I am so grateful to Netgalley and Little, Brown and Company for the ARC which I received in exchange for an honest review. I couldn't believe how lucky I was to get approved to read a book I'd being looking forward to all year.
(SW at the end of this review)
I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy a story about infidelity taking place one weekend a year for "28 Summers", but I really loved it! I loved the beginning of each chapter/year, which reviewed historical facts for the year. The book covered a lot of time, and a lot of Labor Day weekends, but as usual Hildebrand did so masterfully. The story flowed beautifully. I enjoyed the characters and their strengths and foibles as they navigated through their sometimes messy lives, I always love being transported to Nantucket (although I have never been in real life!)
It was fun hearing about the characters' teenage children Link and Bess (will we get another book about their relationship please?) I love when details about teenagers remind me that my own are "normal".
The ending of the book, although sad, helped me as I process the death of my own mother two weeks ago after a week in hospice. I have realized we don't talk enough about death and although awful, it's important. So thank you Elin Hildebrand for that.
I highly recommend this book!
Another smash from Elin Hilderbrand. I grappled with the central idea of this novel- two adults, one of whom is married for the majority of the story- spending Labor Day weekend together every year for 28 summers. However, as the novel progressed, I found that much of the genius in the book is centered on confronting your feelings over this arrangement. Initially I thought “if they’re in love, why don’t they just get married?” But it really isn’t that simple.
The story is woven perfectly, with snapshots of the important developments over 28 years, intertwined with Labor Day weekend each summer. Covering that much ground, a book could easily become too long or not provide characters with enough depth, but Elin is a master and she manages to attach you to everyone in the book without drawing it out. I think this one will make an excellent book club choice for the conundrums it presents.
Mallory Blessing's story arrives in 28 chapters, each with a note about what happened that year. It is a bit of history and pop culture combined. Mallory inherited her aunt's cottage on a beach in Nantucket, MA, when she was a young adult. Mallory always loved the beach cottage even though she has only visited once. Life changed for her—Mallory dove into a blissful state of happiness with her cabin and some money to help.
The significant people in Mal's life included her brother Cooper and best friend, Leland. Once settled in her island life, she preferred not to visit back home in Baltimore. Coop asked if he could have his bachelor party at her place, and that night changed her forever. Mallory met Jake McCloud, Coop's college friend. Their meeting would turn into a year-long wait to see each other on Labor Day weekend. They both counted the days but did nothing to change their lives for the rest of the year.
Jake had a girlfriend, Ursula, who he had known since he was a child. He wasn't willing to give her up, not quite yet. Mallory would never leave Nantucket. They made up their minds and cherished each yearly weekend with their traditions and rituals, mostly unchanged over 28 years.
Both Mallory and Jake had children, a bit of a mystery there for a new reader to discover. Mallory's son, Link, was the love of her life and proved to be a brilliant mother. Link knew his father, but as he grew up, he wanted to visit him less and less. This novel read like a real love story, spread out over 28 years. Jake and Mallory's love for each other is joyful to imagine with the author's description. It is a story that could play out in real life for anyone.
I hope the summer readers of EH's latest novel enjoy each page. I did. Thank you to the author, Little, Brown and Company, and NetGalley for the chance to read this e-ARC with a publish date of June 16th.
I read this book in 2 sittings. Elin Hilderbrand had me hooked right from the very start. I loved the way she introduced each chapter by reminding readers what was happening in that particular year. 28 Summers follows Mallory through, as you guessed it, 28 summers of a love affair with her brother's fraternity brother. We follow them through job changes, marriage, children and death. While I enjoyed this book very much, the more I thought about Mallory's life, the sadder I became. Spoiler alert! While she never cheated on any partners, her lover cheated on his wife over and over again. I wish Mallory had been a little stronger. Fans of Hilderbrand will eat up this beach read.
this is my first book by the author, and now I can see why she has such a following. I wasn’t expecting this book to be my cup of tea, I’ve seen her covers at the library before and always passed them, but boy was I wrong. This book sucked me in. I loved the characters, the story line, how we travel through each year from 1993 to present. Have tissues ready for the end.
