Dark, savage and shocking, this is ideal for fans of action-packed police procedurals. It's the first book I've read in the series but found it worked fine as a standalone. Gina the detective is sympathetic, principled and devoted to getting justice done while juggling her home life. I found the sections in the killer's viewpoint sinister and uncomfortable to read but there's a clever twist at the end
Her Last Mistake By Carla Kovach
This book was a fantastic read, I really enjoyed it. This is book 6 in the series but the first book I've read by this author, I will go and get the rest of her books now! It reads perfectly well as a standalone book.
I really liked DI Gina Harte, and and looking forward to going back to the start of this series to learn more about her. I enjoyed the storyline and it kept me guessing right to the end. I love police procedural books, and felt this book was well written.
5/5 for me, this one kept me up late as I was enjoying it so much!!
This is the sixth instalment of the Detective Gina Hart series and yet another belter! This series never fails to disappoint and as usual, I devoured the book from the turn of the first page.
Holly Long is a bridesmaid at one of her best friend, Kerry’s wedding in a lavish hotel setting, hiding a secret from her friends that she is pregnant as the father does not want to know, after having enough of tipping alcohol into plants, she slopes off to her bedroom… and so it begins, Det Gina Hart is called in to investigate when Holly’s body is discovered in her bed having answered her door to someone but WHO…. Who would want to murder Holly and her unborn child… is it as simple as the soon to be father or does this factor in at all?
As the investigation develops, there are so many suspects, completely despicable vile creatures is one way that best describes some of them but when the body of Kerry’s other bridesmaid, Francesca is found murdered, is there a bridesmaid killer on the loose? Is Kerry in danger?
Another gripping investigative thriller from Carla Kovach, a complicated plot which weaves together perfectly to the big reveal and oh boy what a reveal… I did not see that one coming! This series is going from strength to strength and we are learning more about Hart’s personal life and it seems her relationship with her daughter may just be improving, here’s hoping! I look forward to the next instalment.
This is the sixth installment in the DI Gina Harte series, but you do not need to read the previous five in order to enjoy this story. I did not read the previous books before this one, and I felt that I was still able to fully integrate within in the story and not feel like I was missing key pieces of information.
From the first chapter, this book starts off with a bang. Holly Long is a twenty something in a clearly toxic relationship. When she finds out that she’s pregnant, rather than celebrate the joyous occasion, her significant other uses it as an opportunity to abuse her to show who is in power. One month later, Holly starts the day as a beautiful bridesmaid at her best friend’s wedding and ends up asphyxiated in her hotel room.
DI Gina Harte is finally enjoying time off with her daughter and granddaughter. Gina’s leave is abruptly ended when she’s called onto Holly’s case since no one else is available. Tension is already at an all time high with her daughter, and to make matters worse, Gina has to work with her former lover on the case. As Gina starts to uncover the details surrounding Holly’s death, secrets that even her closest friends come to the surface, and Gina must hurry to contain everything before anyone else becomes a target.
Wow, what an incredible story. This was an utterly addictive page turner that had me hanging off the edge of my seat. There were so many twists and turns as well as a few red herrings as Gina learns more the investigation. I was guessing up to the very last pages, which I loved.
I loved Gina’s character. She’s strong willed, whip smart, and refuses to let anyone or anything harm those she loves. She also isn’t afraid to let the evidence lead her to the answers even if the trail is not a popular one for everyone else.
This was my first foray into Carla Kovach’s writing and it most certainly will not be my last. I can’t wait to see what is next for DI Gina Harte.
Thank you to Bookouture for providing a review copy through NetGalley. This did not influence my review. All opinions are my own.
Here is my review of Her Last Mistake by Carla Kovach. It’s book six in the DI Gina Harte series which is set in Cleevesford.
Kerry, Holly, Francesca and Lilly have all been friends since school and named themselves the Awesome Foursome. They did virtually everything together. Kerry was engaged with her wedding imminent. Holly had secretly been seeing someone for a year but it had just recently finished. He wasn’t happy that she was pregnant, it didn’t fit with his plans but she was happy about it. Oh, how things could change in a matter of minutes. It was then she realised he was nothing like she thought he was. He nearly killed her with his hands around her throat! That scared her.
The wedding was in Crete with close family and friends attending. A bigger reception was held at Cleevesford Manor with Holly, Francesca and Lilly, all dressed in sage green bridesmaid dresses. There was a good crowd with a pop up beer bar. Holly was tipping her drinks out and not feeling great so went to bed early. A little while later there was a knock at her door. She opened it, she was punched in the nose, blood came gushing out and she was pushed into the room, back onto the bed. The attacker hit her on the head with the lamp while Holly begged for them not to kill her baby. They then smothered her with a pillow. Francesca found her a little while later when she realised Holly’s door wasn’t shut properly, she came rushing out, screaming.
DI Gina Harte got the call to attend the murder scene. When she arrived, she assessed the scene and asked the relevant questions, trying to work out how Holly got attacked. She hadn’t been dead long.
