Little Whispers By KL Slater
I enjoyed this book, it's a slow burner and kept me interested and guessing right to the end. I liked the writing style and the storyline.
I like the lead character Janey, you know throughout the book that she has a secret she is keeping, and that unravels throughout the book. This book reads as a family drama type book with a mystery weaved into the story.
Overall an entertaining read.
Wow. I have read several of Kim’s books now and Little Whispers does not disappoint. The story is engaging right from the beginning, which, for me, is the most important selling point. After being sole care-giver to her dying mother for 18 months, Janey’s mom loses her battle, but not before sharing a devastating secret about Janey’s life that changes everything and leaves Janey with excrutiating guilt and shame. At this point, its a godsend when her husband Isaac proposes that he has gotten a job offer that will wipe away financial difficulties, give them a fresh start in a new place and afford him more time at home with Janey and their young son Rowan. It seems like a no-brainer but while Janey is still distraught by the death of her mother and the terrible secret she must keep, there may be more to her new, fresh life than meets the eye. I love how the author often uses parallel stories, jumping back and forth. The characters really draw you in. Once it really got going, I could not put this book down, I had to know what happened and how everything pieces together. I was guessing the whole time but when it cane down to it, I couldn’t have been further off, which I loved too— This author is very clever that way- just when you think you’ve figured it all out, you didn’t! I love the unpredictability in her books. I also love the emotions her stories provoke. This book had me cheering for Janey at some points and brought me to tears in the end. Another interesting, entertaining, fast-paced read! Thanks, Kim! I thoroughly recommend Little Whispers by K.L Slater.
The beginning chapters of this book didn't grab me, but I am so glad that I kept on reading to discover this unearthly, twisted read. I was on the edge of my seat towards the end as the whole plot unveiled and I was left feeling cheated.
Janet's mother is on her deathbed and she a devastating family secret before she dies. Now, Janey is carrying the burden of the secrets from the past. Janet's husband, Issac tells her that he's received a job offer that will pay him double the amount he gets just now. It also allows the family relocate to an exclusive community. Buckingham Crescent is a posh area. Jenny struggles in the beginning to fit in when she picks up her son, Rowan at the school gates. Issac becomes withdrawn, hes hiding a secret. As Janey and Rowan make new friends, Issac is working even longer hours than before. But then Janey confides her family secret to her new best friend. Janey witnesses a serious attack in the street. Ow she's facing blackmail threatsand her trust is betrayed.
This ook is a it of a slow burner for the first 70%. Theres secrets and lies throughout the story. The last 30% of the book was well worth waiting for. It's got twists and it gets intense. I was second guessing what was happening. K.L. Slater never disappoints. She always has you hooked by the end.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Bookouture and the author K.L. Slater for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

New house, new school, new friends...but should Janey trust new life she’s creating for herself?
Another quick read by KL Slater! I breezed through this book in a day! I’ve read a few by this author and they’ve all been highly bingeable reads! I enjoy her writing style!
The beginning of this one starts with Janey’s mom sharing a secret with Janey in her deathbed. We don’t know what the secret is but Janey struggles with it throughout the story. Janey meets 3 other moms at her son’s new school and they become fast friends! Of course the secret that Janey is carrying is revealed in a night filled with drinking and assurances that her secret would never be shared.
The only part of this story that bothered me were all of the signs that Janey didn’t pick up on surrounding her new friends. I spent a few moments thinking, “what is wrong with you.”
Ultimately, Janey’s secret is used to tear her new life apart. Her husband’s lucrative new job, that’s afforded them their new life, isn’t what it seems. This story had a few twists I didn’t accurately predict.
If you’ve enjoyed Slater’s other books, or stories like Big Little Lies, I think you’ll enjoy this one!
⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 3.5 stars for this one! Thank you @netgalley @bookouture and K L Slater for an advanced copy of the book for my honest review!
It’s an overcast gloomy day in N.C.! How’s the weather where you are?
Little Whispers by K.L. Slater is a story about Janey who moves with her husband and son to a highly desirable neighborhood in Buckingham Crescent. Her husband has just landed a new job doubling his salary and she feels enlightened to be included in the “in-crowd” for once in her life. Her recently deceased mother shared a shocking secret on her death bed that has left Janey in shock. It is no surprise once she feels comfortable with her new friends that she opens up, but can her confidant keep her secrets? And why is her husband all of a sudden being so secretive and who really are these friends with their lavish lifestyles? While I enjoyed this book, I was hoping the end would tie the lies and secrets together more cohesively.
I have had the pleasure of reading and loving several of K.L. Slater’s books now, so as soon as I heard about Little Whispers, I knew that I needed to get my hands on it immediately.
Following the death of her mother, Janey hasn’t been the same since her mother confessed the most shocking news on her deathbed. When Isaac is offered the opportunity of a lifetime in his IT career, they pack up and head to a new town with their son Rowan in tow.
A new house, a new school, and new neighbors sounds like the perfect distraction for Janey.
