrand for my advanced copy of 28 Summers for an honest review. This is probably my favorite book by Elin Hilderbrand. I loved everything about this story. From the same time every year plot, to the detail character development. Mallory and Jack meet one summer on Nantucket and continue to meet yearly. They have the same routine when they see each other, and year after year they get closer and closer to getting caught. All the supporting characters play a role in the weekend happening and it amazing to see how it unfolds. This was a five star read for me. #malloryandjakeforever I would recommend this book to friends and family. I also recommended it on Instagram
28 Summers is absolutely one of the best books I have ever read! Elin Hilderbrand did not disappoint with this one. I can relate to Mallory on so many levels. I really came to dislike Jake as the book went on; however, the ending was perfect. This is a great summer read, and I will definitely be recommending it to my reader friends. I look forward to Elin's next book! She is definitely a go-to author for me!
Wow - this book made me laugh, smile, and cry. I am so impressed! I've read other Elin Hilderbrand books and enjoyed them for what they were, but this one is on an entirely different level. The story, the writing - it's all fantastic!
The blurbs at the start of each chapter did their job of reminding me exactly what was happening and on my mind in each given year - giving song lyrics, character names on a hit TV series, and other nostalgia put my brain in exactly the right place to start each year of Mallory's life.
I could not read this book fast enough - I was invested hook, line, and sinker from the very beginning!
Highly recommended, especially as a summer read in 2020 when we all need to escape a bit!
This was a perfect summer read. I absolutely loved the current events at the beginning of each chapter/year. While I didn't fully understand the characters motivation for having a "Same Time, Next Year" relationship, Elin Hildebrand did a great job of telling this story. I have already told several people that they have to read it.
Another great summer read from Elin Hilderbrand featuring, of course, Nantucket..Since neither Mallory or Jake are prepared to change their lives for the sake of love, Marriage, children, careers and family do not get in the way of their meeting for three days every year to continue a love affair.
Loved this book. It was a different writing style from previous Elian Hilderbrand books but I felt connected to the characters. Such a unique story that was very well developed! Thanks for the arc of this book!
Beautiful love story but so bitter sweet. I wanted so much more for Jake & Mallory. And yes I ended up with tears in my eyes at the end. Elin Hilderbrand has written another 5 star book!
So many thanks to NetGalley, Little, Brown & Company, and Elin Hilderbrand for the opportunity to read, review and tell everyone about her latest novel. You know when you pick up a Hilderbrand book that you will get a wonderful escape read set on Nantucket Island. But this book was so much more.
Inspired by the movie Same Time, Next Year, this is the story of Mallory and Jake. Mallory was barely making it in NYC when she got the news that her Aunt Greta left her some money and her Nantucket cottage. Without a look back, Mallory moved and started her new life. When her brother, Cooper, wanted to have his bachelor party at her cottage, Mallory welcomed him and his friends, including Jake, who Mallory had always had a crush on. From that moment on, things were never the same for the two of them. Their lives were complicated but they decided to live out their love for a long weekend every year, no matter what.
There is so much I loved about this book - I loved the preface to each chapter being what was happening that year in the world. Many are instantly recognizable; some I had to look up which added to the fun and remembering. I loved the mention of popular books and movie woven into the chapters. I loved that the point of view went from person to person and even included an anonymous narrator looking in. This book was so touching and uniquely-written that I was so sorry when I finished it. Grab your tissues but do not miss this book when it publishes on June 16th! Very highly recommended for a nostalgic, touching read.
