Be careful who you share your secrets with
Moving to a new area to start over may seem like a good idea, but can you really get away from your secrets?
I have read alot of k.l. Slater books and loved them all
This is the first I struggled with getting through. I'm not sure why I had trouble with it but to say I felt it was a.bit slow at times. It was hard to keep my interest.
I will of course keep reading Slater books however as she is a brilliant writer.
3.5 stars. This book was good but not great. The description pulls you in but once you start reading it, it’s just a very slow burn. There are hints as to what the secret is throughout the book but you don’t find out what it really is until you’re about 3/4 through it. There was a big twist in the end that had to deal with Janey’s secret that I did not see coming so that bumped it from a 3 to a 3.5 rating for me. The author did a good job with the writing especially with being able to get a feel for each character. I just felt like most of the story dragged on too long to get to the secret and the exciting stuff. It had nice short chapters which I love...and was a quick easy read.

This book had a slow build, but once it started to pick up, it had a snowball effect. WOW! I was sure that I had this book and the plot figured out. In my mind, this was going to be another simple plot, but BOY was I a far cry from being right. This book starts slow and keeps readers in suspense of this great secret. It will be difficult to put this book down once you get about 1/3 of the way through. Little Whispers did not disappoint. I can already tell that this is a book that I would revisit in the future, which is rare for me.
Leave it to KL to hit it out of the park with this one. Even though it started off a little slow in the beginning for me, the psychological aspect of the book made it so much more. I stayed up all night reading this book and it was worth it.
Thank you Netgalley, the author and publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read and review this in exchange for an honest review.
This was a 3.5 rounded up to a 4 star review as there were some parts that were a little slow and others that were great and very well written.
Janey Markham and her family are relocating to Buckingham Crescent, a substantial move up on the world and in social circles. Son Rowan starts attending school and Janey finds herself welcomed into an elite circle of yummy mummies. At the same time husband Isaac appears distracted, working long hours and warns Janey to be careful with her new found friends and not share any information about her life or his work.
Janey has a secret, on her deathbed Janey’s mum told her an awful truth about her which Janey is finding it difficult to deal with. With Isaac distant she chooses to share with her friends. This leads to a dramatic ending for all.
I enjoyed the ending and had no idea what was going to happen and the twist was good.
Wow, just when I thought I was getting tired of psychological thrillers! I really enjoyed reading this book and couldn’t put it down. Well thought out characters and original plotline. My only complaint is that I didn’t like being the only one to not know the secret of Janey’s past after her friends and town found out - a reveal a little earlier might have been nice. Will definitely look for this author again!
K L Slater took me on a 4 hour journey of suspense, shock and fast-paced reading because I couldn't put it down!
Little Whispers is my second read by Slater and I am now a fan. It's a fast paced psychological thriller with twists that I couldn't predict. There were some chapters that were part of a backstory and the whole time I was trying to figure out how the two storylines connected, I just couldn't. When I discovered the link, I was impressed at how Slater had kept me guessing up until that point. If you enjoy a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat and wanting to connect the dots, you'll like this one.
I definitely preferred this one to The Apartment as I felt the characters were better written and more realistic and I'm now excited to read more of Slater's work!
Have you ever shared a secret with the wrong person?
Janey Markham is thrilled to be moving with her family to a desirable suburban town.
Worried she’ll be excluded by the glossy local mothers, Janey is thrilled when she meets Tanya, the kind of woman she has always looked up to.
But then everything changes…
In a weak moment over a bottle of wine, Janey finds herself telling Tanya her most shocking secret. Why wouldn’t she trust her new friend?
I was intrigued by the premise of Little Whispers and was excited to finally start reading it. I’m gonna lie. I stopped way too many times and started other books.
This book felt very slow in the beginning to me that I just needed a break from it. It was a slow build for something that to me wasn’t that shocking.
It did pick up about halfway through and i did like most of the book.
I have heard good things about this author so I will definitely read one of her other books and see how I like that!
I really was entertained by Little Whispers. It was a bit of a slow start, but the author wrote in such a way as to keep me interested rather than annoyed at the holdout of what was in Janey’s mystery box.
Janey and her husband moved to their new ritzy neighborhood, Isaac’s job demands are worse than ever, Janey must break into a clique of friends, and a secret told to Janey by her dying mom must be dealt with. I’m not sure if Janey is naïve or simply too tolerant; she could rationalize the happenings of almost every situation.
I was in the dark as to what was going on and wanted to know more; great writing Ms. Slater.
There was, however, a huge – and distracting – discrepancy in the ages of Janey and Pat. Pat had Janey young, but are we to believe Pat was younger than twelve when Janey was born. “Pat hid the pregnancy well, stayed away from home for most of it.” How could she if she was younger than twelve? Janey was 8 when “… it started happening”, (later in the story Janey was 14) and then eight murders took place before Pat was killed in a car accident at age 20. This timeline was unquestionably muddled. Where oh where was your editor.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review Little Whispers. I’m giving it five stars in spite of the age discrepancy. I enjoyed it.
Gosh, I can’t begin to tell you how much I loved this book!
