This is a great read for the summer, on par with her previous summer beach releases. During a summer where travel is limited, this is a great read for your own kiddie pool in the backyard.
Summer arrives with a new Hilderbrand novel. This book has arrived at just the right time. As a fan of the old movie Same Time Next Year, this has a similar story line. Young man and woman meet in Nantucket, while at the time both are single yet living in different places, a serious of events find them alone and drawn to each other. When other things change they agree to meet the same weekend each year and for 3 days each year they love each other, recreating some of their original weekend and forgetting the rest of the world. 28 Summers is a long time, and as you can imagine much in their lives change. I loved Mallory and Jake, and this book is just fabulous! Five stars for great story, and really great character development and pure escapist reading.
I love Elin and I loved this book! I loved that it used politics and current events while also maintaining being a beach read that was entirely entertaining. The only qualm I have with any book about a "same time next year" concept is why don't the two people just be together?!
Hildrebrand does it again!! She manages to create an unconventional love story that spans decades with a cast of characters that I would love to hang out with at a dinner party! This is the perfect poolside or quarantine read for my demographic.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Some of Ms. HIlderbrand's books have been misses for me but this one was a real hit! We are about the same age and appear to have children of similar ages also, The flashbacks over the years resonated so much - so much I had forgotten. Many events that seemed like yesterday and I did such a double take when I looked at the dates that they corresponded to- really made me realize how sometimes the days drag but the years fly by. The parts where the college drop off happened literally brought me to ugly tears as we are approaching this day (hopefully with covid) with my own daughter. I did find the relationship between Jake and Ursula really puzzling She was an extremely smart person but truly unlikeable in all of her interpersonal relationships- just did not understand the connection at all. I enjoyed the beautiful descriptions of Nantucket Island. I have never been but always finish her books hoping that I will make it there one day. I think this is always where her books shine the most. You take almost taste the colors and smell the appetizing food. As a fellow foodie I always appreciate the way the food is almost like another character. Really enjoyed this read- I felt that there was little more depth to this book than just a a summer beach read but then I feel that fiction by women is sometimes dismissed in that way. There is a lot more in this book and I enjoyed every minute.
Thank you to NetGalley for the Advanced Reader Copy of this high coveted book!
This was a fast read and so interesting the way she lists what is happening during each year. I flew through this book. I do don’t like it as much as her Winter series but it’s just because I like family sagas more. Romance isn’t my favorite, however, I would recommend this book! Thank you Netgalley for the privilege of reading this.
The quintessential Hilderbrand summer reading book. Mallory and Jake meet one summer on Nantucket and despite their mutual attraction, each goes on to live their own separate lives, meeting only once a year for 28 summers. If you like Hilderbrand or summer books set in summery places, this one is for you
Thank you to NetGalley and Hatchette Book Group for providing me with the digital ARC of 28 Summers in exchange for an honest review. I was really looking forward to reading Elin Hilderbrand’s newest summer romance. Disappointingly, it was only ok for me. I thought the cast of characters lacked moral compass. Jake is portrayed as a “good guy,” but honestly is just using Mallory for his yearly transgressions. Mallory is ok with getting involved with other men, but can’t totally commit because she loves Jake. How in love can you be when, in 28 Years, you’ve only seen (and communicated with) the person a total of 84 days?? Plus that ending, ugh.
Have you ever seen the movie "Same Time Next Year"? Picture that you meet the person of your dreams, but you can't stay together as a couple. You decide to meet up with each other at the same time and place each year. The book opens in 202o, but then goes back in time for the past 28 years.
Meet the two main characters, Jack and Mallory, It's their love story and told by a narrator who updates us on their life at the beginning of each chapter. There are characters that will annoy you, but I really just wanted to live the summer in Nantucket with Jack and Mallory. This is a lighthearted story that is a great book to get your mind off of everything by the pool. It took me away to the beach and let me dream for awhile.
I would recommend this book to my friends, and I was given this book for my honest review.
This was Elin’s best! I’ve read all of her pieces, and she’s the queen of the beach read. There’s no fluff. It’s raw, interesting, thought provoking, and an instant page turner!! Elin never disappoints!
First, let me thank netgalley and the publishers for approving my request for an early release of this book. All reviews of my netgalley books can be found on goodreads and youtube. Please be sure to check out the links attached.