You will cheer all the way through this book for Jake and Mallory to win out and stay together.....28 Summers of a near perfect love. The author uses the beginnings of most chapters relating historical and then modern "snippets" to draw you in and I personally felt like I was part of the story. Their "same time, next year; no matter what" agreement made me pause at first and then I was all in for them, then it broke my heart at times....I was all over the place to be honest but it made me love the story no less! The setting in Nantucket was enviable, I wanted to live in Mallory's home!!!! And in the end I was laughing, crying and experiencing every emotion possible right along with the characters. I now want to read alllll of Elin Hilderbrand's books!
I appreciate NetGalley for providing an advanced copy of this book for an honest review. I enjoy all of Elin Hilderbrand's books and hoped this one would be no different. 28 Summers didn't disappoint. It has all the makings of a great summer beach read (or anytime read) Mallory and Jake have a Same-Time-Next-Year arrangement and meet each year for one long weekend. They've met over 28 summers as life goes on for each of them the rest of the year. I enjoyed the way Hilderbrand laid out the chapters. This was a fun read you'll definitely enjoy.
Where to begin? Another summer read about Nantucket by Elin Hilderbrand, and in this one, I find she is pushing the envelope a little. This might seem like another lighthearted read, but as with Summer of '69, this one delves a little deeper in the character development and isn't your usual "summer renters stocking up on wine and heading out to The Chicken Box' story.
I won't get into what the book is about as if you are reading this review, you liked the abstract enough to delve further into what people thought about it. And here's what I thought about it.
While books about cheating hit home personally for me, I can understand her use of it in this story. Part of me just wanted Mallory and Jake to just pitch it in and agree to be together, but I can understand that perhaps the reason they worked Same Time Next Year is because they didn't have that year-round time together. So instead of having a 28-year relationship they technically were only together for 84 days, which is shy of 3 months.
I don't recommend this as a beach read because crying while reading it will either a)make the sunscreen run off your face and give you a streaky burn or b) your tears will mix into mud when they hit the sand. You have been warned.
Elin Hilderbrand is the absolute QUEEN of summer reads and she brings it in 28 Summers!! This follows one couple over the course of 28 summers on Nantucket, where they plan to meet up for one weekend every summer. I loved that every chapter starts out with a quick list of the largest topics of each year – including politics, pop culture, and everything in between. I also loved that the story gave glimpses into the lives of the characters outside of that one weekend a year – we may catch up with them during the summer, holidays or some other time during the year! We also get perspectives from characters outside of the couple, which was fascinating. And we get some cameos of Hilderbrand’s other characters, including the Quinn family from the Winter Street series and the Blue Bistro restaurant! The story covers so much and yet I still wanted more!!
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
We have spent 19 summers at our lake home in Minnesota, purchasing it when we could barely afford it in 2001. Reading Elin Hilderbrand's book 28 Summers made me nostalgic for all the years we have loved this place, raised out family here, and been so happy.
Mallory Blessing inherits her aunt's home in Nantucket, "and make no mistake, Mallory is our girl; we're with her here and through the good, the bad, and the damn-near hopeless."
This book has everything I love: the beach, young love, old love, teachers, politics, history, weddings. and it's all wrapped up in a fabulous story. I think it is my favorite Elin Hilderbrand book yet - and that's saying something! I will be thinking about Jake and Mallory all summer.
And just a couple comments: I absolutely love the name Ursula de Gournsey for the eveil twist and also Stone Cavendish for the obvious reasons. I also love how each chapter starts with a refresher course on what happened in that year. It's just perfect. I inhaled it. And now I need to read it again, slowly. The last chapters had me literally bawling with tears running down my face. Thanks to @netgalley @elinhilderbrand and also @librofm for sharing an advance copy of this book that comes out June 16th. You will absolutely love it.
5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Loved it very much . The BEST of Elin Hildebrand. A story of many summers of memories we all knew. Each chapter starts with memories of that year. Loved Mallory, Coop,Jake, Link only 2 I didn’t care for. Such a book of love, friendships, siblings and boy she knows Nantucket. Felt I was there. Highly recommend this one. Thank you Little Brown and Company and Netgalley for giving me this chance.