Janey is determined to fit into the group of local mothers and quickly finds friendship with Tanya. Tanya’s teenage daughter Angel quickly bonds with Rowan, so Janey feels like this new arrangement is a match made in heaven. One afternoon after a bit too much wine, Janey accidentally tells her secret to Tanya…and then everything starts to change.
I’ll be honest, the first 60% of this story was the slowest of slow burns for me. The first half of the story focuses on Janey and her relationship with the mothers in her new community. It essentially turns into the gossiping housewife trope, which I am not a fan of. I even considered DNFing at one point, but I powered through because I know that this author always proves me wrong in the end.
I am so glad that I powered through because the last 40% of the book is the EXACT heart pumping, thrilling suspense that I have come to associate with this author. Everything that I thought I knew about the story blew up in my face, and I loved it. The final twist was utterly jaw dropping.
Overall, this is a slow-burn domestic thriller that takes its time revealing itself, but the climax ending will leave you breathless.
Thank you to Bookouture for the blog tour invite as well as providing a review copy through NetGalley. This did not influence my review. All opinions are my own.
I have had Little Whispers by K.L. Slater on my ARC-TBR list for quite some time now but never got myself to start reading it. I don’t know why, but now I know I’ve made a mistake.
Janey hasn’t been living the exact perfect life. At the start of the book, we learn that her mother has told her a secret, with whom Janey is going to struggle until the very end. At this point, we don’t know what the secret was about, but trust me, when you find out, this entire wait will be worth it. The first few chapters are about the life she used to live. Her husband used to be working until late at night, and they grew more distant as the days passed by, until one day when Issac started a new job. He got a big raise, and they managed to move to a new town. A new neighbourhood, a new house, a new job, in other words, a new life, but is it going to be better than what they had before? As soon as she settles in, she meets some of the others ‘Buckingham mums’ (Tanya, Edie and Kyoto), with whom she is going to start being friends. Each of them is toxic (except one, not going to say who, because I don’t want to give you spoilers), but is she going to realise in time who are de good guys and who are the bad guys?
By the time I have reached 20% of the book, I got some major Big Little Lies vibes, and I quite liked that. Rich moms and dark secrets, what do you want more? I still wasn’t convinced about the action, and not quite hooked to the story, but despite all of this, I kept reading. Within a few hours, I reached 70%, and I was happier than ever! The book was easy to read, and the chapters were short. If it sometimes happened to be a longer chapter than expected, the next one was shorter than usual. The length of each one was well balanced, and I appreciate that in a book. Just like that, I reached the 88% mark, and the big secret got revealed. I made a shit-ton of scenarios in my head but never expected what happened next, but after all of this, I felt like the author started to babble. She just threw a bomb at us, but then she kept talking, somehow destroying the whole mood. I had to stop for a couple of times because I got worn down.
After some time, I reached the ending, and it was simply marvellous. I can’t think of a better one for this novel. I nicely put everything together, and, by the time you finish the book, you have your heart at ease. Exactly like it should be!
Overall, I was a great book whatsoever, and K.L. Slater just made my favourite list of authors. I am going to give it four stars out of five because I got bored while reading. A thriller book is not supposed to make you tired, it should keep you at the edge of your seat, and make you stay until 3 am just to finish it. Despite this, I highly recommend it for further reading!
Having read a couple of Slater's earlier novels which I loved I'm always intrigued to read her new ones but like the last one I read (The Apartment) this one just wasn't my cup of tea.
A domestic drama that I found repetitive, sluggish and slow to burn.
I’d like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Little Whispers’ written by K L Slater in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Janey’s husband Isaac has a new job and together with their young son Rowan they move to a detached house in Buckingham Crescent, an upmarket area that would normally be beyond their means. Whilst waiting at the school gate Janey makes the acquaintance of the wives of Buckingham Crescent, Edie, Tanya and Kyoto, and very soon becomes best friends with Tanya and her teenage daughter Angel. But Janey has a secret, told to her by her mother on her death-bed four months previously, and in a drunken moment she tells it to Tanya. She can trust her friend not to breathe a word to anyone else can’t she?
‘Little Whispers’ is a compelling thriller with a strong plot, drama and suspense. Throughout the book Janey keeps her mother’s confession a secret which isn’t revealed until the final chapters. As soon as I started I’ve not been able to stop reading as I’ve been intrigued to find out what the secret is. I did think the ending was a little bit rushed but nevertheless this is another great book by K L Slater which I’ve thoroughly enjoyed and can wholeheartedly recommend.
Kim Slater has once again written a psychological thriller masterpiece.Janey,Isaac and their son Rowan move to a bigger house in a lovely area when Isaac gets a new job and after years of struggling with money worries Janey thinks all that is behind them, she couldn't be happier especially when she is accepted into the inner circle of friends from the same street particularly Tanya,Edie and Ky.Even though Janey is carrying a dark secret from her past she really does start to believe that all is going to be ok,but when secrets and lies start to tumble out of the box she finds herself thinking who can she trust ?Little Whispers really is an excellent read which kept me guessing just how the story was going to end up to virtually the last few chapters.Kim Slater is at the top of her game when it comes to psychological thrillers and once again this book doesn't disappoint at all,a superb 5 star read.