This novel has a great storyline. It feels a bit like one of those American television shows with the neighbourhood and the women always being immaculately turned out. Either that or one of those reality shows.
Things for Janey couldn’t be going much better when they move into their new home in a much better area. Her husband’s job is better paid, so they don’t have the constant money worries as well as her getting friendly with the in crowd of mums. I couldn’t help getting a bad feeling though and screaming at her in my head to be careful.
The twists and turns this story takes sent me dizzy towards the end. I had absolutely no clue at just how this story would play out but I definitely didn’t expect anything like how it did. There is the odd chapter that is set in the past of which kept me on my toes as I tried desperately to see how that was going to fit in with what was going on in Janey’s life.
Little Whispers is a wonderfully dark and devious tale that grabbed me from the very first page. Janey’s new life and her new friendships had me fully absorbed and I enjoyed getting to know these characters better. If you love a story where things arn’t quite what they seem and discovering shocking secrets, you are going to love this book.
Yet another book from this great author. Wasn't sure at all what was going on in the book so read it fast to get to the ending. Brilliant as all her books are. Highly recommend
3.5 Stars.
After being disappointed with "The Apartment", this book is definitely a step up! The main character is Janey, she's married to Isaac who just received a "too good to be true" job offer and they're packing up their meager life, with their son, and moving into an elite neighborhood.
There are so many parallels that I was drawing to "The Apartment", the main character is always an insecure mother and a great opportunity arises, only to realize that there were major strings attached.
The big secret that Janey's mom reveals before she dies appears to be the main driver of the story-line, as it's the beginning of the book and is alluded to throughout, but is then hastily wrapped up. When you find out, it doesn't quite tie to the other story-line of Isaac's new job and the elite group of lady friends that Janey gets involved with. I felt like these two story lines were just mashed together.
Otherwise, this was an entertaining read. I simply love the rich lady upcrust drama.
A special thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture, and KL Slater for providing me with an ARC.
Janey Markham leaves her work as a Teaching Assistant behind her to care for her mother who is nearing the end of her life. On her death bed her mother tells Janey a terrible secret that has burdened her since Janey was tiny. She also gives her a secret storage box to look through when she feels strong enough to find out more. When she dies Janey is distraught and cannot tell even her husband any details about her mother’s disclosure. This captured my interest and intrigued me straight away, so I continued reading with great enthusiasm.
From then on I keep my focus solely on Janey as her story moves forward. At last some good news comes for the family. Her husband Isaac is really joyful when he breaks the fantastic news that he has landed his dream job and with a generous moving package. His current salary is to be doubled and he can also work from home sometimes as well, which will give them more family time together. He cannot believe his good fortune as his new boss tells him that near the Abacus headquarters there is a house for sale in Buckingham Crescent. They go to view it and immediately know it is ideal for a fresh new start for them all in a new-to-them house and town. Without any hold-ups the purchase of the house goes through and so they move in and meet the neighbours.
Janey is quick to make new friends amongst the ‘Buckingham Mums Clique’ and soon their son Rowan is settled in with friends of his own. Everything is looking rosy for the family and Janey is busy unpacking. But Isaac is working even longer hours than before. He tells her he is not worried as he realises it will be only a minor setback until he is established with new customers of his own. It will be worth waiting for and he is confident it will settle down. Janey even manages to get a job at Rowan’s school looking after a boy with special needs. That’s the icing on the cake.
Life is ticking along nicely until Janey confides her terrible secret to her new best friend. Soon afterwards she witnesses a serious attack in the street and comes forward as a witness after watching the police appeal. These two facts combine to create a maelstrom of chaos in Janey’s life, as she faces blackmail threats when her trust is betrayed and her family has to face the music. Lies are unearthed and finally the truth becomes evident.
I enjoyed reading this psychological thriller and read on eagerly and quickly. The story is action-packed and addictive. At no time as I read on could I foresee what the ending would be. The story is full of surprises, shocks, red herrings and false information. I loved the constant dripping out of facts which made the story an intriguing and thrilling crime mystery. I thought the story was well written and that the plot was very cunningly developed to feed the reader’s interest and curiosity. I liked the diversity of characters and the way the author developed them within the story to move it forward. My favourite character was Janey because I thought she stayed honest and true to herself. She was a good person and acted accordingly. When the story reached its ending I was pleasantly surprised and in awe at the devious but also ingenious plotting.
Thanks to publisher Bookouture who sent me this book to read, and also to NetGalley, who arranged for readers to review the novel. Thank you also to Kim Slater, who envisaged this intriguing and well written story. It’s a 4.5* review from me and the recommendation that this is a good, exciting read.
Another fine read by K.L. Slater. I should have seen this one coming but again I did not! Without giving anything away I’ll say it was a great mystery. When new Resident/Mom/Wife Janey is finally accepted into to one of the most prestigious streets and by the “Buckingham Cres” group the author nails the behavior of a still very high school/mean girls clique of Mom’s who are old enough to know better but don’t.
Janey is a sheep and craves acceptance so badly. We learn why later but still I was embarrassed for her. And when she blindly accepts all the mean girl and odd behaviour happening around her well, she might have wanted to listen to the one person she wrote off as crazy when she was warned. Her marriage is going off the rails, her very self image is called into question and when she finally refuses to tow the line let’s just say things get a whole lot worse.