This is not normally my cup of tea but as a beach read that gave me some feels, it worked. Overall I was interested in the characters and the plot engaged me for the most part. It fit the mold and was enjoyable for what it was.
28 Summers by Elin Hilderbrand tells the tale of a couple who meet "same time next year" every Labor Day weekend. However, their love story elicits overwhelming feelings of nostalgia that are difficult to put into words. Hilderbrand has included so many familiar characters, and places from her previously published novels are popping up too. Mallory, Jake and the gang of family and friends are a likable group of relatable characters experiencing normal life, but Hilderbrand reveals their stories and relationships so carefully and thoughtfully, I was completely pulled in.
This novel reminds me of the beginnings of social media, where it almost feels like I am reconnecting with people I know but had forgotten about, much like Jake when he joins Facebook for the first time. I am not sure I've ever experienced this feeling before, but the book is lovely, and I didn't want to put it down. It takes a talented storyteller to make a reader feel emotionally connected to/invested in people they have not met and a place many have never visited before, yet thanks to her, I do. How peculiar yet satisfying. If you are an Elin fan, I bet you'll love their story too. Thank you so much to #NetGalley for the opportunity to preview #28Summers by @elinhilderbrand - she hit it right out of the park this time!
Elin Hilderbrand never disappoints. Her books always hit a sensitive spot for me no matter what. It was easy to identify with Mallory the main character since she was a teacher, This was a great love story filled with so many mixed emotions,
I loved this book! As a diehard Elin Hilderbrand reader, this one did not disappoint! Probably one of my favorites of all her titles. Elin has a way with characters. She creates such strong, relatable and lovable characters. I always feel invested in their lives. I could not put this one down and finished it in one day! Would highly recommend.
This book is definitely one of my favorites by Elin Hilderbrand! The emotional ride that I experienced with all of these characters made this a story that I won’t soon forget. I loved the relationship between Mallory and Jake (obviously) but I was shocked to become so invested in the lives of EVERY character in this book. This was definitely and very character-driven novel and I absolutely loved seeing how each character developed over the course of many years. The relationships between the characters were so real and raw that I felt like I knew each of them personally. Highly, highly recommend!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
I posted about this on IG and on my blog. Details provided to the publisher in the next round of this process
What will I be talking about during the Summer of 2020? How in her twenty-fifth novel, Elin Hilderbrand once again takes me to Nantucket and leaves me an emotional wreck.
Inspired by the film Same Time, Next Year, 28 Summers tells the tale of Mallory Blessing and Jake McCloud who meet one Labor Day weekend in Nantucket, the chemistry is instantaneous but each person recognizes they are different places in their lives and agree that each year they will reunite in that last week of August. As each year passes, their love survives amidst all the changes that life throws in their way.
I wouldn't have thought this book would have created such tumultuous feelings within but it did. A story about an affair between two people shouldn't make me cry but it has. I couldn't help but be pulled into Mallory and Jake's lives and I did want them to finally be together. As each year passes and Hilderbrand relates the news events that had us talking each of those 28 years, it seemed like time had stopped itself.
Make sure to use lots of sunscreen because this beach read is going to keep you glued to your towel!
Thanks to Netgalley and Little, Brown and Company for an egalley in exchange for an honest review.

Elin Hilderbrand has, once again, proven why she is the best at what she does. "28 Summers" is a thought-provoking, warmly emotional novel filled with humor, romance, and inspiration. Mallory Blessing, the main character, is a single-mom who learns about true love, and that it can be found through friendship, romance, and even motherhood. This beach read was highly compelling and I enjoyed it immensely.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
Elin Hilderbrand's books seem to never disappoint. They are the perfect "beach read." In her latest book, 28 Summers, she has yet again done a wonderful job of describing her characters. These characters are making some bad decisions, yet you can't help but root for them because they seem so human and likable. I have read several Hilderbrand books now, and I will continue to look forward to anything new she writes. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
