A very fitting and emotional end to this trilogy. No matter how much I didn't want to see the end, Kagawa's Night of the Dragon takes the cake of the three books. She dropped us right into a battle, it is after all the Night of the Dragon. It's quick paced and interesting and emotional. There are as many revelations as there are losses, surprises as there are expected twists. There was just one character I wish had been developed further earlier, for his ending, ended too quick. Nonetheless, a perfect ending.
I was provided with a copy of this book by the publisher in order to provide and honest review.
Julie Kagawa is a best-selling author who has written many fantasy stories, my favourite being “The Talon Saga”.
“Night of the Dragon” is the third book in the author’s “The Shadow of the Fox” series. I have not read the other two books in the series.
The “Night of the Dragon” story has the reader following Yumeko and her companions, including the Shadow Clan assassin Kage Tatsumi, who is part human and part demon. Having the great first general of Jigoku, Hakaimono inhabit his body. Kage Tatsumi is neither himself, nor is he Hakaimono, he is not sure of who he is anymore.
But what Kage Tatsumi and Hakaimono will do, is find a way to work together to help Yumeko stop a powerful and mad blood mage use the Scroll of a Thousand Prayers to summon the Great Kami Dragon and make the last wish, letting the world become over run by demons and ultimately destroyed. Yet Kage Tatsumi and Hakaimono are also striving to separate themselves from each other and the cursed sword that has kept Hakaimono trapped for many, many years.
Yumeko and Kage Tatsumi will discover and witness many things they never thought possible, but they will also learn a lot about themselves. Yumeko will discover who she is and where she comes from, time will tell how she deals with the truths that have remained hidden from her for so long. If she is to survive and face the trials ahead of her, she must learn to overcome this and be who she was always meant to be.
Despite the odds seeming to be stacked against Yumeko, Kage Tatsumi and their friends they wont stop trying to prevent the spread of evil across the land and doing what they can to prevent the Great Kami Dragon from being summoned and the last wish being granted. Yet there is someone in the shadows, someone that is not yet seen or known, carefully moving them around like pawn in a game of chess. It will take great sacrifice and their combined efforts and love for each other to overcome this hurdle and prevail.
“Night of the Dragon” once again shows what a talented author Julie Kagawa is. I found this story to be an enthralling and captivating fantasy tale about kitsune, dragons, magic with a dash of love and sorrow. The characters were well written, believable and more importantly relatable. I felt as though I was there right along with Yumeko and Kage Tatsumi, fighting with them to stop the Great Kami Dragon from being called.
It was the prefect recipe that had the right amount of adventures, daring sword fights, sacrifice and romance.
A fantastic and pitch perfect conclusion to this captivating fantasy series. Inspired by Japanese myth and folklore, this series has the feel of an anime adventure and is the perfect read for fans of Sabaa Tahir and Renee Ahdieh ... and of course for all fans of Julie Kagawa!
Wow! What an ending to the Shadow of the Fox trilogy. This is my favourite book of the trilogy and it was such an amazing wrap up of the journey to protect the Dragon Scrolls. Yumeko, Tatsumi, Daisuke, Okame and Reika have formed such a beautiful unconventional family trying to save Iwagoto from the world of demons, ghosts and mythical beasts.
I loved the relationships between Yumeko and Tatsumi, and Okame and Reika and the love they have for each other.
I didn't know how this book was going to progress but it gave me surprise after surprise. It also left me in tears for the last few chapters so much so that I'm crying writing this review right now.
This really has progressed into a really amazing YA series that is different to a lot of the other options out there. I loved the Japanese mythology, I learnt about mythical creatures that are now the names of well known Japanese brands and I finished feeling like it was such a complete story.
Thanks to Netgalley.com and Harlequin Australia for allowing me to review this amazing story.
Yes, we got the ending that we needed from the book and the one that was destined, but at what cost.
"Do you think ... they'll tell stories of us ..."
"I hope so ... Or at least a tragic poem that will make everyone cry when they hear it"
Night of the Dragon is a fantastical end to the Shadow of the Fox series and Julie Kagawa has done it once again. Kagawa is not afraid to pull punches and deliver final blows, to which I am both equally thankful and heartbroken for. A good friend of mine told me that they'd seen that this book made many people sob, I foolishly thought that was an over-exaggeration on everyone elses parts, however now that I am finished I am aware that I was oh so wrong and I need to drink many glasses of water to rehydrate myself.
It's difficult to review the final book in a series without heading dangerously into spoiler territory, and I dislike writing reviews that include spoilers. Every hope that you hold for the characters that you have grown to love and know is fulfilled and then some, they are treated with such care and development that every action makes you feel like it's the action of a dear friend.
Just when you thought that you knew where every piece of this puzzle was going to fall, you get pipped at the post and everything changes. There are so many revelations in this novel, some beautiful and some terrible, that you are constantly walking the glorious edge awaiting to see where you end up. The mysticism and wonder in this novel is definitely something that I strongly associate with Kagawa's skills as a storyteller and world builder.
A lovely reprieve from the terrors of the current day-to-day moments.
Thank you to Harlequin Australia, HQ (Fiction, Non Fiction, YA) & MIRA and NetGalley for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