Again special thanks to NetGalley and bookoutre for another fine ARC!
I love this author’s books and she never fails to give us a storyline which grabs you from the first page and doesn’t let you go until the very last! This story focusses on Janey Markham and her family. Janey lives a pretty normal life – her young son loves football, her and her husband Isaac have debts and they are always dreaming of a better life! When Isaac gets a new job, it seems like their dreams may have come true. They are able to pay off these debts and move to a much better area, in a much bigger house. For Janey though, she continues to carry around a family secret which her mother reveals to her just before she dies. In their new life, Janey deals with it as she has done since she first found out – she keeps it all locked away in a box. With new neighbours and a new school for her son, the Markham family find themselves integrated into a very close-knit community, but are Janey’s new friends everything they appear to be?
I liked Janey’s character, but as the story moved on, I did wonder why she put up with as much from her husband that she did! I also thought she came across as a little bit gullible, believing everything that everyone told her with no questions asked – but then again, perhaps you can’t really blame her when these were the people she should have been able to trust. She was a very relatable character though, and I could easily see myself in some of her! I know I’ve stood around in a playground wishing someone would come and talk to me, but as you carry on reading the book it does make you realise that perhaps it’s not such a bad thing to keep yourself to yourself!!
Janey and Isaac’s relationship had obviously been on the rocks for a while and I have to admit I was cringing slightly when she’s pouring her heart out to her new neighbours and friends, despite her husband asking her not to. The other characters in the book, namely her new friends and neighbours weren’t particularly likeable but strangely addictive as you try and work out if they are genuine or not! The author did a great job of keeping the suspense going and keeping me on my toes!! The story gripped me from very early on and it moved at quite a fast pace. The main storyline perhaps stopped me from thinking too much about what family secret Janey was hiding, but there was always something niggling away in the background as to what it was all about! Even as the book moved on, I didn’t guess what the secret was until it was revealed!
All in all, this was a fabulous thriller of a read, with red herrings and dead ends galore. It really made you think about who you can trust, first impressions of people and are some secrets really best left hidden? I loved the suspense of what was going on and it kept me on the edge of my seat until the reveal, which neatly tied up all the loose endings! Really enjoyable, highly recommended!!
I am such a fan of this author! I try to pick up just about every novel I can find from Slater. This one was a great twisty thriller which just reminded me once again how wonderful a writer she is. This one will keep you guessing right until the very end!
Janey and her husband, Isaac and their son, Rowan, move to a new house in an upmarket area, Buckinghamshire Crescent, after Isaac starts a new job with definitely more pay check. A new house, a new neighbourhood, a new school, which is pretty intriguing for Janey who's trying hard to fit in and find whom she should trust.
Isaac's new job makes him working long hours and Janey feels that Isaac is a bit judgemental about her being close with the housewives in the neighbourhood.
The suspense builds in a slow pace and I feel the plot is over-complicated. It intrigues me to know the ending, however the plot prior to the ending is pretty flat.
I still enjoy reading the book, but something is missing.
This was a great domestic mystery/drama. I've heard great things about this author, and I can now confirm that I'm a fan.
It was a thrilling story that kept me guessing.
The only thing I didn't enjoy was that the ending seemed rushed. It was a slow burn all the way though, and then suddenly it was over. I would have liked if it was a bit more balanced. Other than that, it's a great book!
Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a copy of the ebook to read via Netgalley.
This was the first book i picked up by this author and it sure won't be the last ( as i just snagged another of her books) . This story is about a little family who is of a lower income and all of a suddent their lives are thrown into the upper class world and the lifestyle that it brings. I honestly did not expect anything that i got from this book but it was lovely. it is very british so know that going in and it is so lovely to read. I will say i wish the HUGE TA DA was done a bit better as i feel it could have been done more and i would have liked MORE of Janeys secret given throughout the book it was actually really well written. i will probably read all this authros books!
I have read many books by KL Slater and liked the vast majority of them- this one does not disappoint. It centers on Janey, whose husband Isaac gets a fancy new job and moves the family to a upscale suburb. Janey falls in with the cool crowd and becomes specifically enamored by Tanya, whose son hits it off with Janey's son. The book starts with a deathbed confession from Janey's mother, a secret that the reader doesn't find out until near the end of the book.
In the first half of the book, nothing really happens, but things are going so well for Janey that you know the other shoe is going to drop at some point, so there is a degree of tension there. I do wish she had gotten to the action just a little bit sooner, though. I struggled with Janey a little bit- while she strove to do the right thing even when it was a hard thing, I was sometimes frustrated by her extreme insecurity when interacting with her new friends, as well as when she was more worried that Isaac might be cheating on her than if his entire job was a scam.
Once the action picked up, it really picked up and the rest of the story was fast paced with some surprises. Even though the reader knows something is going on with Isaac, the depth of the reveal is surprising. I also spent the entire book trying to figure out what Janey's mother's secret was, and it was a big one!
Despite the slow start, I'd recommend this book for those who like domestic/psychological thrillers and mysteries. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