I was very excited to read this book but I am afraid I will have an unpopular opinion. I think when you have such a grand audience its important to wonder how you can influence your readers, it almost made it seem like the situation yearly was ok, no matter what. Elin is a great writer. I love how easy her writing is to read. It was the content and the cheating that actually made me sick to my stomach. I had to stop reading. So I didn't finish. I hope she writes a book from her that is not focused on cheating. This book would have been beautiful if there was another reason like distance that kept them away not other people.
Hilderbrand takes us through 28 summers and the love affair of Mallory and Jake. Flawed, yet caring characters. The plot seems implausible, but it draws you in and keeps you wanting to know how it turns out. I did find myself feeling sorry for Mallory, even though she was a strong lead character.
My first Elin Hinderbrand novel, and it did not disappoint! I was immediately cheering for Mal and Jake, even though you wanted them to just get together already! The story was engaging and I wanted to know what happened each year. I enjoyed the yearly recap each year, reminding the readers what was happening in the world during that time. I also enjoyed how each year was not just all about the summer, but about what was happening in each of the characters' lives. Really enjoyed! Wanted Ursula to take a hike, but overall I loved this book!
I started this book a bit apprehensive. I just wasn’t sure I liked the whole concept. But by the time I finished I think this may be my FAVORITE Elin Hilderbrand book- which is saying a LOT because I am a big fan.
The way she weaves in the things happening in the world in each of these 28 summers while also telling a beautiful story was amazing. I couldn’t put it down.
I’ve read every single book @elinhilderbrand has written, but her newest book 28 SUMMERS is my absolute favorite! it’s the story of Jake and Mallory, who fall in love one weekend on Nantucket and promise to meet at the same cottage for one weekend every summer, no matter what. the book details their weekends together, but it mostly explores their lives apart from one another and how their “same time next year” affair affects them and those around them. I was totally absorbed into the story and the characters, and I actually cried at the end 😭 it was the perfect book to lose myself in for a few days at the beach. 5/5⭐️—I loved it!
Mallory Blessing meets Jake McCloud through her brother, Cooper. Jake is Coop's classmate at Johns Hopkins, and Mal and Jake speak on the phone several times before they finally meet on Nantucket Island in 1993. It's Labor Day weekend, and Mallory is hosting Cooper's bachelor weekend at her oceanfront cottage. Coop's two best friends, Jake and Fray, are along to celebrate. As fate would have it, Jake and Mallory are smitten with each other, and thus begins a relationship that spans the course of 28 summers. The lovers vow to spend every Labor Day weekend together thereafter at Mallory's cottage no matter what, ala the film: Same Time, Next Year.
Despite their individual circumstances and personal commitments, Jake and Mallory spend three glorious days together each year, escaping their everyday reality and deepening their bond. They share an idyllic existence at summer's end, albeit one fraught with moral ramifications.
28 Summers is an engaging story of friendship and love, with a bittersweet ending that left me in tears. Each chapter recounts developments in Mallory and Jake's respective lives, opening with a paragraph of headlining events related to each consecutive summer from 1993 to 2020--a nostalgic, contextual cultural trip down a collective memory lane. The novel provides the perfect summer "getaway," particularly for those who have cancelled their own vacation plans and are staying close to home.
This is the perfect backyard read of the summer.
Inspired by the movie (and play) Same Time, Next year, this is a captivating story of a couple who can't be together full time so they commit to meeting once a year over Labor Day no matter what comes along. This latest is one of Hilderbrand's best novels to date with a complex plot and intricate characterizations with a poignancy that brought me to a few tears at the end. And, of course, Hilderbrand's beloved Nantucket is featured although it's not as central to the story as many of her previous novels have been.
Perfect for fans of Jennifer Weiner, Dorothea Benton Frank, Nancy Thayer, and Mary Kay Andrews.
Any Elin Hilderbrand book is a perfect choice for a summer day beach read, or curled up under a blanket on a cold, dark day imagining you are in the midst of summer, off on some island. 28 Years brings us back to Nantucket year after year for a “same time next year” romance that weathers the storms of betrayal, children, deaths and true love. This was not a typical EH book, it was even better! The writing style was fantastic.
This time... next year. What starts in early adulthood evolves over time, past other relationships, through parenting. You see how Mallory and Jake stay connected.
This is the best type of beach read. Each chapter takes you back - if, like me, you grew up in the 90s-on, and takes you back as two lives intertwine and separate each year.
It will make you cringe, laugh, grimace, cry - and think about what you regret and what you treasure.
Thank you to Netgalley and to Little, Brown and Company for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