Another great read by KL Slater. I just love her books. Again I must thank Bookouture for the pleasure in reading this book and the opportunity to review. Janey and her little family are about to embark on a new life, in a new house, with her husband starting a new job that will hopefully allow him to spend more time with her and their son. Janey meets the local mums , that appear to be rich, superficial and ina clique. While they welcome her to the group something is not quite right. Her husband is behaving secretive. When Janey herself exposes her deep held secret to one of the moms , will her new life come crashing down. I couldn't put this down , a page turner I totally recommend.
K L Slater is the the Queen of psychological thrillers!!!!! Her books get better and better. This story drew me in from the first page and I couldn't read it quickly enough to find out what happened. The ending blew me away, amazing storytelling and fantastic book.
This is a great domestic thriller that is full of secrets and lies.
I was nervous for Janey when her husband told her he’d got a new job and they were moving to a bigger house in an affluent part of the country, as it seemed too good to be true.
Janey is a bit wary and when she is shunned on the school run, she wonders if she’s made the right decision.
Alongside the move we learn Janey was told something recently when her mum died and it shook her to the core. We don’t find out what this is until later in the book and I can understand why this shocked her so much when she found out.
Janey is soon part of the exclusive group In the neighbourhood but who should she trust?
Her husband, Isaac seems to be working even longer hours and Janey wonders if the move was worth it.
Events come to a shocking climax and Janey wonders if she’ll get through it. On top of this her husband is missing and there’s someone she doesn’t expect at the door.
This book had me hooked from beginning to end and I loved it.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
I was given this book by NetGalley for an honest review - and - - what a book!!!!
Janey and her family are moving - her husband promises he will work less hours and they will have more family time - but that isn't happening - - why - - he seems more stressed -
And when Janey takes her child to school she finds rich, critical clicky women..... until she becomes friends with Tanya, who seems to be the leader of the pack.
Tanya's daughter Angel is seen with older men quarreling and then there is fight. Janey can't imagine what is going on and thinks she must tell Tanya what she saw...and when she finds out there was a murder she feels she must report it to the cops. Does she dare speak up? Will she loose her friendship with Tanya? What is going on with her husband and this town?
Another gripping psychological thriller! Having read and loved all of KL Slaters books, I was excited to get stuck into her latest book Little Whispers and was not disappointed.
The story pulls you in from the begining, the plot was fast paced and extremely suspenseful. Some of the characters are unlikeable but this story keeps you hooked until the end. It's a book full of engrossing secrets, surprising twists and an unpredictable ending, a must-read for domestic psychological thriller fans.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC !!
Janey has just lost her mother a few months ago and is still trying to recover from the loss, as well as the shocking secrets her mom told her on her deathbed. Issac lands with a new high paying job that allows them to shift to Buckingham Crescent, the smartest address in a desirable suburban town.
Janey is worried she’ll will not fit in with the women in the neighborhood but when Tanya takes Janey under her wing, she is overjoyed and feels that life is just right and her past is behind her. But in a weak moment over a bottle of wine, Janey finds herself telling Tanya her most shocking secret.
What follows are a series of events that threatens to destroy the family that Janey has worked so hard to protect…
This book is so awesomazing !! I just loved it, once I started reading it I just couldn't put it down and the end was so unexpected. Highly recommended.
Little Whispers started out slow for me. There was a longer buildup to the action than I prefer. Once it got started though, it flew for me. The last half I sped through trying to find out what happened.
I find the characters truly well chosen; so relatable and real. Janey, the main character, has just lost her mother a few months ago and is still trying to recover from the loss, as well as the shocking secrets her mom told her during her last days. Her husband; Isaac, who just got a new job which, as he says, will be the beginning of a new bright life, he seems off somehow though…
Tanya is your typical rich-beautiful-fashionable mom and Janey’s neighbor, they become later on friends, along with Edie and Kyoko and other moms from the same neighborhood. The thing that I quite liked is that each character was different from the other, each one has a set of problems/struggles to deal with and it made reading the book more enjoyable!
I believe that the writing style is the thing that made the reading experience pretty cool and breathtaking. During the first chapters, it was normal paced, it reminded me of bad moms, I think the action set off about 100 pages or so in, I didn’t find it boring but it wasn’t as much as after the 100 pages….Nevertheless, once action started, the intrigue hits full force and it becomes harder to put the book down.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for an advanced e-arc of this book. This is my second book from K.L. Slater and might be might last. I almost didn't finish this book after reading fifty percent but after reading some reviews, I thought the end would be worth it. It wasn't. I was really let down when the story finally came together and the secrets were revealed. I just didn't find this book to be that entertaining. I loved all the parts with the rich moms and how they interacted with each other but the thriller aspect of this book missed the mark for me.