Holly lived in town in an old bank that had been refurbished into apartments and leaving the chip shop at the bottom. She lived on the top floor. Her apartment was furnished in expensive tastes and some of her clothes were not cheap either. She was not living within her means, she must have been getting extra money from somewhere. They needed to check her financials.
This was such an intriguing read, I was hooked and found it hard to put down. It was like being on a roller coaster ride only with a few twists and turns added in. I always enjoy Carla Kovach books. This is one of her best with a fantastic ending.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for this ARC.
This is my first read by this author. Even though it’s the 6th book in the Gina Harte series and there are brief references to previous events, this book can still be read on it’s own. I really enjoyed this book, I enjoy police procedurals and it had everything in that I like - murder, many suspects all with motive, glimpses into Detective Harts personal life and lots of twists and turns along the way. The book captured and held my attention from start to finish and I was shocked when I read who the murderer was, and why. I think this is a cleverly thought out and well written book by the author, and will look to read the previous books in this series. 4 stars
A murder at a wedding reception. is Detective Gina Harte and her team's latest case. One of the three bridesmaids has been strangled in her room. Soon after, a second is drowned. There are suspects aplenty, all with motive. But Gina is constantly frustrated by lack of evidence. The cases urgently needs to be solved.. She needs to find who wanted these girls dead. before they come after the third.
A hugely tense and gripping read which held me from page one. At no time did I guess who the culprit was. This has to be one of the best crime thrillers I've read.
I have read many police procedurals in the past 6 months, and I have to solemnly declare that author Carla Kovach's Gina Harte series is one of the best. The vibe it gave me was so welcoming that I never had a problem following the story from the previous book. Gina's writing is something different, there is magic in it. It is friendly yet suspenseful. It takes a truly talented writer to achieve that balance.
A murder or two of the bridesmaid got DI Gina Harte back from her holiday and her team to the investigation. Double trouble soon started when the professional life intersected with her daughter's.
The sixth book in the series, the murder investigation done by the team was still as enthusiastic and committed as the first book. The dark human psyche was explored, which made it all the more thrilling. Author Carla Kovach was brilliant. She could keep the pulse of the book palpable. I could feel the intensity as the team got closer to truth.
Emotions were felt right through I loved when DI Gina worked through it, staying committed to her job. Every corpse needed someone fighting for it, telling its story, revealing the truth. And I loved it when the author could achieve that via her characters. Truly a gripping read which kept me stuck to my kindle until I finished it.
My thanks to Bookouture for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘’Her Last Mistake’ by Carla Kovach in exchange for an honest review.
This is the sixth in her D.I. Gina Harte series of police procedurals set in the fictional Midlands town of Cleevesford.
Holly Long is smart and beautiful, a woman that most men find irresistible. Today she is a bridesmaid at her best friend’s wedding. As the lavish reception at Cleevesford Manor continues, Holly slips away and is later found strangled in her hotel room. Who would want her dead?
When the police search her apartment another side of Holly comes to light including a secret lover. There is no shortage of suspects including a number of gate-crashes at the reception. Then another bridesmaid is murdered!
This was a highly engaging whodunnit. Kovach provides enough background for new readers to the series with minimal references to old cases to avoid spoilers. It is a great series bound to appeal to lovers of police procedurals. She balances the current investigation with the various personal and professional issues faced by her recurring characters.
I have read all but one of the previous books in the series and found them all highly engaging. I look forward to reading the next book as well as catching up on the one I missed.
I've read several books in the series. They are OK. The stories are OK. The characters are OK. The dialogue is OK. Ok, sometimes the dialogue is sometimes ridiculous. If you want to read a procedural and you need every little thing explained in a conversation that I seriously hope most cops don't have to have with each other, then this is probably a good one to pick up. I found myself getting bored and skimming most conversations. Especially the personal and whiny ones.
I was really excited about this book -- both the summary and reviews about previous books in the series grabbed my attention. However, I tried so hard and just could not get into it. For some reason, the multiple perspectives slowed the pacing for me and overall, this one just didn't keep me hooked. After hearing such glowing things about the author's other books, though, I'm definitely interested in picking up one of those.
Having read the previous 5 Gina Harte book series I was eager to read the latest novel by the excellent Carla Kovach and I was not dissapointed. All what makes this an excellent police procedural series is present; intriguing and believable plot, fast paced and characters to care about. The story starts with a murder at a wedding but links to the families and past reoccurring characters as well as Gina's own personal life. I read this book in 3 days and having read lots of British police procedurals this series is one of my favourites.
Highly recommended and look forward to book 7!
This series never disappoints! A wedding reception is the opening scene for the first murder. I never predicted that murderer at any time in the story!
Wow! I can't wait for the next book!!!
It’s book 6 of the Gina Harte series, and the detective shows no signs of slowing down. She faces past traumas, deals with a problematic familial relationship, and investigates the crimes of a killer whose motivation seems very personal. The author creates dynamic scenes and realistic investigations. If you’ve read the previous books, you won’t be disappointed, as all of the trademarks are here. You can also read this one as a stand-alone. For a full review, please visit my blog at Fireflies and Free Kicks. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for a pre-release digital ARC of the book.
Her Last Mistake is book six in the highly readable DI Gina Harte series, but as with the previous books, the mysteries all stand alone and the characters’ situations haven’t changed much so you get all the backstory you need, and she doesn’t spoil previous books by revealing too much about former cases either. There are recurring themes of misogyny and violence towards women but the plots have been different enough to stop them getting stale.
Bridesmaid Holly Long is hiding a secret when she is murdered at her best friend’s wedding, but now the killer can’t wait to do it again. Gina has a range of possible suspects - and to her horror, one of them is getting close to her irritable daughter Hannah, just when they seemed to be getting on better.
Driven by her unending guilt about her own dark past, Gina will once more push herself to the brink to catch a murderer.
I’ve enjoyed all the books in this series but do get frustrated with Gina’s inability to move on from her issues, stand up to her whiny selfish daughter and accept that it would actually be OK to fall in love with the endlessly patient DCI Briggs. Six books, and she’s really no further forward. While I do love a driven detective, the way she insists on doing everything herself rather than trusting her team - who all seem pretty competent - makes her something of a liability. At least she’s stopped drinking!
The mystery aspect here was clever - I almost had it right but was once again shocked by the reveal, and was pleased by how it turned out for most of the characters. Once again, nearly all the men except who are not police are basically bastards, although there’s some pretty bad behaviour by the women too. Can’t someone in Gina’s world have a secure happy faithful relationship?
I guess that would be boring to read about...
Kovach writes well, and effectively balances the procedural aspects with character relationships and motivations, and this kept up a good pace. While murders are described it’s not excessively gruesome or sweary.
Whether you’re new to this series or have followed Gina’s adventures from the beginning, I can happily recommend it.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC which allowed me to give an honest review. Her Last Mistake is published on May 11th.
One of my very favorite series! Detective Gina Harte and her team are on a case that is so heartbreaking as it is tragic. It was an addictive read, so many twists and turns. Just when I believed I had the case solved, another curve was thrown. Those reads are my favorite kind, and after six books, Carla Kovach keeps me on my toes. It was dark, twisty, and enjoyable all at once. Weird, right?!? Loved the book and anxiously waiting for the next.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced copy of the book.

Great, thrilling mystery. This one kept me guessing almost to the end. This was number 6 in a series and I haven't read the previous ones. I would definitely read more based on this one.
Carla Kovach continues to outshine herself with every new installment of the Gina Harte series! Her Last Mistake is the sixth brilliant Gina Harte book I've read & I continue to be in awe of her & of course Gina too. I found this book to be descriptive enough to paint a vivid picture of events in the book - I really loved that in this book. Her Last Mistake is a highly twisted & compelling page-turner you won't want to keep down.
Holly Long, bridesmaid to her best friend Kerry is plagued by a secret she can't share with anyone. Choosing to be happy despite an obvious setback Holly smiles for her friend's wedding. On the day of the party, Holly is found dead in her bridesmaid gown by one of the other bridesmaids. Everyone at the wedding is shocked beyond comprehension as to who would want sweet & harmless Holly dead. Gina, who the case is assigned to wants more than anything to bring the killer to justice. Meeting with Holly's distraught mother, co-workers & friends Gina is convinced Holly's death might have something to do with the ruckus created at the wedding party a few moments earlier & orchestrated by none other than Samuel Avery. Following all leads diligently Gina uncovers some shocking truths about the people involved in the case. Just when she is frustrated about going around in circles, Kerry's other bridesmaid, Francesca is killed in her own home setting everyone to panic about a bridesmaid killer being on the loose. Who is killing Kerry's friends & why? Will Gina solve the case before the last remaining bridesmaid is killed?
As always, all characters in this book are brilliant. The plot too is very compelling - talk about a murder at a wedding!! I kept turning the pages way into the night. I'm also glad to see some kind of tangible action against Gina's old nemesis - Samuel Avery. Finally, I can see a very satisfying end for that sub-plot on the horizon! Overall, this was a great read and I cant wait to see what issue Gina tackles next!
Thank You, NetGalley, Bookouture & Carla Kovach for an arc!
I have read all of the books in this series and to be honest I found this one to be a little dull. The ongoing relationship with her daughter seems to have the same outcome at the end of each book 📚 where they arrange to meet up and then along comes a case and they fallout only to make up by the end of the book! I found the storyline to be rather dull and the ending was so far fetched and unbelievable. Not one of the authors best.
I am a huge fan of the DI Gina Harte series and I was really excited to get this one as an ARC from #NetGalley!
Overall, I enjoyed the book, but this was billed as an “Unputdownable Thriller” which I think is a b misnomer, since this one is definitely a slow burn police procedural.
The story was interesting and mostly held my attention, but was a little slow in parts and the ending was surprising but not especially satisfying.
